Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Dodgers (7-3) travel to San Diego to take on the San Diego Padres (6-4) in some Monday-night (9:10 p.m. ET) West Coast baseball at Petco Park. We analyze the Dodgers-Padres betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Dodgers at Padres: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Walker Buehler vs. RHP Chris Paddack

Buehler owns a 3.14 ERA in 63 career games. He clocked a 3.26 ERA, fanning 10.6 batters per nine innings, in 2019.

  • Buehler lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his Tuesday start against the Astros. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk.
  • The Dodger right-hander has a limited but dominant line against San Diego batters (.406 OPS allowed, 46 K%).

Paddack has a 1.64 ERA through two starts (11 IP, 1 BB, 10 SO). The righty posted a 3.33 ERA in his 2019 rookie season.

  • Current Dodgers batters own a robust .998 OPS against Paddack. The Padres hurler faced LA three times last season, logging a 5.65 ERA in the process.
  • The Dodgers have slashed a .253/.337/.451 line overall. They have stumbled a bit against lefties, but their line there is weighed down by a .228 average on balls in play.

Moneyline (ML)

For the Dodgers, Monday’s contest marks the opening of stop No. 3 in a three-city road trip. LA is 5-1 on the trip so far. The Padres are returning home after playing in San Francisco and Denver (posting a mark of 3-4).

The Los Angeles injuries are meaningful, but the Dodgers are an incredibly deep club that’s able to weather a couple key regulars being down. LA has won five straight at Petco; the price on consecutive win No. 6 is fair. TAKE LOS ANGELES -129.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Dodgers pays out a profit of $7.75.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

  • Los Angeles -1 (-106)
  • San Diego +1 (-115)

PASS ON THE RUN LINE.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both bullpens have registered first-division production thus far. The Under is 7-1 over the Dodgers’ last eight games; Paddack is a homebody, logging a sub-3.00 over 68 career innings at Petco. TAKE THE UNDER 8 (-110).

Davies in 2019: 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 31 games started.

Prediction

Padres 5, Giants 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Padres (-143) have looked good through four games after winning the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, three games to one. The Giants (+130) surprisingly split their opening series against the defending National League West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego was projected to win more games than San Francisco and has looked more impressive in its victories than the Giants, so I lean to them in this game.

But I do not like the Padres (-143) pricepoint and I am PASSING on this moneyline.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

I leaned toward San Diego (-1.5, +105) in the moneyline handicap, but that doesn’t mean I like San Francisco (+1.5, -129). There’s a lot of reasons to like the Padres here, and on the moneyline, so call me a nit, but I’m PASSING on the run line, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both starting pitchers have pitched well in recent outings against their respective opponents. Davies is 0-2 in his four career starts against the Giants but has a low 2.05 ERA in those games. Samardzija has a 3.38 ERA and is 1-1 in his last five starts against the Padres.

The injury report is crucial here. The absences of Posey (out for the year), Belt, and Longoria don’t bode well for a lineup that scored the third-fewest runs per game in the majors last season. Also, the Padres could be without Hosmer, who drove in seven runs in his two games.

Take the UNDER 8.5 (-110).

The Arizona Diamondbacks try to avenge a 7-2 Opening Day loss in Game 2 of their season-opening series against the San Diego Padres Saturday at Petco Park. First pitch is set for 9:10 p.m. ET. We analyze the Diamondbacks-Padres MLB betting odds and lines, with betting picks and best bets around the matchup.

Diamondbacks at Padres: Projected starting pitchers

Ray: 12-8 over 33 2019 starts with a 4.34 ERA through 174 1/3 innings. Career-best 12.13 strikeouts per nine innings.

  • Suffered from a suppressed 75.1% left-on-base percentage and elevated 20% home run/fly ball ratio.

Prediction

Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4

Moneyline (ML)

Saturday’s line has been skewed by Friday’s lopsided result. The Diamondbacks enter Game 2 as +120 underdogs with the Padres priced as -134 favorites to start 2-0.

Lamet’s home splits in 2019 are rather worrisome and Ray’s K rate should be a big advantage against a young Padres lineup early in the season. The D-Backs recorded seven hits against the Padres’ eight in the series opener, as the majority of the damage came via the seven walks allowed by Arizona pitchers.

Bet the DIAMONDBACKS (+120) to pull even as a solid underdog value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Diamondbacks to win would return a profit of $12.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The real money will be made on the moneyline for the Diamondbacks, but ARIZONA +1.5 (-189) can also be taken on the run line for a little insurance.

