FINAL SCORE: Cardinals fall 36-26 after taking 16-0 1st-half lead

Jimmy Garoppolo has a career high against the Cardinals again as he sends the Cardinals to their fourth straight loss.

The Arizona Cardinals came out and was ready to play on Sunday against a shorthanded San Francisco 49ers. They got out to a 16-0 lead but their defense could not make it hold up.

Jimmy Garoppolo was intercepted twice but threw for a career-high 424 yards and matched his career-high four of touchdown passes against the Cardinals, including the game-winning score with 31 seconds left in the game. The Cardinals lose 36-26 and fall to 3-7-1.

Here’s how it went down.

49ers 36, Cardinals 26

This ends up looking much worse than it was. The Cardinals use a last-ditch effort to score with some laterals, but they lose the ball and the 49ers score a touchdown as time expires.

Fumble

With under a minute left in the game, the Cardinals hoped to find some late-game magic. They didn’t. On their first play, rookie receiver KeeSean Johnson fumbles the ball, giving the 49ers the ball to run the clock out.

49ers 30, Cardinals 26

Well, the defense can’t get a stop. The offense is forced to punt after only three plays and then the 49ers get into field goal range. The Cardinals blitz and Jimmy Garoppolo completes a pass to running back Jeff Wilson. He goes 25 yards to score the touchdown and give the 49ers the lead with under a minute left.

PICK

Rookie Jalen Thompson ends a 49ers drive in scoring position by intercepting a tipped pass. The Cardinals have the ball with a three-point lead and 4:32 left in the game.

Cardinals 26, 49ers 23

The Cardinals start relying on the running game. Kenyan Drake gets a couple of first downs, Larry Fitzgerald has a reception and Kyler Murray scampers for a 22-yard TD run. The Cardinals now have 130 rushing yards.

49ers 23, Cardinals 19

The Cardinals get killed on screen passes and by fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Receiver Kendrick Bourne gets a two-yard touchdown reception. It is Jimmy Garoppolo’s third TD pass of the game. They don’t get the two-point attempt, so they have a four-point, fourth-quarter lead.

Cardinals 19, 49ers 17

The Cardinals take advantage of the turnover but only get a field goal. Andy Isabella doesn’t get his head turned around to see a back shoulder throw that would have given them the first down and Zane Gonzalez hits from 43 yards to take back the lead.

More 49ers injuries

Receiver Emmanuel Sanders gets looked at after being tackled hard. He entered the game with injured ribs. 49ers CB K’Waun Williams leaves with an injury and defensive end Dee Ford is ruled out with an injury. Receiver Deebo Samuel leaves with a shoulder injury after an incredible catch.

PICK!

The 49ers look like they are about to extend the lead but Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t see Jordan Hicks. He picks up his third interception of the season and returns it to San Francisco territory. It is a big play.

It erases what is an atrocious pass interference call on Joe Walker.

49ers 17, Cardinals 16

The 49ers have erased the lead. Tevin Coleman starts off the drive with a 37-yards catch and 15 yards get added to the play after Zach Kerr is called for roughing the passer. Ross Dwelley gets his second touchdown catch of the game and the Niners are in the lead.

Cardinals 16, 49ers 10

The 49ers close the half with a field goal and now have momentum.

Cardinals 16, 49ers 7

The 49ers finally get going offensively. A 57-yards screen play to Rickie James gets them to the 25-yard line and Jimmy Garoppolo throws a touchdown pass to tight end Ross Dwelley, who is replacing the injured George Kittle.

Cardinals 16, 49ers 0

The Cardinals do not score on their third possession but do on their fourth. It is a big play. Kyler Murray throws second touchdown pass of the afternoon, another five-yarder, as Pharoh Cooper jukes the defender for the score.

Cardinals 9, 49ers 0

After forcing a three-and-out for the Niners, the Cardinals again keep moving. They go 81 yards on 11 plays and Larry Fitzgerald is left wide open for a five-yard touchdown catch. Gonzalez misses the extra point.

Cardinals 3, 49ers 0

The Cardinals get the ball first and move the ball well. The Cardinals get an incomplete pass call turned into a pass interference on a Kliff Kingsbury challenge and appear to score a touchdown, but Christian Kirk is called for offensive pass interference. They settle on a 26-yard Zane Gonzalez field goal to take the early lead.

Kendrick Bourne holds on, gives 49ers lead with 3-yard TD

Drops weren’t a problem for the 49ers when they took a 23-19 lead over the Cardinals.

There weren’t any drop issues for the 49ers on their 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended the third quarter and opened the fourth.

Deebo Samuel made a remarkable grab on the sideline, then Kendrick Bourne snatched a 3-yard touchdown grab to give San Francisco the lead.

Those are two huge plays from a receiving corps missing its two best pass catchers. Emmanuel Sanders is dealing with a rib injury and hasn’t been in the game since an awkward tackle early in the third quarter.

49ers vs. Cardinals: 3 things that stood out in the 3rd quarter

The 49ers started the half with a scoring drive but wasn’t able to get on the board again despite another long series.

The 49ers started the half with a scoring drive, but they weren’t able to get on the board again despite a long series that ended in an interception. Arizona was able to take the lead with a Zane Gonzalez field goal late in the quarter.

