49ers highlight: Fred Warner snags INT in 2nd consecutive game

WATCH: Fred Warner snags his 2nd INT in as many weeks.

The 49ers defense showed up early against the Browns. Cleveland QB PJ Walker telegraphed a throw in the middle of the field and LB Fred Warner stepped in front for an easy interception.

San Francisco’s offense didn’t capitalize though. They went backward and then missed a 54-yard field goal.

For Warner it was his second week in a row with an interception. He also came up with one against Dallas.

The 49ers got on the board on their first offensive drive against the Browns. They went 84 yards in five plays thanks to a pair of Cleveland personal fouls. Christian McCaffrey had a strong drive with 32 rushing yards, and then a 13-yard touchdown catch on a shovel pass. McCaffrey has now scored a touchdown in 15 consecutive games including the playoffs.

The 49ers opening drive against the Rams in Week 2 couldn’t have gone much better. They went 75 yards on 11 plays and punctuated the series with a 14-yard touchdown run by RB Christian McCaffrey.

Brock Purdy was six-for-six on the drive for 49 yards. McCaffrey added 26 rushing yards on five attempts.

The 49ers run defense struggled through the early part of Sunday’s preseason opener. They came up with back-to-back stops early in the second quarter though thanks to two cornerbacks. Samuel Womack III got a third-and-1 stop to bring up fourth-and-short. Las Vegas went for it and Ambry Thomas flew in off the edge to hit Raiders RB Zamir White for a loss to force a turnover on downs.

The 49ers on Monday held their hottest practice of the Summer so far on ’87 Day’ where the club honors the late Dwight Clark and helps raise awareness for victims of ALS and their families.

The players, undeterred by a warm Santa Clara morning, put together a good session with big plays by both sides. At this point of camp the offense and defense playing at relatively equal levels is a good sign.

Highlights from Monday’s practice were posted by the club and features some of the top plays on both sides of the ball with pass breakups, long receptions, and some nice footwork from receivers near the sidelines.

The 49ers will finish up the week at home with a practice Tuesday before heading to Las Vegas for joint practices with the Raiders on Thursday and Friday.

Arik Armstead ends Seahawks 1st drive with sack

The 49ers defense allowed nine yards on the Seahawks first play from scrimmage. A stop for a loss by 49ers DL Javon Kinlaw on second down put Seattle in a third-and-2. On third down, defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead went to work on the left side and it was Armstead he fought through for a drive-ending sack.

The 49ers opened their game against the Buccaneers with an impressive offensive drive. QB Brock Purdy got walloped on the first play and drew a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty. Then he missed a throw to Deebo Samuel. After that he settled in though and the 49ers capped a 67-yard, five-play drive with Samuel’s third rushing touchdown of the season.

The list of great plays by 49ers WR Deebo Samuel is long, but his 57-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown against the Rams on Monday night was the best of them.

A quick analysis of the play:

Nick Bosa got his fifth sack of the season, but watch Arik Armstead clear the way.

Nick Bosa got his fifth sack of the season during the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 4 showdown against the Rams. On a third-and-9, he found a pathway that defensive tackle Arik Armstead helped clear out. Rams QB Matthew Stafford never saw him and the 49ers forced a punt.

The 49ers defensive line is cooking. That group was supposed to be good this year, but they’re looking extra dominant against a Bears offensive front that is not strong. Nick Bosa was held without a sack until a third-and-8 late in the first quarter when he blew up the Bears’ left tackle and carried him into QB Justin Fields for his first sack of 2022.
