Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (36-29-7) take on the Carolina Hurricanes (45-21-7) Thursday at PNC Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes at Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Wings have been grounded of late, going 3-6-1 in their last 10. They dropped Tuesday’s tilt 4-3 in overtime to the Washington Capitals. That loss dropped the Wings 2 points behind the Caps for the final Wild Card spot. C Dylan Larkin is getting reacclimated after missing 3 weeks due to injury. He has 2 goals and an assist in 3 games since returning.

The Canes have slipped up, losing 2 of the last 3, with the latest a 4-1 setback against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Carolina was -190 favorites in that loss. They took 39 shots on goal, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Canes are solid in 2nd in the Metropolitan Division just 3 points behind the New York Rangers for the top spot.

Red Wings at Hurricanes projected goalies

James Reimer (9-7-2, 2.98 GAA, .907 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (10-1-0, 2.05 GAA, .925 SV%, 1 SO)

Reimer has won 3 straight starts with his latest last Thursday over the New York Islanders. He stopped 33 of 36 shots fired his way in the 6-3 win. He’s 3-1-0 with a 3.18 GAA and .907 SV% this month.

Andersen has been dominant since his return from a 4-month injury. His last start was in the 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday, when he stopped 32 of 33 shots fired upon him. Andersen is 6-0-0 this month and has allowed just 8 goals in 6 games.

Red Wings at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The Canes are heavy favorites, but they’re far too expensive to consider. It’s even more outlandish when you consider that Detroit needs this game more to stay in contention. Carolina is great at home at 24-9-4, and the Wings are just 15-18-2 on the road.

I like SEBASTIAN AHO OVER 2.5 SHOTS (-160) here. He has 3+ SOG in 3 of 4 and has done so in both games against Detroit this year.

Puck line/Against the spread

I like Detroit’s side here, and I thought it would be a little more expensive. As mentioned, they need this game more as we head to the finish line. The Canes have dropped 2 of 3 and could be a little complacent.

Take RED WINGS +1.5 (-115).

Over/Under

I like the Under here, but I’d be more comfortable if it were 6.5. Both goalies have been solid. The Canes are 4-6 O/U in their last 10 while the Wings are 6-4. The Under cashed in the last 6 meetings between the teams, but the last game ended in a 4-2 final, which would push here.

LEAN UNDER 6 (-120).

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (17-25-9) travel to meet the Carolina Hurricanes (32-10-7) Thursday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings rolled up seven goals in a win against the Dallas Stars last Thursday, but they have gone back to their offensively-challenged ways with just one goal across the past two outings.

The Hurricanes clinched a spot in the postseason earlier this week. They’ll be very glad that the Red Wings aren’t going to be in the playoffs, as Detroit has won four of the previous seven meetings this season, including each of the past three.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +310 (bet $100 to win $310) | Hurricanes -375 (bet $375 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (+120) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-145)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (6-15-8, 2.83 GAA, .908 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (13-4-3, 1.94 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Greiss has lost just once in regulation across his past seven starts and eight appearances, including a 5-4 win in a shootout on April 10 in Raleigh against the Hurricanes. He is 1-1-0 with a 2.91 GAA and .921 SV% in two starts vs. Carolina this season.

Nedeljkovic has won five of his past six starts, going 5-0-1 during the span. And he topped the Red Wings in his most recent appearance against them on March 14 in Detroit, stopping 25 of 26 shots in the win. He is 2-0-0 with a 1.51 GAA and .951 SV% in two starts against the Wings this season.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 2

Money line (ML)

The Hurricanes (-375) will cost you nearly four times your potential return, and that’s risky business. They have lost four of seven to the lowly Red Wings (+310) this season, and if anything, Detroit is worth a small-unit play based on the previous head-to-head results.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The RED WINGS +1.5 (+120) are plus-money catching a goal and a half, and they’re a great play based upon their history against the Hurricanes -1.5 (-145) this season.

Carolina has clinched a playoff spot already, too, and while the Central Division title is definitely in play, we’ll see if they turn down the heat a little with an x- next to their name in the standings. The Canes looked good in a 5-1 win in Dallas after clinching, so the hunger might still be very much there.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-110) cashed in the most recent meeting in Raleigh, a 3-1 win by the Red Wings. The Under is also 2-1-1 in the past four meetings in this series, too.

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (14-23-6) play the second half of a two-game set with the Carolina Hurricanes (27-9-4) Monday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings picked up a 5-4 shootout victory Saturday and cashed as heavy underdogs at nearly 3-to-1. Detroit picked up at least one point in four of its past six games and hasn’t been a pushover lately, even for the top teams in the NHL.

