Bills’ Jordan Phillips, Ryan Bates out vs. Dolphins

#Bills’ Jordan Phillips, Ryan Bates out vs. #Dolphins:

The Buffalo Bills will be without two players in the trenches against the Miami Dolphins in Week 15.

On Thursday during his weekly interview with the team’s radio partner, WGR-550, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott ruled defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and Ryan Bates out for the game.

Phillips is dealing with a shoulder injury. He previously said he was “fine” after he first sustained it, but Phillips is now set to miss his second-straight game.

Bates was injured just last week against the New York Jets. The Bills (10-3) scored on a rush from quarterback Josh Allen and Bates went down on the play due to an ankle injury.

Despite missing the matchup with the Dolphins (8-5), reports indicated earlier this week that Bates does not have a long-term injury.

Bates was replace by Greg Van Roten. The defensive line rotation filled in for Phillips.

On the positive injury front, linebacker Matt Milano (knee) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (pectoral) will practice on Thursday. McDermott did not yet rule them out.

The team will announce full injury designations on Thursday afternoon. Bills Wire will provide that information once it’s made available.

Report: Bills’ Ryan Bates not expected to have long-term injury

Injury update on #Bills OL Ryan Bates:

The Buffalo Bills could have escaped their win against the New York Jets with a clean bill of health.

In the 20-12 win, the Bills (10-3) only lost one player due to injury: Ryan Bates.

Buffalo’s starting offensive lineman left the contest due to an ankle injury which occurred when quarterback Josh Allen scored a rushing touchdown.

Greg Van Roten went on to replace Bates for the remainder of the day. However, Bates might not miss much time.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Bates sustained a low-ankle sprain. Compared to a high-ankle injury, lower ones are much more manageable and have a shorter healing time in general.

Per the report, Bates’ injury is “not expected to be a long-term issue.”

That’s good news for Buffalo, who will face a talented defensive line against the Miami Dolphins (8-5) in Week 15.

Bates’ status on the injury report during the lead up to Buffalo’s matchup with Miami will be monitored throughout the week. Bills Wire will bring you those updates.

Bills rule Ryan Bates questionable to return with injury

#Bills rule Ryan Bates questionable to return with injury:

The Bills are down an offensive lineman against the Jets in Week 14.

In the second half, the Bills took a 14-7 lead. On the play, right guard Ryan Bates went down.

The team went on to announce that Bates is questionable to return with an ankle injury.

With Bates out, former Jet Greg Van Roten replaced him on the O-line.

Bills’ Ryan Bates said he’s cleared protocol, will play vs. Ravens

#Bills’ Ryan Bates said he’s cleared protocol, will play vs. #Ravens:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Ryan Bates said he’s good to go in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Bates suffered a concussion against the Miami Dolphins during his team’s 21-19 loss last weekend. Throughout this week, Bates has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

In fact, just prior to the start of Friday’s workout, the final one ahead of Buffalo’s next game in Baltimore, head coach Sean McDermott said Bates was still in the protocol.

But as the rules go, Bates had to attempt to practice as the final step to leave the concussion protocol. Evidently, that happened on Friday as McDermott spoke before practice while Bates did after.

Bates’ addition back into the lineup is a welcomed sign for the middle of Buffalo’s offensive line. While Bates will play, the status of center Mitch Morse is up in the air.

On the Bills’ final injury report for the week, Morse was listed as questionable due to an elbow injury.

Having one starting interior lineman on the field is a positive, at least.

Bills-Titans MNF preview: Who must succeed for their team to win

The Bills-Titans Monday Night football game should be amazing. Here are seven under-the-radar players who must succeed for their team to win.

When we last saw the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans face off, it was October 18, 2021 — Week 6 of the season. Tennessee pulled off a thrilling 34-31 comeback win, scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, and pointing running back Derrick Henry at Buffalo’s nickel-heavy (and run-light) defense as if Henry was the biggest possible power tool — which, of course, he was. Henry led the way for the Titans as he had the two seasons before, and as he did until his season was halved by injury. He ran 20 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-decider with 3:05 remining.

While the Bills are well aware of what Henry can do to them when healthy, it might not be the main story as these two teams get ready for their Monday Night Football matchup (7:15 EST, Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium, ESPN/ESPN2). Henry has not yet looked like the back he was before missing half the 2021 season with a foot injury. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is coming off a season in which he led the league in third-down interceptions with 11. Tennessee’s receiver corps is very much in flux after the A.J. Brown trade, and a defense that used to be one of the NFL’s best has some questions marks in both pressure and coverage.

As for the Bills, everybody’s chic Super Bowl LVII pick lived up to the hype and then some in their 31-10 outright thrashing of the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Buffalo’s defense made Matthew Stafford’s crew look like a bad Division II offense, and Buffalo’s offense caused coverage busts that Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey was eager to discuss after the fact.

So, we could see two very different teams in this battle of AFC titans in the Week 6 rematch. Here are seven under-the-radar players who must step up and succeed if their team is to win.

Bills at Rams: 3 key matchups in Week 1

#Bills at #Rams: 3 key matchups in Week 1:

The Buffalo Bills will face the Los Angeles Rams in their upcoming Week 1 game.

Even with the bright lights on with the contest slated as the NFL’s season opener, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

With that, here are three key matchups to watch between the Bills (0-0) and Rams (0-0):

Every Penn State player on an NFL opening day roster in 2022

Here is every former Penn State plater on an NFL roster to start the new NFL season in 2022.

The start of a new season in the National Football League is here and there will be a good amount of Penn State flavor throughout the league this season. Penn State will have the eighth most players on an NFL opening day roster this season with 34 players appearing on an NFL team’s 53-man roster to start the season (plus two additional players on injured reserve and another on the physically unable to perform list). In all, Penn State claims 44 players are on NFL rosters to start the year with the inclusion of practice squad players.

That includes nine players who were on the Penn State roster in 2021, including wide receiver [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], defensive end [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag], and safety [autotag]Jaquan Brisker[/autotag]. Dotson is one of four Penn State players on the Washington Commanders, the most of any NFL franchise to start the season.

Former kicker [autotag]Robbie Gould[/autotag] continues to be the elder statesman of the Nittany Lions football family in the NFL. Gould, of the San Francisco 49ers, is entering his 19th season in the NFL.

Here is a look at every Penn State player on either an NFL team’s 53-man roster or practice squad at the start of the 2022 season.

At the end of the day, Ryan Bates is very happy to be back with Bills

At the end of the day, Ryan Bates is very happy to be back with #Bills:

The Bills have Ryan Bates. It wasn’t always that simple.

After entering the NFL as a 2019 undrafted rookie and being traded to Buffalo, Bates eventually became a restricted free agent this offseason. Per league rules, Bates was able to, and did, sign an offer sheet with the Chicago Bears.

Those same laws allowed the Bills to match that and Bates is back.

While thankful for the Bears, Bates said he’s glad to be back in Buffalo and admitted being a restricted free agent is a one-of-a-kind thing.

“The process was different,” Bates said. “At the end of the day, very happy to still be in Buffalo. Those guys–These are my guys, I didn’t want to leave them.”

Buffalo showed their faith in re-signing Bates. It’s worth noting that comes after not seeing much of him.

Sure, the Bills got plenty of insight on his skills via practice. However, he only has made four starts in his NFL career. All of those came just last season.

Not to mention, the Bills are hoping to have a better offensive line in 2022. Bates will play a big part in that as the projected starter at right guard.

No pressure.

Sean McDermott thinks Bates can handle that, though. The coach referenced the 25-year-old’s steady approach as a reason why the team believed in him.

“He’s always been a pretty consistent person off the field, consistent on the field and I think that really goes to his dependability. I think his teammates see that and his coaches see it as well,” McDermott said via video conference. “It’s really who he is so I haven’t seen much of a change at all.”

For more from Bates on re-signing in Buffalo, see the clip from his training camp interview via WIVB-TV below:

Injury update: Ryan Bates, Tim Settle practicing again at Bills camp

Injury update: Ryan Bates, Tim Settle practicing again at #Bills camp:

The Buffalo Bills have been on the wrong end of injury headlines as their 2022 training camp rolls on. Thankfully, there was finally some good news on Thursday.

After the Bills only held a walk-through practice the day prior, the ninth day of camp saw two players return: Offensive lineman Ryan Bates and defensive tackle Tim Settle.

Bates, a potential starting piece at guard on the Buffalo O-line, re-signed with the team this offseason. He had missed five workouts with an undisclosed issue described as “soreness” by the team.

Settle had been dealing with a groin injury for a few days. He signed in Buffalo this offseason as a free agent and will factor into the team’s defensive line rotation in 2022.

Prior to Thursday, both Bates and Settle had been spotted working off to the side without pads on at training camp. It remains to be seen how much work the two do in their return, as there’s a chance they could still sit out portions of practice.

Bare minimum, the two were taking part in individual drills according to reports from St. John Fisher University. WIVB-TV also posted this video of Bates taking:

Other players still sidelined or limited participants include OL Rodger Saffold (ribs), OL Spencer Brown (limited), OL Greg Mancz (soreness), DT Eli Ankou (calf), CB Tre’Davious White (knee), WR Marquez Stevenson (foot) and OL Ike Boetter (Achilles).

Bills 2022 training camp positional battles: Offensive line depth

#Bills 2022 training camp positional battles: Offensive line depth (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills seem set with their starting five on the offensive line heading toward the 2022 regular season. Head coach Sean McDermott has said that he will roll with the best five.

As of now, that grouping will be: Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown at the tackle spots, Rodger Saffold and Ryan Bates at the guard positions, and Mitch Morse at center.

Buffalo brought in more competition to challenge for the depth spots on the offensive line. McDermott loves flexibility and availability, and the players who ultimately make the final roster will need to demonstrate their ability to step into action without any drop off.

Tommy Doyle played as a sixth lineman periodically last year. The Bills moved on from Daryl Williams in March, so Doyle has a good shot at being the primary backup at tackle.

The Bills have Cody Ford and Ike Boettger on the roster as well. Ford has fallen off, but he has experience at tackle and guard. Boettger has started at guard in the past for Buffalo.

However, Boettger is likely to spend a good chunk of the 2022 season continuing to rehab an Achilles injury he suffered last year.

Buffalo also brought in several veterans to fight for spots. David Quessenberry, Greg Van Roten, and Greg Mancz are among this faction. Their experience gives them an edge moving forward.

Buffalo drafted tackle Luke Tenuta in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Former practice squad lineman Jacob Capra also has an outside chance as making the final squad.

The Bills will keep eight or nine linemen on the final roster. Expect Buffalo to experiment with a wide variety of line combinations over the next few weeks.

The Bills have had no problem shuffling players around based on game situation and injury issues. This is a spot to watch as the Bills finalize their roster.
