Report: Former Arizona signee Jamari Phillips commits to Oregon

After decommitting from Arizona, four-star shooting guard Jamari Phillips signs with Dana Altman and the Ducks.

The season is still five months away, but Dana Altman is always on the lookout for more talent and the 2024-25 roster just got a lot more talented.

According to On3.com, Oregon just received a commitment from four-star shooting guard Jamari Phillipsout of Glendale, Ariz.

This is a big change as Phillips has been an Arizona commit since 2022, but reopened his recruitment just last week. It didn’t take long for the Ducks to swoop in and sign the 6-foot-3 wing player.

He has a 93 rating on 247sports.com and a 0.9816 player composite on the site as well.

Phillips change of heart might have come about when Arizona’s superstar guard Caleb Love announced he would skip the NBA draft and return to Tucson for one more season. No doubt Phillips’ playing time as a freshman would have drastically been less than he thought.

Wisconsin makes the top five schools for a 2025 offensive tackle

Wisconsin makes the top five for a 2025 offensive tackle

Wisconsin made the top five schools for class of 2025 offensive tackle Matty Augustine.

Augustine is 247Sports’ No. 394 player in the class, No. 32 offensive tackle and No. 4 recruit from his home state of Connecticut. He is a three-star recruit on 247Sports, Rivals and On3.

Wisconsin made the cut along with Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. It should be noted that Augustine currently has four 247Sports crystal ball predictions to choose Notre Dame, including from Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

Wisconsin’s class of 2025 currently has seven commitments, all from three-star recruits. The group currently ranks No. 9 in a way-too-early look at the national rankings.

The Badgers finished the 2024 cycle with the No. 25 class in the nation. That group had a Blue Chip Ratio of 50%, signaling a potential step forward for the program’s recruiting prowess.

It’s still early, but Luke Fickell and his staff have a long way to go in 2025.

Ducks get commitment from Tyler Kinsman, top-ranked punter in 2024 class

Ducks get commitment from Tyler Kinsman, top-ranked punter in 2024 class

When you think of a punter/kicker, a player that stands at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds isn’t exactly the profile that comes to mind.

Unless that kicker is Tyler Kinsman.

The Nampa, Idaho native had offers from Boise State and Dartmouth before deciding to come to Eugene and be an Oregon Duck.

Kinsman is the top-ranked punter in the Class of 2024, according to Chris Sailer Kicking, and No. 8 by 247Sports.

Odds are Kinsman will be battling current punter Ross James for a job next season. James is just a redshirt sophomore and he’s established himself as one of the best punters in the conference. Oregon still needs to find an eventual replacement for Camden Lewis, who will be departing after this season as he is a senior.

The Mills Creek High School (Hoschton, Georgia) standout is the No. 16 edge and the No. 26 player in the state of Georgia in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.

Edwards (6-foot-5, 242 pounds) will choose among Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, TCU, Florida State and South Carolina.

Edwards is also being recruited as a tight end and is considered a “potential game changer on both sides of the ball” by 247Sports’ director of scouting Andrew Irvin.

Take a look at Edwards’ tape from the 2022 season here:

Wisconsin lands a commitment from a 2024 three-star safety

Wisconsin lands a commitment from a 2024 three-star safety

Wisconsin’s recruiting momentum in the class of 2024 continued as the program landed a commitment from three-star safety Raphael Dunn.

Dunn is the No. 679 player in the class, the No. 69 safety and the No. 12 player from his home state of New Jersey. His 6-foot 4-inch and 200-pound frame offers an intriguing fit in Mike Tressel’s defense.

The commitment brings Wisconsin’s total to 13 in the class, a group that ranks in the nation’s top 20. It comes on the heels of several big visit weekends in Madison.

Luke Fickell has done nothing but impress since being hired in late November. While his first recruiting class is far from complete, early returns are certainly promising.

Stay tuned throughout the summer as more high school recruits join the 2024 group in Madison.

5 star quarterback breaks down where LSU stands in his recruitment

Dante Moore is one of LSU’s top uncommitted targets.

Things are really starting to heat up in the race for the top available 2023 quarterbacks.

LSU may be focusing on Pittsburg (California) passer [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag], who recently took an official visit to Baton Rouge, but the Tigers remain in the mix for another elite prospect.

Detroit five-star [autotag]Dante Moore[/autotag] visited LSU on April 22, and it is currently listed as the favorite to land him on the On3 RPM. Moore, the No. 12 overall prospect and No. 4 quarterback per the 247Sports Composite, told On3’s Sam Spiegelman that the Tigers remain high on his list.

