San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (7-6) are in the Rose City Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a 3 p.m. ET tip-off against the Portland Trail Blazers (8-5) at the Moda Center. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Trail Blazers NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

San Antonio just split a two-game set at home with the Houston Rockets, losing the first 109-105 Thursday and winning the second 103-91 Saturday. The Spurs shot poorly in both games but won the second contest because they did two things well they generally don’t: Rebound and force turnovers. The Spurs were even in rebound differential (last in opponent’s rebounds per game) and forced 23 Rockets turnovers Saturday.

Portland’s defense kicked in during the second half of a 112-106 win over the Atlanta Hawks Saturday. The Trail Blazers erased a seven-point halftime deficit in part by holding the Hawks to 40 second-half points. SG C.J. McCollum sat out the second half with a sprained foot and is out Monday. While McCollum was out, PG Damian Lillard increased his aggressiveness, shooting eight of his 12 free throws in the second half.

The Trail Blazers covered all three meetings with the Spurs last season (2-1 outright). However, McCollum averaged 26 points on 47% shooting (47.8% from 3) with a 119 offensive rating in those three games vs. San Antonio.

Spurs at Trail Blazers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Spurs 112, Trail Blazers 108

Money line (ML)

These teams are neck and neck in net rating (Portland is 13th and San Antonio 14th), but these rankings factor in McCollum and C Jusuf Nurkic, neither will be playing on MLK Day.

The Spurs historically have done a pretty good job defending Lillard: Dame Time has scored 30-plus points in just seven out of his 25 career games vs. the Spurs. San Antonio PG Dejounte Murray has the best defensive rating on the starting lineup and most defensive win shares on the team.

Plus, you have the added revenge motivation for Spurs PF LaMarcus Aldridge, who was a four-time All-Star during his nine-year stint in Portland. I’m rolling with the SPURS (-120) for 1.25 units.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS ON THE SPREAD.

Over/Under (O/U)

If the total is in the 220s, I lean UNDER 224.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit. These teams have a combined 10-16 O/U record and San Antonio has the ninth-best defensive rating. It’s only a lean though because the Over has cashed in eight of the previous nine Spurs-Trail Blazers games.

Previewing Tuesday’s San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (5-5) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (5-4) hook up Tuesday for a 8 p.m. ET tip at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Thunder NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Spurs at Thunder: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Thunder 113, Spurs 107

Money line (ML)

The THUNDER (+115) is a good play at home, as they look to carry over momentum after winning three straight on the road, and four of five games on their recently concluded trip. All four of OKC’s wins on the road trip were as an underdog as three or more points. Look for the Thunder to cash as short ‘dogs at home.

Against the spread (ATS)

The THUNDER +2.5 (-110) are good plays catching a bucket and a hook, as they are 4-1 ATS in the previous five as an underdog. OKC has also dominated this series, as the Spurs -2.5 (-110) are just 6-17 ATS in the past 23 trips to Oklahoma’s capital. The Spurs are also a dismal 0-6 ATS in the previous six as a road favorite, so all signs point to a OKC home win and cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 216.5 (-105) is the way to go. The Spurs were able to cobble together just 88 points in its eight-point loss at Minnesota Sunday in the second end of a back-to-back, and the Under is 5-3 across its past eight outings. OKC hit the Over in Brooklyn, which is a common theme against the Nets. However, the Under is still 4-2 across the past six for the Thunder. The Under is also 13-6-1 in the previous 20 meetings in Oklahoma City.

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (5-4) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2-7) square off in the second half of a back-to-back Sunday at Target Center. Game 2 tips off at 8 p.m. ET following the Spurs’ 125-122 overtime win Saturday. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Timberwolves NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Spurs trailed by 2 points heading into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s contest but pulled even and then outscored the T-Wolves 12-9 in the extra session for their third straight win. Minnesota lost a seventh straight game.

The Timberwolves shot better from field-goal and 3-point range and won the rebounding battle. It was Minnesota’s 16 turnovers and San Antonio’s 24 points off of those turnovers that was the biggest difference. The Spurs had 8 steals as a team to just one for the ‘Wolves.

Spurs at Timberwolves: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Spurs 120, Timberwolves 111

Money line (ML)

The SPURS (-160) are favored once again against the mightily struggling Timberwolves. It was Minnesota that exceeded expectations while forcing overtime Saturday, as the T-Wolves hit on 15 of 30 3-point attempts but average just 33.7% from distance as a team for the season. The Spurs’ 13-for-32 performance Saturday was much more in line with their 40.5% season average.

Minnesota had the edge in rebounding, points in the paint and second-chance points Saturday, but San Antonio dominated in fast-break points and points off turnovers. The Spurs commit the fewest turnovers per game in the NBA and their ball control is the consistent advantage we can bank on for the second half of the back-to-back.

Against the spread (ATS)

Minnesota covered this same spread Saturday but improved to just 4-5 ATS for the season. San Antonio is 6-3 ATS. Saturday was the Spurs’ first time being favored.

Back the SPURS -3.5 (-110) to win by at least 4 points and even the season series. The expected dropoff in the Timberwolves’ 3-point shooting will widen the gap.

Over/Under (O/U)

Seven of the last eight Spurs-Timberwolves matchups played to the Over and Saturday’s 125-122 final score topped the 235.5-point projection by 11.5 points, though it took overtime to get there and that was with a 3-point shooting anomaly from the hosts.

Take the UNDER 233.5 (-110) even with the line dropping 2 points from Saturday’s projection. Both teams have played just one set of back-to-backs so far, but they each hit the Under in the second game, with San Antonio falling 35 points shy of the line in a 98-95 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans (Dec. 27) following a 119-114 win over the Toronto Raptors.

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (4-4) visit the Minnesota Timberwolves (2-6) Saturday at the Target Center for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Timberwolves NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Spurs won two straight on the road—both in the Staples Center—against the Los Angeles Lakers and the Clippers coming into Saturday’s game. In their last game vs. the Lakers, San Antonio moved the ball well and threw 28 assists to just eight turnovers, which helped the Spurs connect on 45.7% of their 3-point attempts.

Minnesota started the season 2-0, but All-Star C Karl-Anthony Towns has been sidelined with a dislocated wrist he suffered during Minnesota’s second game of the season. Since then, the Timberwolves have lost all six games without KAT, five of which by 15 or more points, and have only covered one game.

The Timberwolves won and covered both meetings last season vs. the Spurs. However, those games were all the way back in Nov. 2019, and Minnesota’s two leading scorers in that game were KAT (“questionable” on the injury report) and SF Andrew Wiggins (no longer with the team).

Spurs at Timberwolves: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Timberwolves 123, Spurs 117

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE with a slight lean on Timberwolves (+165) since I am taking Minnesota plus the points. I do think the Timberwolves should be bigger underdogs, but maybe there’s a reason for Minnesota’s cheaper than expected money line.

Against the spread (ATS)

I am not sure what the sharps are seeing, but 76% of the money wagered is on the Timberwolves while 69% of the tickets/bets placed are on the Spurs, according to Pregame.com. Typically the money column is the sharp side, and the bets placed column is the average joe. Maybe some wiseguy with deep pockets has a tip on KAT’s questionable game status.

This market intel is puzzling considering the Spurs are 6-2 ATS this year and have just gotten back-to-back wins over two Western Conference favorites.  But regardless, this line has been bet down from Minnesota getting 7 points on the opener to the current number, and we should follow the money.

BET TIMBERWOLVES (+4.5, +100).

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 234.5 (-110) is my favorite bet in Spurs-Timberwolves. Minnesota is dead last in defensive rating, and San Antonio is ranked 21st in defensive while both teams are top-10 in pace of play. Also, before their last meeting, the Over has cashed in six straight Spurs-Timberwolves games.

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and prediction

The San Antonio Spurs (3-4) travel to meet the Los Angeles Lakers (6-2) Thursday for an 10 p.m. ET tip at the Staples Center. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Lakers NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Spurs at Lakers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lakers 117, Spurs 112

Money line (ML)

The Lakers (-350) are more than likely to win outright at home, assuming A.D. and LeBron will be healthy enough to go. However, it’s not a good long-term strategy to risk three-and-a-half times your potential return.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The SPURS +8.5 (-120) will cost you a little extra juice, but they’re worth it. The Lakers -8.5 (+100) are a banged-up bunch, while San Antonio is pretty healthy. The Spurs won in this building Monday against the Clippers, 116-113, winning outright as 7.5-point underdogs, and they covered last time they faced the Lakers on New Year’s Day as 7.5-point ‘dogs. San Antonio is playing with a lot of confidence right now, covering five of seven overall. Look for another cover here.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 224.5 (-110) is the lean, but play it very, very lightly. San Antonio is coughing up 114.9 points per game, and they’re hitting 3-pointers at a 39.6-percent clip. The Spurs are allowing the opposition to hit triples at a 41.4-percent rate, too. The Lakers rolled up 114.1 PPG, 11th in the league, and they’re shooting 48.9 percent from the floor to rank fourth, and 39.2 percent from behind the arc, fifth in the league. Expect a decent showing on offense.

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (2-4) tangle with the Los Angeles Clippers (5-2) Tuesday at the Staples Center in a 10 p.m. ET game. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Clippers NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

San Antonio is on a four-game losing streak (2-2 ATS) that includes a 130-109 beatdown administered by the Utah Jazz Sunday. The Spurs played some tough competition, though, losing to the winning teams such as the Lakers, Pelicans and aforementioned Jazz.

The Clippers dominated the Suns 112-107 as 3.5-point road favorites in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicates. At one point Los Angeles was up 31 points partially due to the Clippers making 58.6% of their threes.

Los Angeles won last season’s head-to-head series 3-1 but only covered in two of those wins.

Spurs at Clippers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Spurs at Clippers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Clippers 115, Spurs 110

Money line (ML)

Slight lean on Spurs (+350) because I am taking them plus the points, and generally I’d like to sprinkle on an underdog’s money line when betting them to cover. Truth be told, the Clippers should win so feel free to PASS and bet the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

Spurs’ former All-Star SG DeMar DeRozan has held his own against Kawhi Leonard since they were traded for one another in the 2019 offseason and in Kawhi’s first season in Los Angeles. DeRozan actually averages more points per game than Kawhi in their 14 head-to-head meetings, according to LandOfBasketball.com.

Also, BetMGM is just way too thirsty here: According to Pregame.com, more than 90% of the money wagered has been on the Clippers so far yet BetMGM isn’t dropping its price to bet Los Angeles. What that tells me is that the House is very comfortable with where they set the line and are willing to take pro-Clippers action.

The one basketball thing I’ll point to that maybe BetMGM sees as being misconstrued is San Antonio’s 3-point defense vs. Los Angeles’ 3-point shooting. While the Spurs are 29th in opponents’ 3-point percentage, they are fourth in opponents’ 3-point attempts per game, which means they are at least trying to close out on threes.

The Clippers are second in 3-point percentage, which could make this a bad spot for the Spurs, but if San Antonio contests threes and Los Angeles has an off-shooting night, this could be a game San Antonio steals.

GIMME SPURS +9.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

If Los Angeles’ offense is knocking down threes it’s hard to see San Antonio keeping up. Since we took the Spurs plus points, I’ll lean UNDER 227.5 (-105). It’s noteworthy that the market is hitting the Over, though, and I don’t have a strong enough handicap on the total to fade the market. My favorite play in Spurs-Clippers is San Antonio to cover.

Jazz at Spurs: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Spurs 112, Jazz 110

Money line (ML)

The Spurs lost the first two games of their three-game set at home, but both of those were against the Los Angeles Lakers. They have lost three in a row overall after winning their first two games of the year.

Utah has alternated wins and losses and is coming off a 106-100 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. While the Jazz won their last matchup last year, the Spurs have won three of four against them.

Take the SPURS +145.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Spurs have been underdogs in every game they’ve played this season and failed to cover the spread only once. Utah is only 1-3 ATS when favored this season.

Since we expect San Antonio to win straight up, take SPURS +4.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

Four of the Jazz’s five games have gone Under. San Antonio’s last three have gone Under, although all of those were losses. The two teams combine for 219 points per game on average. Four of the last five games between the two teams played to the Over. All of the Spurs’ wins have gone Over.

Take the OVER 220.5 (-115).

Spurs at Pelicans: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pelicans 122, Spurs 111

Money line (ML)

The Pelicans (-200) are just a little too steep for my liking, as I generally set a limit at -180 and stick with it on money lines. Plus, it’s a risky play with the Spurs (+165) rolling in with two wins in their first two games.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PELICANS -4.5 (-115) are even money at home, and for good reason. They split a pair of road games to open, winning in Toronto on Dec. 23, 113-99, and they fell in Miami by a 111-98 score on Christmas Day. The Spurs +4.5 (-105) might be the perfect opponent for a home opener, as San Antonio is just 8-21 ATS in its last 29 trips to the Crescent City.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 228.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play despite the fact the Under has hit in the first two games for NOLA. The Over has cashed in both games for San Antonio, and the Over is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in the Big Easy between these two sides. Look for a higher-scoring game on Sunday.

Raptors at Spurs: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Spurs 117, Raptors 113

Money line (ML)

The Raptors got out to a first-half lead in their last game before getting dismantled by the New Orleans Pelicans 113-99 as 3.5-point favorites in their temporary Tampa Bay digs. Toronto was outrebounded 45-35 and the Pelicans outshot the Raptors from deep 45.2% to 30.4%, sinking five more 3’s.

The Spurs notched an impressive 131-119 road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies as 2-point underdogs Wednesday. Former Raptors PF DeMar DeRozan was outstanding vs. the Grizzlies. He scored 28 points on 7-for-14 shooting, was 14 of 15 from the charity stripe, and added 9 rebounds and 9 assists.

The two teams split last season’s two head-to-head meetings with the road team winning and covering. In fact, prior to Toronto’s 110-106 victory and ATS win over San Antonio last season, the Spurs covered seven straight meetings with the Raptors.

Revenge-game angles are considered square by certain betting communities, but I contend that they make the biggest difference in NBA regular-season games. DeRozan played nine seasons in Toronto, and you know he wants to show up his previous team and have bragging rights over former teammate PG Kyle Lowry. Additionally, it’s tough handicapping teams’ motivation in the regular season, and I love backing teams whose best player I can count on giving a full effort.

GIMME SPURS (+110) for only a half-unit because I’m going to take them plus the points.

Against the spread (ATS)

Just to be safe, I’ll TAKE SPURS +2.5 (-115) for a unit as insurance for the money line wager. Not only did San Antonio cover seven straight vs. Toronto prior to the last meeting, but the Spurs had a winning ATS record last season as an underdog even though it was the first season they missed the postseason in coach Gregg Popovich’s career.

Over/Under (O/U)

Let’s follow the money and TAKE OVER 228.5 (-110). According to Pregame.com, 93% of the money is on the Over, which has pushed Raptors-Spurs from a 225-opening point total to the current price.

The Raptors will have a bounce-back performance offensively against a Spurs team that was uncharacteristically bad in 2019-20. San Antonio was 25th in opponent’s points per game and defensive efficiency last season.

Also, the Spurs offense started to fill it up last season when it played in the bubble—scoring at least 122 points in five of its final eight games—and looked good in the first game this season.

Spurs at Grizzlies: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Grizzlies 118, Spurs 115

Money line (ML)

The Grizzlies are coming off a 34-39 season which came up just short in a playoff bid in the August bubble upon the restart. Injuries took a toll as the Grizz finished the season 2-7 after returning to play.

While Jackson will remain out to start 2020-21, Rookie of the Year PG Ja Morant will lead the way to a GRIZZLIES (-145) victory over a Spurs team that went 32-39 a year ago. SG DeMar DeRozan and PF LaMarcus Aldridge lead the way for Gregg Popovich’s bunch, but the absence of White to begin the season will be felt against a deep and well-rounded Memphis side.

Memphis is a +15000 long shot to win the 2020-21 NBA championship, according to BetMGM, while San Antonio is +25000. These NBA futures odds give us a good read on early-season handicaps. Side with the house and bet the Grizzlies.

Against the spread (ATS)

MEMPHIS -2.5 (-110) offers a little better value to win by at least 3 points Wednesday and should be backed at a very manageable number. The Grizzlies’ head-to-head victories last season came by 4 and 13 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Bet the OVER 231.5 (-110) lightly. Both teams allowed over 113 points per game last season with a negative 1.1 point differential. Two of last season’s four meetings played to a total of more than 250 points.
