Despite position change, N’Keal Harry has a chance to be cut

Minnesota Vikings tight end N’Keal Harry is a prime candidate to be cut before the start of the season according to PFN’s Dakota Randall.

Training camp and the preseason are the time for both youngsters and veterans to make their marks with their teams and prove they belong. Some of those players are trying to do so while learning new positions — like Minnesota Vikings tight end N’Keal Harry.

Unfortunately, not all of those players can make rosters, and one media outlet sees Harry as a prime candidate to be cut before the season starts. Pro Football Network’s Dakota Randall looked around the league and identified one player from each who could be cut before the season starts.

Every team will have to reduce rosters to 53 before the start of the season, so many players are prime candidates for the waiver wire. For Minnesota, Harry jumps out to Randall as the most obvious candidate.

An infamous draft bust, N’Keal Harry now is trying to learn tight end after failing as a receiver. He has the size to play the position, but if he doesn’t show well in camp, he likely will be cut before landing on a practice squad to refine his tight end skills.

If there’s a glimmer of optimism in Harry’s situation, it’s that the Vikings are relatively thin at the position — at least when it comes to playmakers. Veteran T.J. Hockenson is likely to start the season on the PUP list, and the receiving options behind him are limited.

Minnesota brought in former Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears tight end Robert Tonyan to help fill the void in Hockenson’s absence, and he’ll likely be the starter if Hockenson isn’t ready to go to start the season. Behind Tonyan, there’s Josh Oliver, who is on the team more for his blocking prowess than his receiving ability.

That leaves Harry to battle for TE4 with Johnny Mundt and Nick Muse — provided the Vikings even keep four tight ends on the final roster, which isn’t a given. Harry is likely on the outside looking in to make the team, even with the absence of Hockenson.

Do the Minnesota Vikings have a problem at WR3?

Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison are firmly planted as the Minnesota Vikings’ top two wide receivers, but do they have a reliable WR3?

The Minnesota Vikings just secured superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson to a long-term deal. Jefferson has been arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL since he came into the league, and has put up incredible numbers for the Vikings. Opposite him, they have Jordan Addison, who had one of the better rookie seasons in recent memory, tallying 900+ yards and finishing third in the league in touchdowns.

They’re a duo that has the potential to be one of the best tandems in the entire NFL. But what about the rest of the wide receiver room? Do the Vikings have a problem at the WR3 spot? If the early indications from The Athletic’s Vikings beat reporter Alec Lewis are to be believed, all signs point to yes.

It may seem a bit dramatic to worry about WR3 on a team that has Justin Jefferson and a burgeoning young receiver in Addison, but when you really look at it, the Vikings are likely going to need someone else to step up and provide some production. Who, and do they have anyone else in the room who can be relied upon to take the leap?

Jefferson will be the main focus of defensive game plans every week of the season. The defensive coordinator’s first priority will be to try to slow him down. They will know that the Vikings are adjusting to a new quarterback—whether that be Sam Darnold or J.J. McCarthy—and that quarterback is likely going to lean heavily on Jefferson. That should open up opportunities for Addison, but who else on the team can step up?

The obvious answer would be T.J. Hockenson at the tight end spot, but he’ll likely miss the first six weeks of the season as he recovers from the knee injury he suffered against Detroit toward the end of the 2023 season.

Adding Aaron Jones and his receiving abilities out of the backfield will help mitigate the need for a dependable WR3, but it won’t fully negate it. So what does the situation look like right now? It would not be great if Lewis were to be believed.

According to Lewis, who recently published quick minicamp notes on all 90 players currently on the Vikings roster for The Athletic, it would seem like Brandon Powell has the inside track to be the team’s WR3, but Lewis questions if he’s a true WR3, and if he does take that spot, will he also be on the team’s punt and kick return teams? And if not, who takes that spot?

Beyond Powell, there are a lot of question marks. Lewis points to Jalen Nailor and Trishton Jackson as being “intriguing” options and the “equivalent of a AAAA baseball prospect” in the case of Jackson. However, he’s quick to point out that both of them have significant injury concerns and have struggled to stay healthy in their careers.

