Sean Payton says Bucs lost 2014 finale on purpose to secure No. 1 pick

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton believes the Bucs landing Jameis Winston with the first overall pick was by design.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints square off in Week 1, all eyes will be on Tom Brady and Drew Brees, two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks that are arguably two of the greatest to ever play the game.

But, let’s not ignore the other quarterback on the sideline, Jameis Winston. The former first overall pick of the Buccaneers signed a one-year deal with the Saints this offseason after Tampa Bay landed Brady, ending Winston’s five-year run with the team.

But, Winston’s career in Tampa Bay may not have happened had the Bucs won their season finale in 2014 to the Saints. The Bucs, who were 2-13 entering that game and vying for the first pick, led 20-7 at halftime. After some questionable substitutions and decisions, like sitting Mike Evans in the second half, Tampa Bay wound up losing 23-20, allowing 16 points in the fourth quarter. The loss locked up the first pick for the Bucs, which they’d use to select Winston.

And if you ask Saints coach Sean Payton, that loss to the Saints was by design, something he talked about Thursday during an interview with 105.7 The Fan when discussing his new quarterback, Winston.

via The Athletic:

“Heck, they lost the game on purpose to us at the end of the season prior with Lovie Smith. They forced Lovie to take his starters out of the game so they could get the one spot to draft Jameis.”

I think most people feel the way Payton does about that loss, but as they say, karma gets everyone in the end. The Bucs had just one winning season with Winston under center and zero trips to the postseason.

Bucs rookie WR Scotty Miller makes huge 48-yard reception against Saints

See the big reception by sixth-round rookie Scott Miller of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in today’s Week 11 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Scotty Miller had yet to make a huge impact in his limited playing time this season.

The sixth-round pick from the 2019 NFL Draft entered Sunday’s Week 11 contest against the New Orleans Saints with just five receptions for 72 yards on the year.

But, in the second quarter today, Miller had a 48-yard reception, the longest of his career, that was originally ruled as a 49-yard touchdown reception — the first of his career — before replays confirmed Miller was contacted before entering the end zone. The Bucs would eventually get a touchdown out of the drive.

Still, it was the highlight-play of the season for the rookie out of Ball State.

Twitter goes insane over O.J. Howard’s crazy turnover against the Saints

Well, you can’t blame this interception on Jameis Winston.

Well, you can’t blame this interception on Jameis Winston.

The much-maligned Buccaneers quarterback who entered today’s game against the New Orleans Saints having thrown 14 interceptions on the year collected his 15th in the first quarter, through no fault of his own, however.

Take a look at this insane play, where Winston hits tight end O.J. Howard who fumbles the ball on his body only to have it intercepted by New Orleans.

New Orleans would score on the very next play with Drew Brees hitting wide receiver Michael Thomas for a 16-yard touchdown that put the Saints up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Suffice it to say, Twitter went crazy over Howard’s careless turnover. Take a look at what they had to say.
