Xavier McKinney injured in ATV accident, out for a few weeks

New York Giants place Xavier McKinney on Reserve/Non-Football Injury list

While away on a vacation in Cabo, Mexico New York Giants safety, [autotag]Xavier McKinney[/autotag], suffered a hand injury while riding on an ATV which will keep him off the field for a few weeks.

The former Crimson Tide stand-out has been a key piece of the Giants’ early success this season as they have raced out to a shocking 6-2 record.

As a result of the injury, the Giants have placed McKinney on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list which means that at a minimum he will be likely out for Weeks 10-13.

Week 9 of the NFL season is wrapping up tonight with Monday Night Football so there is hope that McKinney would be able to return in time for the playoffs.

The Giants have been outstanding to start the year under first-year head coach Brian Daboll. Daboll’s name may sound familiar to Tide fans, and that is because he was the offensive coordinator for Alabama in 2017 and won a national championship.

It’s cool to see these two guys who were in Tuscaloosa together succeed on the biggest stage.

Malcolm Jenkins and Juwan Johnson cleared from COVID-19 protocols

Some reinforcements are on the way: Malcolm Jenkins and Juwan Johnson have been cleared from COVID-19 protocols

Some reinforcements are on the way for the New Orleans Saints: starting safety Malcolm Jenkins and backup tight end Juwan Johnson have both been cleared from the COVID-19 reserve list, per Tuesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.

And more help could be on the way ahead of Sunday’s Week 17 game with the Carolina Panthers after the NFL and NFLPA adjusted their protocols to reflect the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Asymptomatic individuals may now return to work after five days, not ten, regardless of vaccination status.

That’s big news for a Saints team that lost to the Miami Dolphins on Monday night in part because of an outbreak that sidelined nearly two dozen players, including their top two quarterbacks and all three starting linebackers, plus an important on-field leader in Jenkins.

It’s frustrating that this change was initiated after the Saints-Dolphins game, but it honestly wouldn’t have made much of a difference for New Orleans. Only two players entered COVID protocols prior to that five-day window which would have allowed them to play, in Johnson and tight end Adam Trautman. All of the other Saints players on the list missed the cut and wouldn’t have cleared protocol in enough time to play on Dec. 27, including Jenkins.

Fortunately they should have ample time to get right in time for Jan. 2’s matchup with Carolina. And with a playoffs berth still within reach, New Orleans needs all the help it can get.

Alvin Kamara’s positive test confirmed, RB designated to COVID-19 reserve list

The New Orleans Saints designated RB Alvin Kamara to the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list after he tested positive for the coronavirus.

The New Orleans Saints announced Friday that running back Alvin Kamara was placed on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list, sidelining him for at least 10 days after testing positive for the coronavirus. The team’s best player is now ineligible to suit up for their Week 17 regular season finale and, depending on how the postseason schedule shakes out, the first round of the playoffs.

It’s a huge loss. They’ll now be leaning on backup running backs Latavius Murray and Ty Montgomery, as well as special teams ace Dwayne Washington. With the receiving corps hammered by injuries — starters Emmanuel Sanders and Marquez Callaway are both still in their first  year with the team — points could come at a premium on Sunday even against an undermanned Carolina Panthers defense.

But the real story here is the postseason. Kamara is probably a loss for the first round any way you slice it, and it’s kind of a long shot for the Saints to earn a valuable first-round bye (they would need to defeat the Panthers while the Green Bay Packers lose and the Seattle Seahawks win their respective games).

The NFL’s single-loss elimination format narrows the margin for error to an incredibly thin window, and Kamara’s absence means the Saints are in serious danger no matter who their opponent is: whether it’s the Bears, Los Angeles Rams, or Arizona Cardinals defense facing them, New Orleans will be effectively pitching left-handed.

Chiefs place FB Anthony Sherman on Reserve/COVID-19 list

Another player goes on the COVID-19 reserve list for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed another player on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Following the team’s Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs have placed fullback Anthony Sherman on the reserve/COVID-19 list according to the NFL’s official transaction report. Sherman only played two snaps on offense during the Week 5 game, but he did play 22 snaps on special teams.

Sherman becomes the second player on the list, joining practice squad QB Jordan Ta’amu, who tested positive for the virus and went on the list ahead of the Week 4 game against the New England Patriots. The team also had a strength and conditioning coach test positive for the virus over the weekend.

Remember, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Sherman has tested positive for the virus. Players can be placed on the list after exposure to someone who has tested positive. Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor is reporting that Sherman is on the list due to exposure to the virus. As of this morning, the Chiefs had no new positive cases of COVID-19 from Monday’s round of testing according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

There are still six days until the rescheduled Week 6 game between the Chiefs and Bills. There is currently no indication that this could put that game in jeopardy. The team will likely be without Sherman for the time being. While that won’t necessarily hurt the offensive gameplan much, it certainly hurts the team on special teams, as he’s one of the leaders of that unit.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about this situation.

John Ursua is 1st Seahawk to land on Reserve/COVID-19 list

Second-year wide receiver John Ursua is the first Seattle Seahawk to land on the NFL’s Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Seattle Seahawks were almost able to make it two weeks without a player landing on the NFL’s Reserve/COVID-19 list but that all changed Sunday when second-year receiver, John Ursua, was named on the official transaction wire.

Because of privacy concerns, teams are not allowed to discuss the specifics of a player’s test or medical status, the list simply indicates that Ursua has either tested positive for the coronavirus or has been directly exposed to someone who has.

Ursua can later be removed from the list after meeting the league’s protocols for testing negative. He does not currently count towards the Seahawks 80-man roster at this time.
