Former Georgia kicker Rodrigo Blankenship signs with new NFL team

Former UGA football star kicker Rodrigo Blankenship has signed with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad.

Former Georgia Bulldogs star kicker Rodrigo Blankenship has signed with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. Arizona’s starting kicker, Matt Prater, has a hip injury and may not be able to play on Thursday against the New Orleans Saints.

The Cardinals waived kicker Matt Amendola, who missed an extra point in Arizona’s loss to Seattle on Sunday. There’s a good chance the Cardinals will utilize Blankenship on Thursday against the Saints.

Earlier this year, the Indianapolis Colts waived Blankenship after he missed a 42-yard game-winning field goal attempt for the Colts during overtime in Week 1.

Blankenship won Indianapolis’ kicker competition last season. The former Georgia standout has converted on 45 of 54 kicks during his NFL career.  Blankenship has made 52 out of 55 extra points.

Ex-Colts K Rodrigo Blankenship signed to Cardinals practice squad

The Cardinals are giving Rodrigo Blankenship a shot.

Former Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship signed with the Arizona Cardinals practice squad Tuesday, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Blankenship, who had been the starting kicker for the last three seasons, was released following a disastrous Week 1 outing against the Houston Texans in which he was a major contributor in the overtime tie.

The issues of inconsistency and a lack of range came to a boiling point, and the Colts replaced him with Chase McLaughlin, who has been on fire since joining the team.

But with the Cardinals dealing with kicking issues of their own, they are giving Blankenship a second chance to revive his career.

Potential kickers Chargers could sign in wake of Dustin Hopkins’ injury

Here are a few kickers on the street the Chargers could bring in.

With Dustin Hopkins added to the injury report with a quad injury, the Chargers could potentially be in the band-aid kicker market.

With minor injuries like Hopkins’, teams usually sign a player to their practice squad and use one of that player’s three elevations to avoid using two roster spots on a kicker. Therefore, poaching a kicker from another team’s practice squad is probably not a viable option.

Here are a few kickers on the street Los Angeles could bring in.

Rodrigo Blankenship

Blankenship was cut by the Colts after Week 1 this season and has yet to land a new job despite missing just one kick in Indianapolis’ season opener. Historically, Blankenship is an accurate short-distance kicker: on field goals 39 yards or shorter, he’s missed only twice in his 22-game career. He’s also 52 of 55 on extra points. The problems start from 40 yards and out, where Blankenship is 16 of 23 and just 1 of 4 on kicks 50 or more yards. The former Georgia kicker has also suffered a hip injury that cut his 2021 season to just five games. Hip injuries are often career killers for kickers. But for a team as aggressive on fourth down as the Chargers, an accurate short kicker could be all they need.

Dominik Eberle

Eberle was in the NFL most recently of the names on this list, kicking for the Lions in Week 4. Unfortunately, he missed two extra points and barely snuck his other kicks inside the uprights in a game Detroit only lost by two points. Eberle was cut partially because incumbent kicker Austin Seibert should be back from injury this week, but Detroit added Michael Badgley on Tuesday as insurance rather than sticking with Eberle. Still, the NFL by and large tries out the same cadre of kickers over an entire season, and Eberle has most recently won one of those tryouts. Keep an eye on him as a potential visitor in the coming days.

Ryan Santoso

If your concern is kickoffs, might I recommend the big-legged Santoso, who has the power to drive every kickoff into or out the back of the end zone? Santoso spent most of this preseason in Jacksonville, where special teams coordinator Heath Farwell described his leg strength as “elite.” Despite that, he was released before playing a regular season game with Jacksonville, who opted to add other teams’ cast-offs and hold a brand new competition leading up to Week 1. As a result, Santoso only has seven career games across the 2019 and 2021 seasons under his belt, missing one field goal and two extra points in those opportunities.

