Wednesday injury report for Washington vs. Eagles, Week 17

The first injury report of the week is out for Washington vs. Eagles.

The Washington Football Team returned to the practice fields of Ashburn on Wednesday for the first time since Sunday’s 56-14 blowout loss to the Cowboys. That game is squarely in the rearview mirror was Washington is now fully focused on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.

The week’s first injury report is out for the NFC East rematch and featured more Eagles missing practice than Washington players. Granted, Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce didn’t practice for the Eagles as it was a rest day for each veteran.

As for Washington, three players missed practice Wednesday: Cornerback William Jackson III, right tackle Sam Cosmi and defensive end Montez Sweat. Jackson remains sidelined with a calf injury, while Cosmi missed practice due to illness. Sweat was excused from practice for family reasons after dealing with the loss of his brother.

Offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles, running back Antonio Gibson, wide receiver Curtis Samuel and defensive end James Smith-Williams were limited for Washington. Gibson usually always plays, while Samuel is the opposite.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke was on the injury report with a knee injury but participated fully.

The biggest injury news for the Eagles surrounds running back Miles Sanders. Sanders injured his hand in Week 16, and his status for Sunday is yet to be determined. Sanders paced Philadelphia’s ground game in the Week 15 win over Washington, so his absence could be a big one for the Eagles.

Two of Philadelphia’s other running backs were also on the injury report. Jordan Howard didn’t practice with a stinger, while Kenneth Gainwell was limited with an ankle injury.

Washington rookie quartet graded out well in ugly loss to Cowboys in Week 16

It was a miserable night for Washington, but four rookies did stand out in a good way.

There wasn’t much good that came out of Washington’s 56-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. The offense was bad; the defense was dreadful. Even the usually reliable special teams allowed a touchdown.

But as with anything else, you can find some good if you dig deeply enough.

On Sunday, the good for Washington came in the form of some of their rookies on offense. Washington selected tackle Sam Cosmi, wide receiver Dyami Brown and tight end John Bates in rounds two through four in the 2021 NFL draft. For the most part, Washington has yet to receive early returns on its investments.

Cosmi has played well this season but has missed about half the games. Brown has failed to make an impact, while Bates has shown promise recently with increased playing time.

On Sunday, all three stood out.

According to Pro Football Focus, four of Washington’s highest-graded players from Sunday’s loss were rookies. Brown led all WFT players with an 86.6 grade. He caught two passes for 53 yards, including a big play where he beat Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs for a 48-yard reception. The catch set up Washington’s first touchdown.

Brown only played 13 snaps, but he made the most of them. Fellow rookie receiver Dax Milne caught one pass for 14 yards on seven snaps. He finished with an 82.7 grade.

Cosmi played every offensive snap and earned a 76.1 grade. Cosmi was impactful as a run blocker, earning an 85.2 grade.

Bates, who played 45 snaps, caught two passes for 45 yards, including his first career touchdown. He also had a 32-yard catch-and-run that was particularly impressive. He finished the game with a 71.9 grade.

Surprisingly, second-year guard Saahdiq Charles earned a 74.9 grade in place of Brandon Scherff.

So, on what was a miserable night on all fronts, there was some good. About that defense, well, we won’t go there.

3 matchups to watch in Washington vs. Cowboys Week 16 rematch

Three key matchups to watch in Washington vs. Cowboys rematch.

The Washington Football Team is back on the road Sunday for another NFC East battle with the Dallas Cowboys. To say it’s been a strange December for Washington would be an understatement.

Sunday’s game in Dallas will be Washington’s second vs. Cowboys in 14 days — five days after playing a road game in Philadelphia on a Tuesday night. Washington’s roster has been ravaged with injuries and COVID-19 since just before its last meeting with Dallas on Dec. 12.

Washington enters Week 16 with more bad news on the injury front, as cornerback William Jackson III and safety Landon Collins are out. Facing the Cowboys wide receivers without your top corner spells trouble. Then, you have Collins, arguably Washington’s second-best defender the last 10 weeks.

Here are three critical matchups that will determine the outcome of this NFC East rematch.

Final injury report for Washington vs. Seahawks, Week 12

Two Washington players are out for Monday night.

The final injury report for Week 12 was released on Saturday, and Washington listed two players as out. The Seattle Seahawks had five players listed as out for Monday Night Football.

Washington will be without offensive tackle Sam Cosmi and center Tyler Larsen. Cosmi returned in Week 11 after missing four games with an ankle injury and departed with a hip injury. Larsen was starting his second game in place of center Chase Roullier and was playing well in relief at the time of his injury.

Cornelius Lucas is back in the starting lineup at right tackle, while Wes Schweitzer will start his fifth game of the season — his first at center.

Tight end Ricky Seals-Jones is doubtful. Washington could have starting tight end Logan Thomas back on Monday night. Thomas would still need to be activated and would probably be somewhat limited, but there is a chance he plays. Rookie John Bates will otherwise start for the WFT.

Wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries are questionable, although the chances of Samuel playing appear to be good.

All other players listed on this week’s injury report will play for Washington.

The Seahawks listed five players as out: CB Tre Brown, RB Travis Homer,  OT Jamarco Jones, G Damien Lewis and RB Rashad Penny.

Final injury report for Washington vs. Panthers, Week 11

The final injury report for Week 11 is in. It features some good news for Washington.

The final injury report for Week 11 is out, and it contains some good news for the Washington Football Team. Washington, which travels to Charlotte to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, has two players ruled out.

The two players ruled out may surprise you because neither is wide receiver Curtis Samuel. For the first time in weeks, Samuel participated in practice on Friday. Sure, he was limited, but it was a positive development for Washington, which has been waiting all season for Samuel’s groin injury to sufficiently heal.

Washington ruled out tight end Ricky Seals-Jones and defensive end Shaka Toney. Seals-Jones is Washington’s starter at tight end with Logan Thomas on injured reserve. That leaves rookie John Bates as the starter at tight end, with fellow first-year TE Sammis Reyes as the top backup.

Toney was added to the injury list on Friday with a concussion. Washington already has depth issues at defensive end with Montez Sweat and Chase Young out. Toney’s fellow rookie DE, William Bradley-King, could be elevated to the active roster on Saturday.

Rookie RT Sam Cosmi was a full participant Friday and finally returns to the starting lineup after missing several weeks with an ankle injury. RG Brandon Scherff is questionable with a knee injury.

WR Terry McLaurin and RB Antonio Gibson will play on Sunday, while cornerbacks Benjamin St-Juste and Kendall Fuller are questionable.

Thursday injury report for Washington vs. Panthers, Week 11

Washington had two players not participate on Thursday. Could the WFT be without its top two tight ends on Sunday?

The Washington Football Team and Carolina Panthers released their second injury report of the week on Thursday. The Panthers had four players listed on the injury report, and all were full participants in practice on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the list was still long for Washington. However, the news was better on Thursday than one day ago as some players returned to practice on a limited basis.

Cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste were limited on Thursday after not participating on Wednesday. St-Juste remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles was limited on Thursday after missing Wednesday with an illness.

Offensive tackle Sam Cosmi remains limited, but it’s a positive sign he was still on the practice field after returning Wednesday.

Guard Brandon Scherff and running back Antonio Gibson remained limited. Both will likely play Sunday, barring a setback Friday.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin was a full participant on Thursday after being limited with a shoulder injury Wednesday.

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel remains out. Tight end Ricky Seals-Jones did not practice for the second consecutive day, meaning Washington could be without its top two tight ends on Sunday. That would mean rookie John Bates gets his first NFL start with Sammis Reyes also receiving plenty of playing time.

It will be interesting to see if Seals-Jones practices on Friday.

Some big names did not practice for the Buccaneers again on Thursday.

The Washington Football Team and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were back on the practice field Thursday in preparation for their Week 10 matchup at FedEx Field.

Wednesday’s initial injury report featured plenty of starters for both teams, and nothing changed too much for either team on Thursday.

  • Brandon Scherff and Sam Cosmi remain limited.
  • Antonio Gibson is also limited, but that’s par for the course this season. He’ll play.
  • Benjamin St-Juste did not practice due to an illness.

Brandon Scherff, Sam Cosmi return to practice for Washington

Washington’s offensive line should get a big boost on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Washington Football Team could get a considerable boost ahead of their Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff and rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi returned to practice on Monday for Washington.

Scherff has missed the previous four games with a knee injury, while Cosmi has been sidelined for three weeks with an ankle injury. Their potential returns come at the perfect time for Washington, which lost stalwart center Chase Roullier for the season in Week 8.

Left guard Ereck Flowers was also at practice on Monday after injuring his leg in Week 8.

Wide receiver Dyami Brown and cornerback William Jackson III were also back on Monday. Tight end Logan Thomas is being monitored for a potential activation from injured reserve. Head coach Ron Rivera should have an update on Thomas by Wednesday.

The bad news for Washington is wide receiver Curtis Samuel remains sidelined. This issue doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Washington needs to place Samuel on IR if he can’t practice this week.

Rivera recently stated he expects Samuel to help Washington in the second half of the season.

Overall, it was a good day for Washington. We’ll continue to monitor Thomas and his situation this week.

How are Chase Roullier and Ereck Flowers after injuries in Washington’s Week 8 loss?

What are the latest updates on Ereck Flowers and Chase Roullier?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

No position group on Washington’s roster has been hit harder with injuries than the offensive line. All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff has missed the last four games with a knee injury, while rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi has missed three games with an ankle injury.

In addition, Cosmi’s replacement, Cornelius Lucas, missed Sunday’s game with an illness.

Fortunately for Washington, dependable center Chase Roullier along with left tackle Charles Leno and left guard Ereck Flowers remained in the lineup for the WFT’s Week 8 game at Denver.

Sadly, it didn’t take long for the injury bug to hit Washington’s offensive line again as Roullier went down in the second quarter and was carted off the field with a leg injury. Roullier has played in 67 games, making 61 starts since being drafted in 2017. He is quietly one of the NFL’s better centers.

Now, it appears his season may be over.

Later in the game, Flowers went down with a leg injury. There was no prognosis on Flowers after the game.

In his Monday press conference, head coach Ron Rivera told the media he didn’t have an update at the time of his presser.

However, later in the day, Ben Standig of The Athletic reported that there appears to be good news surrounding Flowers. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Roullier.

Hopefully, for Roullier, there isn’t more damage. However, he is likely done for the season, dealing Washington another tough blow.

Flowers has been outstanding in his return to Washington in 2021. After a breakout season for the WFT in 2019 in his first season at guard, Flowers signed a three-year deal with the Dolphins. He played one season in Miami, before the Dolphins traded him back to Washington just before the 2021 NFL draft.

The bye week is coming at a perfect time for Washington. The hope is Flowers, Scherff, Cosmi and Lucas can all return for the Week 10 game against the Buccaneers. Washington also hopes to get back wide receiver Curtis Samuel and tight end Logan Thomas.
