Veteran Saints safety suspended three games for violating substance abuse policy

Veteran New Orleans Saints safety Roderic Teamer has been suspended three games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy:

Veteran New Orleans Saints safety Roderic Teamer has been suspended three games without pay for violating the NFL’s substances of abuse policy, the league announced Wednesday. Teamer was on the Saints practice squad and is eligible to be reinstated on Dec. 24, after their Week 16 game with the Green Bay Packers.

Teamer had only played on special teams in a couple of games earlier this season, but the Saints’ depth at safety had been questioned after a shoulder injury sidelined Tyrann Mathieu during Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Mathieu is expected to play in their upcoming game with the New York Giants but Teamer’s absence creates one less option to replace him if there’s a setback.

For now, the safeties on the 53-man roster include Mathieu, Will Harris, J.T. Gray, and Jordan Howden. Ugo Amadi has primarily manned the slot since Alontae Taylor moved outside at cornerback but he has experience working over the top, too.

Saints begin forming defensive backs room, release Roderic Teamer

The New Orleans Saints have begun shaping their defensive backs room, releasing veteran safety Roderic Teamer, a potential practice squad candidate:

The New Orleans Saints have begun their roster shuffle on cut-down day, with the deadline fast approaching, roster cuts will likely be coming in bulk at some point today. One of the first releases was former Las Vegas Raiders safety Roderic Teamer, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

The defensive back room was going to be extremely tough to crack in the first place, with Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan Howden, Johnathan Abram, and J.T. Gray being all locks or close to being so. On top of that, the cornerbacks room may warrant carrying an extra player with Rico Payton showing up so well in preseason.

Unfortunately, Roderic Teamer ended up being one of the odd-men out and was released to find a new team. Ultimately he may end up coming back as a practice squad player as well, as he had a quality preseason and was a good enough player to warrant taking another look long term as a depth piece in the secondary.

Countdown to Kickoff: Roderic Teamer is Saints Player of Day 30

Looking into safety Roderic Teamer, who wears the No. 30 jersey, with just 30 days ahead of the New Orleans Saints’ 2024 season kickoff:

The countdown to kickoff for the Saints’ 2024 regular season continues, now just 30 days out from the official opener. And, in recognition of that, we’re taking the time to highlight former Tulane defensive back Roderic Teamer. He currently wears the No. 30 jersey.

Here’s everything to know about the safety who took the field in college for the Green Wave, now continuing his professional career in the same city of New Orleans:

  • Name (Age): Roderic Teamer (27)
  • Position: Safety
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-0, 205 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 3.66
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $985,000
  • College: Tulane
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2019 (Los Angeles Chargers)
  • NFL experience: 5th season

Teamer went unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft, signed by the Los Angeles Chargers on April 27, 2019. He made his NFL debut on September 22, 2019 against the Houston Texans, recording seven tackles at the strong safety position.

He lasted just one season with the team, though, amassing 40 combined tackles (30 solo), two passes defended, one sack and an interception over six games.

Teamer has been something of a journeyman since then, making stops in with the Indianapolis Colts (2021) and the Las Vegas Raiders (2021-2023) before making his way to the Saints, who signed him on June 20.

He was waived by the Raiders, the team he was most recently with, on Nov. 27. This came just days after he was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and speeding on Nov. 25.

Teamer rejoins several of his former Raiders teammates with the move to New Orleans, including quarterback Derek Carr as well as tight end Foster Moreau, safety Johnathan Abram, defensive tackle Kendal Vickers, and offensive tackle Justin Herron, who is on injured reserve.

Over his career to this point, Teamer has totaled 103 tackles (72 solo), 3 passes defended, 1 sack and 1 interception over 40 games played.

It will be interesting to see what type of role he carves out with the Saints in his first season returning to the same state where it all started for him.

Former Raiders DB Roderic Teamer signs with Saints

Former Raiders DB Roderic Teamer signs with Saints

Back in 2021, Gus Bradley took over as Raiders defensive coordinator. He brought along with him a couple of his former players from his time with the Chargers. One of them was Roderic Teamer.

The DB and special teams ace had spent just one season in LA, all of which was on the practice squad. But his talents had him elevated to the active roster nine times that season. And when Bradley had the opportunity to get Teamer back, he did it.

Bradleys time with the Raiders lasted just one season. He left along with the rest of the Raiders staff under previous head coach Jon Gruden. But even with Bradley gone, Teamer stuck around.

Two more season Teamer played with the Raiders. Mostly for his standout special team work, but occasionally for his work as a versatile defensive back.

After three seasons in Las Vegas, Teamer was not re-signed this offseason and today he found a new home. The former New Orleans native has signed on with his hometown Saints.

Saints sign former Raiders, Tulane safety Roderic Teamer after minicamp tryout

The New Orleans Saints signed Roderic Teamer after a minicamp tryout. He’s a former Raiders safety who played well at Tulane and Brother Martin:

Here’s more depth at safety. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reported Thursday that the Saints were signing Roderic Teamer, an NFL veteran who tried out at last week’s mandatory minicamp.

A New Orleans native who starred at Brother Martin and Tulane before turning pro, Teamer’s pro career started with the Los Angeles Chargers. He spent some time with the Indianapolis Colts before teaming up with Derek Carr on the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, where they were teammates for a few years.

Teamer has logged a ton of snaps on special teams through four years in the NFL, working on both punts and kickoffs as well as the field goal blocking squad. Defensively, he’s recorded 966 snaps while lining up all over the field, including the slot. He only appeared in six games last season before being waived after a DUI arrest.

He’ll join a position group that’s a mile wide and an inch deep. After Tyrann Mathieu and second-year draft pick Jordan Howden the Saints have stacked up veterans like Johnathan Abram (who also played alongside Teamer on the Raiders) and Will Harris as well as their special teams captain J.T. Gray. Rookie safeties Lawrence Johnson and Millard Bradford are also in the mix.

They typically roster four with a fifth stashed on the practice squad, so there should be some heated competition at training camp this summer. Still, it’d be nice to add a high-end veteran to the mix like Justin Simmons, but there are probably a dozen other teams feeling the same way.

Raiders waive S Roderic Teamer following DUI arrest

Raiders waive S Roderic Teamer following DUI arrest

It’s been quite a last few days for Raiders safety Roderic Teamer. Saturday he was activated off of injured reserve. Early Sunday morning he was pulled over for speeding and subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI. Come game time Sunday, he was made inactive. Monday morning he was released.

“We decided to part ways,” interim head coach Antonio Pierce said of Teamer.

Pierce went on to talk about how this can act as a lesson for the rest of the team.

“Just making smart decisions,” Pierce added. “I think it goes for all of us. Ultimate respect for Teamer as a person. Got to know him well, had a lot of conversations with him. Wish him the best. Sometimes it’s the wrong timing. Bad timing. And this is one of those cases. We’ve decided to move forward. I think all our guys need to understand this; whatever you do, on and off the field affects the decisions that will be made in this building and we’re going to do the best to protect the brand and the shield and the Raiders organization.”

Teamer was in his third season with the Raiders, having been retained despite the firing of Gus Bradley who was his defensive coordinator with both the Chargers and the Raiders.

The reserve defensive back and special teams maven was placed on injured reserve on October 18 and missed five games before getting the nod to return on Saturday. Then he decided to get behind the wheel of a car drunk and got himself unemployed.

After weeks of practice squad elevations CB Tyler Hall finally signed to Raiders active roster

After weeks of practice squad elevations CB Tyler Hall finally signed to Raiders active roster

Today the Raiders made what seemed like an inevitable move — they signed cornerback Tyler Hall to the active roster.

It seemed like it was bound to happen simply because despite spending much of this season on the team’s practice squad, he was called up to the active roster the past three weeks and even started the past two games; both wins. Last week he played a career-high 46 snaps (77%).

