A loss to Nebraska in week 3 is not acceptable for the Oklahoma Sooners

There’s no excuse for the Oklahoma Sooners to exit Lincoln, Nebraksa with anything other than a win

There was a time before the football season when I looked at the Week 3 game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln and shuddered with concern. Memorial Stadium in Lincoln is one of the most unfriendly environments for opposing teams, despite the hard times the Huskers have faced.

Venables said about the matchup: “It’s gonna be really exciting, and a great, great challenge for us to go to Lincoln go on the road, you know, tough environment. I’m really excited to see what our team is all about. You know, it’d be a great opportunity for us to continue to grow and develop, you know, as a team.”

It’s a tough place to play. That, however, is no excuse.

The Oklahoma Sooners should go into Lincoln and win.

Former Nebraska head coach Scott Frost was fired before his buyout of more than $15 million would be cut in half on Oct. 1. The university clearly wanted him out and wanted him out as soon as possible. Losing to the Sun Belt Conference’s Georgia Southern was the final straw.

That game against Georgia Southern was at home, by the way.

Anything less than absolute domination isn’t acceptable from the Sooners in Week 3. The Nebraska defense ranks at the very bottom of the Big Ten in points allowed per game (31). That’s after games against Northwestern, North Dakota and Georgia Southern. The Sooners are winning by an average margin of 31 points per game through their first two wins.

The Huskers also rank last in the Big Ten in rushing yards allowed per game. So, I’m sure the run-loving Jeff Lebby is already dialing up plays for Eric Gray and Marcus Major. They are second to last in the Big Ten in passing defense, just in case you were wondering. The only team below them in that category is Northwestern.

Nebraska has named another former Nebraska quarterback, Mickey Joseph, as Frost’s interim replacement.

Joseph was on Ed Orgeron’s staff at LSU when the Tigers won the 2019 national championship. He was the passing game coordinator and assistant head coach. He had been serving as the wide receivers coach in Lincoln before taking over as interim head coach.

His last head coaching gig was at Langston University from 2011-2012, where he had a record of 13-7.

The Sooners have to drop the hammer as quickly as possible. Taking a half to get in the zone against Kent State is one thing, but playing down to the Huskers when they’re doing their best Titanic impression just isn’t going to work.

Go into Lincoln and show Big Red the Sooners are on a different level. There’s no reason the Sooners shouldn’t be 3-0 heading into Big 12 play.

Oklahoma Sooners move up one spot to 6th in AP Poll

After Oklahoma’s win over Kent State, the Sooners climb one spot to No. 6 in the AP Top 25 Poll.

When Oklahoma kicked off their game against Kent State, there had to be some level of anxiousness considering two other schools in the top 10 had already lost to unranked Group of Five teams. And at home. Oklahoma experienced a shaky start on a day when shaky starts turned into historic upsets for top 10 teams.

The Sooners started as if it was at the forefront of their brain and only led 7-3 heading into halftime.

In the second half, they put their foot on the gas and zoomed right past the Golden Flashes to win 33-3.

Oklahoma avoided a fate suffered by Notre Dame and Texas A&M. Both suffered huge drops in the AP Poll released Sunday afternoon.

Similarly to the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, Brent Venables’ Sooners rose one spot from seventh to sixth.

Ahead of them sit the Georgia Bulldogs at number one, the Alabama Crimson Tide at number two, Ohio State, Michigan, and Venables’ old team, the Clemson Tigers round out the top five.

Behind the Sooners to round out the top 10 are Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans at No. 7, in-state rival Oklahoma State, Mark Stoops’ Kentucky Wildcats, and at number ten, the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Oklahoma is in an excellent position in the rankings as they wrap up their non-conference schedule with a trip to long-time foe Nebraska. This game has all the makings of a contest that won’t be easy, considering Nebraska just fired head coach Scott Frost. Frost underperformed his entire tenure with the Cornhuskers. These moves have a way of galvanizing a team. Expect Nebraska’s best effort next Saturday.

The Baylor Bears lost on the road to BYU Saturday night and dropped from ninth to seventeenth. At the same time, Texas stayed firm at No. 21 after missing a chance to knock off the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Nebraska’s AD announces national search for next head football coach

The Husker AD said he plans to reach out to “a lot of people” about the job.

Nebraska Director of Athletics Trev Alberts met with the media on Sunday afternoon to discuss his decision to relieve Scott Frost as the head football coach of the Cornhuskers earlier that day. Alberts spoke for about fifteen minutes with the assembled press, and the most telling quote of the entire availability was the announcement that Nebraska would be conducting a national search for the next head coach. However, Alberts would also not set himself to a timeline for the hire stressing the need for a detail-oriented process.

While this will be the first time Alberts will hire a football coach, a common theme emerges from how he has handled coaching searches for other sports at Nebraska or his previous stop at Nebraska-Omaha. As Gary Sharp of “1620 The Zone” tweeted, expect the search to be seen as a “very thorough search and a quiet process.” Alberts also stressed a need for someone who will be the right leader for the program’s future, not someone who will “win the press conference.” The AD also said that “resources won’t be an impediment to the University of Nebraska getting the right football coach to lead this program.”

Associate Head Coach Mikey Joseph has been named the Interim Head Football Coach, and the Director of Athletics told the gathered press that Joseph has been empowered to run the program as he sees fit. Alberts went as far as saying he has no intention of meddling in the staff’s day-to-day preparations.

Nebraska now prepares to host the Oklahoma Sooners at Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 11:00 am CT on FOX.

Stay tuned to Cornhuskers Wire for the latest regarding the search for a new head football coach, and find more social media reactions below.

