Cowboys News: Updates on Tyron, Pollard, Steele; 2 mocks get wacky

Stephen Jones says several key Cowboys are on track for 2023; exploring superstar extensions, and which Cowboy is it just not working with? | From @ToddBrock24f7

More updates from Stephen Jones in Indianapolis on Tuesday. The Cowboys EVP had encouraging news for several star players, though Dallas fans have seen lately that predicting injury-recovery timetables is less than an exact science. Jones talked about Tyron Smith’s status and contract, and he revealed that the club is thinking about extensions for two fourth-year playmakers.

Elsewhere, we’re looking at the unique position that Terence Steele is in and what the Cowboys might do about that, we’re tipping our hat to the Cowboys’ strength and conditioning staff for being a one-of-one within the NFL, and we’re getting brutally honest about which Cowboy it’s simply not working out with. All that, plus a host of mock drafts, some with strange results: why it seems like Mel Kiper Jr. is trolling America’s Team… and who would Dallas end up with if free agency worked like a draft? Cowboys fans may not like this any better than what they already have. That’s up in New sand Notes.

Nets’ Spencer Dinwiddie says team ‘didn’t match’ Giannis’ performance

Spencer Dinwiddie reacts to how the Nets didn’t match Giannis’ heightened performance.

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie has had his share of big moments in the NBA as he’s shown that he can be a clutch player when called upon. However, during his time with the Nets, he has shown to be one of the more candid players in the league during his interviews with the media.

In Tuesday’s 118-104 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Dinwiddie had 26 points and eight assists as he gave his best effort to help Brooklyn end  Milwaukee’s winning streak at 14 games. However, Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo had different ideas for how the game was going to go as he had 33 points and 15 rebounds in the contest.

Despite Dinwiddie having one of his better games as a member of the Nets, the former Dallas Maverick wasn’t able to help the team overcome the star power of Antetokounmpo in the end. The Bucks used a dominant third quarter to put the game out of reach and that led to Brooklyn head coach Jacque Vaughn emptying his bench with a little under five minutes to go in the game. Dinwiddie reacted to Giannis’ dominance and where Brooklyn went wrong in the second half:

“I don’t think there’s many players in the league that can guard him (Giannis Antetokounmpo) one on one. Obviously, we’re not necessarily the tallest team in the world, biggest in the world. But, we just got to build that wall. And, our activity level should just be extremely, extremely high and try to force turnovers and be active. Maybe, we can take some charges as well. I don’t think we got any. You know, we had a couple of possessions in the first half where we kind of stepped in front or he kind of traveled or whatever. So, things of that nature. I’m just saying like that type of activity that we’ll put our bodies in front of him. But yeah, no, I mean, he turned it up a notch and we didn’t match it.”

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors’ comeback run in third quarter on way to win vs. Blazers

The Warriors outscored the Blazers 39-17 in the third quarter to spark a comeback run on the way to their third consecutive win, 123-108.

Riding a two-game winning streak, the Golden State Warriors started out ice cold on Tuesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers. Behind Damian Lillard and Jerami Grant, the Blazers cruised to a commanding lead over the Warriors on Tuesday night at Chase Center.

As the Warriors looked to be headed towards a loss, the Blazers increased their lead to as much as 23 points. However, it wasn’t enough. After a vintage third-quarter run sparked a comeback, the Warriors never looked back.

Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole combined for 24 points in the third quarter as the Warriors outscored the Trail Blazers 39-17.

Following their emphatic third-quarter performance, the Warriors were able to complete the comeback and steal their third consecutive win, 123-105.

Poole led the Warriors with 29 points on 10-of-24 shooting from the floor with six assists and five rebounds in 33 minutes. Thompson continued his strong run with 23 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field with three made triples.

Along with a highlight-reel slam dunk, Jonathan Kuminga added 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor in 25 minutes off the bench on Tuesday night.

Following Golden State’s comeback win over Portland, the NBA community on Twitter exploded with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Tuesday night.

Nets’ Mikal Bridges reacts to disappointing second half against the Bucks

Mikal Bridges reacts to the poor third quarter that the Nets had against the Bucks on Tuesday.

Brooklyn Nets forward Mikal Bridges has already had some big games for the team during his brief tenure. He’s had to adapt to a different role with this team as he’s needed to essentially be the best player on the team on both ends of the floor in order for the Nets to have a chance to win.

In Tuesday’s 118-104 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Bridges had 31 points and five assists while playing good defense on Bucks stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. Bridges was able to make shots from all over the court and was one of the driving forces for Brooklyn to build a 15-point lead in the first half.

However, things changed in the second half as Milwaukee’s supporting players started to wake up. Even with Antetokounmpo leaving the game with 5:04 left in the third quarter because he picked up his fourth foul, Milwaukee finished the period on a 18-7 run. Bridges spoke postgame about what went wrong in the third quarter that appeared to cost the Nets the game:

“We weren’t there. We weren’t in our shifts and transition, not getting back as hard and then, Giannis (Antetokounmpo) got going, got to the line, got the and-ones and dunking and got them going. So, we just had to get back, had that mindset coming out. But, hey (the Bucks) dominated the second half, but it started with us in that third.”

John Lynch on decision to delay Brock Purdy’s surgery

John Lynch explained why Brock Purdy’s surgery got pushed back, and when the 49ers expect the QB to undergo surgery.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was supposed to have surgery on Feb. 22 to either repair or reconstruct his torn UCL. The day before his surgery, news broke that his procedure would be delayed until at least early May. General manager John Lynch on Tuesday provided some clarity on that decision-making process.

While the 49ers would like to have Purdy back as quickly as possible, Lynch from the NFL combine said the long-term view was important when considering all options with the elbow surgery. He also indicated Purdy’s surgery would happen during the first week of March.