He had a strong relationship with the prior coaching staff, and he has formed a good bond with the new staff under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], as well. Several other schools remain in the mix, including Texas A&M — which he will visit this weekend — as well as Michigan and Oregon.

Kelly is still looking to land a signal-caller in 2023, and if he misses on Moore and Rashada, things may be starting to look bleak. The top two passers in the state of Louisiana are likely heading elsewhere, as [autotag]Arch Manning[/autotag] doesn’t seem to have much interest while [autotag]Eli Holstein[/autotag] is committed to Alabama.

The Tigers’ quarterback room is in solid shape for the near future with [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] on campus, but landing a player like Moore would be a big get for Kelly.

College football news: five-star quarterback has several scholarship offers

Biggest letdown since the 2019 Michigan game?

When I was 17 years old and a senior in high school I remember just a day or two after my beloved Chicago Cubs choked against the Florida Marlins in the National League Championship Series that Dan Patrick was hosting SportsCenter one evening when they landed an interview with Steve Bartman.

Or so they thought.

After a couple minutes of discussion about the infamous foul ball that played a part in the Cubs collapse, a Patrick question about Bartman being able to stay in the Chicago area was met with a reference to the Howard Stern Show that I’ll let you listen to yourself.

Anyway, Patrick responds by simply saying, “We’ve been had.  That wasn’t Steve Bartman.”

Ladies and gentlemen, tonight I’d like to inform you that we at Fighting Irish Wire as well as countless college football fans nationally have been had.

Five-star quarterback [autotag]Dante Moore[/autotag] was supposed to make an announcement Tuesday night along with the Hayes Fawcett account.  Much was made from many, ourselves included, about what that announcement might be.

[lawrence-related id=55727]

Well, we’re here to tell you what Moore shared with the world tonight and that is that he is a young man with several football scholarship offers.

Friends, we just witnessed the 2022 college football version of Geraldo opening Al Capone’s vault.

Well played, young Dante.  Well played.

On3’s ‘prediction machine’ gives Alabama the edge in QB Arch Manning’s recruitment

Alabama appears to be the favorite in Arch Manning’s recruitment, according to On3’s ‘prediction machine’.

Nick Saban and Alabama have had their eyes on 2023’s No. 1 overall prospect and five-star QB Arch Manning, yes, from the very same line of Manning’s you’re accustomed to, for quite a while now.

The recruiting process of Manning has been a stressful one for Crimson Tide fans, let alone the coaching staff.

The 6-4, 215-pound quarterback would be welcomed with open arms by any school in the country based on talent alone. However, with his Manning surname comes plenty of scrutiny and attention, perhaps the most in the history of modern college football recruiting.

On Tuesday, On3 released its latest prediction machine update for Arch. Alabama has emerged as the new favorite. On3 gives the Crimson Tide a 30.1 percent chance of landing the five-star quarterback.

Georgia, however, isn’t too far behind. The Bulldogs sit second at 24.9 percent. Texas (19.6 percent), Ole Miss (12.9 percent) and Clemson (four percent), round out the prediction’s top five.

For the Tide, landing a QB like Manning would be a huge addition. It’s likely inevitable that 2021’s Heisman Trophy-winning QB Bryce Young will leave the Capstone following his junior season, opening the door for Arch to contribute at least a couple of solid years as a starter, given his development isn’t hindered by injury or other elements.

Nick Saban speaks on Alabama’s clean slate on ‘paying players’ before NIL

Nick Saban had something to say to TV pundits claiming that every big program paid players prior to NIL.

The sports media world loves to assume that every big-time program in college football compensated their high-value prospects with fiat cash.

You see it on ESPN all the time. The former players on the network even ascertain that top-notch universities have been paying players since long before the NIL (name, image and likeness) rule came to be.

Do those guys know something that the rest of us do not? Were they paid as student-athletes? They seem to have a lot of knowledge on the subject, but never elaborate on how they know.

Nick Saban found himself on the subject during practice for the Reese’s Senior Bowl in an interview with ESPN. Expounding on the ramifications that the NIL rule has had on the sport and recruiting, Saban went into detail about his reservations regarding the rule.

“When we start using name, image and likeness for a kid to come to our school, that’s where I draw the line,” he said, via ESPN. “Because that’s not why we did this.

“I hear these crazy people on TV who say now you’re doing it above board. We never did it. We never did it. We never cheated to get a player. We never paid players to come to our school.

“And now that’s actually happening. People are making deals with high school players to go to their school.”

This controversy isn’t likely to go away any time soon, but Saban was clear in asserting that Alabama hasn’t paid players to attend the Capstone during his tenure.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all things Crimson Tide.
