Mock draft watch: Lions attack big needs in Draft Wire’s latest 3-round projection

The Lions pick at No. 2 and No. 24 overall in the first round in the latest projections

The latest 3-round mock draft from Draft Wire cuts right to the chase for the Detroit Lions. Detroit has major needs on both sides of the ball, and this set of projections from Draft Wire editor Luke Easterling hits them prominently.

The 2022 NFL draft projection sees the Lions picking No. 2 overall with their own pick and then selecting No. 24 in the first round with the pick acquired from the Los Angeles Rams. With big needs for impact talents, these choices check off a lot of boxes for Detroit.

At No. 2 overall, it’s Oregon pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. He’s the consensus top pass-rushing talent in this draft right now despite being sidelined with an injury for the last few weeks.

With the Rams pick, now projected at No. 24 overall, Nevada QB Carson Strong gets the nod. Strong continues to earn more positive reviews each week and has the kind of big arm and gutsy mindset that might remind Lions fans of a recent longtime starter in Detroit.

The Day 2 picks address the Lions’ needs on the perimeter. Clemson wideout Justyn Ross is the first pick of the second round at No. 33, while Auburn CB Roger McCreary projects as the second pick of the third round. The NFL alternates picks by round for teams that finish with the same record, and right now the Lions and Jaguars remain the league’s only winless teams after Week 5.

Mock draft watch: Lions 3-round mock bolsters major weak points on the roster

Draft Wire released the latest 2022 3-round mock draft and addressed many of the weak areas surrounding the Detroit Lions

With an 0-4 start for the season for the Detroit Lions, some are holding out hope for some relevance this season, but some have their sights on next year’s draft.

The 2021 roster was already labeled as one of the league’s weaker rosters, and it seems like it is getting much worse each week. It seems like a key player is landing on either injured reserve or missing games, causing an already decrepitated roster to almost hit rock bottom.

Every week it is relatively easy to see where the major wrinkles sit with the Lions, and this week Luke Easterling tackles those areas in his latest Draft Wire 3-round mock draft.

1st round (2nd overall):  Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon

1st round (26th overall): Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina

2nd round (33rd overall): Drake London, WR, USC

3rd round (66th overall): Roger McCreary, CB, Auburn

Another year, another Oregon Duck in the 1st round for the Lions, but this time on the defensive side. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much from Thibodeaux due to an ankle injury in the season opener, but some believe he doesn’t have much more to prove in the college ranks. However, as an elite pass rusher with a special blend of athleticism, he is someone the Lions desperately need on defense to turn around this ship.

Many believe Jared Goff is not the answer at quarterback, but this year’s crop of college quarterbacks has not lived up to expectations. One of those disappointments being Sam Howell from North Carolina, who was touted as a potential No. 1 overall pick. He has been repeatedly mocked to the Lions with their first pick through the year, but some of the luster has worn off. What he lacks in overall arm strength he makes up for through his accuracy. Many have compared Howell to Baker Mayfield, and the offensive line the Lions are building could work but may take time.

It is not outrageous to say the Lions have one of the worst receiving corps in the league. In the last draft, people were begging for Brad Holmes to take a wide receiver, and he eventually did by taking Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth round. But here comes another USC wideout to the Lions. London currently leads the FBS with 670 receiving yards and as an early contender for the Biletnikoff Award for college’s most outstanding receiver. In addition, former USC quarterback Carson Palmer hailed London as the next Megatron due to his big, physical talent. Now I’m not sure about that, but those are big shoes to fill if that were the case.

Currently, the Lions’ cornerback corps is a little muddied right now. Jeff Okudah suffered an Achilles injury that may alter his career in the future. Also, the depth behind him in Amani Oruwariye and Ifeatu Melifonwu is not giving any warm fuzzies. However, McCreary is the type of corner that will fit well in the Lions defensive scheme with strong instincts and smooth transitions due to his strong athleticism. This year is the first time he has been a full-time starter, but so far, he is stepping up and could provide a potential strong presence in a much-needed Lions secondary.

Winners from Auburn’s 62-0 win over Alabama State

Here are our three winners from Auburn’s win over Alabama State.

It was not always pretty but Auburn football rolled to another win Saturday.

The Tigers had a disappointing first quarter but exploded for 35 points in the third quarter to cruise to a 62-0 win over Alabama State. The 35 points tie the Auburn record for most points in a quarter (New Mexico State, 1993) and are the most they have ever scored in the third quarter.

The quarter was capped off by Jarquez Hunter’s 94-yard touchdown run, which is the longest touchdown run in Auburn history.

