UFC on ABC 1 medical suspensions: Calvin Kattar, Justin Tafa face lengthy time off

UFC on ABC 1 headliner Calvin Kattar absorbed 445 significant strikes over the span of 25 minutes.

MMA Junkie on Monday obtained the full list of suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com, the Association of Boxing Commissions’ official record keeper.

Tyson Chartier, Kattar’s manager and head coach, told MMA Junkie on Sunday that in addition to a broken nose suffered in the unanimous decision loss, his fighter also received eight staples in his head.

His opponent, Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) walked away relatively unscathed, and received a 30-day suspension for a “hard bout.”

Only one fighter from the event’s undercard was handed as lengthy of a suspension as Kattar. Preliminary card competitor and UFC heavyweight [autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] also received a potential 180-day suspension. Tafa (4-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) suffered a split decision loss to Brazil’s [autotag]Carlos Felipe[/autotag].

The Australian will have to sit on the sidelines for the six-month duration, or until his left thumb is cleared by a doctor.

Glover Teixeira and Anthony Smith are facing months-long medical suspensions as a result of their UFC on ESPN+ 29 headlining clash.

The Florida State Boxing Commission, which oversaw the event, has suspended Smith (33-15 MMA, 8-5 UFC) a minimum of 60 days. MMA Junkie obtained a list of the UFC 249 athletes’ medical suspensions from the Florida Boxing Commission on Thursday.

Five fighters made north of six figures Wednesday at UFC on ESPN+ 29, not including several who earned post-fight bonuses.

Veteran fighters [autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag], [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] and [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] walked away from UFC on ESPN+ 29 having pocketed a solid chunk of change Wednesday.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Arlovski (29-9 MMA, 18-13 UFC) led all fighters with a disclosed payout of $325,000 for his win over [autotag]Philipe Lins[/autotag]. As a result of his split decision win over [autotag]Ovince Saint Preux[/autotag], Rothwell (38-12 MMA, 8-6 UFC) earned $260,000. For his fifth-round TKO win over [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag], Teixeira (31-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) earned $230,000.

Two other victorious fighters also took home six-figure disclosed paydays: including the aforementioned Smith, as well as UFC lightweight [autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag].

The disclosed UFC on ESPN+ 29 salaries from the Florida State Boxing Commission, which oversaw the event at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., first were reported by MMA Fighting.

For example, UFC officials handed out additional $50,000 UFC 249 fight-night bonuses to Teixeira and Dober for “Performance of the Night,” and Azure and Kelleher for “Fight of the Night.”

In other words, the above figures are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.

UFC on ESPN+ 29 fighters took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay, a program that launched after the UFC’s deal with Reebok.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fighters from Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN+ 29 event took home event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $166,000.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC on ESPN+ 29 took place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The entire card streamed ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Reebok’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $3,500 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,000; 6-10 bouts get $5,000; 11-15 bouts earn $10,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $15,000; and 21 bouts and more get $20,000. Additionally, champions earn $40,000 while title challengers get $30,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Originally scheduled for April 18, Sijara Eubanks vs. Sarah Moras is closing in on a new fight date.

The fight was originally scheduled to take place April 18 at UFC 249 in Brooklyn, N.Y. However, the card was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. A revamped lineup under the same event designation was set for May 9, but Eubanks (4-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) vs. Moras (6-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC) was not included.

Instead of fighting at UFC 249, the pair of bantamweights will compete on Wednesday, May 13. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie after an initial report by The Sports Daily.

The May event takes place May 13 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The main card is expected to air on ESPN and stream on ESPN+.

Eubanks looks to turn things around after a winless year in 2019. The Springfield, Mass. native dropped back-to-back fights against Aspen Ladd and Bethe Correia, bringing her official record to .500.

As for Canada’s Moras, “Cheesecake” snapped a two-fight losing skid in her most recent bout in September. The 31-year-old defeated Liana Jouja by third-round TKO at UFC 242.

With the coronavirus pandemic impacting the sports world as a whole, the UFC was not immune. The promotion postponed three events but remained focused on hosting UFC 249 on April 18, even after travel restrictions were implemented around the globe and lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov – who was supposed to fight [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] in the main event – fell off the card.

Ferguson (25-3 MMA, 15-1 UFC) now meets [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] (21-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) for the interim lightweight title in the headliner, but the UFC still has not announced an official location, although broadcast partner ESPN reported on Sunday that a venue on the West Coast is close to being finalized.

The situation has caused UFC matchmakers to shuffle the deck from the original UFC 249 lineup meant for Brooklyn, N.Y. Some fights have fallen off, while others were added.

The UFC 249 lineup continues to grow with the addition of a women’s bantamweight bout.

A women’s bantamweight fight is the latest addition to April’s UFC 249 lineup.

[autotag]Sijara Eubanks[/autotag] and [autotag]Sarah Moras[/autotag] are set to meet at the event. MMA Junkie confirmed matchup with a person with knowledge of the situation. The person asked to remain anonymous as the UFC has yet to make an official announcement. Newsday.com was the first to report the news.

UFC 249 takes place April 18 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims expected for ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.

Eubanks (4-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) looks to turn things around after a winless year in 2019. The Springfield, Mass. native dropped back-to-back fights against Aspen Ladd and Bethe Correia, bringing her official record to .500.

As for Canada’s Moras (6-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC), “Cheesecake” snapped a two-fight losing skid in her most recent bout in September. The 31-year-old defeated Liana Jouja by third-round TKO at UFC 242.
