Steelers waive WR Ryan Switzer

The Pittsburgh Steelers waived wide receiver Ryan Switzer as part of their roster cuts.

Per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers waived wide receiver Ryan Switzer on Saturday.

The deadline for teams to cut rosters to 53 was Saturday at 4 p.m. Because Switzer has less than four years of experience, he’s subject to waivers and can be claimed by any team between now and noon Sunday.

If Switzer clears waivers, he becomes an unrestricted free agent, and it’s always possible the Steelers snap him back up. After all, he is Ben Roethlisberger’s best friend. It sounds petty, but that usually accounts for something.

In two seasons with Pittsburgh, Switzer logged just 280 receiving yards and one touchdown. His contributions came mainly via special teams with 1,054 return yards on 77 attempts.

On Friday, head coach Mike Tomlin tabbed wide receiver Diontae Johnson as punt returner.

Don’t look now but WR Ryan Switzer is making plays at Steelers camp

Ryan Switzer is impressing so far at training camp.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans love to have fun on social media at the expense of wide receiver Ryan Switzer. I’ll never get the hate but those fans might have to eat their words. Reports out of training camp are that Switzer and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger are on the same page and Switzer is making plays.

Switzer dealt with injuries, poor quarterback play and a crowded wide receiver group last season. But it appears he’s healthy, has worked himself into the best shape of his career and is taking nothing for granted.

Where does Switzer fit in the Steelers offense? In 2018, the Steelers lined Switzer up primarily in the slot and a few times set him in the backfield as a running back. We’ve seen the team working some slip screens out of the backfield and this could be a place where Switzer gets work in.

But more than that, if he and Roethlisberger build a bond, Switzer could be the guy who operates in the short middle and keep the chains moving when the team throws on short yardage. Either way, based on early reports from camp of Switzer making plays, don’t be shocked if offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner doesn’t find a way to get him more involved in the offense.

Ryan Switzer’s job appears safe with the Steelers

Will Ryan Switzer find his role in the Steelers offense?

[jwplayer lNMqp3Xb-ThvAeFxT]

Last season the entire Pittsburgh Steelers offense took a huge hit when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured. But there might not be a skill player who suffered more than wide receiver Ryan Switzer. The entire situation was compounded by injuries that cut his season short.

But Roethlisberger is back, as is Switzer and the speedy wide receiver is looking to get his spot back. And after hearing head coach Mike Tomlin speak on Wednesday it sounds like Switzer will get his chance.

Tomlin talked about the experience Switzer brings and the time he has to carve out his role. Switzer joined the Steelers in 2018 and had some success. He caught 38 passes, an impressive feat when you consider Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster each caught more than 100 that season.

Switzer was also a part-time running back and return man that season. We aren’t sure what Switzer’s role will be this season but he could find himself getting some sneaky numbers out of the slot with all those weapons around him.

Steelers WR Ryan Switzer with a bold prediction about his 2020 season

Ryan Switzer says he can be on to the best slot receivers in the NFL.

[jwplayer uipp5LSQ-ThvAeFxT]

Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Ryan Switzer caught eight passes. This offseason, the Steelers added a rookie wide receiver in the second round. But let none of that deters the confidence of Switzer. According to Steelers writer Brian Batko, Switzer feels like he can be one of the best slot receivers in the NFL.

One of the advantages of drafting Chase Claypool in the draft was to allow JuJu Smith-Schuster to slide inside and operate more as a slot receiver. I love Switzer as a player and am very glad he’s on the team. But I’m not sure how he is going to make a dent in the boxscore with the amount of talent on the roster.

Switzer joined the team in 2018. He had 36 receptions and played a multitude of roles including running back and as a returner. It isn’t clear what his role will be this season but we will definitely be rooting for him.

The Steelers shower their newest family member with tiny swag

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent an adorable package to welcome the newest member of Steelers Nation.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Ryan Switzer, and his wife welcomed a baby boy, Christian Francis, into the world in May.

Gabie posted a video on her Instagram account Thursday thanking the Steelers for their generous baby gifts.

And, BOY, did the Switzers need it! The couple has been expecting a baby girl since the baby’s “gender reveal” in January.

Steelers James Conner on Ben Roethlisberger: ‘I’m going to play my heart out for him’

As a guest on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Pittsburgh Steelers running back talks about his expectations for the 2020 season.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner has been getting some work in recently with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Ryan Switzer, and he was asked about it Monday as a guest on The Adam Schefter Podcast.

“I’ve been to his place. He’s looking good throwing the ball and he’s stylin’ now, too,” said Conner of Roethlisberger’s much-talked-about haircut and beard trim.

“It’s a Pittsburgh thing,” Conner added. “[Brett] Keisel had the beard. It’s part of Pittsburgh; that’s just how they do it.”

Conner said the experience of not being able to safely gather until recently has, ironically, brought them closer together.

“I think we’ve really grown this offseason as teammates and friends,” he said. “Just being around them is motivating and it’s encouraging.”

Conner has heart — this is a proven fact that the Steelers organization and its fans have known this since before Conner was even drafted. As he does every season, he’ll be giving his all in 2020.

“I can’t wait to go out there with [Ben] — I’m going to play my heart out for him and the rest of our teammates.”

Conner is no stranger to what Roethlisberger has been through since his season-ending elbow injury. The running back has faced his fair share of challenges, whether it was being diagnosed with Hodgkins-Lymphoma in 2015 or the injures he’s endured since making it to the pros.

“I know his work ethic and his mindset; what he’s capable of and what he wants to do. That’s what we all want to do — that’s win it all and just take it one game at a time.”

Conner wants to “win at all costs”. When he’s healthy, he puts it all out there and is a productive RB. In 37 games, Conner has posted 1,581 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. He’s also an asset to the passing game having recorded 748 receiving yards and an additional four scores.

He’s just two seasons removed from a Pro Bowl year and is determined to stay healthy and do everything he can to help the Steelers win games.

“My expectations are to control everything I can control; to just put it together and have a good year. I’m just going to go out there and play football like I know how to do and like I’ve been doing.”

“The staff believes in me, my teammates believe in me, my family believes in me and that’s all I need,” he continued. “Most importantly, I believe in me. I don’t have any expectations as to what my stats are going to be; I’m not concerned with that. I just want to give my quarterback and this organization and the team — people who believed in me and took a chance on me even when I had health concerns and issues. I just want to give them a ring.”

Although the stakes are high in the final year of Conner’s rookie contract, he doesn’t seem fazed. “You have to go out there and perform, whether it’s a contract year, a second-year, a third-year,” Conner said. “I’m not concerned about it being a contract year — I’m going to go out there and perform regardless.”

If Conner does go to another team during free agency in 2021, he knows how difficult that would be for him. “It would be hard to put another helmet on because of everything this city means to me. I’m Pittsburgh through-and-through. We’ll take it one day at a time. I just want to stay in the moment.”

Steelers designate 2 players to return from IR

The Steelers could have two players back in the playoffs.

If the Pittsburgh Steelers should find a way to get into the playoffs, they could have two players back. The team announced on Thursday that fullback Roosevelt Nix and wide receiver Ryan Switzer, who are both on IR, are designated to return and with that could be back if the Steelers advance in the playoffs.

Of the two, Nix is the guy who could have the biggest impact on the team. Unfortunately for Switzer, 2019 hasn’t been much of a year for him. After doing a little of everything for the offense last season, Switzer was phased out almost completely this year and even his return game was struggling.

But Nix is a different story. The run game has been stagnant most of the season because of a multitude of factors. There aren’t many teams who use much of the pure fullback but if having a blocker like Nix in the game can help, I’m all for it.

Steelers send 2 to Injured/Reserve, sign replacements

Pittsburgh loses their starting fullback and primary kick returner.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Thursday, just hours before they take on the Cleveland Browns that they were sending two players from the 53-man roster to the injured/reserve list. One is starting fullback Roosevelt Nix and the other is reserve wide receiver and kick returner Ryan Switzer.

To replace Nix and Switzer, the Steelers have signed wide receiver Tevin Jones and linebacker Jayrone Elliott to replace them. With Nix on IR the Steelers will no longer utilize a true fullback in the run game. Look for Pittsburgh to motion tight end into the backfield at times to allow for a lead blocker but know it won’t be the same.

With Switzer done for the year, the Steelers will have to find someone else to return punts and kicks. It will most likely be wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Switzer was rarely utilized in the passing game this season.