The Tigers, now 2-0, will look to travel to Penn State and have the chance to make a huge statement across all of college football.

But before that, here are three winners from the win over Alabama State.

Nine Auburn players named to preseason coaches All-SEC teams

Auburn had the third-most players named to the preseason coaches All-SEC teams

Nine Auburn players have been named to the 2021 preseason coaches All-SEC teams, that the SEC announced Tuesday.

Auburn’s nine selections are the third-most in the conference, behind only Alabama’s 13 and Georgia’s 11.

Tank Bigsby led the way for Auburn as the first-team running back and second-team all-purpose player.

Bigsby was the only player named to the first-team as center Nick Brahms, linebacker Zakoby McClain, safety Smoke Monday, and kicker Anders Carlson were all named to the second-team.

Quarterback Bo Nix, offensive lineman Brodarious Hamm, linebacker Owen Pappoe and cornerback Roger McCreary were each named to the coaches All-SEC third-team. Nix and Missouri’s Connor Bazelak tied for the quarterback spot on the third-team, while Hamm was tied with Ole Miss’ Nick Broeker and Arkansas’ Ty Clary for their spot on the third team.

Roger McCreary and his brilliant decision

Roger McCreary made a brilliant decision this offseason and it’s going to pay off.

Roger McCreary made a big-time decision that surprised a ton of Auburn fans last year.

He wanted one more season at Auburn.

His tremendous 2020 campaign put him on the radar for NFL scouts, but he decided another year of improvement could propel him to the top of some NFL team’s draft boards.

The tandem of McCreary and new Auburn corner and former West Virginia standout Dreshun Miller could be one of the best pair of corners in college football.

Jake Crain, the host of the “JBoy Show,” believes his decision was a brilliant one. Crain joined “Locked On Auburn” to talk about it.

“Roger McCreary in my opinion is going to be a very high draft pick. I think it was a brilliant move for him to come back,” said Crain. “I know for a fact that NFL scouts grade him really high and it takes so much pressure off the safeties and the nickel when you can have two corners that can go out there and be effective in man and effective in zone.”

McCreary was the highest-rated defender for Auburn in 2020 according to PFF. He scored an 80.8 defensive rating over the course of the whole season. His rating was 72.4 in 2018 and improved to 78.8 in 2019.

If he can continue to improve, the sky is the limit for his game.

Two Auburn players make PFF’s top 50 list

Tank Bigsby and Roger McCreary make the cut for PFF’s top 50 players in college football list.

Auburn running back Tank Bigsby and cornerback Roger McCreary have been ranked in PFF’s top 50 players in college football right now.

Auburn’s star running back came in at number 17 on the list. Bigsby took the SEC by storm last year despite the Tigers struggling on the offensive line. Bigsby suffered an injury during the game against Tennessee.

PFF’s analytics claimed that Bigsby was the fifth most valuable freshman that was not a quarterback in 2020. They also had this to say about the Auburn ball carrier.

“The 2020 four-star recruit who ranked 40th nationally, according to 247Sports, was easily among the most elusive ball carriers in college football last year. His strong contact balance was on full display as he came away with the fifth-most broken tackles per attempt (0.34) in the FBS.”

McCreary is ranked as the 49th ranked player in college football according to PFF. Auburn fans watched the talented cornerback handle opposing wide receivers with finesse and aggression in 2020.

Auburn has one of the deepest defensive backs rooms in college football and McCreary leads the way for the unit.

PFF had high praise for McCreary.

“He’s fast, fluid, has great feet and is scheme-versatile. This Auburn secondary is among the most talented in the country with McCreary leading the way, and he is more than capable of producing at an elite level in 2021 after ranking 21st among Power 5 corners in coverage grade in 2019 and 15th in 2020.”

PFF’s rankings are unbiased and look solely at their analytics and formulas.

Auburn football: Top defensive players ahead of 2021 season

From Roger McCreary to Colby Wooden, Auburn has talented players returning on defense in Derek Mason’s first season as coordinator.

For the past several seasons the strength of Auburn has been its defense and despite a new coaching staff and scheme that should still be the case in 2021.

New defensive coordinator Derek Mason will have a talented group that is also returning a ton of production. The Tigers will have five of their top seven tacklers from a season ago have returned and the top six in tackles for loss and four in sacks are also back.

While Mason will have limited time with the players and the defense will look quite different, the level of production should not take a step back from the Kevin Steele defenses that were a staple of Auburn over the past several years.

Here is a look at the top five players on the defensive side of the ball ahead of the 2021 season.

