College football season is on the horizon and the Badgers’ opener is now 70 days away as Wisconsin faces Buffalo on Sept. 2 at Camp Randall. In 2010, the Badgers set multiple scoring records, starting with their 70-3 win over Austin Peay on Sept. 25.

In the contest, quarterback Scott Tolzien threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns, but the running game is what made the difference for the Badgers. Starter John Clay turned 15 carries into 118 yards and a score while backup James White truly burst onto the scene. The true freshman recorded 145 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries.

Montee Ball added another 64 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries while Wisconsin set the program record with 70 points. That record wouldn’t stand long though, as the team went on to beat Indiana 83-20 in November.

Wisconsin finished the 2010 campaign 11-1 before going on to lose the 2011 Rose Bowl to TCU by a score of 21-19.

Leading Wisconsin to an 11-2 overall record, Tolzien completed 194 passes for 2,459 yards and 16 touchdowns while starting all 13 games. The 2010 season was the start of a three-year stretch where the Badgers made the Rose Bowl each season, losing all three.

On January 1, 2011, Tolzien and the Badgers fell to Andy Dalton and his TCU Horned Frogs 21-19 in the Rose Bowl. The game concluded Tolzien’s third and final season (second as starter) with Wisconsin.

He finished his career in Madison with 5,271 passing yards (seventh all-time) and 32 passing touchdowns (10th all-time). His 72.9 percent completion percentage remains the highest total for a single season in program history, just barely edging out Russell Wilson’s 72.8 percent from 2011.

Tolzien went on to go unselected in the 2011 NFL Draft and he started two games for the Green Bay Packers in 2013 and two others for the Indianapolis Colts (one in 2016 and another in 2017) before retiring.

Report: Cowboys to announce longtime McCarthy aides as QB coach, LB coach

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has turned to two of his own to fill what would appear to be the final openings on the team’s coaching staff for 2023.

And they both already have a parking pass at The Star.

Scott Tolzien is expected to be officially named as the new quarterbacks coach in Dallas, as per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Tolzien has served as a coaching assistant for the team since 2020; he was brought aboard early in McCarthy’s tenure mainly to work with the team’s passers. Tolzien played under McCarthy in Green Bay for three seasons, getting into six games as Aaron Rodgers’s backup.

The 35-year-old Wisconsin product will take over the role after Doug Nussmeier’s move to the Chargers, where he’ll reunite with Kellen Moore.

Scott McCurley will also get a promotion, according to reports, and is set to become the Cowboys’ primary linebackers coach.

It will actually be McCurley’s second stint in the position. Originally hired by McCarthy in 2020 to be linebackers coach, McCurley was more or less demoted after one season. That’s when senior defensive assistant George Edwards took over the linebackers upon the arrival of Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator.

McCurley is a Pennsylvania native and Pitt alum who first served under McCarthy as a Packers coaching intern in 2006. He spent five years as a defensive quality control assistant before McCarthy promoted him to assistant linebackers coach. He had worked his way up to defensive assistant by 2018 and spent 2019 out of football before McCarthy brought him to Dallas.

His tenure at Wisconsin may have been brief, but in that time, Wilson proved he was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the Wisconsin uniform.

He was promoted to the active roster after Aaron Rodgers’ collarbone injury and eventually played in three games with two starts, completing 55 of 90 passes for 717 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions. He also ran for a touchdown.
