Celtics injury update: Jaylen Brown, Romeo Langford available vs. Rox; Dennis Schroder, Timelord probable

Another key player might miss the game to illness, though.

The Boston Celtics will likely have a lot more firepower at their disposal against the Houston Rockets this evening as the team’s injury report is showing some positive trends in terms of player health.

Star forward Jaylen Brown has been upgraded to available against the Rockets, his right hamstring strain evidently healed enough to make a return to action. Romeo Langford and Dennis Schroder have both been dealing with ankle sprains, with Langford listed as available and Schroder probable, and Robert Williams III also listed as probable after missing several games to left knee tendinopathy.

The team might be without the services of Josh Richardson however, who is listed as questionable with a non-COVID illness bothering him.

While it is never wise to play down to an NBA team, the 1 – 15 Rockets are a solid option for the Celtics returning to get their sea legs beneath them before a showdown with the East-leading Brooklyn Nets this Wednesday.

WATCH: When will the Boston Celtics’ youth movement step up?

Or more to the point, when will they get a chance to?

The Boston Celtics are by all accounts a much deeper team than they were last season after loading up on some veteran talent in the offseason. And while they definitely needed to (and did) cull some of the less-promising players from the roster for the 2021-22 NBA season, they also needed to make sure they had a plan in place to develop the young talent still with the team.

So far this season, new head coach Ime Udoka has been leaning heavily on the veterans, with the younger players save for Romeo Langford mostly getting inconsistent — if any — playing time while little use gets made of the Maine Celtics at the G League level apart from the two way players, Langford and center Bruno Caboclo.

Will the Celtics’ youth movement ever make the leap to solid rotation players or better? Do they have enough runway in place to do it? And what needs to change to maximize their potential for the team moving forward?

The hosts of the CLNS Media podcast “The Garden Report” explored this topic on their most recent podcast — watch the video embedded above to hear their take on this issue.

Boston Celtics guard Romeo Langford says team needs to improve on finishing games

Boston Celtics guard Romeo Langford said the team needs to get better at finishing games when they have a lead following a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boston Celtics guard Romeo Langford said the team needs to improve on their ability to finish out possessions and games during a press conference Monday ahead of the team’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 5-7 Celtics dropped a game against the 9-5 Cavs on Saturday, allowing Cleveland to come back from down 12 points at the end of the fourth quarter.

“Like I said after the Miami game, just playing complete a full game, finishing games off,” Langford said on what needs to improve. “Also, we had a few defensive errors with slipping on the screens and communicating. So just really that. And offensive rebounds late in the game messes up just the same things that kind of get us most of the time when we’re up like that.”

Langford touched on the teams’ offensive rebounding performance as well, saying a few late offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter cost them big.

He is playing the most minutes of his career to this point, with nearly 20 per game. He is one of just three Celtics hitting 40% or better from three-point range with a 47.4% so far this season, alongside Jabari Parker (50.0%) and Grant Williams (40.0%).

Celtics injury update: Trio of Boston players join Jaylen Brown on report

Could the Hospital Celtics be about to make an appearance against the Cavs?

The Boston Celtics are a bit more banged up after wresting a 122 – 113 overtime win against the Milwaukee Bucks at TD Garden on Friday night. In addition to All-Star forward Jaylen Brown’s ongoing recovery from a strained right hamstring, a trio of his teammates join him on the injury report in the aftermath of the hard-earned victory.

Veteran big man Al Horford is listed as questionable for Saturday night’s road tilt with the Cleveland Cavaliers, wing Josh Richardson is also listed as questionable with right knee tendinopathy, and shooting guard Romeo Langford is listed as probable with a sprained right ankle.

A potential loss of Horford, in particular, will be hard for the Celtics to adapt to given the unusual size of the Cavs’ frontcourt, which may be why the team recalled big man Bruno Fernando from the Maine Celtics on assignment.

Celtics reportedly pick up 2022-23 team options on Aaron Nesmith, Grant Williams, Payton Pritchard, Romeo Langford

The rookie-scale foursome will be under contract at least one more season with Boston, barring a trade.

Surprising no one, the Boston Celtics elected to pick up the player options on four of their rookie-scale players Monday, per multiple sources.  Aaron Nesmith, Grant Williams, Payton Pritchard, and Romeo Langford all had their team options for the 2022-23 NBA season picked up.

This was widely expected in advance of the news given all four have shown signs of being capable of playing at least deep rotation minutes moving forward, with Williams and Langford already earning consistent time under new head coach Ime Udoka. NBA Insiders Shams Charania of The Athletic and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN first reported news of the Williams and Langford options being picked up.

