The New York Giants officially announced the hire of Ryan Cowden on Thursday. He will serve as the executive advisor to the general manager.

Cowden had previously interviewed for the Giants’ GM job before they hired Joe Schoen.

The addition of Cowden was not unexpected. Shortly after the 2023 NFL draft, Giants Wire published a piece outlining six moves the Giants should make prior to training camp. On that list was the hiring of Cowden.

It has long made sense for Schoen to strengthen the front office by hiring Cowden, his good friend who parted ways with the Tennessee Titans in early May. The two first met as scouts for the Carolina Panthers back in 2001.

In addition to the Giants, Cowden had also previously interviewed for the Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers general manager jobs, as well as the full-time role in Tennessee.

Along with the Cowden hire, the Giants also announced that Isaiah Wingfield, who played for Wake Forest University last year, has been added to the personnel department as a scouting assistant.

Former Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel and interim general manager, Ryan Cowden, has reportedly landed a new gig with the New York Giants.

The New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy was the first to report the hiring, but no role was specified. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reports the Giants will name Cowden an executive advisor to the general manager.

The former Titans executive has a connection to Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who he worked with during their days with the Carolina Panthers.

Cowden interviewed for the Giants’ general manager vacancy in 2022, and was also a candidate for jobs with the Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers that year.

Cowden was first hired by the Titans in 2016, serving as the team’s director of player personnel for two seasons before taking his previous role.

He served as interim general manager after Jon Robinson was fired last year, and was among those who interviewed for the team’s vacancy before Tennessee decided to go with Ran Carthon.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen are bolstering their front office with the addition of a familiar name.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that the team is expected to hire Ryan Cowden, who had interviewed for the team’s GM job before it went to Schoen.

Joe Schoen strengthened the Giants’ front office Sunday by adding one of the executives he edged out to become the general manager.

Ryan Cowden, who interviewed for the Giants general manager vacancy in January 2022 before the job went to Schoen, is expected to be hired in an unspecified role, sources told The Post.

Cowden’s official job title will be “executive advisor to the general manager.”

6 moves Giants should make ahead of training camp

With the 2023 NFL draft in the rear-view mirror, here are six things the New York Giants should address prior to the start of training camp.

The New York Giants have waded through the waters of free agency and the 2023 NFL draft, and recently concluded their two-day rookie minicamp. Up ahead are organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.

Those are the only things separating them from the start of training camp and the preseason, which eventually gives way to the regular season.

But their work isn’t quite done yet. There are still a few things general manager Joe Schoen must address and a few other things he’d like to do.

Here’s a look at six moves the Giants should (and could) make before the start of training camp in July.

Titans, Ryan Cowden part ways among 5 staff changes

The Titans and Ryan Cowden have apparently parted ways.

The Tennessee Titans and vice president of player personnel, Ryan Cowden, have apparently parted ways, as Cowden is no longer listed on the team’s official website.

Cowden first came aboard in 2016 and served as director of player personnel for two seasons before taking his most recent role. He also served as interim general manager after Jon Robinson was canned.

Cowden was among several candidates for the team’s vacant general manager position earlier this offseason, but the Titans ultimately decided to go out-of-house and hire Ran Carthon. After that, Cowden’s departure was pretty much inevitable.

Parting with Cowden wasn’t the only change revealed for Tennessee on Thursday.

Per Neil Stratton of Inside the League, Max Curtis was named the new player personnel coordinator, Bryce Wasserman the new director of team strategy and John Streicher becomes the director of football administration.

In addition to those moves, the Titans also reportedly hired former Atlanta Falcons college scouting director Anthony Robinson as assistant general manager, giving Tennessee a second along with Chad Brinker.

3 Titans GM candidates set for second interviews

Three of the seven candidates the Titans interviewed for their GM job are getting a second interview.

Barring another entrant into the mix, it appears the Tennessee Titans have three finalists for their vacant general manager job after completing a total of seven interviews since last week.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Titans are set to bring back their vice president of player personnel, Ryan Cowden, San Francisco 49ers director of pro personnel, Ran Carthon, and Chicago Bears assistant general manager, Ian Cunningham, for second interviews.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones adds that the Titans could have more candidates in the days ahead, but the thought is that the team will have its new general manager hired by the end of the week.

The Titans completed six interviews last week and one more on Tuesday with Buffalo Bills director of pro personnel Malik Boyd, according to MMQB’s Albert Breer.

In his report, Breer noted that head coach Mike Vrabel would be involved in the second round of interviews with candidates and that he would “have a voice.”

The vast majority of the fan base would like the Titans to go outside the team to find its next general manager. With Cowden still in the running, there’s a chance they don’t do that.

Titans interviewing Ryan Cowden, Monti Ossenfort on Thursday

The Titans are taking a look at two of their own on Thursday for their vacant general manager job.

The Tennessee Titans are interested in plenty of candidates for their general manager position from outside of the organization, but the team will be taking a look at two of its own on Thursday.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans are interviewing interim GM and vice president of player personnel, Ryan Cowden, and director of player personnel, Monti Ossenfort, for their open GM role Thursday.

Here’s more on Cowden and Ossenfort, per the Titans’ official website.

Ossenfort:

Monti Ossenfort is in his 21st season in the NFL and his third as the Titans’ director of player personnel in 2022. Ossenfort joined the Titans after 15 seasons with the New England Patriots, where he served as the club’s director of college scouting (2014-19), assistant director of college scouting (2011-13), national scout (2008-2010), area scout (2006-07), and personnel assistant (2003). He won four Super Bowls while with the Patriots. Ossenfort spent three seasons with the Houston Texans as a college scout (2005), pro and college scouting assistant (2004), and as a pro personnel intern (2002). His first NFL experience came as a training camp intern for the Minnesota Vikings in 2001.

Cowden:

Ryan Cowden is in his 23rd NFL season and his seventh with the Titans. In 2018, he was promoted to Vice President of Player Personnel. He originally joined the franchise in 2016, as the Director of Player Personnel.

Cowden oversees all areas of the scouting department, both college and pro, including advance scouting, free agency preparation, and evaluation of players in the NFL and all other professional leagues. In addition, he assists with college scouting and preparation for the NFL Draft.

The Titans’ first reported interview with an outside candidate will come on Saturday, with the team expected to talk to Chicago Bears assistant general manager, Ian Cunningham. Read more on that here.

Titans’ Ryan Cowden to get 2nd interview for Steelers’ GM job

Cowden also interviewed for the Giants’ GM vacancy earlier this offseason.

Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden is reportedly set for a second interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers for their general manager vacancy.

The news comes from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero. Also getting a second interview with Pittsburgh is Tampa Bay Buccaneers vice president of player personnel, John Spytek.

Pittsburgh is looking to replace long-time general manager and vice president Kevin Colbert, who retired following the 2022 NFL draft. Colbert was the Steelers’ general manager since 2010.

Cowden, who originally joined the Titans as director of player personnel before being promoted to vice president of player personnel in 2018, has been busy this offseason.

Not only will he get two interviews for the Steelers’ job, he also got a look from the New York Giants before they ultimately hired former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager, Joe Schoen.

In 2021, Cowden was a candidate for the Washington Commanders’ general manager job before it went to Martin Mayhew.

A second interview indicates that Cowden is close to getting the job, which means the Titans might have a front office position to fill in the near future.

Titans’ Ryan Cowden among 3 to interview for Steelers GM job

This is the second team Cowden has interviewed with for a general manager job.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Friday that they have interviewed three candidates for their general manager position, and one of those candidates included Tennessee Titans executive, Ryan Cowden.

Cowden, who serves as the Titans’ vice president of player personnel, was one of three to get a look from the Steelers, along with Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager, Ed Dodds, and Los Angeles Chargers director of player personnel, JoJo Wooden.

Pittsburgh is in the process of hiring a new general manager after Kevin Colbert decided to step down after the 2021 campaign.

For Cowden, this is the second team he has interviewed with this offseason, as he also was considered for the New York Giants general manager job before it went to Joe Shoen.

Titans executives have been busy with general manager interviews this offseason.

Director of player personnel, Monti Ossenfort, received three interviews for GM jobs, one with the Giants, one with the Minnesota Vikings, and one with the Chicago Bears.

Giants wrap up first round of general manager interviews

The New York Giants wrapped up the first leg of their general manager search having interviewed nine total candidates.

The New York Giants wrapped up their first round of interviews in their search for a new general manager this week.

The new GM will face the daunting task of rebuilding one of the league’s worst rosters with very little salary cap space to operate with.

Other challenges will include revamping the conditioning, training and medical departments as the team has been one of the most injured in the NFL the past decade.

Plus, he has to hire a new head coach and coaching staff, evaluate the scouting and personnel departments and make some really tough roster decisions.

Piece of cake, right?

Here is a quick list of the nine men they interviewed.
