Former Colorado tackle Savion Washington heads to Syracuse

Savion Washington has found a new team

Former Colorado football starting right tackle Savion Washington has found himself a new home.

The 6-foot-8, 320-pound transfer announced on social media Tuesday that he has committed to the Syracuse Orange.

Washington started his college career at Kent State before transferring to Colorado last offseason to reunite with former Golden Flashes coaches Sean Lewis and Bill O’Boyle. The Akron, Ohio native played in ten games with the Buffs, including nine starts at right tackle, while battling injuries. Pro Football Focus gave him a 69.4 pass-blocking grade last season in 660 total snaps.

Washington should be competing for a starting offensive line spot at Syracuse, which will be looking to protect new quarterback Kyle McCord.

With Washington officially out of Boulder, Houston transfer Kahlil Benson should have the inside track at right tackle, although Colorado is actively pursuing other targets in the transfer portal.

Former Colorado starting tackle Savion Washington taking talents to transfer portal

Colorado’s starting right tackle from last season is entering the portal

Savion Washington, Colorado’s starting right tackle in nine games last season, will reportedly enter the college football transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

This marks the second time Washington has entered the portal in his college career. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound graduate student was previously at Kent State from 2020-22.

An Akron, Ohio native, Washington missed some time last fall due to an ankle injury but still managed 660 snaps across 10 games played. He finished the season with a Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade of 69.4.

Washington’s departure is somewhat expected considering how much talent head coach Deion Sanders has added this offseason on the offensive line. With about two weeks remaining in Colorado’s spring camp, Indiana transfer Kahlil Benson appears to be O-line coach Phil Loadholt’s top option at right tackle.

Fawcett also reported Monday that fellow Colorado players Jaden Milliner-Jones, Chazz Wallace and Deeve Harris plan on entering the transfer portal.

Offensive tackle Savion Washington returns to practice for CU Buffs

Colorado’s starting right tackle returned to practice on Monday

After missing the past couple of games with an ankle injury, it appears that the Colorado Buffaloes will be getting back a key piece to their offensive line as they travel to Pasadena this weekend to take on UCLA.

It was shared by Well Off Media that starting right tackle Savion Washington returned to practice on Monday and he appears likely to play against the Bruins. Washington will be a welcomed addition back into the starting lineup for Shedeur Sanders, who remains one of the most-sacked quarterbacks in college football.

Watch the clip below as Washington addresses the team about getting back on track this weekend against the Bruins.

Savion Washington a fan of the ‘daily grind’ that comes with playing OT

Savion Washington spoke with our Tony Cosolo about the “daily grind” that comes with playing on the O-line

Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders raided the Kent State Golden Flashes this offseason. Not only was he able to secure the services of offensive coordinator Sean Lewis and offensive line coach Bill O’Boyle, but he also snagged two offensive line pieces.

One was guard Jack Bailey and the other was right tackle Savion Washington, who once earned the nickname “Man Mountain.” Washington is a huge — literally and figuratively — addition to the Buffs’ offensive line. I asked him about the relationship he has with Lewis and O’Boyle and how that has helped him transition to life in Boulder as a member of the Buffaloes:

“They’ve made the transition 10 times easier for me,” Washington said. “I’m not going into a new playbook. I’m not doing new techniques. It’s all the same for me. We’ll have meetings and I remember everybody else is acting weird. And I’m like, this is a normal meeting for me. I’m used to everything.”

With the size that he has, it’s no shock that Washington played as a two-way athlete in high school before choosing to focus on offensive tackle. I also asked him about what he likes most about playing the position:

“The daily grind of it,” Washington said. “I like one-on ones. During one-on-ones you’re working on everything. If a defender is taking an outside rush, I know I have to change my set a little bit to counter the outside rush. I like how I have to think about football. It’s more than just playing. It’s really a strategy game.”

Transfer Profile: Five things to know about new Colorado OT Savion Washington

Opposing linemen will have a hard time scaling Mt. Washington next season

The Colorado Buffaloes’ roster has been completely remade this offseason, and the offensive line has not been immune to change. There will probably be at least three new starters on the OL and there is no bigger addition, literally, than Kent State transfer tackle Savion Washington.

Washington, standing at an impressive 6-foot-8, 320 pounds, was in at right tackle with the starters during the spring game and looks to have the inside track to be the Buffs’ starter there in the season opener against TCU. Given his background (spoiler), this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Below are the five things you need to know about the tackle I’ve nicknamed “Mt. Washington.”

Five CU Buffs to watch this spring

These five Buffs are worth keeping an eye on this spring

The countdown is nearly complete as the 2023 CU Buffs begin spring football practices on Sunday.

Players and coaches alike, there are plenty of new faces in Boulder this spring who are eager to get Colorado back to its glory days. Those additions include head coach Deion Sanders, former top overall recruit Travis Hunter, new Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders and a number of talented incoming freshmen.

This spring is, of course, an important one for a program in the midst of an unprecedented transition led by Coach Prime.

Below are five players — all new Buffs — who I predict will have a big spring season:

Buffs OL coach Bill O’Boyle raves about Savion Washington

Bill O’Boyle was more than pleased that Savion Washington followed him and Sean Lewis to Colorado

The long list of Colorado Buffaloes’ incoming transfer players is still growing after USF WR Xavier Weaver joined the team this past week.

But one of the more under-the-radar additions is OT Savion Washington.

Washington came to Colorado from Kent State and is reuniting with his former head coach, Sean Lewis, who took the offensive coordinator position under head coach Deion Sanders.

With spring football coming up, the Buffs’ coaching staff is figuring out which players they want to utilize more, and Washington sure caught the attention of OL coach Bill O’Boyle, who also comes to Boulder from Kent State. During a press conference on Thursday, O’Boyle went on and on about the talent that Washington brings to the table.

Washington announced his decision back on Dec. 19, and he has two years of eligibility remaining.

Colorado’s roster has enjoyed a massive turnaround, and new QB Shedeur Sanders could have a strong O-line blocking for him and a flurry of other offensive weapons.

If Washington can live up to his potential, this could end up being one of the best transfer portal additions of the offseason.