Hall had appeared in seven of the team’s final eight games last season including three starts and showed up well. Not for nothing, the Raider have won four of his five starts.

The fourth year cornerback bided his time this season after being waived at the final cutdown and re-signing to the practice squad. Now after six weeks he is getting the call to officially sign onto the roster. I mean, he was pretty much already doing it anyway.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders placed DB Roderic Teamer on injured reserve. They replaced Hall’s spot on the practice squad by bringing back TE John Samuel-Shenker.

The team also brought back WR DJ Turner and CB Sam Webb onto the practice squad.

Raiders slow start to joint practices with Rams ‘unacceptable’ by their standards

Raiders first day of joint practices with Rams was ‘unacceptable’ by their standards (and pretty much any standard)

If the Raiders are to have a joint practice session with the Rams that looks anywhere near as good as the ones they had against the 49ers, they’re really going to have to pick it up. Because the first day was considerably disappointing by that standard.

Teams sessions were lacking on both sides of the ball for the Raiders.

Last week in joint practices, the story was interceptions. The Raiders had four in team sessions and another four in seven-on-sevens. Today the only turnover was an interception by Sam Webb off a deflection of a bad Stetson Bennett pass. A very similar play to the one Webb had in the game against the 49ers last Sunday from Brandon Allen.

But whenever Matt Stafford stepped on the field, he was carving up the Raiders secondary. It was pretty if you were the Rams offense. Not so much if you were the Raiders defense.

“As practice goes on, everybody’s watching the same thing that’s going on on the field. We can all feel it,” said safety Roderic Teamer. “We know as a team that we can perform better. And we always expect to dominate no matter what, so if we don’t do that then after practice we know we got more work to do.”

The Raiders’ battery is Maxx Crosby. He was not happy with what he saw at all.

“The standard is you show up and get better. For me as a leader it’s unacceptable,” said Crosby.

“Some days you’re going to feel like shit, some days you’re going to feel great. It is what it is. You got to get better and find ways to improve. Those are the days you get better; when you don’t feel like you want to go. When you’re feeling bad for yourself. That’s when you really got to go to that dark place. So, for me, no matter what it is, I’m trying to get to that place. No matter what and just bring my teammates with me.”

Late in practice, Maxx’s aggressive practice tendencies weren’t well received by Cam Akers. Akers lowered his helmet into him on a run, then Crosby chased Akers down and swatted the ball out of his hands. This led to a mad fury of Akers swinging on Crosby and the fight was on.

Said Crosby of the altercation “I was just doing what I do and he didn’t like that, so he got what he got. It is what it is.”

What Akers got was in a fight with a much bigger dude and then thrown out of practice for throwing the first punch, not to mention full on coming to blows.

For Maxx, it meant being relegated to the sideline for the rest of team sessions. He was replaced in the lineup by Jordan Willis.

And that was just the defense. The offense wasn’t exactly on point either.

It was good to see Davante Adams out there looking like 100% for the first time since he left practice with a right leg injury a week ago. And he did catch a few passes in team sessions.

But the drives rarely ended in a score and at the end of one session, several attempts at touchdowns fades — including to Adams — all ended with incompletions. Some were not on target, and some were knocked down by the DB. These same fades were successful against the 49ers last week.

“We have a lot to learn from the tape and that’s kind of the point of these,” said guard Greg Van Roten.

“You’re seeing a different front, different personnel, we’re running different plays than we have against a different team, so it’s kind of like this is what training camp is and this is what joint practice is for, it’s to get a different look and work on new techniques.”

Sunday’s hero in the preseason opener struggled as well. Aidan O’Connell came in at QB to close out practice with a drive in which he completed just one pass. All others were either dropped, defended, or off target.

Clearly, the Raiders will have to regroup, study the tape from today, and put in the work to try and put together a better practice tomorrow. It’s their final joint practice, and if last preseason is any indication, many starters’ last chance to go against an opponent prior to the start of the regular season.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 1 vs 49ers

Your Ballers & Busters for Raiders preseason preseason opener

Sunday the Raiders took the field for the first time since the end of last season. And just as they did last preseason, there wasn’t much in the way of starters on the field.