Nick Sciba

The most accurate kicker in college football history, I was a bit surprised that Sciba didn’t catch on anywhere else after spending a few months as Chris Boswell’s understudy. Usually, kickers that sign to teams with established starters do so as an internship before landing somewhere else and earning a job. (Think of every Ravens kicker they’ve traded for late-round picks while Justin Tucker has been there.) Sciba never missed an extra point in his Wake Forest career and went 80 of 89 on field goals, but his career-long was 49 yards. Whether that was a Demon Deacon thing or a Nick Sciba thing is a question that’s largely gone unanswered, but the fact that he’s still on the street in Week 5 tells me his leg is probably far from the strongest.

Elliott Fry

Fry is perhaps best known as being the Falcons’ practice squad yo-yo last season, but he’s also spent time on eight other NFL teams as the perpetual 33rd-best kicker in the league. In three career games split between Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Kansas City, Fry is 5 of 6 on field goals and 5 of 7 on extra points. He lost a competition in Jacksonville to Santoso because of a hip injury, which could also explain why he hasn’t been picked up by a new team yet. Fry was also not among the group of kickers Detroit worked out on Tuesday before signing Badgley. That group included Sam Ficken, Lirim Hajrullahu, Brian Johnson, and Andrew Mevis. Perhaps that means Fry is not yet healthy. But if he is, the Chargers giving him his tenth NFL uniform may be in the cards.

Jaguars reportedly bring in a pair of kickers for tryouts

Riley Patterson has been consistent since joining the Jaguars, but the team is reportedly looking at kickers anyway.

Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson missed a 37-yard field in Week 1, but has made six consecutive field goals and seven extra points since.

Despite the strong start to the year for Patterson, the Jaguars are reportedly evaluating their options at kicker anyway. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Jaguars brought in former Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship and former New York Jets kicker Sam Ficken for tryouts Tuesday.

While Patterson’s play hasn’t necessitated a replacement, it’s possible the Jaguars are hunting for an upgrade to their practice squad where undrafted rookie kicker James McCourt currently holds a spot.

Jacksonville claimed McCourt off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers in August and claimed Patterson from the Detroit Lions a week later.

Blankenship, 25, spent the last two seasons with the Colts, but missed most of the 2021 season due to a hip injury. He was released by the team after missing a 42-yard field goal in overtime of a Week 1 tie with the Houston Texans, although he made two field goals and two extra points prior to the miss.

Ficken, 29, spent training camp with the Jaguars in 2016 and eventually had a stint as the Los Angeles Rams’ kicker in 2017 and 2018. He later stuck with the Jets, making 32 of 42 field goal attempts over a two-year span with the team. Ficken spent last season on the Titans injured reserve after injuring his groin ahead of the Week 1 opener.

Colts officially waive Rodrigo Blankenship among several roster moves

The Colts announced several roster moves, including the official waiving of Rodrigo Blankenship.

The Indianapolis Colts officially waived kicker Rodrigo Blankenship among several roster moves, the team announced Tuesday.

Blankenship’s erratic outing in Week 1 was the final straw for the Colts. Not only did he miss the game-winning field-goal attempt from 42 yards, but he also proved to be a liability on kickoffs.

The Colts brought in two kickers to the practice squad while making a number of moves Tuesday. Here’s a look:

Colts to sign two kickers to the practice squad

The Colts added two kickers to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts are signing kickers Chase McLaughlin and Lucas Havrisik to the practice squad, first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

It was reported earlier Tuesday that the Colts were waiving kicker Rodrigo Blankenship following his erratic performance against the Houston Texans in Week 1.

With two kickers on the practice squad, the Colts will have to make some room. But this also indicates there will be a competition for the role throughout practice this week.

McLaughlin has experience with the Colts. He spent the final four games of the 2019 season with the team after Adam Vinatieri was placed on the injured reserve list. In 31 career games, McLaughlin has converted 37-of-49 (75.5%) of his field-goal attempts.

What’s odd about McLaughlin’s career are the splits. He’s just 10-of-21 (47.6%) on kicks between 40-49 yards but is 28/29 (96.4%) on all other kicks. The only miss in the latter group of attempts was a 62-yarder in 2020.

