Savion Washington a fan of the ‘daily grind’ that comes with playing OT

Savion Washington spoke with our Tony Cosolo about the “daily grind” that comes with playing on the O-line

Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders raided the Kent State Golden Flashes this offseason. Not only was he able to secure the services of offensive coordinator Sean Lewis and offensive line coach Bill O’Boyle, but he also snagged two offensive line pieces.

One was guard Jack Bailey and the other was right tackle Savion Washington, who once earned the nickname “Man Mountain.” Washington is a huge — literally and figuratively — addition to the Buffs’ offensive line. I asked him about the relationship he has with Lewis and O’Boyle and how that has helped him transition to life in Boulder as a member of the Buffaloes:

“They’ve made the transition 10 times easier for me,” Washington said. “I’m not going into a new playbook. I’m not doing new techniques. It’s all the same for me. We’ll have meetings and I remember everybody else is acting weird. And I’m like, this is a normal meeting for me. I’m used to everything.”

With the size that he has, it’s no shock that Washington played as a two-way athlete in high school before choosing to focus on offensive tackle. I also asked him about what he likes most about playing the position:

“The daily grind of it,” Washington said. “I like one-on ones. During one-on-ones you’re working on everything. If a defender is taking an outside rush, I know I have to change my set a little bit to counter the outside rush. I like how I have to think about football. It’s more than just playing. It’s really a strategy game.”