It’s 19-17 heading into the final quarter in Santa Clara. Here’s what stood out in the third quarter:

The Ross Dwelley game

The 49ers offense looked out of sorts against Seattle without George Kittle, but Ross Dwelley has helped the group pull it together on Sunday. Dwelley has stepped into the security blanket role and has two touchdowns including one that gave the 49ers the lead in the third quarter. His production has been a pleasant surprise for an offense that has been up-and-down on Sunday.

DeForest Buckner forcing a three-and-out

Buckner came up with a big individual defensive effort following the Dwelley touchdown. The drive started with a first-down sack from Buckner to give Arizona a second-and-13 when he was able to tip a screen pass from Kyler Murray to Kenyan Drake and get enough of it that while Drake caught it, the ball floated long enough for the defense to swarm for a loss. Buckner creating plays was a welcome sight for a defensive line that hasn’t been able to create much pressure on Murray.

The dreaded “what did he see there” Garoppolo interception

It hasn’t happened in a while but Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception that makes you wonder what he saw on the play. It was a third-and-5 at the Arizona 12-yard-line when Garoppolo threw a pass allegedly intended for Emmanuel Sanders but right to Jordan Hicks who returned it 48 yards to set the Arizona offense off with good field position. It was a terrible time for the turnover as the offense was knocking on the door to extend their lead to two scores.

Deebo Samuel makes incredible juggling catch

The 49ers drop problem didn’t matter for Deebo Samuel against the Cardinals.

Deebo Samuel might’ve had the catch of the year Sunday against the Cardinals.

Patrick Peterson was flagged for interference, but it didn’t matter with Samuel going over the top of the corner, then juggling it, and eventually securing it as he went to the sideline.

It’s tough to find a more impressive catch than this:

DeForest Buckner notches sack, uses Ronald Blair’s celebration

DeForest Buckner paid tribute to injured DE Ronald Blair with his sack celebration.

DeForest Buckner opened the second half for the 49ers defense with a sack of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.

He celebrated by doing Ronald Blair’s signature sack celebration.

Blair tore his ACL on a sack vs. the Seahawks last week and is out for the year. That’s a cool tribute to a teammate by Buckner.

Ross Dwelley finds the end zone again, gives 49ers 17-16 lead

The Cardinals just can’t stop Ross Dwelley.

The 49ers offense cruised down the field to open the second half behind a six-play, 84-yard drive that resulted in a go-ahead touchdown.

Jimmy Garoppolo was extremely sharp and overcame a couple penalties to get his team in the end zone. His second touchdown pass of the game was also his second to Ross Dwelley.

The 5-yard score put the 49ers in front for the first time all game.

49ers vs. Cardinals: 3 things that stood out in the 2nd quarter

The 49ers owned the second quarter after a dominant first 15 minutes by Arizona.

The 49ers offense looked more put together in the second quarter, driving down the field for two scoring drives. The defense held to Arizona to seven points after allowing two scoring drives in the first quarter.

With the 49ers trailing 16-10 heading into the half, here’s what stood out in the second quarter:

Murray has time

What might be the most alarming trend is that the 49ers haven’t been able to create pressure on Kyler Murray. Murray hasn’t had to move much in the pocket and when it does it’s on a designed run. The 49ers defense has been able to get to the quarterback rushing just four all season, but haven’t been able to affect Murray doing so Sunday. Robert Saleh may need to draw up more blitzes to put more pressure on Murray or else he will continue to tear up the 49ers defense.

It took awhile, but the 49ers offense showed up

The 49ers offense had two total yards entering the second quarter but one play may have turned the tide. Jimmy Garoppolo hit Richie James on a screen pass that resulted in a 57-yard play to get the offense in the red zone for the first time. The drive ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to Ross Dwelley. The drive followed the trend of quick drives, taking just 1:11 off the clock.

Another Sherman pass interference but the defense holds this time

Richard Sherman was called for his third pass interference on a third-and-11 that gave Arizona a first down. But for the first time on Sunday, a Sherman pass interference didn’t lead to Arizona points when the defense forced a punt four plays later. The big play was a Dee Ford sack on second-and-9 that put Arizona in a third-and-long situation. The call against Sherman was the third time he was called for pass interference on Christian Kirk, so it appears Kliff Kingsbury likes that matchup and it will be one to watch in the second half.

Dee Ford questionable to return with hamstring injury

The 49ers could take another hit to their already thin defensive line.

The 49ers announced late in the second half defensive end Dee Ford is questionable to return with a hamstring injury.

He left the field gingerly after chasing down Kyler Murray for a sack on the Cardinals’ previous drive.

Ford has been limited nearly all year in practice with a quad injury, so a hamstring injury on top of that isn’t ideal. San Francisco is already thin at defensive end with Ronald Blair out for the year with a torn ACL.

Ford was worked on in the medical tent before walking over to join his teammates at the end of the bench.

Dee Ford chases down Kyler Murray for sack

Dee Ford finally got some pressure on Cardinals QB Kyler Murray.

The 49ers had a hard time flustering Kyler Murray on Sunday, but they did get to him on a second-and-9 midway through the second quarter.

Damontre Moore came off the edge to force Murray out of the pocket, then Dee Ford ran him down for sack No. 6.5 of the year.