The Hurricanes were dumped on home ice by the Red Wings after a two-game sweep of the visiting Florida Panthers. They also have two shutouts in their past four outings, one from Alex Nedeljkovic and one from Petr Mrazek.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +300 (bet $100 to win $300) | Hurricanes -375 (bet $375 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (+115) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-140)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (4-15-6, 3.17 GAA, .897 SV%) vs. Petr Mrazek (4-1-1, 1.47 GAA, .943 SV%, 3 SO)

Greiss wasn’t terribly sharp in the shootout against the Hurricanes, but he deserved the win. Detroit has provided very little offensive support for him plenty of times where he has been on top of his game and he took an undeserved loss.

Mrazek had his worst outing of the season against his former organization Saturday. He had picked up three shutouts in his first six outings of the 2021 campaign before Saturday’s offensive barrage by the Red Wings.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Red Wings 2

Money line (ML)

The Hurricanes (-375) will cost you nearly four times your potential return, and that’s rather expensive considering the Red Wings just pulled the upset Saturday. Let that be a cautionary tale.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The HURRICANES -1.5 (-140) will still cost you some juice laying the goal and a half, but it’s not nearly as risky as just playing the money line straight up. Carolina won by three goals in each of its last two victories.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-105) is the lean there. The Over has edged the Under 5-4 in the past nine games for the Hurricanes, including an Over result Saturday.

The Over is 3-0-1 in the previous four games for the Red Wings, too, and they coughed up 11 goals in their past two outings.

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (13-23-6) play the first of a two-game set with the Carolina Hurricanes (27-9-3) Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings showed some signs of life with a 5-1 win in Tampa on April 4, and they picked up at least one point in four of six games from March 27-April 4. However, they were swept by the Nashville Predators in a Tuesday-Thursday set, outscored 10-3 on home ice.

The Hurricanes have rattled off three straight victories to vault to the top of the Central Division, including a two-game sweep of the Florida Panthers. Goaltenders Alex Nedeljkovic and Petr Mrazek recorded shutouts in two of those three wins.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:25 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +290 (bet $100 to win $290) | Hurricanes -350 (bet $350 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (+105) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-125)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (3-15-6, 3.14 GAA, .897 SV%) vs. Petr Mrazek (4-1-0, 0.99 GAA, .962 SV%, 3 SO)

Greiss has actually been pretty sharp recently, allowing three or fewer goals in each of his four starts in April.

He has just one win to show for his efforts, however. The offense has also provided just 10 goals across his past six starts.

Mrazek, the former Red Wings backstop, returned from thumb surgery on April 4 after a two-month absence.

He picked right up where he left off, posting two wins, including a shutout of the Dallas Stars last Sunday. Three of his five starts have resulted in shutouts, including a 14-save shutout at Detroit on Jan. 14.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The Hurricanes (-350) will cost you three and a half times your potential return, and that’s just too expensive.

The Red Wings (+290) have actually won two of the five previous meetings this season, although both came on home ice at Little Caesars Arena.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The HURRICANES -1.5 (-125) are not quite as expensive on the puck line, and they have won each of their past two games by three goals after their previous four wins were all one-goal victories. Two of their three wins against the Red Wings have also covered the puck line.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is a decent play as Mrazek just isn’t giving up very much this season. The Under should always be the play when a guy with shutouts in 60 percent of his season starts.

And remember, the Red Wings rank dead-last in the NHL with 2.2 goals scored per game, and they’re 30th on the power play at 11.9 percent.

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (7-15-3) travel to meet the Carolina Hurricanes (15-6-1) Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +250 (bet $100 to win $250) | Hurricanes -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (-110) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (1-11-3, 3.37 GAA, .885 SV%) vs. James Reimer (10-3-0, 2.90 GAA, .902 SV%)

Greiss is projected to start after Jonathan Bernier was pulled from Tuesday’s start against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Greiss has just one victory but has deserved more. He made 40 saves on 42 shots in his first appearance of the season against the Hurricanes in Detroit Jan. 14.

Reimer is likely to get the nod against the Red Wings in the first game in front of fans at PNC Arena this season. Reimer hasn’t faced the Red Wings yet this season.

Red Wings at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Red Wings 2

Money line (ML)

The Hurricanes (-300) are heavy favorites at home, and they will cost you three times your potential return. Carolina should be victorious on home ice, but over the long haul that’s not a good betting strategy.

AVOID.

C Vincent Trocheck has been red-hot for Carolina, scoring a goal in three straight games. If the Canes can win, it will be head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s 100th behind the bench in Raleigh.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The HURRICANES -1.5 (-110) are a better value at home at near even-money. Carolina won the season opener in Detroit by a 3-0 score, also covering the spread, but they were dropped 4-2 in the follow-up outing.

The Canes have covered the puck line in five of their past seven victories.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-135) is the play on the alternate line. The Over is 6-4-1 across the past 11 games for the Hurricanes, while the Red Wings hit the Over in three of their past four games.

The Red Wings allowed 4 goals per game across their past four outings, and they’re averaging a respectable 3.25 goals per game during the span. That’s a good recipe for Over results.
