Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike predicts Chiefs vs. Eagles, Super Bowl LVII

Kentucky Derby-winning horse Rich Strike made his pick for the #Chiefs vs. #Eagles Super Bowl LVII matchup.

With Super Bowl LVII less than 48 hours away, everyone is locking in the predictions for the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. When I say everyone, I mean everyone, including some creatures of the four-legged variety.

The 2022 Kentucky Derby winner, Rich Strike, got to play the role of handicapper this time around and made his pick for the big game. He had to choose between feed buckets to make his prediction. One bucket had the Eagles logo, the other had the Chiefs logo. He picked the Kansas City bucket declaring them the winners of Super Bowl LVII.

Check out the video of his pick down below:

The 4-year-old colt had 80-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby in 2022. Along with jockey Sonny Leon, Rich Strike defied those odds in a big way. The Chiefs are still betting underdogs heading into Super Bowl LVII with the Eagles being favored by 1.5 points. With this prediction from Rich Strike, it would seem that underdogs stick together.

2022 Belmont Stakes: Mo Donegal wins Belmont Stakes in Kentucky Derby rematch with Rich Strike

Mo Donegal aced the test of champions.

The test of the champions has produced another worthy victor as Mo Donegal earned a first place finish at the 2022 Belmont Stakes on Saturday in Elmont, New York.

It’s the fourth Belmont Stakes victory for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Mo Donegal got off to a middling start, hanging in the middle of the pack while We The People raced out to the lead after starting on the rail. Despite sitting in sixth place on the backstretch, Mo Donegal was able to muscle around the top of the field and gather strength down the stretch to cross the finish line in just 2:28.28.

The 1.5 mile dirt race saw just an eight horse field, but it happened to be packed with established names like Skippylongstocking, Barber Road and 2022 Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike.

This was Rich Strike’s first race since his historic Run for the Roses when he was added as a late entry to the field, then blazed away with the win despite 80-1 odds—the second longest ever to win the Derby.

On Saturday, Rich Strike struggled to keep up with the pace and couldn’t make a late move running in eighth almost the entire race.

Mo Donegal, who finished fifth behind Rich Strike at the Kentucky Derby will take home $800,000 of the $1.5 million purse after closing with 5-2 odds.

Race Results

  1. Mo Donegal ($7.20, $3.80, $3.00)
  2. Nest (N/A, $5.30, $4.10)
  3. Skippylongstocking (N/A, N/A, $5.60)

(Based on $2 bet)

$2.00 Exacta: $27.60

$1.00 Trifecta: $187.50

$1.00 Superfecta: $692.00

Belmont Stakes: 2022 post position draw results and morning line odds

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike is back in the field, but not the early favorite

The final jewel of the Triple Crown is up for grabs this Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York as horse racing turns its attention to the 2022 Belmont Stakes.

After skipping the Preakness Stakes to prepare for the annual June event, Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike is back in the field and one of the favorites to win the 1.5 mile dirt race at 7-2.

It’s been a wild season for the former 80-1 longshot who stunned the world at Churchill Downs. Now he’ll get to face off against some familiar names. Though just eight horses were entered into Tuesday’s post position draw, the experience among them is nothing to take lightly.

We The People opens on the rail as the odds-on favorite at 2-1.

Barber Road and Mo Donegal will get a long-awaited rematch with Rich Strike following their battle at the Kentucky Derby. Preakness entrants Creative Minister and Skippylongstocking will try to improve on their respective third- and fifth-place finishes.

Early Voting, who won last month’s Preakness Stakes, has opted to skip the Belmont Stakes in order to prepare for the  Travers Stakes in August.

Here’s a look at the post position draw and morning line odds for the 154th running of the Belmont Stakes.

Early Voting wins the 147th running of the Preakness Stakes setting up Belmont matchup with Rich Strike

The Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown belongs to Early Voting

With 2022 Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike withdrawing from the field for the Preakness Stakes, the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown was wide open for the taking.

In just 1:54.54, Early Voting went out a nabbed it with ease.

A rather slow pace allowed jockey Jose Ortiz to hang back in the middle of the pack before taking charge with Early Voting (5-1) just before the final turn. When the pack broke down the stretch, Early Voting successfully pulled ahead with a three-lengths lead and couldn’t be caught.

The victory on Saturday seemingly sets up an epic matchup next month at the Belmont Stakes as the last leg of the Triple Crown is expected to pit the Derby and Preakness winners against each other in New York.

Epicenter (6-5) entered the week as one of the favorites after nearly pulling off the win at Churchill Downs before Rich Strike completed the second-largest upset in Kentucky Derby history at 80-1 odds. He made a late charge to take home second place while Creative Minister (10-1) grabbed third.

Race Results

  1. Early Voting ($13.40/$4.60/$3.60)
  2.  Epicenter (N/A, $2.80/$2.40)
  3. Creative Minister (N/A, N/A, $4.20)

(Based on $2 bet)

$2.00 Exacta: $25.80

$1.00 Trifecta: $66.50

$1.00 Superfecta: $162.90

Purse Payouts

  1. Early Voting $900,000
  2. Epicenter $300,000
  3. Creative Minister $165,000

Why Rich Strike isn’t racing in the 2022 Preakness Stakes, explained

Here’s why he’s skipping the race.

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Watching the 2022 Preakness Stakes and wondering why Rich Strike, who won the Kentucky Derby a couple of weeks ago, isn’t in the race? We’re here to help.

If you’re here, it probably means you want an answer to that question: Why would a horse that just beat 80-1 odds to win the unlikeliest of Kentucky Derbys not race in the next jewel of the Triple Crown?

It’s a great question. And we have an answer, so let’s dive in as we get set at Pimlico:

Preakness Stakes: 2022 post position draw results and morning line odds

The field is set for the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown

The 147th running of the Preakness States may be the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, but there will be no attempt at horse racing’s biggest title in 2022.

After winning the Kentucky Derby as an 80-to-1 longshot, Rich Strike will pass on the Preakness in order to better prepare for the Belmont Stakes later this season. That means an already wide-open field will get more of the spotlight as the sport turns its attention to Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 21.

The 1 316 miles track will see plenty of names familiar to those who tuned into the Derby with Epicenter (6-5 morning line favorite), Ethereal Road and Simplification all back in the field.

Here’s a look at how they’ll line up after Monday’s post position draw.

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike will skip the Preakness Stakes to prepare for the Belmont Stakes

Rich Strike’s quest for the Triple Crown is over

The 2022 horse racing season will not see a Triple Crown winner.

After a stunning victory in the Kentucky Derby, Rich Strike will not run in the Preakness Stakes on May 21 and instead prepare for the Belmont Stakes on June 11, owner Rick Dawson and trainer Eric Reed announced.

The colt was an extremely late entry into the Kentucky Derby field, drawing in on Friday after a scratch opened up a spot in the field. That saw the three-year-old’s odds languish at 80-to-1 before pulling off the second-largest upset in Derby history.

Rich Strike becomes just the third horse to win the Kentucky Derby and skip the Preakness since 1996. Justify in 2018 remains the last horse to win the Triple Crown.

Over the last 30 years, Derby champions who won with odds of 10-to-1 or longer have won the Preakness four times (I’ll Have Another in 2012, Funny Cide in 2003, War Emblem in 2002 and Charismatic in 1999). In 2019, Country House won the Kentucky Derby at 65.2-to-1 odds before skipping the Preakness after contracting a virus.

Mandaloun, which was deemed winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby following the disqualification on Medina Spirit, also skipped the Preakness.

The remainder of the 2022 Preakness field has yet to be announced.

2022 Kentucky Derby sets Churchill Downs record for money wagered at $179 million

The vast majority was, understandable, not placed on Rich Strike’s winning 80-1 odds.

This past weekend’s Kentucky Derby went above and beyond anything the event had seen before.

According to Churchill Downs, a record $179.0 million was bet on Saturday’s Derby (h/t ESPN’s David Purdum). It’s an increase of 17% of the amount wagered in 2021 and an eight percent increase over the previous track record.

Yet only $501,135 wagered on the win pool was on Rich Strike, the race’s winning horse

The amount bet on Rich Strike was the lowest of any horse in the field, which makes sense given Rich Strikes’ 80-1 odds. But those who did wager on the winner received a nice payout, a payout that could have been much greater if wagered on when the horse’s odds were 300-1 back in March or even 200-1 on Saturday at Circa in Las Vegas.

As the Kentucky Derby sizable increase in wagers over last year, you can bet that next year’s event will receive a huge amount of money in bets.

11 other 80-to-1 longshots across sport to show how improbable Rich Strike’s Kentucky Derby win was

If Rich Strike can do it, so can they, right?

It might be difficult to understand just how improbable Rich Strike’s win at the Kentucky Derby was if you aren’t into sports betting (or math, which I completely relate to). So to put a little context behind the victor’s 80 to 1 odds, we’re going to take a look at some other long shots across sports with similarly long odds.

That Rich Strike wasn’t even entered into the race as of Friday morning helps to begin to understand how crazy it is that the horse was a champion by Saturday evening. The odds of that win were longer than those of the Cincinnati Bengals to win the AFC last season (70 to 1), which seemed impossible after they won four games in 2020.

Here are few more comparable long shots across sports, with odds from Tipico Sportsbook.

Before winning the Kentucky Derby, Rich Strike’s trainer lost two dozen horses in a 2016 barn fire

What an unfathomable tragedy to come back from.

After winning the 148th Kentucky Derby, Rich Strike’s trainer Eric Reed should understandably feel like he’s standing on Cloud Nine. When you make history and floor the entire horse racing and betting sphere in the process, the world is your oyster.

But with great glory comes a degree of adversity and, in this case, a terrible tragedy.

Before Rich Strike kicked it into gear in unprecedented fashion down the stretch on Saturday, Reed once had to salvage the impossible from the ground up. As impressive as his horse’s run was, this is about the horror he endured before capturing horse racing’s most prestigious title:

In late 2016, on his farm in Lexington, a massive barn fire claimed the lives of 24 horses under his care.

More from WKYT News:

“The owner of the training center, Eric Reed says they rescued as many as they could before the flames took over.

‘My other guys were helping and the horses would run back in naturally and we would have to take them back out. The barn started collapsing and we just had to call it off,’ Reed said.

Reed says there were 36 horses inside the barn at the time, but only close to a dozen made it out alive.”

Oh my goodness. I can’t even comprehend the courage that compels you to run back toward danger after escaping to safety. It’s simply unfathomable. I wouldn’t have blamed Reed if he gave up on training then and there for pure trauma’s sake.

A half-decade later, he and Rich Strike are co-owners of the famed rose garland. What a remarkable twist of fate after so much heartache.
