2023 Recruiting Profile: Will 5-star OL Francis Mauigoa stay in Florida?

Five-star offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa keeps coming back to Florida and Billy Napier’s staff keeps impressing him. Could the blue-chip recruit wind up a Gator?

Florida’s new head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] broke the IMG Academy curse almost immediately after taking over at UF by landing five-star safety [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag] out of the Bradenton powerhouse. He’s added four-star interior offensive lineman [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag], but one of the biggest targets Florida has out of IMG is five-star [autotag]Francis Mauigoa[/autotag].

At worse, he’s a top-25 prospect and his ceiling is being the best offensive lineman to come out of the class. It’ll take a lot of work to get there, but Mauigoa plans on making it to the NFL so he can return home to American Samoa and share his success.

Mauigoa has kept a steady line of communication with the Gators over the last year or so. Offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] have taken the lead and the rest of the staff has gotten to know him as well after several visits to the Swamp.

His most recent trip on June 14, which was one of his five official visits, was the best one yet. He’s developing relationships with players and coaches alike and Florida seems well-positioned to stay near the top of his recruitment down the stretch.

Gators set to host 4-star OL on official visit following successful return visit

Billy Napier’s staff is doing a good job staying near the top of four-star offensive lineman Roderick Kearney’s recruitment. An official visit should only help things.

Four-star in-state offensive lineman [autotag]Roderick Kearney[/autotag] is coming off a two-day visit to the University of Florida. He enjoyed his first visit to the Swamp back in spring and left town with similar emotions after spending time with the team and staff on Monday and Tuesday, according to Swamp247.

“I had a great time, Kearney said. “I learned a lot about the new coaching staff and all the other coaches they have off the field. They were all great and I had a really good time. I got to see the new facility they are building, I got to hang out with some players at the school, and just meet a lot of the o-linemen.”

Offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] have been his main points of contact, and Kearney got to spend plenty of time around him over the two days he was in Gainesville. He’s enjoyed getting know both of his would-be coaches if he signed with Florida and the conversations are about more than just football.

That kind of attention has slowly moved the Gators up Kearney’s list and UF isn’t stopping there. The Gators offered wide receiver Brian Green Jr. a preferred walk-on offer on Tuesday. Green is a good friend and teammate of Kearney, so this means a lot to him.

Kearney’s been by both Florida and FSU in June. Nothing else is scheduled as far as unofficial visits go, but he does have a return to UF locked in for June 24. This time it will be an official visit, the only one Kearney plans on taking over the summer. The rest will come in the fall as he plans to make a December decision and enroll early.

The 247Sports has him at No. 128 overall in the class of 2023 and sixth among projected interior offensive linemen.

Florida adds one more name to weekend’s official visit list

Interior offensive lineman Sean Thompkins is one of the quieter recruits in the class of 2023, but he’ll be part of a big recruiting weekend at Florida this weekend.

With nine players already set to use one of their five official visits to the University of Florida over the weekend, [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s group isn’t pumping the breaks any time soon. The Gators made it an even 10 official visits this weekend with the addition of Newton (Covington, Georgia) interior offensive lineman [autotag]Sean Thompkins[/autotag] to the list of visitors, according to 247Sports.

Thompkins isn’t yet rated by 247Sports or any of the other major services, but he’s picked up offers from Florida, Baylor, Kentucky and Tennessee among others. He was in Waco, Texas, on June 10 to visit with the Bears and is coming off a trip to Lexington to see the Wildcats. Florida gets the last spot in the run, and the pace at which Thompkins is making official visits suggests he’s nearing a decision.

No date has been scheduled yet as the 6-foot-4-inch, 331-pound lineman continues to be one of the quieter recruits in the class.

This will be Thompkins’ first trip to the Swamp and Napier’s group has yet to disappoint, especially on an official visit. Offensive line coach [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] is the one who has been recruiting him the most, most recently visiting his high school during the spring evaluation period to see the rising senior in action at practice.

Hopefully, this visit will not only earn Florida some favor with the Peach State big man but also give a bit more insight into who he is as a person and player.

Gators land commitment from this in-state 3-star offensive lineman

The Gators got their fifth commit of the 2023 cycle.

Monday afternoon, offensive tackle [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] announced on his Twitter account that he has committed to play for the Florida Gators. A three-star recruit in the 2023 class, Lovett chose the Gators over Iowa State, Louisville and Missouri. He’s rated as the 728th best prospect in the class on the 247Sports composite.

Lovett has been on the Gators’ radar for a long time and he came to Florida’s campus five times this year before locking down his commitment. In his Twitter announcement, Lovett thanked his mother, brother, coaches, and teammates, singling out two of his best friends before stating that he’d play in Gainesville.

“He’s a really cool dude. He keeps it real,” Lovett said of coach [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] in an interview with On3 Sports. “He always makes sure I’m good and gives me tips on what to do during practice. Even though I’m not even there yet, he’s always trying to better me.”

As we’re coming to find out, the Gators’ offensive staff love big lineman. Standing at 6-feet-6-inches, the newest Gator fits that bill. Here’s a look at one of Lovett’s camp reps.

Lovett is the fifth commitment in head coach Billy Napier’s bump class, joining athlete Aaron Gates, interior offensive lineman Knijeah Harris, and wide receivers Creed Whittemore and Tyree Patterson.

Two more 2022 signees arrive at UF for summer semester

New faces are popping up in Gainesville as the summer semesters begin. Welcome to the Swamp, Trevor Etienne and David Conner!

A trio of early enrollees, [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Moore[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris McClellan[/autotag], joined the Gators over the spring, but more members of the class of 2022 are making their way to the Swamp. Running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]David Conner[/autotag] both arrived on campus on Sunday and are ready to take part in the Summer A semester at Florida, according to 247Sports.

Etienne, a four-star running back out of Louisiana, was one of the rare offensive standouts in the class of 2022 for Florida and has the family name to warrant lofty expectations as a Gator. [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Lorenzo Lingard[/autotag] and [autotag]Demarckus Bowman[/autotag] have held down the running backs room over spring, but now Etienne and a returning [autotag]Nay’Quan Wright[/autotag] enter the mix.

It’ll take Etienne some time to learn the playbook but look for him to contribute early on as he was one of the first players [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] sought out after taking over in Gainesville and the No. 188 overall recruit on the 247Sports composite.

Conner, a three-star tackle out of Deerfield Beach, Florida, is one of the few commitments that stayed with the Gators through the coaching change. Offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] think his frame and athleticism project well for an offensive tackle in the Southeastern Conference. It’ll likely take a few years of development to see him on the line every day, but Conner is setting himself up for success.

Getting to campus a bit earlier gives Conner more time to get used to his new environment and it sounds like he’ll be rooming with Florida’s running back of the future. Getting a lineman and a running back comfortable with each other early is a good sign for the team’s future chemistry.

The other members of the class of 2022 will arrive around May 22 and get settled in for the summer. The new-look Gators are finally starting to take shape and the Napier era is in full swing with a new crop of talent making their way to campus.

This 4-star offensive tackle sets official visit to Florida

Four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons will use one of his five official visits to see Florida on June 10.

Four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons told Swamp247 that he will officially visit Florida on June 10. Simmons is ranked as the 176th overall prospect and the 18th best player at his position.

The Gators have turned up the heat on Simmons over the past couple of months. They have made two stops by his school during the spring evaluation period and hosted him on unofficial visits during their Orange and Blue game and on April 30.

On his most recent visit, Simmons was able to spend lots of time with offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag]. They told him that they feel like he can come in and play early if he comes in and works hard due to all the upperclassmen they have on their roster.

Simmons has taken an official visit to Oklahoma State already so far and plans to take some to Tennessee, USC and Florida State as well as Florida.

Film shows incoming JUCO lineman improved his game in 2021

We took a look at the film on Florida’s JUCO transfer and break it down for you here.

Transferring JUCO offensive tackle [autotag]Jordan Herman[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Tuesday, making him a very late addition to the 2022 class. After playing college ball for Hutch CC for the past two seasons, he didn’t earn much notoriety in the transfer portal and the Gators were his only reported SEC offer. However, there’s reason to believe Herman is a hidden gem uncovered by the Orange and Blue’s staff.

Swamp247 reported that both of the Gators’ offensive line coaches — [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] — had a hand in Herman’s recruitment. Stapleton was able to watch Herman play live during his trip to Kansas, and the tackle wasted no time committing after the Gators’ scholarship offer was extended.

The eye-popping physicality is what immediately jumps off the screen when you watch Herman play. He is a fully grown man in the most complete sense of the term, standing at a whopping 6-foot-8-inch height and carrying 370 pounds. Size seems to be the attribute that Stapleton and Sale are willing to gamble on, as it was the primary selling point for ULL offensive line transfer [autotag]Kam Waites[/autotag].

Herman has had far more opportunity to play competitive football than Waites has, though, and the Hutch CC product showed tremendous growth in the technical aspects of his position last season.

The easiest thing to spot in the tape available is how much he was able to improve his snap timing and first-step quickness. In the screenshot taken from Fall Camp ’21, Herman is still in his crouch while all the other offensive linemen are already engaging with the opposing line. In the screenshot taken from Spring Camp ’22, he’s no longer the last man off the line, getting into his pass set instantly.