Former Bills, Dolphins, and 49ers wide receiver Trent Sherfield was brought in by the Vikings in the off-season to provide the team with a different type of receiver than what they currently have.

Both Jefferson and Addison win with quickness and savvy route-running, whereas Sherfield can provide the team with a big-bodied receiver for those 50/50 balls. But Lewis points out that Sherfield isn’t “fleet of foot” and “it’s hard to see him sliding into the No.3 receiver role”.

Behind Sherfield, there are a bunch of players (Lucky Jackson, Malik Knowles, Ty James, Thayer Thomas, and Jeshaun Jones) who are fighting for back-end roster spots or spots on the practice squad. Which leaves Minnesota with the question: Who steps up as the third wide receiver in the offense? Who can be that reliable third option if Jefferson and Addison are shut down?

We’re likely going to have to wait until at least pre-season before we have our answer, but the answer may wind up being former Packers and Bears tight end Robert Tonyan, who was brought in this offseason and will likely be the team’s top tight end while Hockenson is unavailable. And that could present the Vikings offense with a big problem.

Former Packers TE Robert Tonyan signing with Vikings

Former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan is signing with the Vikings.

Former Green Bay Packers tight end Robert Tonyan is signing with the Minnesota Vikings after spending last season with the Chicago Bears, the Vikings announced Thursday. Tonyan entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions, so Tonyan has officially been on the roster of all four teams in the NFC North.

In Minnesota, Tonyan will join T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt and Nick Muse in the Vikings tight end room.

Tonyan played five seasons with the Packers between 2018 and 2022. He caught 137 passes for 1,437 yards and 17 touchdowns across 68 games for the Packers. In 2020, Tonyan had 52 catches for 586 yards and 10 scores during a breakout season as the Packers top tight end.

He signed with the Bears in 2023 and caught only 11 passes on 17 targets for 112 yards in 17 games.

Tonyan spent four months during the offseason with the Lions in 2017. He was released before the regular season and eventually signed to the Packers practice squad in December of 2017.

Tonyan turned 30 years old in April.

Vikings sign former Packers TE Robert Tonyan

The Minnesota Vikings signed former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan on Thursday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Minnesota Vikings signed former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan on Thursday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The veteran tight end joins a loaded Vikings tight end room to compete for a role within the Minnesota offense.

The team waived Donovan Manuel as a corresponding move to make room for Tonyan on the roster.

Robert Tonyan is entering his seventh season with the NFL after going undrafted out of Indiana State in 2017. He has accumulated 1,549 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on 148 receptions in 85 career games. The signing with the Vikings completes the NFC North roster collection for Tonyan as he has played with the Lions and Bears as well.

As mentioned, Tonyan joins a tight end group led by T.J. Hockenson, another NFC North veteran, and five other tight ends. He is the second tight end to sign with the team in the last week after the team added Sammis Reyes through the International Player Pathway.

At the time of the signing, contract details had not been made public yet.

Bleacher Report names 3 realistic free-agent targets for the Panthers

Bleacher Report’s scouting department listed three realistic free-agent options for the Panthers following the 2024 draft.

Even after what’s been a very busy offseason, the Carolina Panthers may not be done reconstructing their roster.

Bleacher Report’s scouting department recently ran down every NFL team’s biggest needs coming out of the 2024 draft. And while the Panthers got themselves a steal in the fourth round with University of Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, Robert Tonyan is listed as one of three realistic free-agent targets moving forward:

The Panthers still have questions at tight end, though, and taking a flier on Robert Tonyan Jr. would sense. Tonyan had a couple of productive years with the Green Bay Packers before largely disappearing in the Chicago Bears offense last season. He could provide competition for fourth-round rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders and shouldn’t drain Carolina’s limited remaining cap resources.

Tonyan’s best season for the Packers came in 2020, when he recorded career-highs in receiving yards (586) and touchdowns (11). But 2023—where he amassed just 11 catches for 112 yards and no scores—wouldn’t be nearly as kind.