Yeah, unlike years ago when the starters would at least play a series in the opener, these days they don’t see the field at all, making the preseason games all about the hopefuls proving themselves to try and earn a roster spot.

With that in mind, here are the standouts among those who took the field against the 49ers.

Ballers

QB Aidan O’Connell

The rookie balled out for three quarters. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. And two of his three incompletions were drops. Very impressive first impression for the fourth round pick out of Purdue.

DE Jordan Willis, DE Isaac Rochell

The two of them shared a sack on third down to force the 49ers into a three-and-out to open the game. And then they were both forces on the outside the rest of their time on the field.

Willis had a pressure on the next drive that also resulted in a three-and-out and then Rochell had a pressure that helped lead to a sack on the 49ers third consecutive three-and-out to start the game.

Willis ended consecutive drives to end the first half. With a run stuff for no gain on 4th down and then a QB hit that resulted in a bad pass to send the two teams to the locker room with the Raiders holding a 14-7 lead.

The first 49ers possession of the third quarter had Rochell wreaking havoc on them. He got in the backfield to disrupt the play on a one yard run, then had two run stuffs for no gain.

TE Cole Fotheringham

Fotheringham was all over the place. First and foremost, he was the team’s leading receiver with 71 yards on five catches. Knowing that his best chance of making the roster will be with his special teams work, he had a tackle on a punt return as well. And for good measure, he had a couple of run blocks that led to good yardage too.

LB Curtis Bolton

The first tackle of the game was Bolton on the opening kickoff. Late in the third quarter, he came in at linebacker and made a impact there too. He laid the hit that forced the fumble for the Raiders’ first takeaway of the day. Then he ended Sam Darnold’s day with a couple blitzes that both led to incompletions and a 58-yard field goal attempt that missed wide right.

DT Neil Farrell Jr

With the score still tied at seven apiece late in the second quarter, the 49ers lined up to go for it on fourth and one. Jordan Willis would get the run stuff at the line, but it was Farrell who filled the gap to make it possible. Farrell was there again on fourth and one early in the third quarter to stuff Sam Darnold on his QB sneak attempt for another turnover on downs.

DT Adam Butler

On consecutive plays late in the first quarter, Butler got into the 49ers backfield. The first time, Trey Lance managed to escape, though he was only able to scramble for two yards. The next play Butler got pressure again, this time he wrapped up Lance for the sack. Butler later had a run stop as well.

S Roderic Teamer

As Roderic “Special” Teamer is want to do, he made a play as a gunner on special teams, stopping the return man for no gain at the 14-yard-line. He also had a couple assisted tackles in the pass game as well as the run game.

Honorable Mention

CB Sam Webb — Was in the right place when his receiver couldn’t get ahold of a pass and he picked it off and returned it to the two-yard-line.

RB Sincere McCormick — had two touchdowns in the game; one on the ground and one through, both from two yards out.

LB Amari Burney — Had a pursuit sack and made a great read on a pass over the middle to nearly pick it off.

Raiders sign two to exclusive rights free agent tenders

Two exclusive rights free agents get tendered by Raiders

As players arrived for the first day of the Raiders offseason program, the team took care of some business. Along with adding free agent edge rusher Tashawn Bowers, the Raiders brought back a couple of their own by signing the tenders of Exclusive Rights Free Agent DB Roderic Teamer as well as TE Nick Bowers.

Teamer joined the Raiders last offseason, coming over from the Chargers. He would appear in ten games, starting the final two games as well as the team’s wild card playoff game at safety due in part to the injury to Johnathan Abram.

Bowers signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State prior to the start of the 2020 season. After spending the entire 2020 season on the team’s practice squad, Bowers was called up to the active roster five times last season, seeing a total of 40 snaps on offense and 39 snaps on special teams. He has yet to record a statistic of any kind.