“That’s a tough decision to make, but I really appreciate the courage and the conviction to make that decision,” Lynch said. “It’s all about the best outcome. Is it ideal? No, for a variety of reasons, time being number one you want every waking minute that you have, but ultimately, he’s 22 years old. We want the best outcome. And that’s where Dr. Meister made a really tough decision and we’re very appreciative. And he’s done thousands of these surgeries and when you have all the swelling out, when you have all the stiffness out, is when he’s had the best success with the outcomes. And so, we’re very thankful and we’re hopeful that when they meet down in Arizona this week they can move forward and then it would be early next week as to when they would go in there and have the surgery.”

The estimated timelines for return have been pretty consistent. If Purdy needs a repair, his timeline for return is slated for six months. If he needs a reconstruction it would likely be a 9-to-12 month recovery timeline.

Lynch said at the combine that the team won’t ultimately determine a timeline until after the surgery is performed since the way Purdy tore his UCL is atypical.

“There’s a variety of different timeframes and Dr. Meister had a great line that I can’t share with you, but it was very clever just about how he doesn’t have a crystal ball and every player’s different,” Lynch said. “Every person’s different, so timelines are just that, they’re guidelines, but we’ll see. The reality is the majority of these are done on baseball players. This is not a baseball injury. Even the way in which it happened, Brock’s going to throw on and a 250-pound man with an opposing force, it’s a different injury and so, the outcomes are different and we’ll see where it goes.”

Now the team is up against the clock with trying to get him back for the start of the regular season and determining what they need to do to fill out their QB room in free agency, which begins March 13.

While this season will surely be front of mind for the 49ers, there’s a chance Purdy is their franchise QB. That’s why the long-term view is so important, and the team appears ready to let doctors take whatever time they need to ensure whenever Purdy does return he’s doing so at full strength with minimal risk of re-injury.

Jalen Green impresses in return, but Jamal Murray leads Nuggets past Rockets

#Rockets guard Jalen Green returned from a groin injury and played well in limited minutes, but Denver’s Jamal Murray was too much to handle in Houston’s 10th straight loss.

HOUSTON — The losing streak for the Rockets (13-48) is at 10 games after Tuesday’s 133-112 loss (box score) at Toyota Center. Led by 32 points from Jamal Murray, the victorious Denver Nuggets continue to own the Western Conference’s best record (44-19).

Murray, who was questionable to play pregame with a sore back, connected on 12-of-18 shots (66.7%) and 5-of-10 from 3-point range (50.0%). Following an historic 71-point outburst by Portland’s Damian Lillard on Sunday, it was the second straight game that Houston was torched by an opposing guard who shredded its defense.

Yet, when accounting for the superior competition, there were at least some positives for the young and rebuilding Rockets. For starters, they had Jalen Green successfully return from a groin injury, and Houston also expects to get injured backcourt mate Kevin Porter Jr. back in its lineup Wednesday versus Memphis.

While on a minutes limitation, Green was impressive with 17 points and 5 assists versus the Nuggets in 19 minutes, shooting 7-of-15 from the field (46.7%) and 3-of-7 on 3-pointers (42.9%).

Other key statistics for the Rockets included:

  • Tari Eason: 17 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists; 7-of-10 shooting (70.0%)
  • Daishen Nix: 14 points, 5 assists; 6-of-10 shooting (60.0%), 2-of-4 on 3-pointers (50.0%)
  • KJ Martin: 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals; 7-of-13 shooting (53.8%)
  • TyTy Washington: 12 points, 5 assists; 5-of-10 shooting (50.0%), 2-of-5 on 3-pointers (40.0%)
  • Josh Christopher: 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists; 5-of-11 shooting (45.5%), 1-of-3 on 3-pointers (33.3%)

Scroll on for highlights, analysis, and postgame interviews. Next up for the Rockets is part two of a tough back-to-back when Memphis visits Houston on Wednesday night. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. Central.

Could a tender tempt a team to take Terence Steele from Cowboys?

if the Cowboys don’t want to commit to Steele long-term, would it be better to get the draft compensation now rather than lose him for nothing in 2024? | From @ReidDHanson

The Cowboys have a handful of important roster decisions to make and not much time left to do it. NFL free agency begins on March 15 at 4:00 p.m., ET, which means Dallas must have their favorite pending free agents signed, tagged or tendered or they run the risk of losing said free agents to another team.

One player whose status is unresolved heading into the deadline is that of the Cowboys’ starting right tackle, Terence Steele.

With three accrued seasons under his belt, Steele becomes restricted free agent. The restricted status differs from the unrestricted variety because it allows Dallas to apply a one-year tender with the right to match any contract he may be offered by another team.

The Cowboys have three tender options at their disposal:

  1. A first-round tender which costs Dallas $6,005,000, but compensates them with a first-round pick if he signs elsewhere.
  2. A second-round tender which pays him $4,304,000 but compensates the Cowboys with a second-round pick if he goes elsewhere.
  3. A right of first refusal tender which pays him $2,627,000 but compensates Dallas nothing if he signs elsewhere.

All three tender options allow the Cowboys the right to match any contract he would receive by another team, but only the top two would compensate Dallas, should he move on.

Ellis is being rewarded following a sensational week at the plate.

Auburn sophomore [autotag]Bri Ellis[/autotag]’ amazing week caught the attention of the SEC’s front office as she was named the conference’s player of the week after batting .714 with seven multi-base hits and four home runs.

Her efforts went beyond the SEC, as she has been named National Player of the Week by Louisville Slugger and the NFCA. Ellis posted amazing numbers in Auburn’s 6-0 week which moved them to a 15-1 record heading into this week’s action.