Former LSU receivers coach named interim at Nebraska after Scott Frost’s firing

Mickey Joseph takes over as the head coach after just his third game as a Nebraska assistant.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers became the first program to begin a coaching search in 2022 on Sunday morning, as fifth-year coach Scott Frost was fired following a shocking 45-42 home loss to Georgia Southern. Frost, who was still searching for his first winning season with the ‘Huskers, started the season 1-2 after a 3-9 finish last fall.

Taking his place the rest of the way will be receivers coach [autotag]Mickey Joseph[/autotag], who joined Scott’s Frost staff this past offseason after spending five years in the same role at LSU. While in Baton Rouge, Joseph was responsible for the recruitment and development of players like [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag] and [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag].

Joseph becomes the first Black head coach in Nebraska history in any sport.

A longtime assistant who had spent the bulk of his career coaching in the state of Louisiana before he went to Lincoln, Joseph now has a massive opportunity to lead a Big Ten team and one of the most historic programs in college football.

Clay Helton beats Scott Frost and ultimately gets him fired at Nebraska

After Week 2 of the 2021 season, Clay Helton was fired by #USC. After Week 2 of the 2022 season, the #Huskers fired Scott Frost following a loss to Helton.

You simply cannot make this stuff up.

After Week 2 of the 2021 college football season, USC and athletic director Mike Bohn fired Clay Helton. They could not wait. USC was humiliated at home in a loss to Stanford. The Trojans pulled the trigger and eventually hired Lincoln Riley.

One year later — exactly 52 weeks later — after Week 2 of the 2022 college football season, Clay Helton got Scott Frost fired as the head coach at Nebraska. Helton’s Georgia Southern team beat Nebraska on the road in Lincoln, a final humiliation Nebraska fans would not put up with. Husker AD Trev Alberts felt he could not wait, even though Frost’s buyout was going to be substantially reduced on Oct. 1.

The symmetry of this is remarkable. Helton has been centrally involved in a high-profile coach firing in Week 2 of two consecutive college football seasons.

Cornhuskers Wire now faces what we faced at Trojans Wire one year ago: a season-long coaching search. Here is Cornhuskers Wire’s story on Frost’s firing.

Nebraska wanted Scott Frost gone so bad they paid him an extra $7.5 million to fire him before October

Some wallets in Nebraska are looking extra light this week

Only three weeks into the college football season we have our first major shakeup at a Power 5 school.

Scott Frost has been unceremoniously fired by Nebraska after a 1-2 start to the season. The school’s former National Championship-winning quarterback just couldn’t turn around the program in his first four years back in Lincoln.

The start to Year 5 under Frost had been so disastrous that the school was willing to pay him an extra $7.5 million to go away. Had the Huskers been able to hold out until October 1, Frost’s buyout would’ve dropped from $15 million to $7.5 million.

A loss to Northwestern in the season-opener, followed by a way-too-close-for-comfort win against North Dakota already had the coach on the hot seat. Saturday’s 45-42 defeat at the hands of Georgia Southern solidified his fate.

The former UCF coach finishes his Nebraska tenure with an abysmal 16-31 record (10-26 Big Ten).

Nebraska entered the season +1500 to win the conference. Those odds are significantly longer now at +6600. Frost may want to take that extra money and go on a nice long vacation somewhere without internet access.

Nebraska fires former Oregon OC Scott Frost after horrendous start

Former Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost was fired by Nebraska after an embarring home loss to Georgia Southern.

Sometimes you can’t come home again.

After an embarrassing loss to Georgia Southern at home, Nebraska informed head coach and former Oregon Duck offensive coordinator Scott Frost that his services will no longer be required.

This was to be expected after the Cornhuskers dropped the opener to Northwestern after some questionable coaching decisions and then the Cornhuskers had to surge in the second half to defeat North Dakota.

But the straw that broke the camel’s back was a 45-42 loss to the Eagles last night in Lincoln. Frost’s five-year tenure ended with a 16-31 mark.

His career has been a rollercoaster to say the least. Frost was a contender to take the Oregon job after Chip Kelly left, but the Ducks turned to Mark Helfrich instead. Frost, who was the receivers coach, stayed on as offensive coordinator for two seasons before landing the Central Florida job where he flourished.

In his second season with the Knights, Frost led that team to a perfect 13-0 year which ended with a Peach Bowl win over Auburn. UCF finished No. 6 in the polls.

Moving on to his alma mater Nebraska seemed like the next logical step, but for one reason or another, it never clicked. Frost has proven is a brilliant offensive mind and will surely find another job as an offensive coordinator or a head coach job at a smaller institution.

Scott Frost fired by Nebraska Cornhuskers

How will Nebraska outhit #Michigan this year, then?

Well, Michigan football won’t get ‘outhit’ in November it looks like.

It turns out favorite sons can get fired by the football teams they lead. Nebraska had hoped that it had hired its own version of Jim Harbaugh when it brought in Scott Frost, the former Huskers quarterback who had led UCF to an undefeated season. However, things have not gone well in Lincoln.

Over the past year-plus, Nebraska has played at the level of competition it’s faced — good or bad — taking Ohio State to the brink, but also losing games to what looks like a bad Northwestern team. Losing most games by one score, the Huskers just couldn’t get over the hump.

It came to a head this past weekend when Georgia Southern went into Memorial Stadium and took down Nebraska — a week after UNL had to hang on just to beat an FCS team. According to multiple reports, Frost has been ousted by Trev Alberts, with Mickey Joseph now taking over the program as interim coach.

Joseph is another former Nebraska quarterback, and he most recently was the team’s pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach. The Huskers avoid Ohio State this year, but play the Wolverines in Week 11.

Georgia Southern was coming off a 3-9 season. It downed the Cornhuskers, 45-42, in a stunning upset.