Havrisik went undrafted during the 2022 NFL draft but received an invite to the rookie minicamp earlier this offseason. During his time at Arizona State, he converted 34-of-53 (64.2%) field-goal attempts and 73-of-78 (93.6%) extra-point attempts.

Both McLaughlin and Havrisik have experience with kickoffs, something Blankenship didn’t have much of during his time with the Colts.

Indianapolis Colts waive former Georgia Bulldog kicker

The Indianapolis Colts have released kicker Rodrigo Blankenship after missing a critical field goal attempt against the Houston Texans.

The Indianapolis Colts have waived former Georgia Bulldog star kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. The Colts tied the Houston Texans 20-20 to open the 2022 NFL season.

Blankenship missed a 42-yard game-winning field goal attempt for the Colts during overtime in Week 1. The Colts were frustrated with tying the Texans, who were one of the NFL’s worst teams in 2021.

Rodrigo Blankenship won a kicker competition for his job last season. The former Georgia standout has made 45 out of 54 kicks during his NFL career. Additionally, Blankenship has connected on 52 out of 55 extra points.

Blankenship made two of three field goals against the Texans, but that was not enough for the Colts, who will look elsewhere for a kicker. Blankenship, who missed much of last season with a hip injury, has made one field goal over 50 yards in his NFL career.

The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news.

Rodrigo Blankenship will likely get another opportunity in the NFL. He’s been counted out before.

The Colts signed a pair of kickers in a corresponding move.

Colts waive K Rodrigo Blankenship

The Colts are waiving Rodrigo Blankenship.

The Indianapolis Colts are waiving kicker Rodrigo Blankenship following a disappointing performance in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

While he made his first two field-goal attempts in Week 1, Blankenship had two consecutive kickoffs land out of bounds in high pressure moments and then missed the 42-yard attempt that would have won the game.

According to Pelissero, the Colts worked out a handful of kickers on Tuesday after evaluating, including two former Jacksonville Jaguars, and they plan to sign one or two of them for another competition.

Blankenship was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL draft and was the replacement for Adam Vinatieri after his retirement.

Over his career, Blankenship converted 83.3% of his field-goal attempts and 94.5% of his extra-point attempts. However, he converted just 1-of-4 attempts from more than 50 yards, and it was clear early in his career that his lack of range would limit him eventually.

The Colts haven’t figured out their kicker situation since Vinatieri retired, but now we’ll likely see a competition of sorts if they sign two kickers.

Colts work out kickers Josh Lambo, Matthew Wright

The Colts brought in a pair of kickers (and potentially more) for a workout Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts worked out free-agent kickers Josh Lambo and Matthew Wright on Tuesday, according to Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.

Following the rough opener for Rodrigo Blankenship, which included two kickoff out of bounds and a failed attempt on the winning field-goal, many have been calling for the Colts to replace the third-year kicker.

The Colts are likely going to hold a tryout for several kickers so this may not be the only group of players.

Lambo spent two years with the San Diego Chargers (2015-2016) and five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-2021). He has converted 89.7% of his field goals and 89.9% of his extra-point attempts.

Wright has played one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2020) and one with the Jaguars (2021). He has converted 89.3% of his field-goal attempts and 90.9% of his extra-point attempts.

It will be interesting to see if the Colts bring in any more kickers, and everyone will be watching to see what kind of decision they make.

Colts’ stock report from Week 1 tie with Texans

Here is the stock report from the Colts’ Week 1 tie.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-0-1) came away with a tie to begin the 2022 regular season in Week 1 against the Houston Texans (0-0-1) at NRG Stadium.

Between performance and usage, we can gather a lot of information about a player’s stock. While we know the stock for the big-name players like Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr., it’s the other pieces on the roster whose stock is likely to change the most throughout the season.

It’s important to remember that the stock report is fluid. A player whose stock fell in one week, can rise the following week, and vice versa. It’s more about spotting trends and potential for the future based on what we saw in the game that week.

Without further ado, here is the stock report following the Colts’ Week 1 tie with the Texans:
