Eagles vs. Commanders: 5 matchups to watch on defense

Here are five matchups to watch for the Philadelphia Eagles when they’re on defense against the Washington Commanders’ offense in Week 10

The Eagles (8-0) and Commanders (4-5) are set for a much-hated Monday night renewal of one of the NFL’s most intense rivalries.

On offense, Washington offers an exciting mix of talented pass catchers and dual-threat running backs that can test a defense will some holes up front without Jordan Davis in the lineup.

The Commanders will attempt to solve the Darius Slay-James Bradberry connection while using an underused running game to keep Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offense off the field.

With Monday night fast approaching, here are five matchups to watch.

Eagles-Commanders: Avonte Maddox, Josh Jobe ruled out for Monday night

The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out cornerbacks Avonte Maddox and Josh Jobe for the Monday night clash against the Washington Commanders

The Eagles will be without two cornerbacks on Monday night as the team ruled out Avonte Maddox and Josh Jobe for the Week 10 contest against the Commanders.

Cornerback Josiah Scott logged a full practice (ankle), and he’ll get the start in the slot for Maddox.

Commanders planning to stick with Cornelius Lucas at right tackle this week

The Commanders are sticking with Cornelius Lucas at right tackle this week, which is the correct move.

The Washington Commanders will stick with veteran Cornelius Lucas at right tackle for the Week 8 game against the Indianapolis Colts, head coach Ron Rivera said on Friday.

Lucas, Washington’s valuable swing tackle over the past three seasons, has started the last three games at right tackle, and Washington’s offensive line has been much better overall. Starter Sam Cosmi had thumb surgery after Week 4 and has not played the last three weeks. He was active last week but is sporting a massive club on his hand.

“Yeah, I mean, he’s coming along,” Rivera said of Cosmi. “Honestly, we’re gonna stick with [Cornelius] Lucas. Mostly because the hand’s clubbed completely, and right now, he’s still kind of feeling his way through it. Hopefully, next week, he’ll have a little bit better. The club won’t be a full club, and he’ll have a little more use of the hand. So, we’re kind of hoping for that, and we’ll go through it. If something crazy were to happen, we can play him as an emergency guy.”

It may be time for Washington to experiment with Cosmi at right guard. This week, right guard Saahdiq Charles missed practice with an illness and lost weight. He is questionable for the game. Charles hasn’t been bad at right guard but hasn’t solidified the position. It sounds like he may miss the game, leading Trai Turner to return to the starting lineup. Turner was bad early this season.

As for Lucas, each time he enters the lineup, he excels. Lucas has been good in pass protection, but he has been dominant as a run blocker this year.

With that type of production, Washington can’t put Lucas back on the bench. Cosmi is also a terrific run blocker but sometimes struggles in pass protection. Once he’s fully healthy, don’t be surprised if the Commanders give him a chance at guard.

As for now, Washington’s offensive line is playing better than it has all season, and Lucas is significant reason for that current success.

Commanders Week 6 inactives vs. Bears

Thomas, Dotson, Jackson and Cosmi headline Washington’s Week 6 inactives.

The Washington Commanders announced their inactive list ahead of their Thursday night game against the Chicago Bears, featuring multiple injured starters.

Here’s a look at the inactive players:

  • WR Jahan Dotson
  • TE Logan Thomas
  • RT Sam Cosmi
  • CB William Jackson III
  • RB Jonathan Williams
  • S Percy Butler
  • QB Sam Howell

Dotson, Thomas and Cosmi each missed last week’s game against the Titans with injuries, while Jackson was benched in the first half. Jackson claimed he left the game due to a back injury. Earlier on Thursday, the NFL Network reported Jackson would like to be traded.

With Dotson sidelined, second-year wideout Dyami Brown will continue to receive a prominent role in the offense. Brown caught two passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s loss to the Titans — the first two of his NFL career.

Rookie tight ends Cole Turner and Armani Rogers should receive opportunities in the passing game, along with John Bates. Bates will start but expect the Commanders to go with multiple tight ends at times.

Commanders final injury report for Week 6: Dotson, Thomas among those ruled out

Washington has ruled out six players for Thursday’s game against the Bears.

The Washington Commanders released their final injury report of the abbreviated week Wednesday, and six players have been ruled out for Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Tight end Logan Thomas and wide receiver Jahan Dotson were among those ruled out for the Commanders. Washington’s offense has struggled over the past several weeks, so Thursday presents another opportunity for younger players such as wide receiver Dyami Brown and rookie tight end Cole Turner.

Here’s the full injury report for both teams.

Titans vs. Commanders final injury report, Week 5

The Commanders will be without rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson and right tackle Sam Cosmi.

The Washington Commanders released their final injury report of the Week 5 battle against the Tennessee Titans, and it featured some bad news.

Rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson [hamstring] and right tackle Sam Cosmi [finger] were ruled out with injuries. Safety Percy Butler [quad] and linebacker Milo Eifler [hamstring] were also ruled out.

More potentially bad news for the Commanders was tight end Logan Thomas’ late addition to the injury report. Thomas didn’t participate in Friday’s practice due to a calf injury and is listed as questionable.

