USC edge defender Romello Height enters the trasfer portal

We wish Romello Height the best, wherever he ultimately lands.

A USC fan favorite is moving elsewhere. Redshirt senior Romello Height, a promising prospect at the rush end position, will enter the transfer portal for the second time in his college career.

Height was originally a four-star recruit and the Georgia Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year in high school who signed with the Auburn Tigers.  He transferred to USC in 2022 where he began the season as the starting rush end and was expected to add speed and toughness to the edge defense. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the second game of the season against Stanford.

Returning to action in 2023, Height came off the bench in his only full season at USC, playing in every game except Washington in Week 10. In Week 3 against Arizona State, he had his most significant impact, recording five tackles and two sacks. His only other game with at least three tackles was the previous week against Stanford. As the season progressed, his production diminished significantly. He finished the season with 21 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, and a fumble recovery.

If granted a medical hardship waiver for the 2022 season, he could possibly have three years of eligibility.

USC EDGE, former Tiger Romello Height enters transfer portal

A member of Auburn’s 2020 haul, Height is seeking other opportunities following a two-year stay at USC.

A member of Auburn’s 2020 recruiting haul is exploring new opportunities.

[autotag]Romello Height[/autotag], a former four-star EDGE who signed with Auburn during the 2020 recruiting cycle, announced Friday that he is entering the transfer portal after spending two seasons at USC.

He played in nine games in two seasons at Auburn, recording 18 total tackles. His best games in an Auburn uniform took place during the 2021 season against Alabama State and Arkansas when he made four stops each.

His most productive season at USC was in 2023, where he competed in 11 games and recorded 20 tackles. Six of those tackles were for a loss. He recorded a season-high five tackles in the Trojans’ win over Arizona State on Sept. 23. He also recorded two tackles for loss, and recovered a fumble.

Height was a part of Auburn’s 2020 class that ranked No. 8 in the nation and turned out to be the final signing class under former head coach [autotag]Gus Malzahn[/autotag]. He was the No. 16 recruit of Auburn’s 27-member signing class. Several headliners of the class include [autotag]Wesley Steiner[/autotag] and [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and several who transferred away from the program such as [autotag]Kobe Hudson[/autotag], [autotag]JJ Pegues[/autotag], and [autotag]LaDarrius Tennison[/autotag].

USC statistical leaders through six games

You probably can name one of these guys offhand.

USC nearly lost its perfect season against Arizona but survived. Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff chances ended with a loss at Louisville. Neither team is coming into their annual meeting with the best momentum. That means talent could be the game’s determining factor.

This is a perfect opportunity for the Trojans to make a statement. They’re catching the Irish when they’re fatigued and struggling. The only thing that could slow them down is the wet conditions forecast for the game, but they’re preparing for that by using water in rather interesting ways in practice. While there’s no way to tell if that will affect anything, it shows they’re not leaving anything up to chance.

As you’re about to see, there are several players responsible for the Trojans’ offense being the country’s highest scoring, not the least of whom is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. Here he is among the top Trojans players on both sides of the ball:

Auburn has a chance to sign its best linebacker class in a decade

Josh Aldridge has assmebled an impressive linebacker class and itsn’t done yet.

On Wednesday Auburn landed its highest-rated commit since 2019 when they successfully flipped five-star linebacker [autotag]Demarcus Riddick[/autotag] from the Georgia Bulldogs.

Riddick is the headliner of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class and is further proof that [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and Co. can now win recruiting battles with Alabama and Georgia, something you have to do if you want to compete in the SEC.

A ton of credit also goes to linebackers coach [autotag]Josh Aldridge[/autotag], who has landed several top targets but his pursuit of Riddick is the most impressive. He had a ton of ground to make up as the previous staff had not yet offered Riddick when he committed to the Bulldogs.

Aldridge quickly extended an offer and after a full-court press, the Tigers pulled off the flip.

He is the second linebacker that Auburn has beaten Georgia for this cycle, just last month they landed four-star linebacker [autotag]Joseph Phillips[/autotag], beating out the Bulldogs for the talented but raw linebacker.

The duo of Riddick and Phillips has made linebacker one of the strengths of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class and the addition of three-star [autotag]D’Angelo Barber[/autotag] makes it one of Auburn’s best hauls at linebacker in years.

While there is still plenty of time left before any of them can sign, the Tigers haven’t signed three or more high-school linebackers in the same cycle since 2020 when they landed four-star prospects [autotag]Wesley Steiner[/autotag], [autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag] and [autotag]Desmond Tisdol[/autotag] and three-star [autotag]Romello Height[/autotag].

What separates the 2024 class from that group is that both Riddick (No. 26) and Phillips (No. 132) are top 150 prospects while only Steiner (No. 98) was from the 2020 haul.

The 2019 class, consisting of five-star Pappoe, four-star [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and three-stars Octavious Brothers and Kameron Brown, also has a case as the best in recent history.