Pritchard will be earning just $2.2 million next season, Nesmith $3.8 million, Williams $4.3 million, and Langford $5.6 million, all bargains for their respective levels of production.

Pritchard and Nesmith will both have another team option remaining on their final year (2023-24) of their rookie contracts moving forward.

The Celtics will be without two rotation pieces for Monday’s matchup with the Hornets

The Celtics will be without to rotational pieces on Monday in Charlotte:

On Monday night in Charlotte, the Celtics will look to pick up their second straight shorthanded win as a pair of rotational pieces are out for Boston.

Starting with the good news, the Celtics will have Jaylen Brown back after he missed Sunday’s win over Houston with left patellar tendinopathy. With the second night of a back-to-back likely factoring into the equation, they will be without Romeo Langford and Al Horford on Monday.

Horford is being listed with a left abductor strain, while Langford has left calf tightness causing them to miss Monday’s matchup with the Hornets. The injuries will potentially open up opportunities for players on the fringes of the Boston rotation, as coach Ime Udoka said he will be looking to go small in order to deal with the loss of Horford. Whether that means Enes Kanter, Juancho Hernangomez, Jabari Parker, or some combination of the three getting minutes remains to be seen, but at least one of them should likely crack a shorthanded Celtics rotation.

The Celtics (1-2) and Hornets (3-0) are set to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.

WATCH: Boston’s Romeo Langford gets 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting vs. Heat

The third-year wing might be ready for a bigger role.

In one of his best games yet as a Boston Celtic, third-year wing Romeo Langford managed to put up the kind of numbers against the Miami Heat on Friday’s preseason finale that gives you hope that the Indiana product might just make the leap forward this season both he and the Celtics need.

His defense was as solid as ever, Langford shot with confidence, putting up 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block while shooting a sizzling 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc with just 1 personal foul and turnover each as a starter on the floor for 28 minutes of game time. While it might have only been a preseason contest, it is exactly what you’d hope to see from the New Albany native — and hopefully a harbinger of what’s to come.

To see Langford’s game against The Heat for yourself, watch the highlight clip embedded below put together by YouTuber Tomasz Kordylweski.

Celtics player grades: Boston blown out by Miami Heat in preseason finale – 10/17

Grading every player of note in Boston’s blowout preseason loss to the Miami Heat Oct. 15.

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their slate of 2020-21 NBA preseason games with a 121 – 100 blowout loss to the Miami Heat that might not mean very much in terms of regular season record or even what we can expect from the team when games do count, but there are some things to be gleaned from the player’s play on a more granular level of analysis.

With the team’s season opener against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden coming on Wednesday, Oct. 20, which players at the end of rotation helped themselves in earning a bigger role? Did anyone do enough to likely secure their position on the roster? How do we feel about the heavy-minutes players?

Let’s give some grades to those who were on the floor long enough to warrant a closer look.

Boston’s Romeo Langford soaks in hitting the game-winner, but knows there’s work to be done

Could the third-year wing be on the precipice of a much-needed leap?

While there are plenty of reasonable explanations as to why a former lottery pick in Boston Celtics third-year wing Romeo Langford hasn’t quite carved a role out for himself in the league just yet ranging from injury luck to COVID-19 to the pandemic itself, the NBA is an unforgiving league.

The former No. 14 pick will need to show some growth this season to assure himself a spot in the league with more security than the sort his defense might provide him on the NBA’s fringes. But in the very first preseason contest of the Celtics’ 2021-22 campaign, Langford hit the game-winning shot with an air of quiet confidence that bodes very well for a positive outcome as described above.

“It felt good,” said Langford. “It felt good to get out there and knock down a couple shots and knock down a big one.”

WATCH: Romeo Langford is ready for whatever his role will be with the Boston Celtics

The third-year shooting guard is planning to be flexible.

Coming into his third season in the NBA, Boston Celtics shooting guard Romeo Langford has not yet carved out a defined role, but that does not mean that the former University of Indiana player is not prepared to take on whatever jobs the team throws his way.

Speaking to the media after training camp on Tuesday, the New Albany native described his willingness to do what his club needs him to do.

“Wherever my role is, when I get called upon I’ll be ready,” explained Langford.

He also discussed his wrist injury as well as the team’s general vibes heading into camp.

Watch the video embedded below to hear everything Langford had to say about training camp so far and the season ahead, via the folks over at CLNS Media.