Alabama is set to host in-state Auburn on Saturday for the Iron Bowl. The No. 1 Crimson Tide (7-0) are fresh off a dominant 63-3 victory over Kentucky while the No. 19 Tigers (5-2) are on a three-game win streak.

Fans are plenty familiar with the standout players for Alabama, but there might be a few out there who are curious to know more about Auburn as Saturday approaches. Well, we have got you covered.

Below are 10 Auburn players that Crimson Tide fans should know about for the upcoming Iron Bowl. Enjoy!

Auburn will have a new look secondary in 2020

Auburn had five defensive backs on the field for the majority of their snaps last season and to do so in 2020 they will be turning to four new starters.

Auburn had five defensive backs on the field for the majority of its snaps last season and, to do so in 2020, the Tigers will be turning to four new starters.

Gone are senior safeties Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas and cornerbacks Davis and Noah Igbinoghene. Those four combined to make 247 tackles, 12 tackles, four interceptions and break up 15 passes.

The Tigers still have experienced players on their roster and will turn to a group of juniors to emerge as the core of the secondary in 2020 and there is confidence in the unit as a whole.

At safety, Smoke Monday and Jamien Sherwood are poised to step in as starters and to have just as much success as Dinson and Thomas did a season ago.

“To be completely honest with you, they’re going to be better,” Dinson said in December. “Those guys have so much potential to be better than me and Daniel. I see it now, to be honest with you. Long guys, they can do both — play the run and play the pass. Man, the sky’s the limit for them.”

Both of the juniors have been immediate contributors, with both playing in all 26 games since their arrival on campus and have made some key plays.

Monday recorded the game-ending sack of Washington quarterback Jake Browning that ultimately sealed an Auburn win in 2018 and had a 29-yard interception return for a score in Auburn’s win over Alabama last season.

Sherwood was graded as the best freshman safety in the country in 2018, per Pro Football Focus, and has already emerged as one of the leaders of the defense.

The question about safety isn’t about the starters, it’s about who will rotate in alongside Monday and Sherwood and, thanks to defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, we have a better picture of how that battle is going.

In a recent Zoom press conference, he announced that senior Jordyn Peters had moved to safety from nickel and, he along with freshmen Chris Thompson Jr., are the two rotating behind the starters.

Peters has been a star on special teams, blocking three punts in 2018 before a foot injury limited his impact a season ago. Peters is another player with plenty of experience (37 appearances) but has minimal starter experience.

Thompson will have a chance to follow a similar path to Sherwood and Monday by enrolling early and immediately factoring into the rotation. He was a four-star recruit and top 200 player nationally and top 20 at his position, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Thompson is a hard hitter who will be capable of providing run support and protecting the middle of the field.

Auburn may be replacing both starting corners but there was never any doubt about who was going to get one of the jobs.

Roger McCreary may have been the teams No. 3 corner but he played just as much as the starters and is the clear frontrunner as the teams new No. 1 corner. The junior finished last season with 36 tackles, one interception and a team-leading 12 pass break ups and has his teammates and coaches expecting big things of him.

“I’d say he’s a top-3 corner in the SEC, honestly,” junior wide receiver Anthony Schwartz said. “Seeing him now, he’s more confident in his craft. I think he’s going to be able to lock down that side of the field.”

“Roger McCreary has really taken the next step,” Gus Malzahn said. “You can just tell his confidence level is at a different level. He’s had an excellent camp so far. He’s one of our leaders.”

The question about corner is who will line up across from him on the other boundary, with Marco Domio, Nehemiah Pritchett, Matthew Hill, Devan Barrett and Jaylin Simpson all in the mix.

Hill, a converted wide receiver, has enjoyed a smooth transition to defense so far and it trying to follow in Igbinoghene’s footsteps as a former wide out turned dominant corner.

Domino, a JUCO transfer, has experience and is a strong contender to emerge as the team’s second corner. Pritchett played in seven games as a freshman in 2019, totaling four tackles. Reed, a four-star safety signee is listed at corner.

Auburn’s lone returning starter is Christian Tutt, who totaled 32 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, two pass breakups and two interceptions from the nickel spot last year. According to Steele, Zion Puckett and Ladarious Tennison are backing up Tutt at nickel.

Puckett totaled four tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup in four appearances as a freshman last season. Tennison was a coveted four-star athlete out of Rockledge, Florida, who is another early enrollee who could see early playing time.

“He can play Star, corner, he’s an excellent returner,” Malzahn said about Tennison.

With the way Steele handles his defensive rotations most of these players will play and the backups may play just as much as the starters as McCreary did a season ago.