It’s a little harder to show with a quick tweet, but I was also impressed by how much crisper his pass sets became over the course of the six or so months between Hutch CC’s fall and spring camps. By no means is he putting up teaching tape, but the ability to get into clean pass sets is a must in the SEC and he clears that bar. Watch for yourself, you can compare his film throughout the season on his Hudl page.

For a huge player like Herman, the ability to get off the line hastily will immediately improve his on-field production. Functional strength and athleticism are a big deal in the modern evaluation process and this is a good example. A monster frame is useless if Herman lumbers so slowly that the rusher is past him by the time he gets into position.

Speed-to-power conversion is all the rage among upper-level edge rushers right now. By simply being where he’s supposed to be when he’s supposed to be there, Herman can rely on his size to thwart those efforts as opposing rushers will be unable to gain leverage, and therefore, the upper hand in any given rep.

That’s not to say Herman is a picture-perfect prospect. I fully expect him to get burned by pure speed rushers and his hand usage doesn’t make the best use of his physical traits. However, rapid improvement in a player’s sophomore season is a great sign for their future. Between his size and his rapidly improving technique, Herman is the kind of player you absolutely have to take a chance on and he’ll be an intriguing sixth lineman to lean on when injury strikes.

This 4-star offensive tackle sets official visit date to Florida

Four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons announced after his latest visit that he’ll take an official visit to Florida this summer.

Florida is looking to make some major renovations to its offensive line room this recruiting cycle after the former coaching staff failed to land top-ranked prospects during their tenure. The Gators sit in a favorable position for several top offensive linemen this cycle, including four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Lucas Simmons[/autotag] who plans to officially visit the Swamp on June 10.

Simmons made his third visit to Florida to see head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] on Saturday. He told 247Sports he most enjoyed the time he spent around the coaching staff.

Sale and Stapleton’s main pitch to Simmons was that if he came in and worked hard that he could make an impact early if he chose the Gators. He also believes that Florida would do an excellent job developing him.

Simmons said the last two visits to Gainesville have really opened his eyes. He said during his first visit that he still had the old coaching staff in mind. During Saturday’s trip, he said Florida started to feel like home.

He plans to take several official visits this summer to schools like Tennesse, USC and Florida State while taking one to Oklahoma State last weekend. Simmons said he plans to use his last one to see the Gators on June 10.

Coveted OL prospect names UF among top 4, sets commitment date

The Gators will be hard to beat for three-star offensive tackle Bryce Lovett who will make his commitment on May 16.

Three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] has been to Florida a handful of times since head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has taken over the program. Because of the sheer amount of times he has visited the Swamp, the Gators should be tough to beat for Lovett who dropped a list of his four schools while setting a commitment date. Florida made his list along with Iowa State, Missouri and Louisville. He plans to make his commitment known on May 16, his 17th birthday.

He said he likes Florida because of all the coaches they have dedicated to the offensive line unit.

“It’s the relationship I have with the new coaching staff and what they are trying to do,” Lovett said when asked what he likes about the Gators, according to 247Sports. “And then they got like five o-line coaches. They are so dedicated to the offensive line, it’s crazy.”

The 247Sports composite rankings have the Rockledge, Florida, native as the 715th overall prospect and as the 61st best offensive tackle.

Lovett will be a solid addition to the class as long as the Gators, Napier and offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] sign some of four- and five-star offensive linemen this cycle. The unit needs an overhaul after the previous regime struggled to recruit the position.

In-state OT planning official visit to UF following spring game visit

The Gators are at the top of offensive tackle Bryce Lovett’s list after several spring trips to the Swamp.

Three-star offensive tackle [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] has become a familiar face around the Florida Gators’ football facilities after making three trips to Gainesville in as many weeks earlier in the spring. The Rockledge, Florida, recruit returned to the Swamp on Thursday for Florida’s Orange and Blue game and left with the intention to spend one of his official visits on the Gators, according to 247Sports.

“I don’t know where or when (the official visits will take place), but probably in the first few weeks of June,” Lovett said. “Florida will get one of them, but I don’t know where else. Florida will probably be in the first or second week of June maybe.”

Lovett said the Gators were leading in his recruitment due to the consistent attention he’s received from the staff. The plan is for Lovett to make a decision on June 25, but that decision could get bumped up if the weekend visit goes well. He’s seen everything there is to see at Florida, so that trip is mainly to see the new training facility and get one last look at the program before deciding.

Iowa State is the only other team that’s hosted him on campus over the spring, but Arkansas and Missouri also loom. At this point, Lovett still feels like Florida’s recruit to lose.

He feels Florida can develop him to his fullest capabilities and appreciates what he’s seen from offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag]. The staff sees him playing both tackle and guard for Florida, likely fitting wherever depth is needed early on with room to grow into a starting role.

With an early timeline and all signs pointing in the right direction, Gator Nation might want to keep an eye on Lovett for a surprise commitment.
