Robert Turbin: Seahawks have best wide receiver trio in the NFL

Watch Turbo pound the table for the Seahawks’ trio of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon-Smith Njigba as being the best in all of football.

The Seattle Seahawks have one of, if not the best wide receiver room in the league right now. However, if you were following our recent top-64 NFL wide receiver rankings closely, you noticed that there are several other teams who also have excellent 1-2-3 combos at this position. While the Cincinnati Bengals, the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers all have three strong options, our money is on Seattle. It seems former running back Robert Turbin agrees.

Robert Turbin was ‘really shocked’ the Seahawks let Pete Carroll go

Here’s former running back Robert Turbin admitting he was shocked by the news.

It’s a new week, a new year and what feels like a strange new world for the Seattle Seahawks and their fans. Five days ago the team made the most-surprising decision in franchise history, removing Pete Carroll as their head coach after a successful 14-year run, including 10 playoff appearances, two trips to the Super Bowl and one win.

You can tell how stunning the news was to the locker room based on the players’ reactions – of which there are practically none to be found. Geno Smith, Bobby Wagner and a couple other players were present at Carroll’s final press conference. However, we have heard nothing from current players on social media about Carroll’s exit – an ominous sign for whoever may be coming in to replace him and all the more reason they should be targeting a big name like Bill Belichick.

So far, we’ve had to rely on takes from former players, many of whom have shared their appreciation for Carroll. Here’s former running back Robert Turbin admitting he was shocked by the news.

Robert Turbin shares his top-5 NFL running backs going into 2022

Robert Turbin shares his top-5 NFL running backs going into 2022

The Seahawks should have one of the best running back rooms in the NFL this season. Even if Rashaad Penny regresses and Chris Carson can’t play, they got one of the top prospects at this position in the draft in Ken Walker.

Former Seattle running back Robert Turbin recently started working for NFL Network. Yesterday, he shared his top five running backs in the league going into the 2022 season:

We won’t argue the top four names here or their order. Aaron Jones at No. 5 seems a little bit high, though. If Penny picks up where he left off in 2021 we believe he should be probably placed in that fifth spot just under Dalvin Cook. For what it’s worth, PFF ranked him No. 12.

Assuming both Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara are healthy then they should also be ahead of Jones. Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard would round out our top 10 RBs.

Robert Turbin: Jimmy Garoppolo gives 49ers ‘best chance to win’

Robert Turbin: Jimmy Garoppolo gives 49ers best chance to win

Former Seahawks running back Robert Turbin was once the main backup behind Marshawn Lynch when he was in his prime. Having Turbin at No. 2 made for a solid thunder-and-more-thunder kind of duo for Seattle.

Turbin is trying out a new career path, though. He made his debut as an analyst on NFL Network yesterday and shared his thoughts on the man of the hour: 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Yesterday, ESPN reported that the Seahawks have had internal discussions about trading for Garoppolo – making him the latest in a long line of QBs to be connected with Seattle this offseason since the Russell Wilson trade.

In a vaccuum, Garoppolo would make a lot of sense to run this offense. There are several obstacles to the two sides coming together, though – not the least of which is that he plays for another team that also happens to be Seattle’s most-bitter division rival. Garoppolo also has a burdensome contract with a cap hit around $27 million this year, a recent shoulder surgery, a turnover problem and a history of shrinking in big games.

All that being said, he might be the best option either team has to start in the 2022 season. Turbin for one says he gives the 49ers the best chance to win.

On that point we agree. However, it makes more sense for San Francisco to give the reins over to Trey Lance and see what he can do as a starter at this point in his development. If he’s not ready they’ll find out fast, but Garoppolo isn’t going to be around next year in any case.

One possible wild card to keep an eye on is Cleveland, where Deshaun Watson maybe suspended idefinitely, possibly for the entire 2022 NFL season. If that happens, then the Browns would make the most sense as a potential Garoppolo trade destination – especially since they actually have the cap room to fit him.

We can go in circles about the relative pros and cons of acquiring Garoppolo for a long time. Right now it seems like a very unlikely development. Unless and until the 49ers release Garoppolo from his current contract, Seattle should make other plans.

Pete Carroll provides updates on Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he has stayed in contact with RB’s Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny, and their rehab is going well.

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll held a zoom press conference on Wednesday afternoon, addressing some of the trials of trying to prepare for an NFL draft and run a football team during this global pandemic.

Carroll was asked about keeping tabs on Seattle’s two running backs, Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny, who suffered season-ending injuries near the end of the 2019 campaign.

“You know, our staff has been staying in touch with those guys,” Carroll responded. “I’ve communicated with those guys throughout. Just checking in on them, the normal process. They are in their programs and working really hard and doing really well as far as we can monitor. So we are making the kind of progress that we need to make, really, across the board. Our staff is able to stay in touch with those guys and there are some guys here staying fit in our own facility; the league allows that to happen, but for the guys remote — we just keep track and seems like everything is going really well as far as we can tell and we’re pleased so far.”

