7 Takeaways from the Bears’ shootout loss to the Dolphins

From Justin Fields’ stardom to Chase Claypool’s encouraging debut, here are our takeaways from Sunday’s game between the Bears and Dolphins.

The Chicago Bears may be piling up losses, but when it results in some of the greatest quarterback play in franchise history, it somehow feels okay. The Bears fell to the Miami Dolphins 35-32 on the lakefront on Sunday, but once again saw an offensive explosion thanks to quarterback Justin Fields. The second-year signal caller was sensational in a record-setting performance, totaling four touchdowns on the day.

While the offense continues to do its thing, the defense is becoming a shell of itself. The Dolphins were able to score at will against the Bears, having wide-open receivers and gaping holes for the running backs for much of the day. Despite those issues, however, the win was within reach for the Bears late, but a missed penalty and a brutal fourth-down drop ended those hopes.

If you ask any player, they’ll tell you there’s no moral victories in the NFL. But fans have a different perspective as they see a powerful offense for the first time in years that has the potential to carry the Bears for the foreseeable future. Here are our takeaways from Sunday’s game.

Points were aplenty when the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins faced off at Soldier Field on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Bears, they were unable to score any more when it truly counted at the end of the game. The Bears fell to the Dolphins 35-32 to fall to 3-6.

The quarterbacks on both teams stole the show, with Justin Fields and Tua Tagovailoa showing out both through the air and on the ground for the Bears and Dolphins, respectively. The Bears unleashed an elite offense for the third week in a row, but the defense gave up too many big plays and a special teams blunder made all of the difference early on.

Here’s everything we know following the close loss.

5 Bold predictions for Bears vs. Dolphins

From Chase Claypool’s impactful debut, to bottling up Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, here are our bold predictions for Bears vs. Dolphins.

The Chicago Bears are set to square off against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and will look a bit different than they did during their last game.

Gone is star linebacker Roquan Smith, who was traded to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. Coming in, however, is wide receiver Chase Claypool, who was acquired in a separate deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers just ahead of the trade deadline.

The Bears are beefing up their offense, but have lost a bit on defense, which could make Sunday’s matchup with the Dolphins even more interesting. Miami boasts one of the better offenses in the league and the Bears will have a tough challenge ahead trying to contain players like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

On the other side of the ball, quarterback Justin Fields and the offense will look to continue their solid play as of late against a vulnerable Dolphins defense. With new weapons and changes across the entire team, we could be in for some interesting performances. Here are our bold predictions for Bears and Dolphins.

6 Dolphins players to watch against the Bears

Here are six players from the Dolphins we’ll be watching this weekend against the Bears.

It’s been a week of change for the Chicago Bears, but they can’t dwell on it for long as they’re set to welcome in the Miami Dolphins to Soldier Field on Sunday to try as they attempt to get back on track. The Bears (3-5) are coming off a blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys and, for the second week in a row, jettisoned a defensive leader when they traded Roquan Smith to the Baltimore Ravens. But they turned around and bolstered their offense, however, acquiring wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who should be available for Sunday’s matchup.

The Dolphins (5-3) did some work themselves during the NFL trade deadline. After defeating the Detroit Lions last Sunday, they notably acquired star pass rusher Bradley Chubb from the Denver Broncos and signed him to a lucrative extension. Miami’s defense got better, but it’s their offense that should scare everyone. Here are six Dolphins players to watch when they face the Bears this weekend.

Bears OC Luke Getsy expects Chase Claypool to play on Sunday vs. Dolphins

Chase Claypool is still getting settled with the Bears, but the expectation is that he will make his debut this Sunday against the Dolphins.

Fans of the Chicago Bears won’t have to wait long to see the team’s newest addition in action. Just days after the Bears acquired wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the plan is for him to suit up and be available for their Week 9 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. At least that’s what offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is saying.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Getsy discussed how quickly Claypool is getting integrated with the Bears offense and feels confident they can bring him along efficiently.

“I think he’ll be okay, we’ll make sure he’s ready to rock and roll for whatever is role might be come Sunday,” Getsy said.

He then confirmed with 670 The Score’s Mark Grote that Claypool will have a role to play come game time, though the question remains of just how much.

“The level of what that looks like, we’re not quite sure though,” he clarified.

Getsy won’t divulge any information that could compromise a competitive advantage, but it sounds like there will be a handful of plays that will involve Claypool, with more coming as the season continues. Claypool was acquired from the Steelers for a 2023 second-round pick just prior to Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. In eight games for the Steelers this season, he had 32 catches for 311 yards and one score. He also threw for one touchdown as well.

Claypool and the Bears square off against the Dolphins on Sunday, beginning at noon CT.

The Chicago Bears kicked off an anticipated preseason with a 20-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field. While there were several players who made impacts during Saturday’s win, there was one player in particular who stole the show.

