A big, unflagged hit on Trevor Lawrence had NFL fans totally confused about roughing the passer rules

Make up your minds,refs!

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Another NFL playoff game, another opportunity for football fans to become completely befuddled by what exactly constitutes as roughing the passer.

During Saturday’s AFC divisional round matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs, a handful of calls/no calls on roughing the passer confounded and frustrated those who just want some gosh darn consistency on one of the game’s most costly penalties.

Whether you’re a Jags or Chiefs fan, or just a regular spectator, you were likely to throw your hands up in exacerbation.

On one play, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence took a big hit from Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, welcoming questions as to where the flags were.

On another play, people wondered if Jags pass rusher Arden Key’s hit on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes that temporarily sent the latter out of the game constituted for a penalty.

Two of Key’s hits on on Mahomes also got people talking as to whether or not they deserved the dreaded penalty.

So, again, roughing the passer or not? You decide. Some people feel the league is going easier on Mahomes than Lawrence, others are just perplexed as to what the penalty even means anymore.

Joey Bosa delivered an expletive-filled rant about referees after Chargers loss to Jaguars

Gracious, Joey!

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa didn’t hold back when talking about the refereeing of L.A.’s playoff exit on Saturday.

During Monday’s open locker room for the Chargers, Bosa sounded off when asked about his incredibly costly penalty during Los Angeles’ loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Bosa got flagged for taking off and slamming his helmet after what he felt was a missed call on a Jaguars touchdown play. The penalty yardage helped Jacksonville convert a two-point conversion and eventually play for a game-winning field goal.

Two days later, Bosa admitted that he’s got to maintain his cool in situations like that. He also ripped into what he thinks is a grossly unfair balance between NFL players and referees, using some colorful words in the process.

WARNING! The clip below contains NSFW language.

Well, tell ’em what you really think. Bosa clearly doesn’t have sunny feelings toward the NFL’s officiating crew, and lets them know that in no uncertain terms.

Bosa is one of the league’s star pass rushers, and the shield probably isn’t too happy about him being so critical of its referees. However, like players, refs are never above critiques. Bosa might get fined for this, but he’s probably happy to get this rant out of his system.

Referee Scott Novak’s crew assigned to work Chiefs-Raiders game

The #Chiefs have pulled referee Scott Novak for the second time this season in Week 18 against the #Raiders.

Fourth-year NFL referee Scott Novak and his crew are set to officiate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 18 game against the Las Vegas Raiders according to Football Zebras.

Novak officiated the team’s Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals, so the team will finish the season with the same officiating crew they began with. Novak’s crew called eight penalties for 74 yards in that game, with five penalties called on the Cardinals (home team) and three on the Chiefs (away team).

Through 15 games this season, the 182 flags thrown by Novak’s crew rank seventh in the league out of 17 officiating crews. His crew has called 10 more penalties on the home team (96) compared to the away team (86). Their 24 dismissed penalties tie for the fourth-fewest in the NFL.

False start (40) and offensive holding (30) are the penalties called with the most frequency by this crew. Defensive holding (17), defensive pass interference (14) and delay of game (11) are also among the penalties in the double-digits for Novak.

The Raiders have seven delay-of-game penalties this season, which is tied for the second-most in the NFL. That’ll be something to watch with this crew and a new quarterback under center in Jarrett Stidham.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs lead the league in defensive pass interference penalties with 13. That’s to be expected with a group of rookies in the secondary, but against a vertical passing game that features Davante Adams it could be especially troubling with this crew.

NFL fans were absolutely livid with referees stopping a defensive touchdown during Vikings-Colts for no reason

Referees, am I right?

NFL referees once again became the source of fan fury on Saturday with a deeply controversial ruling.

On what looked to be a clear fumble recovery for the Minnesota Vikings that would’ve resulted in a defensive touchdown late in the fourth quarter, the refs ruled Indianapolis Colts running back Deon Jackson down by contact before the ball came out.

The call came as the Vikings were trying to complete a 33-point comeback, the largest margin ever erased in NFL history. Naturally, Vikings fans and those just annoyed by bad officiating in general were outraged by the call.

Just on an initial look, the ball looked to have slipped out of Jackson’s grasp into the hands of Vikings cornerback Chandon Sullivan. That it wasn’t ruled a fumble is pretty baffling, even for NFL referee standards.

Well, as you can guess, folks were not happy about this one.

In Minnesota, fans pelted beer cans at the field to show their frustration with the decision.

Kings coach Mike Brown was not happy with officials following his team’s 110-107 loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday at FTX Arena. Brown made his feelings clear during his postgame news conference, saying he felt Heat guard Tyler Herro traveled before making a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining. “We’ve got a lot of respect for the program, the Miami Heat, (coach Erik) Spoelstra and everything they’ve done, and Tyler Herro’s a great player, but he traveled,” Brown said. “He traveled on the last play and I would not be doing my job if I didn’t come up here and protect my guys. My guys fought their behind off for close to 48 minutes, and to (see Herro) pump fake and then sidestep, or hop and then one-two and a shot, and not make that call, to me it’s just unbelievable.” -via Sacramento Bee / November 3, 2022
HoopsHype: Steve Kerr on carries: “Basically the whole league does that. They’ve been doing it since Allen Iverson convinced the referees that it wasn’t a carry. It was a ruling that did not sit well with Curry. “It was an awful call,” he said afterward with a smile of resignation. “What did you think I was going to say? I was walking to the free-throw line, thinking I was going to get three free throws and even the score with a minute and some change left.” But he also believed there was more than incidental “high-five” contact. “It was a tough one,” he said. “I clearly felt a lot of contact. I don’t know what they saw besides the high-five contact they talked about. But you got to be allowed to finish your motion. That’s what I felt like. “Especially when you slow it down to slo-mo, it’s pretty clear there was a lot of contact. But what do I know about calls?” -via South Florida Sun-Sentinel / November 2, 2022

7 Takeaways from the Bears’ shootout loss to the Dolphins

From Justin Fields’ stardom to Chase Claypool’s encouraging debut, here are our takeaways from Sunday’s game between the Bears and Dolphins.

The Chicago Bears may be piling up losses, but when it results in some of the greatest quarterback play in franchise history, it somehow feels okay. The Bears fell to the Miami Dolphins 35-32 on the lakefront on Sunday, but once again saw an offensive explosion thanks to quarterback Justin Fields. The second-year signal caller was sensational in a record-setting performance, totaling four touchdowns on the day.

While the offense continues to do its thing, the defense is becoming a shell of itself. The Dolphins were able to score at will against the Bears, having wide-open receivers and gaping holes for the running backs for much of the day. Despite those issues, however, the win was within reach for the Bears late, but a missed penalty and a brutal fourth-down drop ended those hopes.

If you ask any player, they’ll tell you there’s no moral victories in the NFL. But fans have a different perspective as they see a powerful offense for the first time in years that has the potential to carry the Bears for the foreseeable future. Here are our takeaways from Sunday’s game.

Bears vs. Dolphins: Everything we know about Chicago’s high-scoring loss

Points were aplenty when the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins faced off at Soldier Field on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Bears, they were unable to score any more when it truly counted at the end of the game. The Bears fell to the Dolphins 35-32 to fall to 3-6.

The quarterbacks on both teams stole the show, with Justin Fields and Tua Tagovailoa showing out both through the air and on the ground for the Bears and Dolphins, respectively. The Bears unleashed an elite offense for the third week in a row, but the defense gave up too many big plays and a special teams blunder made all of the difference early on.

Here’s everything we know following the close loss.
