Rich Paul: ‘LeBron is a free agent’

Did Rich Paul, LeBron James’ agent, reveal what James is going to do regarding the player option on his contract for next season?

Although LeBron James can opt out of his contract and become a free agent this summer, there doesn’t seem to be the same type of anticipation or angst regarding his potential free agency as in the past when he was in the same situation.

He is widely expected to turn down his player option for next season and become a free agent. Many expect him to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, and one report even indicated he may do so by opting in.

During the alternate broadcast of Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, Rich Paul, James’ agent, may have revealed the superstar’s plan.

It has been reported that part of James’ plan is to play two more seasons, at least for now. He just completed his 21st year in the NBA. Despite turning 39 years of age, he maintained the type of production he has always had throughout his career.

That production resulted in him being named to the All-NBA third team this season. It was the 20th time he had been selected to one of the All-NBA squads.

Bronny James’ pre-draft workout with the Suns fuels speculation he could be a first-round pick

Would the Suns actually target Bronny James in the first round?

With just over a month until the 2024 NBA Draft, we are starting to hear more rumors about potential fits for Bronny James.

While many mock drafts originally had Bronny projected to the Lakers to play alongside his father LeBron James, other destinations are popping up as landing spots for the former USC guard.

For example, ESPN’s latest mock draft had Bronny projected to the Celtics just one pick before Los Angeles is on the clock in the second round. He was also rumored to have interest from the Jazz, who are on the clock early in the second round.

Rich Paul, who represents both Bronny and LeBron, spoke about a potential draft range for the freshman (via Bleacher Report):

“Bronny’s range has been all over. Some teams think he goes 20 to 40, some say 30-50, and some teams think he’ll go undrafted. It just takes one team. This is something I do every year during the draft process. This is not Bronny-centric. He’s a part of our draft class. I have to try to help find the right fit for all my guys as well as the right deal. So that’s how I’m looking at it.”

To his point, it only takes “one team” to decide to call the name of a prospect on draft night. One of those teams that may have interest, according to Shams Charania, is the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix president of basketball operations and general manager James Jones won multiple championships alongside LeBron James in both Cleveland and Miami as a player before becoming an executive.

If the Suns decide they want to select Bronny, they have the No. 22 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft (via The Athletic):

“Since the end of a disappointing season, Phoenix’s offseason plan, particularly with the draft, has been a daily conversation. With the 22nd pick, the financially limited Suns need a player who can contribute immediately. That’s probably not James. He could play and develop in Mullett Arena, a few miles from where the Suns play in downtown Phoenix. But that won’t help the Suns, built around the star power of Booker, Durant and Beal, get immediately closer to a title. Their window won’t stay open forever. Some think it has already closed.”

One could easily argue that a win-now player would make more sense for that franchise after failing to realize expectations during the postseason in the Western Conference.

But perhaps new head coach Mike Budenholzer and the Phoenix brass was impressed with what they saw from Bronny at the 2024 NBA Draft Combine and the Klutch Sports Pro Day in Los Angeles.

This adds further fuel to the fire that betting the under on Bronny’s draft position is probably a smart strategy.

Rich Paul on how many more years LeBron James may play in the NBA

Rich Paul, LeBron James’ agent, doesn’t think James’ NBA career is going to end yet.

LeBron James is facing a big decision this summer. He can opt out of next season, which is the final season on his current contract, and become a free agent. While he will likely do just that, there is a quiet sense that he is going to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers on a new deal.

At age 39, he is playing at or near the level he has been accustomed to playing at for the better part of his career, sans the defensive end, where there has been considerable slippage. It isn’t hard to imagine him playing one or even two more years at an elite or near-elite level, especially when one considers how diligently he takes care of his body.

How many more years James wants to play in the NBA, however, could be a different story. It isn’t unheard of for great athletes to call it quits when they still have enough left in the tank for at least one more year of great production.

Rich Paul, James’ agent, said on SiriusXM NBA Radio that he thinks James will play a little longer but making it clear the superstar is closing in on the end of his career (h/t Lakers Nation).

“Yeah, you know, I believe so,” Paul said when asked if LeBron will play next season. “Look, I think we definitely have less years with LJ than we’ve already been able to enjoy. But I think there’s a world in which, you know, look, the guy is committed more than half of his life to the game of basketball. I think he has treated it with the utmost respect and been someone to give back to the game. … But I do think, to answer your question, yeah, I think we see him, I don’t know how long we see him play but my conversation with him is just have fun. Just enjoy it because you got a lot less years to play than you’ve already played. So just enjoy the ride, man, it’s been a beautiful ride. … But he’s had an unbelievable career and I think we do see him next year. Now, how many more after that, I do not know. But I think he got maybe two or three years left in the tank, maybe.”

