NFL free agent profile: Bears DL Roy Robertson-Harris

The Arizona Cardinals have much to consider when free agency starts – a player they could look at is Bears DL Roy Robertson-Harris.

The Arizona Cardinals have needs that should keep them active in free agency this offseason, even though there is not much cap room at the moment.

When the time comes around a month from now, there are several free agents that Arizona could or should look further into.

Who are potential targets?

Let’s start with Roy Robertson-Harris, who has played four seasons for the Chicago Bears.

Robertson-Harris did play a role in the defensive line rotation for a very good Bears defense the past few years. Though not listed on their current depth chart because he ended the season on injured reserve with a should injury, he  played DE, NT and DT spots for them (he is listed as a DE). He would seem to be a good fit, having played in a 3-4 defense as a Bear.

One value that Robertson-Harris would bring is his height. In that sense, he is like former Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell. Campbell is 6-foot-8, while Robertson-Harris is listed at 6-foot-5. He could potentially knock down a few passes.

Robertson-Harris brings energy to the field. In this highlight video, one thing that seems to stand out is how he never gives up on a play:

Robertson-Harris doesn’t have the sparkling sack numbers, having o only seven in four seasons, but Arizona’s front three don’t usually wrap up a lot of sacks. It usually falls on Chandler Jones or other outside linebackers it seems. However, it does appear that the former UTEP defensive lineman does have some pass-rushing juice to bring to the table.

And finally, and maybe most importantly, he could be had for a relatively lower money deal. He’s coming off a season with an injury, so he might be willing to sign a one-year “prove-it” deal that Cardinals general manager Steve Keim loves to hand out.

The last former Bears defensive lineman the Cardinals acquired was Jonathan Bullard in 2019. He had his season limited to injury but had one of his most productive seasons as a pro in the nine games he played.

What are your thoughts on Roy Robertson-Harris as a potential target  for the Cardinals?

Bears place DE Roy Robertson-Harris on injured reserve

The Bears lost a valuable member of their defensive line as DE Roy Robertson-Harris was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The Chicago Bears lost a valuable member of their defensive line when it was reported that defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris was having season-ending shoulder surgery.

The Bears made it official by placing Robertson-Harris on injured reserve on Thursday with the shoulder injury he suffered against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8.

In eight games this season, Robertson-Harris recorded 10 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and five quarterback hits with six starts. Robertson-Harris is slated to be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Earlier this offseason, Robertson-Harris signed a second-round tender and signed a one-year contract worth $3.259 million.

With Robertson-Harris landing on injured reserve, the Bears will be leaning on defensive end Brent Urban and defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr., who have both proven to be valuable members of this Chicago defense.

Bears sign DT Anthony Rush to active roster, QB Kyle Sloter to practice squad

Chicago added depth on the defensive line with the signing of DT Anthony Rush to the active roster.

Following news that defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the Chicago Bears have added depth on the defensive line.

The Bears signed defensive tackle Anthony Rush to the active roster, the team announced Tuesday. Chicago also officially added quarterback Kyle Sloter to the practice squad.

The Bears defensive line took a blow with the loss of Robertson-Harris and John Jenkins being sidelined with an ankle injury. Rush was an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, but he was waived July 27. In nine games with the Eagles and four games with the Seattle Seahawks, Rush notched 14 tackles, including three tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups and 0.5 sacks.

The addition of Sloter comes as insurance should back-up quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who suffered an injury to his right throwing shoulder, not be ready in time for Monday night’s game. Sloter, who had a workout with the Bears last week, has been impressive in preseason, posting an 11-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and averaging a 74% completion percentage and a 119.8 quarterback rating.

Bears DE Roy Robertson-Harris expected to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Chicago Bears defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris may have played his last down in the navy and orange.

Chicago Bears defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris may have played his last down in the navy and orange.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Robertson-Harris is expected to undergo shoulder surgery this Wednesday that will put him out for the rest of the season.

Robertson-Harris had already missed Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans due to the injury suffered the week before against the New Orleans Saints. The hulking 6’5″ defensive end was in his fifth season with the Bears. He signed as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016, but missed the entire year when he was placed on the reserve list.

The veteran out of UTEP totaled seven tackles in eight games for the Bears and is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the season concludes. He was tendered a second-round pick this past spring as a restricted free agent, ultimately signing a one-year deal worth over $3 million.

With Robertson-Harris shelved, the Bears will look to defensive ends Brent Urban and Mario Edwards Jr. to help pick up the slack. Fortunately, both have proven to be valuable pieces on the defensive line this season.

Bears inactives: Which players won’t play vs. Titans in Week 9?

The Chicago Bears released their list of inactives ahead of today’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Chicago has been banged up this week, especially on the offensive line due to injuries and the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Here’s a look at the players that won’t be suiting up for the Bears:

Bears injury report: Cole Kmet questionable, Roy Robertson-Harris out vs. Titans

Chicago has four players that have been ruled out and one questionable against the Titans on Sunday.

The Chicago Bears have been relatively lucky on the injury front through the first half of this season. But it seems like injuries have finally caught up to them.

The Bears released their second injury report of the week ahead of their Week 9 game against the Tennessee Titans, although it’s important to note practice didn’t take place due to the facility being shut down with a COVID-19 scare.

But the Bears did list defensive end Roy-Robertson Harris and tight end Cole Kmet among six players that wouldn’t have practiced.

The Bears released their first injury report of the week ahead of their Week 9 game against the Tennessee Titans, where nine players did not practice. Two of those veteran resting days for defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and linebacker Danny Trevathan. But the rest of the report is pretty grim.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ crowded injury report for Wednesday’s practice.

Bears DE Roy Robertson-Harris questionable to return with shoulder injury

It’s been a brutal injury day for the Bears, and they lost a key member of their DL as Roy Robertson-Harris suffers a shoulder injury.

It’s been a brutal week in regards to injuries for the Chicago Bears, who have seen some key starters get banged up. After losing right tackle Bobby Massie to a knee injury in the first quarter (who’s questionable to return), the Bears lost a key member of their defensive line.

Defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. The Bears said he’s questionable to return.

Chicago has found some key depth on the defensive line in Brent Urban and Mario Edwards Jr., who have been impressive this season. We’ll see if Robertson-Harris is good to go for the second half or if it’ll be Urban and Edwards the rest of the way.

The Bears lead the Saints 13-10 at halftime.

What the loss of NT Eddie Goldman means for the Bears in 2020

The loss of Eddie Goldman is a huge one for this Bears defense. And it’s not going to be easy to make up for his absence.

The Chicago Bears defense will be without one of its best players in 2020 with nose tackle Eddie Goldman opting out of the season due to health and safety concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goldman falls into the high-risk category, as he has dealt with asthma in the past. Goldman, who signed a four-year extension with the Bears in 2018, will receive a $350,000 stipend as he does fall into the high-risk opt-out category.

Goldman opted out because of health concerns related to COVID-19. The 26-year-old defensive tackle has experienced issues with asthma in the past. Because Goldman falls into the high-risk category, he will receive a $350,000 stipend by opting out. Goldman signed a four-year extension with Chicago in 2018 that contained $25 million in guarantees.

ESPN examined the full list of NFL players that chose to opt out of the 2020 season and what that loss means for their respective teams. Obviously the loss of Goldman is a huge one for this Bears defense. And it’s not going to be easy to make up for his absence in the middle of that defensive front.

Goldman is one of Chicago’s best-run stoppers. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound nose tackle will be missed. A former second-round draft choice, Goldman never posted gaudy statistics, but the team considered him a valuable member of Chicago’s top-rated defense. The Bears must now find a new anchor in the middle of their defensive line. Veteran John Jenkins — recently removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list — is a strong contender to replace Goldman at nose tackle.

With Goldman opting out, the free-agent addition of defensive tackle John Jenkins looks better by the day. Jenkins, who is in his second stint with the Bears, has proven to be a solid defensive tackle. Chicago certainly needs him to step up, although there’s no replacing an Eddie Goldman.

The Bears are going to need more than Jenkins to step up this season. There are a slew of players on Chicago’s defensive line that were poised to make an impact this season, especially given the loss of Goldman. Defensive tackle Bilal Nichols and Roy Robertson-Harris are players that Chicago will be turning to take that next step. It certainly helps that defensive tackle Akiem Hicks is returning to the lineup following injury.