As it currently stands, these two classes are extremely similar. Both are headlined by a five-star with a second top prospect who projects more as a pass-rusher but is capable of playing linebacker. With the 2019 class having one more member, it has more depth and is slightly better.

With Auburn not signing any linebackers last year they are in need of a large class, making it likely they will add at least one or two more players and Aldrige has the Tigers in a great spot with two more targets, four-star [autotag]Bradley Shaw[/autotag] and three-star [autotag]Wyatt Simmons[/autotag].

If they add Shaw it will give them three blue-chip linebackers, something they have only twice in the past 10 cycles, the 2020 class and in 2015 when they landed Richard McBryde, Jeff Holland and Darrell Williams. While that class also included three-star Robert Muschamp, it lacked a five-star prospect to compare with Riddick.

Due to the top-end talent of Riddick and Phillips and the depth of Barber, Auburn’s 2024 class is on the verge of being the best the Tigers have signed in the past 10 cycles, if they can add one or both of Shaw and Simmons then it will jump past the 2019 and 2015 classes and undoubtedly be the best linebacker class in the past decade.

USC edge rusher Romello Height (shoulder) has surgery, likely out for the season

USC’s thin defensive line just got thinner. This reinforces how important it is that Lincoln Riley, Alex Grinch, and Shaun Nua are landing DL recruits for 2023.

USC’s defensive line is currently being stocked with recruits … for 2023. In 2022, this is USC’s thinnest position group, with the offensive line not too far behind.

USC’s defensive line just got thinner on Thursday. Lincoln Riley announced that rush end Romello Height, the transfer from Auburn, will likely be out for the remainder of the 2022 season with a shoulder injury. Height had surgery earlier this week to repair that shoulder.

Height’s absence puts more of a focus — and loads more pressure — on Korey Foreman, the other main rush end on the USC defensive roster. Foreman has made what could reasonably be viewed as incremental progress, but he and the other performers on the defensive line are a long way from transforming this unit into a team strength. The main goal for USC’s defensive line right now is “be competent,” something better than awful. Playing average football is likely good enough with the offense the Trojans have. Playing poorly will get USC in trouble.

The thin defensive line does mean that Lincoln Riley’s recent recruiting wins are especially valuable. Riley, Alex Grinch, and defensive line coach Shaun Nua are replenishing the roster with defensive linemen for next year. USC’s current depth concerns won’t exist to the same extent in 2023. That’s the good news.

Meanwhile, a thin USC defensive line must prepare for Oregon State without Romello Height.

Wisconsin OLB Nick Herbig is the top-ranked edge rusher in this PFF stat

Wisconsin outside linebacker Nick Herbig lands at the top of all edge rushers in this PFF stat:

On Wednesday night, Pro Football Focus ranked returning edge rushers with the highest pass rush win rates last season, and Wisconsin outside linebacker ranked first with a pass rush win percentage of 27.1.

Related: Wisconsin RB Braelon Allen named USA TODAY Sports preseason All-American

Herbig had a fantastic year in 2021 and was a constant threat against opposing quarterbacks on the edge. He finished last season with 61 total tackles, nine sacks, four passes defended and a forced fumble. The Kauai, Hawaii, native ranked just ahead of USC transfer Romello Height and Iowa State defensive end Will McDonald IV.

Nick Herbig has improved every season that he has been with the Badgers, and it would be no surprise to see him continue to follow in the footsteps of other legendary Badgers’ edge rushers this season.

Romeo Height has entered the transfer portal

Auburn has lost an edge rusher to the portal.

Auburn has lost a defensive lineman to the transfer portal.

Romeo Height, a 6-foot-3 sophomore EDGE rusher out of Dublin, Georgia, has officially entered the transfer portal. Height recorded 18 tackles and 3 TFL this season. He was a three-star linebacker coming out of high school. Auburn converted him to the EDGE position.

The Tigers have extreme depth along the defensive line and should be one of the better D-line units in the SEC next season. Height’s announcement comes after fellow EDGE rusher Eku Leota announced that he will be returning to Auburn for another season.

Best of luck to Height wherever he choses to go.

Auburn defense down two players due to injuries

With the 2020 season just days away Auburn is in final preperation for the season but will be without two defenders indefinitely.

With the 2020 season just days away, Auburn is preparing for its season opener against Kentucky but will be without two defenders indefinitely.

Gus Malzahn announced Tuesday that redshirt freshman linebacker O.C. Brothers and true freshman Buck defensive lineman Romello Height will both be out indefinitely due to shoulder injuries.

“They had shoulder procedures in the off-season, so they’re recovering,” Malzahn said. “We’re hoping we can get both of those guys back before the end of the season.”

Brothers, a member of Auburn’s 2019 recruiting class,  played against Kent State and Samford last season and recorded two tackles as well as being named to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

Height, a former three-star recuit out of Dublin, Ga., signed with the Tigers  in December after flipping his commitment from Miami to Auburn.