After the Lakers were knocked out of the NBA playoffs on Monday by the Denver Nuggets, James refused to give any clues about his immediate future.

He has always been tight-lipped and even passive-aggressive about his future plans. But this time, unlike a few times in the past when he approached free agency, there isn’t a sense that he’s about to leave his current team.

Rich Paul on whether LeBron James wants to or will be traded

There has been speculation that the Lakers may trade LeBron James, and his agent, Rich Paul, had an emphatic comment on those rumors.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been a festering disappointment this season. Despite being expected to be a legitimate contender for the NBA championship, they possess a mediocre 25-25 record with the All-Star break approaching.

They have achieved some inspiring victories against some of the league’s best teams, including the Boston Celtics, who they defeated on Thursday. But they have also lost in meek fashion to many teams that are seemingly inferior, at least on paper.

A tweet from a reporter at KTLA, a Los Angeles-based television station, on Thursday, claimed the Lakers were seriously looking to trade LeBron James. James himself didn’t help that speculation when he posted an hourglass emoji on X after L.A.’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

But Rich Paul, James’ agent, tried to put an end to that rumor (h/t Lakers Daily).

Via ESPN:

“LeBron won’t be traded, and we aren’t asking to be,” Paul said in reaction to some growing speculation about James’ future ahead of next week’s trade deadline.

James is under contract through next season, but next season is a player option year, so he could decide to become a free agent and leave the Lakers this offseason.

The 39-year-old continues to put up his usual outstanding numbers and shooting efficiency this season, although there is increasing criticism of his major drop-off on the defensive end in recent seasons.

LeBron James put an end to his nonsensical trade rumors with a statement from agent Rich Paul

Despite the rumors, the Lakers were never going to trade LeBron James.

Despite the rumors, the Los Angeles Lakers were never going to trade LeBron James unless he demanded to get moved to a specific team.

Even though there was wild speculation after James posted a cryptic emoji earlier this week, there was virtually no chance the Los Angeles front office would trade the four-time NBA Finals MVP unless he explicitly demanded a move.

With less than a week to go before the trade deadline, James’ longtime agent Rich Paul quieted those rumors by confirming to Brian Windhorst that such a request would not happen (via ESPN):

“LeBron won’t be traded, and we aren’t asking to be,” Paul said in reaction to some growing speculation about James’ future ahead of next week’s trade deadline.

Perhaps it is unusual to hear an agent declare that his client will not get traded, but James and Klutch Sports have enough power within the franchise that this likely ends the rumors.

While a trade seemed out of the question, it wasn’t entirely far-fetched to believe James was frustrated about the level of performance the Lakers have had this season.

For what it is worth: James has a player option in his contract that would allow him to become a free agent at the end of the season. He has made it abundantly clear that his goal is to play with his son, Bronny, once the USC freshman turns pro.

Although that means the Lakers could potentially risk losing James for nothing in free agency, any team that would trade for him would also have that same fear.

Arguably most importantly: It is unlikely that the 39-year-old NBA star (or anyone in his family) would want to relocate to a different city at this point in his life and career.

Rich Paul on difference in media coverage of LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan

LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul says Michael Jordan didn’t have to deal with the type of sports media landscape that James has dealt with.

LeBron James has become a somewhat polarizing figure in sports these days for whatever reason, and it has seemingly splintered sports fans.

Those who are iron-clad fans of his feel he is the greatest to ever play basketball by far, but he has his haters who claim he is vastly overrated and overhyped. Of course, the objective truth lies somewhere in between.

One difference in the sports landscape between now and the days when Michael Jordan, another prime candidate for greatest of all time, is the advent of social media later in the decade of the 2000s after Jordan had retired.

Rich Paul, James’ close friend and agent, said on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast that James is the first player to deal with the constant cycle of media coverage and opinions from a wide range of pundits (h/t Lakers Daily).

“Mike (Michael Jordan) transcended the game,” said Paul. “When Kobe [Bryant] came, Kobe was a silhouette of Mike. That’s everything, which is great. But LeBron is the first player to have to deal with a 24-7-365 news cycle of sports and opinions from those that’s not even capable or carry the expertise to give a valid opinion. In addition to, ‘No, I’m not gonna really do it how y’all want me to do it, I’m probably gonna do it how I decide to do it.’ We all know that don’t go over well, and so then you have this environment and this sports society that’s created, and so now you have to root against. That’s a whole another thing that Mike never had to deal with, because his hardest critic was probably Peter Vecsey.”

Just as there are cracks in James’ armor to talk about, there were cracks in Jordan’s armor, such as the quality of competition he faced in the playoffs or his reportedly harsh treatment of teammates. One can only wonder how he would’ve been treated by armchair quarterbacks on social media had the medium been fully fledged back in the 1990s.

