12 former Chiefs players getting another shot in the USFL this spring

A quick look at the former #Chiefs players set to play in the latest season of the USFL:

The USFL is officially back for a second consecutive season.

The upstart league kicked things off in 2022 with a 10-week season and two-week postseason, with the Birmingham Stallions defeating the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 in the USFL championship. Eight teams will return to play in the USFL’s second season in 2023, but this time around they’ve got the XFL (who are just wrapping up their season) to compete with. They’ll have four games set to be played this upcoming weekend, with two on Saturday and two on Sunday.

So exactly how many former Kansas City Chiefs players are on USFL opening day rosters? We’ve identified 12 players who are set to suit up and see action this weekend. There is a former Chiefs player on every USFL team with the exception of the Pittsburgh Maulers. There is even one former second-round draft pick from Brett Veach’s tenure who is set to play in this league.

Here is a look at those players organized by team:

Another year, another spring football league.

This time it’s the reimagining of the USFL, which will play its first game in over 35 years. The upstart league features eight teams with a 10-week regular season and a two-week postseason. Their entire inaugural season is being played in Birmingham, Alabama.

The league features a number of former NFL players and coaches. Two former Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks — Shea Patterson and Jordan Ta’amu — have been named starters for the Michigan Panthers and Tampa Bay Bandits, respectively. There are actually quite a few former Chiefs players who are playing for a number of different teams throughout the league. Former Chiefs HC Todd Haley also happens to be the head coach of the Bandits.

Below you can find out how to take in all the action of the opening weekend of USFL football:

Cowboys release former Notre Dame great

What is your favorite memory of Jaylon Smith at Notre Dame?

Jaylon Smith will go down as one of the all-time “what if’s” in football.

What if the 2015 Butkus Award winner didn’t suffer a devastating knee injury against Ohio State in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl?  Would he have been a top-five pick as many projected him to be?

And just how great of career may Smith have had if it wasn’t for that injury that likely stirred many draft-eligible players to sit out of their bowl games in the years that have followed?

Smith was released Tuesday by the Dallas Cowboys, the same team that drafted him in the second round back in 2016.  According to Jori Esptein, Smith had played 56% of Cowboys defensive snaps this season, the most of any full-time Cowboys linebacker.

In full, Smith played all 56 games for the Cowboys since returning from injury in 2017, recording nine sacks and forcing six fumbles during his time.

Where he winds up remains to be seen but for a player who signed a five-year, $64 million contract extension in 2019 it’s hard to imagine him not getting picked up sooner than later.

And one more “what if” while we’re here.

What if literally anyone other than Brian VanGorder was Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator in 2015?  Just how good could the Irish and Smith both been?

2020 Pro Bowl: How to tune in, and which Saints are playing

New Orleans Saints players like Alvin Kamara and Drew Brees will get to reunite with Mark Ingram at the 2020 Pro Bowl. Here’s how to watch.

[jwplayer zrI1qaV9-ThvAeFxT]

There’s no telling what will happen at the 2020 Pro Bowl. Last year, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara got on the field with the defense, and nearly sacked Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. This year, Kamara is surrounded by teammates, including quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Michael Thomas, and three of the five Saints’ starting offensive linemen (Terron Armstead, Andrus Peat, and Larry Warford). Tight end Jared Cook, kick returner Deonte Harris, kicker Wil Lutz, and defensive end Cameron Jordan round out the pack.

It’s going to be a fun game, which is probably what the Saints are hoping for after another disappointing playoffs loss. The week of festivities, events, and hours spent at Disney World have to be a welcome reprieve for the players and their families.

Back to the Pro Bowl: the Saints will be playing on the NFC Team, led by Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and his staff. The AFC Team is marshaled by Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, with league MVP favorite Lamar Jackson starting at quarterback and a familiar face next to him at running back: Mark Ingram. It won’t take long for Kamara and the Saints to reunite with their former teammate.

Here’s everything you need to know so that you can tune in for the Pro Bowl:
