Dolphins add OT Jackson Carman to practice squad, cut ties with Robbie Chosen

The Dolphins added a former second-round pick to the mix on the offensive line.

The Miami Dolphins added offensive tackle Jackson Carman to their practice squad Tuesday and cut ties with veteran wide receiver Robbie Chosen to make room.

Carman, 24, was picked in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and spent the first three seasons of his career with the team. The Bengals waived Carman in August.

The Clemson alum made six starts as a rookie, but appeared in only five regular season games in the last two years. However, he was called into action during the Bengals’ postseason run in 2022 when Jonah Williams dealt with an injury and made two starts at left tackle.

Chosen, 31, spent the 2023 season with the Dolphins and reunited with the franchise last month after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers. With several injuries at the wide receiver position, Chosen was elevated to the active roster for each of the Dolphins’ first two games. He caught only one pass for five yards on four targets.

Dolphins elevate WR Robbie Chosen to active roster again

For the second time in as many games, the Dolphins have elevated Robbie Chosen from the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins elevated veteran wide receiver Robbie Chosen to the active roster for a Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills, the team announced Thursday afternoon.

It’s the second time in as many weeks that Chosen has been moved up to be made available while the Dolphins are struggling with injuries at the wide receiver position. Fourth-round rookie Malik Washington is nursing a quad injury that has kept him out for the first two weeks, Odell Beckham Jr. is on the PUP list, and River Cracraft is on the injured reserve.

Chosen, 31, played 12 offensive snaps in the Dolphins’ Week 1 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but wasn’t targeted at all by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins are able to elevate any player as many as three times from the practice squad. After that, the player must be moved to the 53-man roster to be available to play. Miami can move Chosen up one more time after Thursday before it’ll be forced to use a roster spot if it hopes to have the veteran receiver make another appearance.

Chosen, who recorded 1,096 receiving yards during his 2020 season with the Carolina Panthers, spent much of 2023 with the Dolphins. In nine games with Miami, Chosen caught four passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Dolphins elevate WR Robbie Chosen to active roster for Week 1

The Dolphins bumped a veteran receiver up to the active roster for their Week 1 matchup against the Jaguars.

The Miami Dolphins elevated wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad to the active roster for a Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chosen, 31, spent the 2023 season with the Dolphins, bouncing on and off the team’s practice squad. He appeared in nine games and caught four passes for 126 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown reception early in the year.

After spending a couple weeks in training camp with the San Francisco 49ers, Chosen was added to the Dolphins’ practice squad at the end of August.

NFL teams are allowed to temporarily elevate a player to the active roster a maximum of three times. If the Dolphins move Chosen up two more times after Sunday, they’ll need to pull him off the practice squad permanently to make him available on game days.

The elevation of Chosen isn’t surprising after rookie receiver Malik Washington was ruled out by the team Friday due to a quad injury. The only other receivers currently on the active roster are Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, and recently acquired Grant DuBose.

NFL analyst predicts new career high for Sam Darnold in 2024

Can Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold do something in 2024 he’s never done before and pass for 4,000 yards? One analyst thinks so.

Throwing for 4,000 yards in a season has become somewhat of a standard benchmark for “good” quarterback play in the NFL. Since 2020, at least nine quarterbacks have reached that mark in every season, with 12 quarterbacks surpassing 4,000 yards last season.

New Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was not one of those quarterbacks in either instance. In fact, Darnold has never come close to reaching the 4,000-yard mark in a season, with his career-best total coming as a member of the New York Jets in his second season. That year was Darnold’s best as a professional. He set career highs in every major statistical category, including throwing for 3,024 yards and 19 touchdowns.

That season, Darnold was throwing passes to the likes of Jamison Crowder and Robbie Chosen (then Robbie Anderson) and did so with head coach Adam Gase running the Jets offense. Suffice it to say that Darnold has some significantly better circumstances coming into this season.

Those improved circumstances have Pro Football Network analyst Mike Wobschall predicting a career year for the new Vikings starting quarterback.

Darnold has had some famous struggles during his career and is widely considered a draft bust after being chosen third overall by the Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, he’s now stepping into a role as a veteran quarterback with arguably the league’s best wide receiver in Justin Jefferson, one of the best receiving running backs in the league in Aaron Jones, and a head coach, Kevin O’Connell, who got the most out of journeyman quarterbacks Josh Dobbs and Nick Mullens last season.

O’Connell’s system and coaching are very quarterback-friendly, and the supporting cast around Darnold is easily the best of his career. If Darnold is able to stay healthy for the entire season, and his flaws are kept mostly in check, Darnold should be able to comfortably reach this milestone.

Dolphins sign Robbie Chosen, 3 others to practice squad

The Dolphins now have 13 players on their practice squad after adding four veterans Thursday.

The Miami Dolphins added four veterans to their practice squad Thursday, including wide receiver Robbie Chosen who spent 2023 with the team.

Along with Chosen, the Dolphins added quarterback Tim Boyle, wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge, and defensive tackle Naquan Jones. Miami also released running back Anthony McFarland Jr., who was one of 10 players signed to the Dolphins practice squad Wednesday.

Following the transactions, the Dolphins have 13 players on the practice squad with room to add four more (Bayron Matos doesn’t count against the 16 player limit due to the International Pathway Program).

Chosen, 31, caught four passes for 126 yards and a touchdown during his time with the Dolphins last season and has 5,082 career receiving yards with 30 touchdowns. He spent training camp with the San Francisco 49ers, but was released earlier this week.

Boyle, 29, has spent time with five teams and has made five career starts, including a game last year against the Dolphins.

Eskridge, 27, spent the last three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks after joining the team as a second-round pick in 2021. He has 17 career receptions for 122 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Jones, 26, has made stops with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals with appearances in 36 games. He has 3.5 career sacks and seven tackles for loss.

49ers sign WR, release another WR after 1st preseason game

The 49ers have waived a WR and signed another one.

The San Francisco 49ers are banged up, and they’re bringing in reinforcements.

Injuries have gotten so bad for San Francisco that they were forced to cancel their upcoming joint practices with the New Orleans Saints. On Monday they officially announced the signing of wide receiver Robbie Chosen. In a corresponding move they waived WR Frank Darby with an injury designation.

Chosen has been in the NFL since 2016 when he was an undrafted rookie with the New York Jets. In 120 games across his eight seasons he has 379 catches for 5,082 yards and 30 touchdowns.

He doesn’t figure to be much of a factor in the 49ers’ final receiving corps. He’s played in 25 games with seven starts the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins. In those 25 games he has 24 catches for 408 yards and two touchdowns.

Chosen should get plenty of playing time in the preseason, however. WRs Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings aren’t likely to play much. WR Brandon Aiyuk still hasn’t suited up for camp, and WR Ricky Pearsall is dealing with an injury.

Darby was added by the 49ers due to injury problems at wide receiver, and he made it through a couple weeks before being let go. In their preseason opener, Darby had one catch for 33 yards. It was an impressive play where he made a catch over the middle and created yards after the catch.

By waiving Darby with an injury designation, he’ll revert to the 49ers’ IR if he clears waivers.

Grading the Dolphins wide receivers after their 2023 season

A look at Miami’s wideouts, and the year they had in 2023.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the wide receivers.

Dolphins WR Robbie Chosen exits with injury vs. Cowboys

Miami loses a depth wideout.

Down 7-3 in the first quarter to the Dallas Cowboys, the Miami Dolphins got some momentum off of back-to-back receptions by Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Robbie Chosen.

However, on Chosen’s reception, his helmet bounced off of the ground, causing him to get up slowly. He was helped off of the field and needed to be evaluated.

After the play, the team announced that Chosen is being evaluated for a concussion.

Chosen may not be a top option in Miami, he can still take advantage of some of the matchups he’ll draw against the Cowboys with Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill getting most of the attention.

UPDATE: Chosen has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Dolphins make a trio of roster moves on Tuesday

One goes to IR, one signs with the 53 and one signs with the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins continue to get bit by the injury bug throughout their 2023 campaign.

On Tuesday, they placed running back Salvon Ahmed on injured reserve after he suffered a foot injury during Miami’s battle with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

He’ll now have to miss at least four games before he returns, and the Dolphins are running out of designations.

That leaves just Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. as the lone healthy backs on the active roster, with De’Von Achane also dealing with a knee issue.

To replace Ahmed on the 53-man roster, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen from their own practice squad. He was elevated for the second time this year last week and recorded two receptions for 39 yards.

That move left an open spot on the practice squad, which Miami has filled by signing running back Darrynton Evans. That name may seem familiar, and that would be because he was with the team earlier this year before he was signed to the Chicago Bears active roster.

If the Dolphins only have Mostert and Wilson going into Friday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Evans get an elevation.

Dolphins swap practice squad players, elevated two to the active roster

Miami makes multiple practice squad moves on Saturday.

The Miami Dolphins, prior to their Week 11 battle with the Las Vegas Raiders announced a number of moves regarding their practice squad.

Running back Jake Funk was released from the practice squad. He was signed by Miami last month, but he was never elevated to the active roster. With De’Von Achane coming back from injured reserve, they don’t necessarily need the depth at the position.

To fill his spot, the Dolphins have signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen, who they released from the 53-man roster to make room for Achane.

For the game against the Raiders, the Dolphins have elevated Chosen and offensive lineman Chasen Hines.

This is Chosen’s second elevation this season after being brought up for the Week 3 battle with the Denver Broncos. In that game, he hauled in a long touchdown from backup quarterback Mike White.

This is Hines’ first elevation since joining Miami’s practice squad after roster cuts. He was originally a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots after a collegiate career at LSU. He hasn’t played a snap in the NFL yet, but during his time at LSU, he started 16 games at right guard and one at left guard.

With the Dolphins starting two backup guards and being without one depth guard in Robert Jones, Hines could be thrust into playing time if Liam Eichenberg or Lester Cotton were to go down.