Stephen A. Smith once told Rich Paul that LeBron James isn’t the GOAT

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith recalled the time he told Rich Paul, LeBron James’ agent, that James isn’t the greatest ever.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

The debate of who is the greatest player in NBA history rages on, and it is one that will not be resolved anytime soon. Perhaps there isn’t a fully objective answer.

Many still believe Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever, even 20 years after he retired. But right after Jordan’s retirement, LeBron James entered the league, and he has, in the minds of plenty, been building a strong argument that he is actually the greatest ever.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith seems to be a fan of James, but he strongly believes the four-time MVP isn’t the greatest ever. He has made that opinion clear numerous times on the air, particularly after some of James’ more disappointing performances.

While on Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George’s podcast, Smith recalled the time he told Rich Paul, James’ agent, that James is only the second-greatest of all time behind Jordan. He said Paul didn’t take it well (h/t Lakers Daily).

“I got him as the second-best player in the history of basketball,” Smith said of James. “I got him ahead of Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]. I got him behind no one but Jordan.
I said, ‘You act like that’s an insult.’ This dude, ‘It is an insult.’ I said, ‘Get the (expletive) out of my face.’”

It appears James himself believes he’s the greatest player in basketball history. However, due mostly to his poor 4-6 record in the NBA Finals, he will likely have to boost his resume to get the recognition he believes he’s entitled to.

Rich Paul’s latest creative pivot with New Balance is probably going to shock you, but it’s all according to his plan

There’s so much more to Rich Paul than we thought and he’s finally opening up about it

Nobody knows the creative side of Rich Paul.

We’ve known who he is for nearly two decades now, and if you ask people about him they’ll probably talk to you about his work with LeBron James, his running Klutch Sports Group, maybe even his relationship with Adele.

What they probably aren’t going to talk about is his creative work. But that’s the version of Paul that we’re beginning to find out more about as time passes — and he’s thrilled about it.

Rich Paul is diving into his new passions. Not only does he have a legitimate signature sneaker with New Balance he launched in 2021, but now he’s got a full apparel brand made specifically for the athlete — Klutch Athletics.

Paul’s opened up to For The Win about his new brand, the inspirations behind it and what might come from it in the future.

You can check out the full conversation in the video above.

And while it’s been a talking point on social media, the Lakers are not considering trading Anthony Davis, according to sources. For any dialogue of that nature to occur, his agent, Rich Paul, would have received calls from interested teams inquiring if Davis would agree to an extension if they traded for him. Those conversations have not taken place, sources say.

The question often discussed in Lakers’ headquarters nowadays is whether they should go all-in expeditiously on revamping the roster around James and Anthony Davis, or are they better served to postpone wholesale changes until the end of the season? -via Bleacher Report / November 10, 2022
Not to mention, Ryan never even saw Austin Reaves throw him the cross-court inbounds pass while he was curling around the screen set by Anthony Davis. “I just remember turning the corner and I think the ball was in the air,” Ryan said. Ryan doesn’t want to be known as a one-shot surprise. “I thought my ‘Welcome to the NBA moment’ was after we make that big shot, then we play Utah a couple nights later and I pretty much did nothing,” Ryan said. “One night you might have to save the day, the other night you might literally not be asked to do anything. So it’s just a matter of just staying ready, trying to be as consistent as possible.” -via ESPN / November 10, 2022
“Signing this extension last summer, it was just so confusing to me because I think he did it because he was committed to the organization. ‘You’ve got two picks, I’m going to show my commitment to you so you can go make some moves,’ because you knew what this team was a year ago and they haven’t added any tangible pieces . And for him to sign that extension, to show his commitment, the biggest confusion of all of the extensions was Rob Pelinka, because you were like ‘what has Rob Pelinka done?’ Because LeBron James? LeBron James came to LA because LeBron James wanted to come to LA. Anthony Davis was coming to LA because, well, he wanted to play with LeBron James and win a championship. So when you look at all of the moves made by Rob Pelinka, does he deserve an extension? So for LeBron James to commit to an organization and say ‘hey, do you know what? I want to be here, I want to make sure you feel comfortable to trade future assets, I don’t need a contender, I just need a good team.’ So for him to sit on the wall and be a good professional and say ‘well look, we’ve got a lot of guys who haven’t played’ this is arguably the greatest player we’ve ever seen, one, two, three, wherever you rank him, he’s about to pass Kareem as the all-time leading scorer, this is the roster you put next to him. The formula has been shown for two decades how to win with LeBron and they have thrown that all away.” -via Clutch Points / November 9, 2022