Dotson leads the Commanders with four touchdowns. His absence could open the door for Dyami Brown to receive more playing time. Veteran Cornelius Lucas will replace Cosmi at right tackle.

Reserve linebacker and special-teams ace David Mayo [hamsting] is also questionable.

The Titans will also be without several players, including their first-round rookie wide receiver, Treylon Burks. Here are the Titans who will miss Sunday’s game.

  • WR Treylon Burks [toe]
  • LB Ola Adeniyi [neck]
  • LB Zach Cunningham [elbow]
  • OLB Bud Dupree [hip]
  • LB Joe Jones [knee]
  • S Amani Hooker [concussion]

The Titans also listed three players as questionable, including cornerback Caleb Farley, guard Nate Davis and defensive back Lonnie Johnson.

Titans vs. Commanders Week 5 injury report: Thursday

Five players missed practice for the Commanders, while the Titans had seven who missed practice.

The Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans released their second injury report of the week Thursday, and things remained unchanged for Washington.

Safety Percy Butler [quad], right tackle Sam Cosmi [finger], wide receiver Jahan Dotson [hamstring], linebacker Milo Eifler [hamstring] and wide receiver Curtis Samuel [illness] all missed practice for the second consecutive day.

Head coach Ron Rivera spoke on Cosmi’s injury.

“No. No feel for the timeline,” Cosmi said. “He did have surgery. It was done the other day. It was successful, and we’ll see after he gets a chance to see the doctors. It’s really gonna be about wound management as far as that’s concerned, and then we’ll go from there.”

Reliable veteran Cornelius Lucas will fill in for Cosmi at right tackle.

Left tackle Charles Leno [shoulder] and linebacker David Mayo [hamstring] were limited. Rivera said Wednesday he wasn’t worried about Leno.

The Titans had seven players miss practice Thursday, with two new additions in safety Amani Hooker [concussion] and fullback Tory Carter.

Titans vs. Commanders Week 5 injury report: Wednesday

Both teams had five players miss practice Wednesday.

The Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans released their first injury reports of the week Wednesday ahead of their Week 5 matchup on Sunday.

Five players missed practice for the Commanders; among them were starting wide receivers Jahan Dotson [hamstring] and Curtis Samuel [illness] and right tackle Sam Cosmi [finger.] Dotson was injured Sunday, and head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that he could miss “one or two” weeks.

Cosmi injured his hand Sunday, and it could keep him out of multiple games. Washington’s offensive line has struggled and losing Cosmi is the latest blow.

Samuel should be fine.

Rookie safety Percy Butler [quad] and linebacker Milo Eifler [hamstring] also missed practice for the Commanders.

Left tackle Charles Leno [shoulder] was limited, but as Rivera said last week, they are taking it easy with the veteran, lightening his practice reps.

Linebacker David Mayo [hamstring] was also limited.

The Titans also have five players not participating Wednesday, including rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks and linebacker Bud Dupree.

Sam Cosmi is the Commanders’ latest injured offensive lineman

This is another difficult blow for Washington’s offensive line.

The Washington Commanders can’t seem to catch a break on the offensive line. Through four weeks, Washington’s offensive line has struggled to protect quarterback Carson Wentz and is also battling injury woes.

Center Chase Roullier was lost for the season at the end of a Week 2 loss, while guard/center Wes Schweitzer was placed on injured reserve over the weekend with a concussion. There is also right guard Trai Turner, who has battled a quad injury since training camp and was benched Sunday.

Now, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic, right tackle Sam Cosmi injured his hand in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys and could miss some time. This comes on the same day as head coach Ron Rivera saying wide receiver Jahan Dotson could miss a “week or two.”

As good as Dotson is, the Commanders should be fine for a couple of weeks without him. After all, they have Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Cam Sims, but losing Cosmi is the latest blow to a beleaguered offensive line.

The good news here is Cornelius Lucas was re-signed in the offseason. You could argue Lucas is one of the NFL’s best reserve offensive tackles. Lucas should improve Washington’s pass blocking, but he isn’t the run blocker that Cosmi is. And with rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. poised to return soon, the Commanders were likely going to commit more to the run.

In only his second NFL season, Cosmi has battled numerous injuries. He was sidelined twice last season with hip and ankle ailments. And in Week 3, he left the game twice but was fine.

Washington hosts the Tennessee Titans Sunday.

5 Commanders to watch in Week 4 vs. Cowboys

These five Washington Commanders need a big game in Week 4 vs. Cowboys.

The Washington Commanders need a win in Week 4 over the Dallas Cowboys to avoid falling to 1-3 on the season. Another loss would already have fans dreaming of the 2023 NFL draft.

There are no must-win games in Week 4. However, this is close to a must-win game as any you’ll find on the first Sunday in October. Washington’s offense, which had mostly been a bright spot in the first two weeks, went into halftime down 24-0 to the Eagles. This was one week after the Commanders trailed Detroit, 22-0 at halftime. The biggest difference between the two games is Washington’s offense finally woke up in the second half of Week 2. That didn’t happen last week.

For the Commanders to win, specific players need big games. Here are five Washington players to watch in Week 4 against the Cowboys.
