Kirk Ferentz gives thought on making trip to Rose Bowl

Kirk Ferentz has thoughts on the trip.

With the new-look Big Ten Conference, it provides other teams a chance to make a regular trip to Los Angeles and the Rose Bowl. In Week 11, the Iowa Hawkeyes face the UCLA Bruins in a Friday night showdown in Los Angeles.

Ahead of the game, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz spoke about what it means to play at a historic venue such as the Rose Bowl, per Riley Donald of Hawkeyes Wire.

“Not really. I mean, the venue will be cool. It’s kind of like Wrigley; I’ll explain it to you this way. My wife would be the first one to tell you because she still laughs, I got drenched at the Super Bowl when the Bears and Indy played. We got home at 3:00 because we didn’t have a ride lined up coming out and her response was, ‘Oh, you mean nobody drove you to the game? Nobody gave you a coat when it rained?’ All that kind of stuff. But that’s really kind of our life, and it’s one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done in my life is take my daughters on college visits because I get to see the college, not just the stadium.”

Still, Ferentz admits they are going just to play a game and he doesn’t sound worried about much else.

“We’re going to play a game, a tough game against a tough opponent, and we all know we’ve got our work cut out, and this is going to be a tough challenge for us…Hopefully, somebody can take some pictures and we’ll look at those during the bye week.”

Top photos from Oregon Ducks romp in Pasadena for first Big Ten victory

Some of the best photos from the Oregon Ducks 34-13 win over the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night.

The Oregon Ducks went down to Pasadena and met UCLA in the Rose Bowl for their first Big Ten game because nothing says Big Ten football than the Ducks and Bruins on a Saturday night.

Despite the unusual circumstances these two teams played under, it was the Ducks that looked like a Big Ten powerhouse as they dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and played ground-and-pound football for the second half to come out with a 34-13 victory.

Tez Johnson had 11 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for the Ducks.

Oregon scored on its first five possessions and after taking a 28-10 halftime lead, the Ducks were conservative offensively for the final 30 minutes as they knew UCLA couldn’t rally with that meager offense. Jordan James wound up with 103 yards, mostly in the second half and the Ducks got out of dodge with the conference win.

Here are the best photos on what was a successful night in Pasadena.

Photos of UCLA’s ugly Big Ten opener loss to Indiana

It was a tough loss but still a gorgeous venue.

It was not pretty. The UCLA Bruins football program began their Big Ten Conference run with an ugly 42-13 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers.

UCLA scored just one touchdown, which came in the second quarter, and the Hoosiers scored 14 a piece in the first and fourth quarters to get the easy victory.

Ethan Garbers went without a touchdown pass in the game, and DeShaun Foster’s Rose Bowl head coaching debut was not what fans were hoping for.

For better or for worse, the Big Ten era got underway, and seeing the Big Ten logo at the Rose Bowl will take some getting used to. Here are some of the best photos from the game.

Rapper Rich Homie Quan, who had role in 2014 Rose Bowl, passes away at age 34

Rapper Rich Homie Quan, who was on the sidelines for MSU’s 2014 Rose Bowl win, tragically passed away at the age of 34

Back in 2013, one of the biggest songs in the world was Type of Way by rapper Rich Homie Quan. The song became the anthem of the 2013-14 Michigan State football team, especially in their postgame celebrations. It became such a big part of the team, they actually flew Rich Homie Quan out for their 2014 Rose Bowl win over Stanford.

Unfortunately, Rich Homie Quan tragically passed away this week at the age of 34. The cause of death is suspected to be from a drug overdose.

For those who were following the team at the time, Rich Homie Quan will always be a part of the history of MSU in one of the most cherished victories of the Mark Dantonio era.

Mark Dantonio to be inducted to the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame

Back in 2014, Michigan State football had one of their biggest wins of the Mark Dantonio era when they knocked off Stanford 24-20 to win the Rose Bowl. It was the Big Ten’s second Rose Bowl win since the year 2000.