The Panthers could also use some extra juice off the edge and at the cornerback position. So, veterans Markus Golden and Stephon Gilmore were also noted:

Defensively, the Panthers need to find more pieces to replace the production of Brian Burns, who was traded early in the offseason. Jadeveon Clowney will help, but consistency has never been his biggest asset.

Markus Golden, who produced four sacks with the Steelers last season, is another potential bargain option to consider.

In the trade to acquire Johnson from Pittsburgh, Carolina parted with cornerback Donte Jackson. The Panthers should keep pushing to bring back Stephon Gilmore as a replacement.

Gilmore, who has been connected to Carolina over the last month or so, recently told league insider Josina Anderson that he’s waiting for the right opportunity to find his next landing spot.

5 Bears-Packers connections ahead of Week 1 matchup

There are a number of former Packers now playing on the Bears.

The Chicago Bears will kick off the 2023 NFL season against the rival Green Bay Packers today at Soldier Field.

It’s a new chapter in the NFL’s oldest rivalry, following the departure of Aaron Rodgers. Now, it’ll be Jordan Love taking the reins, where he’ll battle the likes of Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Chicago is looking to snap an eight-game losing streak against their rivals, with their last victory coming in Dec. 2018.

When the Bears and Packers face off, there will be plenty of familiar faces. Between the two teams, there are some player and coach connections. Let’s take a look:

Bears TE Robert Tonyan now questionable for Sunday’s game vs. Packers

The Bears added Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue and announced a few roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Chicago Bears were set to enter their Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers with essentially a healthy roster, but now they could be without one of their tight ends. On Saturday, the Bears added Robert Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue, and he is now questionable to play. He practiced in full all week and had no injury designation up to this point.

Tonyan was signed as a free agent this offseason after spending six years with the Packers. He was set to face his former team for the first time, but that is now in jeopardy. His status for the game will be announced no later than 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

With Tonyan landing on the injury report, the Bears elevated tight end Stephen Carlson, as well as linebacker DeMarquis Gates, from the practice squad. They also released linebacker Dylan Cole, who was the lone player with an injury designation on Friday.

Carlson saw the most action of any Bears tight end this preseason but hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2020 due to injuries. Gates, meanwhile, played in three games for the Bears last season, totaling one tackle.

5 Bold predictions for Bears vs. Packers

D.J. Moore snapping the 100-yard receiving drought & Tyrique Stevenson getting his first pick are just a few of our Bears bold predictions.

There’s rarely any shortage of drama, big plays, or juice when it comes to the Chicago Bears taking on the Green Bay Packers. Even over the past decade, when the historic rivalry has been one-sided, big moments and incredible plays (both good and bad) have been prevalent. But now as Green Bay turns the page to the Jordan Love era while Chicago continues developing Justin Fields, those moments will still remain and perhaps even favor the Bears for the first time in years.

The Bears and Packers are set to square off to open the 2023 NFL season on Sunday at Soldier Field, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what we’re going to see when the ball is finally kicked off. But we’re doing our best to predict the big moments and performances that will take place.

Our weekly bold predictions series returns for the start of the regular season, and we’re feeling optimistic about those moments and performances going the Bears way this weekend.

8 Bears players to watch in preseason finale vs. Bills

Here are eight players we’ll be watching for when the Bears take on the Bills in Saturday’s preseason finale.

Just as quickly as it started, the 2023 NFL preseason finale is already here for the Chicago Bears, meaning the regular season isn’t far away. The Bears take on the Buffalo Bills on Saturday at noon CT at Soldier Field in a game that will serve as a tune-up for both teams.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus announced that the starters on offense and defense who are healthy will see action, including Justin Fields. Head coach Sean McDermott of the Bills is doing the same with his team before giving way to the reserves.

Saturday’s contest will be the final chance for many players to make their case for why they deserve a spot on the final roster. But it’s also an opportunity to see the starters get game action since most of them sat out last week’s preseason game against the Colts. Here are eight players to keep an eye on when the Bears and Bills kick off.