Carson (hip) was injured against the Cardinals in Week 16, while Penny suffered an ACL tear in Week 14 against the Rams.

The pair of injuries forced the Seahawks to sign Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin off the street, and Lynch carried Seattle into the playoffs with four touchdowns in three games.

Carson is further along in his recovery than Penny, who Carroll anticipates might be placed on the PUP list during training camp.

Regardless, both are expected to be ready to play when the season kicks off in September, and Carroll’s words on Wednesday only further emphasize that timeline.

Seattle Seahawks 2020 free agent profile: Running back Robert Turbin

Will the Seattle Seahawks bring back Robert Turbin as a third down back again in 2020, or has he reached the end of the line?

*The Seattle Seahawks are heading into the 2020 offseason with 19 players set to become unrestricted free agents, which should make for another busy spring and summer for Pete Carroll and John Schneider as they look to shore up the roster and contend for the number one seed in the NFC again next year.*

Our Seahawks Wire series on Seattle’s free agents continues with running back Robert Turbin.

The Seahawks improbably lost the top three running backs on their depth chart – Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny and C.J. Prosise – to season-ending injuries in late December, prompting the team to take drastic action.

Seattle signed two familiar faces, Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin, off the street to suit up for the team’s final regular-season game and both playoff appearances.

While Lynch drew most of the attention and playing time, Turbin did contribute a tiny bit in a Prosise-esque role. He saw 13 total snaps on special teams but just two on offense, without receiving a single carry or target.

Turbin was Lynch’s backup from 2012-2014, often serving as a third-down slash change of pace back for the Seahawks.

While Prosise, Seattle’s current third-down back, is potentially going to leave via free agency, it doesn’t seem like Turbin will be brought back in that role, with Travis Homer likely taking over instead.

Coming off a season where he was unsigned until Christmas Eve and only appeared in two games in 2018, it seems plausible that Turbin has reached the end of his playing career.

Seahawks expected to rotate all 3 running backs in Green Bay

The Seahawks will turn to all three of their running backs in Green Bay on Sunday and could utilize Marshawn Lynch in a more expanded role.

The Seattle Seahawks took some serious hits to their run game this season, losing three running backs to injuries. Rashaad Penny was the first to fall, followed by starter Chris Carson and C.J. Prosise near the end of the year.

With only rookie Travis Homer left on the roster, Seattle rallied quickly to sign two former teammates – Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin. While both have gotten limited play so far, the Seahawks are likely to incorporate all three of the backs more into the rotation this Sunday.

“People know that we are going to do different things other than just to hand the ball to Marshawn,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday. “But to see him get the ball out in space on the perimeter was cool. You’ll see him play more. Travis certainly will play. Turbo will play, it was good to get him in there as well.”

Schottenheimer was asked whether or not he had a specific game plan or snap counts in mind for each of the players.

“Is there a number?” Schottenheimer replied. “No, we’ll just see how the game goes.”

After bouncing back so quickly following each of his outings, coach Pete Carroll did say fans can expect to see Lynch in more of an expanded role.

“That’s a wonderful thought, isn’t it? Just get to see Marshawn more,” Carroll quipped Wednesday. “Well, he’s had a couple weeks under his belt. He made it through clean. He feels fine physically, so he’s just more available to us for more opportunities. That’s all.”

But with “unfinished business” still on his mind, you can bet Lynch will be all about that action, boss.

Seahawks running back Chris Carson (hip) does not need surgery

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson does not need surgery on his hip, and is expected back and 100 percent healthy by training camp.

The Seattle Seahawks got some good news for the 2020 season on Wednesday when coach Pete Carroll reported that star running back Chris Carson will not need surgery on his hip, and he shouldn’t have any problem reporting to training camp next summer.

“It’s still quite an extensive recovery, but he has no surgery and he doesn’t have to undergo any of those issues and he was really thrilled about that,” Carroll said on Wednesday. “So the recovery will be as quick as possible. He was really of good attitude about it. He’s a great worker we won’t have any problem expecting him to come back.”

Carson suffered the injury in Week 16’s loss to the Cardinals. His injury coincided with C.J. Prosise’s broken arm, and with Rashaad Penny (ACL) already on the shelf, Seattle turned to the free agent market to sign veterans Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin.

Carson finished the 2019 season with career highs in carries (278) yards (1,230) as well as seven touchdowns. He also took on a bigger role in the receiving game, hauling in 37 receptions for 266 yards and another two scores.

His presence was a crucial part of Seattle’s success in 2019, and he will be a big part of their team again in 2020 after he gets healthy.
