No. 3 Texas enters Red River as the favorite over No. 12 Oklahoma

Texas is considered the 6.5 point favorite over Oklahoma this week.

According to BetMGM, No. 3 Texas (5-0) are the 6.5 point favorite over No. 12 Oklahoma (5-0) ahead of one of college football’s most heated rivalries this week. Since 2020, the spread has correctly picked every Red River game.

Just because the Longhorns are favored to win doesn’t mean it will happen. Every Texas fan knows the pain of heartbreaking losses when it comes to the team north of the Red River.

From last-second touchdowns to 49-0 victories, anything can happen in the Cotton Bowl. All previous statistics and records can be thrown out the window when it comes to these two teams.

No. 3 Texas will battle against No. 12 Oklahoma in Dallas on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

Does No. 3 Texas have a case as the best team in the country?

Has Texas played better than Georgia and Michigan so far?

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns have a case to be considered the best team in the country. Georgia (No. 1) and Michigan (No. 2) are currently ranked above Texas in the AP Top 25 Poll.

Looking at Georgia’s schedule, they are 5-0 with Power Five wins against South Carolina and Auburn, but seemingly struggled in those victories.

One of the primary reasons the Bulldogs are still No. 1 is because they’re coming off back-to-back national championships. Rankings are only applied to how well a team has done this year, not in years past. Georgia may still be dominant, but they’re not on the same level as 2021 or 2022.

The Michigan Wolverines are downright playing dominant football. Outscoring their opponents 172-30, their defense hasn’t allowed double-digit points in any game this year.

The Wolverines definitely have a case as the best team in the country, but they likely will not get a ranked opponent until they face off against No. 6 Penn State on Nov. 11th.

The argument that Texas should be No. 1 in the AP Poll is clear: they aren’t just beating teams, they’re embarrassing them.

In every game, Texas has scored at least 31 points and has won by double-digits. They also went into Tuscaloosa and beat Nick Saban and the Alabama dynasty, 34-24.

More recently, they dominated the then No. 24 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, racking up 661 yards of total offense.

The No. 3 Longhorns will have another tough opponent on Saturday, as they match up against No. 12 Oklahoma in the annual Red River Shootout. If they can manage a victory, Texas will likely get the No. 1 ranking they ultimately deserve.

Texas Football: Analyzing Oklahoma’s schedule so far

Looking at Oklahoma’s previous opponents and what lies next after Red River Rivalry.

Oklahoma hasn’t necessarily faced a tough opponent yet. After Saturday’s game against Texas, the Sooners have arguably the easiest path to the playoffs in all of college football. I get that you can only play who is in front of you, but the reason the Sooners’ overall statistics are eye-popping is because of their opponents.

I am not moved by a 73-0 victory over Arkansas State and a 66-17 win over Tulsa. Oklahoma also has victories over SMU (28-11), Cincinnati (20-6), and Iowa State (50-20).

No. 3 Texas will be the only ranked team that No. 12 Oklahoma has played and could be the last. The game on Saturday will be the ultimate test for both teams, and previous statistics and records do not matter.

Why? Because it’s the Red River Shootout. Nothing else matters besides the roaring crowd of Longhorns and Sooners combined, all screaming from the top of their lungs in a packed Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

Texas and Oklahoma will battle it out at 11:00 a.m. CT in their final Red River Shootout as a member of the Big 12 conference.

Social Media reacts to Oklahoma Sooners shutout loss to the Texas Longhorns

Shocking may not be the word to describe what happened to Oklahoma on Saturday in the Red River Showdown.

It was not a good day to be an Oklahoma Sooners fan. The Sooners were dominated in the Cotton Bowl by the Texas Longhorns 49-0 marking their third straight loss in Big 12 play. The first time since 1998.

Without Dillon Gabriel, the offense resorted to the wildcat and trick plays to try and manufacture yards. Ultimately, the lack of an adequate passing attack combined with an untimely move away from the running game marked disaster for an offense that only generated 195 total yards and 11 first downs.

Defensively, it was just as bad.

After a three-and-out on the opening drive, the Sooners couldn’t stop Texas for anything. They allowed 585 total yards of offense and nearly 300 yards rushing on the day.

As expected, Bijan Robinson was a load in the running game, rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Texas’ offensive line dominated in the running game and made life incredibly easy for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers was hardly under pressure, and when he was, he looked poised, throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns on the day.

Texas had their way with the Oklahoma Sooners today and absolutely dominated in the Red River Showdown.

Let’s take a look at how social media reacted to the Sooners’ loss.

Oklahoma safety Billy Bowman out for Red River Showdown

After suffering an injury against the TCU Horned Frogs, Billy Bowman will be unavailable for the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown.

After Billy Bowman suffered an injury in last week’s loss to TCU, the Oklahoma Sooners secondary struggled to slow down Max Duggan and the Horned Frogs. Questionable all week, Bowman won’t be playing today against the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Showdown.

Diamond Harmon was lost due to injury as well in last week’s loss. That leaves Trey Morrison, Justin Broiles, Key Lawrence, and Justin Harrington to man the safety spot.

Against Texas’ skill positions, the Sooners will face a stiff challenge. However, with a full week to prepare Bowman’s replacement, perhaps they’ll be better prepared than a week ago to slow down Xavier Worthy, Ja’Tavion Sanders, and Jordan Whittington in the passing game.

The other interesting nugget here is that Dillon Gabriel appears to be going through warmups with the Oklahoma Sooners. However, there’s still no indication as to his availability for today’s game.

As we inch closer to game time, we’ll continue to monitor Gabriel’s status.

Social Buzz: Sooner Nation ready for the Red River Showdown and to ‘Beat Texas’

Social Media reactions from Sooner Nation as Oklahoma prepares for the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Showdown.

The day is here and the time is now. The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns continue their rivalry in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Both teams come into the matchup 3-2, but the Longhorns have a bit more momentum this season despite alternating wins and losses through the first five games of the season.

But none of that matters. Everything that’s happened or will happen until kickoff gets washed away. The slate is clean for the Oklahoma Sooners. This is their chance to wipe away everything that’s happened for each of the last two weeks.

This is a game that’s been decided by a score or less in eight of the last nine matchups. It’s a game where Oklahoma comes in as the rare underdog. And even after what’s transpired the last two weeks, Sooner Nation is ready to roll to support the Oklahoma Sooners as they march into the Cotton Bowl to face their biggest rival.