The D-Backs were fourth in baseball with a 90-72 ATS record in 2019, and they were 10-9 ATS against their National League West rivals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 8 (-110) in a weaker pitching matchup than we had Friday, when the two teams totaled nine runs. Both of Saturday’s starters can get into trouble and aren’t safe bets to go too deep into this game. The D-Backs used four relievers in the opener and San Diego used three.

Esten’s 2020 MLB betting record: 4-2

The Arizona Diamondbacks take on the San Diego Padres in their 2020 MLB season opener Friday at Petco Park for a 9:10 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Diamondbacks-Padres MLB betting odds and lines, with betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Diamondbacks at Padres: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Madison Bumgarner vs. RHP Chris Paddack

Bumgarner (2019, San Francisco Giants): 9-9, 3.90 ERA, 203 K, 43 BB

  • Bumgarner is making his Arizona debut but is an Opening Day starter for the sixth time.
  • He was 2-1 in four starts against the Padres in 2019 with an ERA of 4.00 and .852 WHIP.

Paddack (2019): 9-7, 3.33 ERA, 153K, 31 BB

  • Paddack was stellar in three starts against Arizona in 2019, going 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

Prediction

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Padres are favored in their season opener at -133, while the D-Backs are +120 underdogs. Paddack dominated Arizona in 2019 and Arizona’s offense was anemic in their tune-up games in Los Angeles. Take the PADRES -133.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on San Diego will win $7.50 in profit.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Arizona was one of the best against the run line in 2019, going 90-72 against the spread. This will be a closely contested game. Bet the DIAMONDBACKS +1.5 (-182).

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 8.5 runs. Arizona’s lineup is improved over last year and averaged five runs per game. Bumgarner will get out of the gate slowly and the D-Backs will rally. Take the OVER 8.5 (-110).

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the San Diego Padres win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the San Diego Padres will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the San Diego Padres win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Padres MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

San Diego Padres’ 2019 recap

The 2019 season looked promising for the Padres early; San Diego was in first place in the National League West through 19 games, behind the hot-hitting of rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. and respectable pitching from a young pitching staff.

They were 45-45 heading into the All-Star break but injuries to Tatis and struggles hitting—their lineup was 28th in batting average and third in strikeouts post-All-Star break—caused them to finish with a disappointing 70-92 record. As far as their quick 2019 betting recap: The Padres had a 76-86 run line record and Over/Under record of 73-76-13.

San Diego Padres’ offseason

San Diego has made splashes in free agency—signing 1B Eric Hosmer in 2018 and 3B Manny Machado in 2019—but mostly stood pat this offseason. The Padres have the 13th highest payroll in the majors. Their only notable additions were RP Drew Pomeranz and 2B Brian Dozier, who’s actually in the minor leagues at the moment.

The more notable additions were via trade, with OFs Trent Grisham and Tommy Pham arriving in San Diego.

San Diego Padres’ 2020 schedule

San Diego’s 60-game season starts when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, July 24. The season wraps up Sunday, Sept. 27 at the San Francisco Giants.

Every team will play a regional schedule and how that rounds out for the Padres is they’ll play 40 games against NL West foes and the other 20 games against AL West teams. San Diego is the second-favorite to win the NL West, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

How many games will the San Diego Padres win in 2020?

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday, July 8 at noon ET.

LOVE THE PADRES OVER 30.5 WINS in 2020. The 60-man player pool rule for 2020 should benefit the Padres who have the second-best farm system in baseball, according to MLB.com. This holds true even after calling up 20-year-old Tatis who hit .317 with 22 home runs and 53 RBI in just 89 games last season.

The starting rotation is a bunch of kids in their mid-20s and a few could take steps forward. If they don’t, again the Padres have awesome pitching prospects they could put into the lineup. Also, they have two players (Machado and Tatis) tied for top-seven favorites to win NL MVP. If these big names stay healthy and rake, the Padres are going to be dangerous.

Plus, through 60 games in 2019, San Diego was 31-29, which would push them Over this year’s 30.5 wins total.

San Diego Padres’ playoff odds

Based on the value here, I LIKE the PADRES TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS (+320). I expect the Dodgers to win another NL West crown, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility for the Padres to make the race interesting. The bet mostly hinges on them earning a wild-card berth and, for me, betting $50 to win $160 for San Diego to make the postseason is worth it.

San Diego Padres’ World Series odds

The most likely outcome in the NL West race is the Dodgers winning it so that would force the Padres to win the wild card. It’s tough seeing this young pitching staff winning three straight road playoff series en route to a World Series title. PASS.

How many games will the San Diego Padres win in 2020?

Analyzing the San Diego Padres’ projected win total for the 2020 MLB season, along with their odds to win the NL West and World Series.

The San Diego Padres look to finally take a significant step forward in 2020 in their quest to make the MLB postseason for the first time since 2006. Manager Jayce Tingler will lead a squad flush with young, top prospects with several notable additions made over the offseason. Today, we focus on the Padres’ 2020 regular-season win total and World Series odds. Do the Padres have what it takes? Let’s analyze:

San Diego Padres 2019 wins

The Padres struggled to a 70-92 finish in 2019 after landing prized free-agent addition 3B Manny Machado last winter. They finished last in the National League West for the third time in four years and were 19 games back of the final wild-card spot in the NL. They were 36-45 at home at 34-47 on the road.

San Diego Padres offseason

The Padres open 2020 with a new-look outfield. Tommy Pham was acquired via trade from the Tampa Bay Rays and Trent Grisham joins the Friars from the Milwaukee Brewers. Wil Myers is the only returning member expected to have a starting role.

SP Zach Davis also came over from the Brewers and RP Emiliano Pagan was part of a separate trade with the Rays. INF Jurickson Profar was brought over from the Oakland Athletics.

Machado and youngsters Fernando Tatis Jr.Francisco Mejia and Ty France will be also counted on to lead the Padres to the promised land.

San Diego Padres odds to win NL West division

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Lines last updated at Friday at 12:20 p.m. ET.

The Padres have the third-best odds to win their division at +1200. They trail the Los Angeles Dodgers (-1000) and Arizona Diamondbacks (+1000) and are well ahead of the Colorado Rockies (+5000) and San Francisco Giants (+10000). They haven’t won the division since going back-to-back in 2005 and 2006, and they haven’t even finished second since 2010.

Leave the Dodgers be as commanding favorites in the NL West. The Padres’ best route to the postseason will be via the wild-card race.

San Diego Padres World Series odds

Pitching will be the biggest question for the Padres this season after failing to land one of the marquee No. 1 starters available in free agency this winter. They’re entering the season with +4000 odds to win the 2020 World Series, putting them on par with the division-rival Diamondbacks and ahead of the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays (+6600).

The Padres will need everything to go right for their rotation to hold up through the full season, but the offense is stacked with depth at every key position. The bullpen is another strength to begin the season and will allow Tingler to get creative with his pitcher usage. The Padres are a great value pick and bettors shouldn’t be looking at longer odds.

How many games will the Padres win in 2020?

The Padres’ win total is set at 82.5 to begin the 2020 season. The 83 wins needed to hit the Over would be their most since the aforementioned 2010 campaign when they went 90-72. Still, the OVER 82.5 (-132) is the bet to make for what should be one of MLB’s most-improved teams this season.

Padres phase out their spring training hat after fans say design resembled a swastika

How did they miss that?

Earlier this month, MLB and New Era offered a look at the 2020 spring training caps, and almost all of them were bad. But the San Diego Padres’ cap was especially problematic for a different reason:

Fans thought the design resembled a swastika.

The brown and gold caps, which featured the “Swinging Friar” at the center and an “SD” over the body, were unofficially tabled as the team reported to spring training camp in Arizona this week. Pitchers and catchers went through workouts wearing the regular season “SD” caps, and the team plans to generally keep it that way.

But really, how didn’t anyone with MLB, New Era or the Padres catch that ahead of time? It’s something you can’t unsee once you spot it.

Still, the Padres framed the hat switch as them embracing their fans’ positive reaction to the traditional brown and gold “SD” caps rather than them inadvertently printing a swastika over the Swinging Friar.

Padres chief marketing officer Wayne Partello said to The San Diego Union-Tribune on Tuesday:

“Following our offseason uniform rebrand and the overwhelmingly positive response from Padres fans, we’ve decided to wear our regular season brown caps with the gold ‘SD’ for the majority of spring training.”

While the Padres are phasing out these controversial spring training caps, they haven’t pulled the hats off the shelves. The problematic design and a St. Paddy’s Day version are both available at the MLB.com team shop.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres will wear these caps at least once during spring training.

But in the meantime, they’ve been wearing these regular-season caps in Arizona:

It’s probably a good idea to just keep it that way.