The Bears’ player of the game is 11th overall pick Justin Fields, who made his hotly-anticipated debut and was everything Bears fans had been hoping for.

Fields played in the second and third quarters, where he completed 14-of-20 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown, adding five rushes for 33 yards and a score on the ground. Fields flashed his natural arm talent and mobility, which allowed him to evade the pass rush and make plays, including an eight-yard scramble for a touchdown.

“I was calm as could be today,” Fields said.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy certainly loved what he saw from Fields in his first game action.

“Everybody here is super excited about the way that he played today,” Nagy said. “You know, we all want the same thing. We understand the buzz. We understand the excitement. That’s why we drafted him you know what I mean. That’s why we drafted him.

“We want to make sure that we continue to go through this thing and we understand the process and this is one game that he came in here and now the beautiful thing is we get to get more practices in and get to see how he comes back next week, you know, against Buffalo and he’s going to have another chance.”

Watch every play of Bears rookie Justin Fields’ preseason debut vs. Dolphins

Re-live every play of Justin Fields’ preseason debut in the Bears’ 20-13 win over the Dolphins.

Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields made his preseason debut on Saturday, where he led Chicago to a 20-13 win over the Dolphins at Soldier Field.

And considering the hype that followed Fields from the college level to the pros, the hype was certainly worth it.

Sure, it was just a preseason game. Yes, he got off to a rocky start. No, this one preseason game doesn’t mean the Bears suddenly have a Hall of Fame quarterback. But it’s an encouraging start to Fields’ young NFL career, and it showed that Fields has the skillset to become a star quarterback in this league.

For all of the “wow” plays Fields has made during training camp, viewers had a front-row seat to Fields’ special skillset, where he flashed his natural arm talent and utilized his mobility to escape pressure and make plays.

And because it’s not too early to relive Fields’ preseason debut, NFL.com released a video of every Fields play from the Bears’ win over the Dolphins.

Bears’ Justin Fields says NFL game was ‘kind of slow to me’

Bears rookie QB Justin Fields impressed in his preseason debut, where he said the speed of the NFL game was ‘kind of slow’ to him.

Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields made his highly-anticipated debut Saturday against the Dolphins, where he helped lead Chicago to a 20-13 victory at Soldier Field.

While Fields got off to a rocky start, he quickly settled in and was able to orchestrate three consecutive scoring drives, which highlighted his impressive skillset, namely his mobility and his natural arm talent.

Fields completed 14-of-20 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown for a 106.7 passer rating. He added five rushes for 33 yards and a score. But it wasn’t the stats that told the story, it was the eye test. For his first NFL game action, Fields looked poised, despite some struggles on the offensive line and receivers struggling to find separation.

After the game, Fields was asked about adjusting to the speed of the NFL game. But for Fields, he didn’t seem fazed.

”It was actually kind of slow to me to be honest,” he told reporters after the game.

Following Fields’ impressive performance, there are naturally going to be questions about why Andy Dalton has been named the starter before the start of the season. While Dalton played just two series, the first-team offense was lackluster and rather uninspired, going three-and-out on both drives.

Granted, the Bears were down three starting offensive linemen, which was evident. But there was a lack of rhythm, which seemed to carry over from the joint practices against Miami earlier in the week.

While Fields’ performance against the Dolphins probably won’t be enough to change Matt Nagy’s mind about riding with Dalton as the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1.

But if Fields continues to build on Saturday’s debut during the final two preseason games, it’ll be hard for Nagy to justify going with Dalton if Fields gives the Bears the best chance to win.

Strap in, the preseason just got interesting.

Bears vs. Dolphins preseason game recap: Everything we know

The Bears rallied behind rookie QB Justin Fields to defeat the Dolphins 20-13 in their preseason opener. Here’s our game recap.

In the long-awaited first preseason game for the Bears, they rallied back from an early lead by the Dolphins to win 20-13 with help from rookie quarterback Justin Fields. This game was probably the most anticipated preseason game for a lot of fans, especially Bears fans. A lot of hype came from the anticipation of this year’s rookie class, and they didn’t disappoint.

The first half was lackluster, to say the least. Quarterback Andy Dalton started the game and had two drives with the Bears that resulted in three-and-outs. The first half got off to a slow start due to penalties and poor separation from receivers. Once the rookie (Fields) entered the huddle, it seemed like the energy was uplifted and the offense started moving, a lot due to his mobility. On a positive note, the Bears probably had the best third-quarter football they’ve played since the Matt Nagy era, scoring 14 points with Fields under center.

On the defensive side of the ball, the pass rush got after it today but was unable to come away with any sacks against Miami’s first-team offense. Safety DeAndre Houston-Carson did, however, come away with an interception on Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, which was ultimately dunked in the “takeaway bucket.” The second half for the defense was similar to the offense as they played better. They didn’t allow any points and recorded three sacks. With this being Sean Desai’s first game as a defensive coordinator, it was encouraging as players, for the most part, were put in a position to succeed.