For his efforts, Coach Mark Dantonio will be inducted into the Rose Bowl’s Class of 2024 along with Reggie Bush and LaMichael James.

Notre Dame projected to make College Football Playoff, go to Rose Bowl

That’s more like it.

It’s funny how one quality road victory by Notre Dame can change people’s opinions.

Before the Irish beat Texas A&M in their season opener, many college football experts had them on the outside looking in when it came to the College Football Playoff. Brett McMurphy of The Action Network was one of them.

After the Irish’s victory though, McMurphy has jumped into the Irish believers camp. He released his latest bowl projections, and it’s definitely an improvements from his previous projection of Notre Dame playing in the Holiday Bowl.

McMurphy not only has the Irish making the playoff as the eighth seed, but he sees them making the trip to Pasadena on New Year’s Day:

Losing to the top seed in the bracket would be nothing to be ashamed of and a positive step toward the future. If the Irish take care of business throughout the regular season though, we could be looking at even grander predictions for them.

Archie Griffin statue to be unveiled at Ohio Stadium on August 30

Immortalized forever at Ohio Stadium #GoBucks

Just this past weekend, Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history had a statue unveiled in his honor at the Rose Bowl. Ohio State Athletic Director, Ross Bjork announced shortly after that the same honor will be bestowed on Griffin outside Ohio Stadium.

No one is a bigger ambassador of college football or The Ohio State University than Griffin. It probably should’ve happened much sooner, however, this seems like a fitting year as 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Archie winning his first Heisman in 1974.

The statue that will be unveiled on August 30, the day before the season opener for the Buckeyes, is a gift from the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation. It will be a replica of the one that now stands near the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

When you think Ohio State football, Archie Griffin is among the first to come to mind. The entire opening weekend of the season will be one celebrating Griffin. Not only will his statue be revealed, but Archie will have the honor of dotting the “I” in Script Ohio. He will become the only 16th non-band member to do so.

UCLA announced standing room section only for students

UCLA making an interesting change.

The UCLA Bruins football program announced some changes to the seating areas at the Rose Bowl for the 2024 season. UCLA Football will now have student sections available in standing room only.

When the announcement was made they discussed that the student section from sections 2 through 6 will consist of safe standing areas. They will also be able to get UCLA students closer to the action than they have ever been at the Rose Bowl.

The Rose Bowl has been the home of the Bruins football team since 1982. The Rose Bowl is one of the most famous college football stadiums in the country. The current seating capacity is just over 91,000.

The first game at the Rose Bowl for the Bruins is slated for September 14th against the Indiana Hoosiers. The 2024 Bruins also host the Oregon Ducks, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Iowa Hawkeyes, USC Trojans, and Fresno State Bulldogs at the Rose Bowl in 2024.

Archie Griffin has statue unveiled at Rose Bowl

No one more deserving #GoBucks

Archie Griffin is royalty in Columbus. As the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history, Griffin is also a national treasure and one of the greatest ambassadors of the game.

Archie had an incredible career at Ohio State. As a four-year starter, Griffin would rush for over 5,500 yards and was at one point the all-time leader in rushing yards. While toting the rock for the Scarlet and Gray, the Buckeyes would play in four Rose Bowl games.

Although OSU went 1-3 in those four games, Griffin clearly left his mark. In those four Rose Bowls, Archie rushed for over 400 yards and was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990. Now he’ll be immortalized for all time as a statue of the Buckeye running back was unveiled at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

When asked about the honor Griffin spoke as eloquently as ever praising those who helped him achieve the honor.

“It means so much it’s indescribable,” said Griffin, one of two players to start in four consecutive Rose Bowl games. “I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time with the right people to allow me to be on great teams that did so well. With me having a statue, I look at it as an honor to the teams that I played on.”

Always a class act, Archie Griffin epitomizes what college football should be all about. There may be no one more deserving of this honor that has been bestowed upon him. Always making Buckeye Nation proud.
