Former Ohio State guard Scotty Middleton chooses transfer destination

One former Buckeye hoops star has found his new home. #GoBucks

Former Ohio State guard Scotty Middleton is ready to submit his change of address form with the post office.

Middleton played quite a bit for the Buckeyes last season as a freshman and showed flashes of what made him a highly regarded prospect when former OSU coach Chris Holtmann landed him in the 2022 class. As with every year, the transfer portal became tempting for the young freshman and he jumped into it after a 2023-2024 season that did not go as well as many would have wanted in Columbus.

Now, after looking at his options, Middleton has decided to transfer to Seton Hall to begin anew according to an announcement he made on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday.

We wish Middleton nothing but the best with the three years he has remaining and will look to follow how things go in South Orange, New Jersey, beginning this upcoming season.

Ohio State basketball loses freshman contributor to the transfer portal

A significant loss for the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

If you had been paying attention to Ohio State basketball over its last few games, you would have known that freshman wing [autotag]Scotty Middleton[/autotag] had been away from the team during the NIT run.

Although the exact reason why the Florida native returned home wasn’t announced, and the fact that he returned for the final game seemed like everything was fine. It turns out, it wasn’t.

Middleton entered the transfer portal on Monday, after his first year which saw him score 4.4 points-per-game. He started to play with much more confidence and results once Jake Diebler took over, but a second season isn’t in the cards for the two.

An interesting aspect of Middleton’s announcement was that he intended on testing the NBA draft process, something that probably isn’t a realistic possibility at the moment.

We wish Middleton the best as he looks for his next basketball home. He is the second Buckeye to enter the portal following Bowen Hardman’s decision last week.

Scotty Middleton to make return against Nebraska Tuesday

Can Ohio State finally win a game on the road? #GoBucks

According to Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann, freshman guard Scotty Middleton will make a return on Tuesday when the Buckeyes travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska.

Middleton missed the game against Penn State at home for violating team rules. What brought about that suspension has not been revealed, and don’t expect it to officially be. However, getting Middleton back will add some depth to the backcourt and that’s always a good thing on the road in the Big Ten.

So far this season, Middleton is averaging 4.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in almost 17 minutes of play. But again, getting some depth and ball-handling will do nothing but help Ohio State end a 12-game road losing streak dating back to last season that’s hanging around the program’s neck.

Hopefully, the Buckeyes can do enough to come out of Lincoln with a victory. We’ll have coverage and analysis before and after the game, so be sure to check back with us here at Buckeyes Wire.

Watch: Ohio State signee hits game winning shot against No. 1 team

What a moment for Scotty #GoBucks

Although [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] signee Scotty Middleton’s [autotag]Sunrise Christian Academy[/autotag] was viewed as heavy underdogs against top ranked [autotag]Monteverde Academy[/autotag], it didn’t seem like it as the game went on.

Sunrise rose to the challenge and knocked off Montverde to advance to the semifinal round of the [autotag]Geico Nationals Tournament[/autotag]. It wasn’t without drama, especially for Middleton.

With his team down two points with a little over 30 seconds remaining, they stole the ball and on a fast break, Middleton spotted up for three. His teammate found him open and the future Buckeye sank the game winning three pointer with about 24 seconds left in the game.

It was an epic moment for Middleton, beating the number one team in the country and getting one step closer to playing for a championship. Check out his game winning show below along with an interview breaking down his shot.

Ohio State basketball signee has opportunity for Geico Nationals title

Good luck Scotty! #GoBucks

Typically, high school basketball teams’ seasons end when their run through the state tournament is done, but that isn’t the case for Ohio State signee Scotty Middleton.

The 6-foot, 6-inch, and 180-pound small forward will lead his Sunrise Christian Academy team against Montverde Academy, the top overall seed in the Geico Nationals Tournament.

Sunrise, which is located in Kansas, plays a national schedule, one that has it traveling to multiple different states this season like Maryland, Colorado, Utah, and Texas.

Middleton helped his team 20-7 record and a top ranking in the state. He and his team will look to extend their season this afternoon as tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET Thursday and will be broadcasted on ESPNU.

WATCH: Ohio State Basketball signee Devin Royal goes off, scores 40 points

The Buckeyes could use him now! #GoBucks

When instate basketball star [autotag]Devin Royal[/autotag] committed to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], it was a massive recruiting win for head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag]. Not only did the Buckeyes get a commitment from a top-50 player, but they also kept Royal away from other [autotag]Big Ten[/autotag] schools like Michigan, Penn State, [autotag]Illinois[/autotag], and Wisconsin.

Although Royal isn’t the top signee of the class, Kansas small forward Scotty Middleton is, he’s part of a four-man class that ranks as one of the best in the country. As Royal finishes out his high school career at [autotag]Pickerington Central[/autotag], he continues to show why he’s the best in the state.

On Friday night, Royal was absolutely dominant, scoring 40 points and leading the Tigers to a 73-58 win over [autotag]Reynoldsburg[/autotag]. Check out the highlights below of Royal’s massive game.

Ohio State basketball 2023 recruiting commitment tracker

Keeping track of the Ohio State basketball class of 2023, updated if there are any changes. #GoBucks

Sure, Ohio State is known as a football school, but the Buckeyes do play a little hoops on the banks of the Olentangy and have had some pretty historic seasons over the years.

Former head coach Thad Matta ushered in the pinnacle of the OSU basketball period before things began to slip, and now Chris Holtmann is trying to get things back at that same level. To do so, the Ohio State staff will have to recruit at a higher level than what we saw over the last few years. And while Holtmann and company have had their fair share of recruiting wins, including a top ten class for 2022, it has to be sustainable.

Welcome then to the 2023 class that has the potential to be one of the best classes the Buckeye program has hauled in in a very, very long time.

To keep track of it all, we’re giving you our Ohio State basketball 2023 recruiting commitment tracker so that you can be in step with what the next batch of OSU cagers look like. As it stands right now, it’s a phenomenal class. We’ll update it if there are any changes, but for now, here are all four members of the 2023 class that have given their verbal commitment.

Scotty Middleton the latest commit to top-five Ohio State 2023 recruiting class

Asked why he chose Ohio State, Middleton credited the school’s culture and coach Chris Holtmann.

Five-star small forward Scotty Middleton committed to Ohio State on Sunday, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Middleton had 15 offers from other schools and had also visited with UConn and Seton Hall before settling on the Buckeyes. This move further strengthens a frontcourt that also scored commitments from four-star forwards Devin Royal and Dailyn Swain a few days ago. 247Sports now has Ohio State’s 2023 recruiting class ranked in the top-five nationally.

Asked why he chose Ohio State, Middleton credited the school’s culture and coach Chris Holtmann, according to ESPN.

“The coaching staff, the fans and the culture that Ohio State has. How the players and coaches carry themselves. Being at Ohio State is going to make me a better basketball player, but more importantly, a better person… Coach Holtmann was honest throughout this whole process and he never told me what I wanted to hear or held back on anything.”

Middleton (6-foot-6, 180 pounds) has bounced around quite a bit in the last few years. He played his Freshman season in Miami, followed by one in New Jersey and another in Kansas at Sunrise Christian Academy.

Middleton is a capable scorer, but he also feels he can rely on his defense even when his shots aren’t falling. He credits his coaches for instilling that instinct in him:

“The coaches really emphasized it and I think I really bought in and wanted to guard the best players on the team… You’ve got to take it serious. I feel like defense is really everything in my game. It gets me going. When I’m playing bad some games and I can’t hit a shot or nothing’s falling, I rely on my defense.”

Here is a look at Middleton’s highlight reel.

Heading into the 2022 season, Middleton is ranked No. 33 among all players in the nation and No. 7 among forwards by 247Sports.

BOOM! Ohio State basketball lands 5-star small forward, Scotty Middleton

Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball program is on fire with recruiting as of late. #GoBucks

It’s been a pretty good weekend on the recruiting front for a couple of Ohio State programs. On Saturday, the football team received a big boost with the commitment of 4-star linebacker Arvell Reese, and that was followed on Sunday with the basketball program also getting into the act.

And it’s a big one.

Most recruiting services have Scotty Middleton as a high 4-star prospect in the 2023 class, but the ESPN 100 has him as a 5-star talent. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Middleton is the No. 24 overall prospect and sixth best small forward in the 2023 class. That means the Buckeyes have just landed their highest-rated basketball recruit in the Chris Holtmann era, and top in the last nine years.

Middleton loved the family atmosphere of Ohio State — a selling feature another recent commit, Devin Royal — also extolled, and it was enough to vault OSU over his other final two schools, UConn and Seton Hall.

With the commitment, Ohio State now has four in the 2023 cycle, a class that is quickly shaping up to be one of the elite in the nation. Yes, Chris Holtmann is starting to set the program up with some good, sustainable momentum as long as key pieces stick together.

Ohio State basketball 5-star target to announce college choice Sunday

Ohio State is hoping for some big news Saturday with a priority hoops target. #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball team is fresh off a major commitment from four-star small forward Devin Royal this past week, but now it’s time to turn our attention to another potential BOOM!

High four-star small forward Scotty Middleton, out of Wichita, Kansas, will let the college basketball world know on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, where he plans to perform athletic feats in college. And, yes, the Buckeyes are expected to be in the thick of the announcement.

According to the 247Sports composite, Middleton is No. 34 among national prospects and sixth among small forwards.

Middleton is a five-star prospect according to the ESPN Top 100.

According to the tweet shared by Middleton, you can follow along with his announcement by pulling up the Twitter account of former OSU assistant and current recruiting guru, Paul Biancardi. Currently, the crystal balls point toward a big day for the Buckeyes, but UConn and Seton Hall are in the mix.

The Ohio State recruiting class of 2023 is already in the top five with three commitments. Getting another highly sought prospect would significantly boost the class.
