It was only a matter of time until we started to learn the fate of some of college football’s postseason bowl games and Friday brought news that the annual bowl game played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California won’t be played this winter.

The game, most recently known as the RedBox Bowl was canceled on Friday and was first reported by Brett McMurphy.

The game matches up Big Ten and Pac-12 teams each year. Last year it was Cal beating Illinois, 35-20.

Since debuting in 2002 the game was played from 2002-2013 at AT&T Park in San Francisco before moving to Levi’s Stadium in 2014 and remaining there since.

The game has had a handful of names over the years: San Francisco Bowl, Emerald Bowl, Fight Hunger Bowl and Foster Farms Bowl before being named the Red Box Bowl in 2018.

The college bowl schedule now sits at just 41 games.

Prediction

California 27, Illinois 24

Moneyline (ML)

California (-264) is a rather moderate favorite, but don’t expect the Golden Bears to run away from the Fighting Illini (+205). If you’re looking for an ML play, the Illini are much more attractive, paying just over 2-to-1 (Every $1 wagered on the Illinois ML will profit $2.05 if it wins).

Against the Spread (ATS)

ILLINOIS (+5.5, +105) is the way to go. This one should be a very entertaining and close battle. This season, the Illini just found ways to cover, although bettors will have some pause after they inexplicably got trucked in their season finale against the lowly Northwestern Wildcats.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 41.5 (-129) is the play, just make sure you forget that Cal played to a 10-7 loss last season in the Cheez-It Bowl against the TCU Horned Frogs. This game won’t be a track meet, but a line of just over 40 is too low.

Redbox Bowl makes embarrassing mistake about Cal’s name on official T-shirts

Come on, Redbox Bowl.

Image growing up a fan of Cal football, spending many days and nights of your youth dreaming about one day playing for Cal and representing your favorite school in the the legendary Redbox Bowl.

Then you finally get to Cal, make the football team, and find yourselves heading to the Redbox Bowl… only to find out the official Redbox Bowl T-shirts don’t even know the correct name of your school.

That just has to feel awful but that’s what has happened this year as the Redbox Bowl, which is one of many meaningless bowl games that will be played over the next couple weeks, referred to Cal as “Cal State” on T-shirts:

Cal, of course, is a part of the University of California system. Cal is not Cal State, which is a totally different school. Cal, meanwhile, is in Berkley which isn’t that far from San Francisco which is near Santa Clara, where this game will be played.

You’d think with all the money these meaningless Bowls are making off these kids that they could take a second and make sure everything is right on the merchandise.

But alas, that’s not the case. Why take the time to get things right when you can use that time counting all that money!?
