Georgia shows off 2022 national championship rings

Georgia unveils new natty rings…

The Georgia football program had a busy afternoon leading up to its annual G-Day spring scrimmage. Prior to kickoff, Georgia introduced Uga XI, also known as Boom, as its new mascot. Boom succeeds Uga X, who helped lead Georgia to back-to-back national titles.

Also prior to kickoff, Georgia unveiled its national championship rings for the 2022 team.

The Bulldogs became the only program in the College Football Playoff era to win back-to-back national championships, so it’s not surprising the ring leaned heavily into that accomplishment.

Georgia defeated TCU, 65-7, to win the national championship. It was the largest win in the history of any college football bowl game, and it capped a 15-0 season for the Dawgs.

Nets’ Cam Johnson says team needs to improve in other areas after Game 1 loss to the 76ers

Cam Johnson says that the Nets have to improve on the boards and with their three-point defense after Saturday’s Game 1 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

PHILADELPHIA — Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson has been in the playoffs before when he was a member of the Phoenix Suns. Being a part of six separate playoff series has shown Johnson what it takes to win in the postseason. That makes what he said on Saturday important for the rest of the team to know if they are going to pull off the upset.

“O-boards, three-point attempts, and three-point makes,” Johnson said when asked after Saturday’s 121-101 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers about where Brooklyn lost a game in which he scored 18 points. Philadelphia made a franchise playoff-record 21 threes out of 43 attempts (48.8%) in the game and they grabbed 14 offensive rebounds. The 76ers also scored 31 points off of 19 Brooklyn turnovers in a sloppy game by the Nets overall. “They (the 76ers) shot 19 more times than us. It’s hard to beat a team when they shoot 19 more times than you, they make 21 threes and come away with 14 offensive rebounds. It’s just, it makes it (winning) a lot harder,” Johnson said.

In a game where Brooklyn was primarily focused on not letting Joel Embiid get any easy looks, the Nets ended up letting three 76ers make at least three three’s, led by James Harden’s seven made three-pointers. The Nets’ strategy worked for the most part as Embiid had just 15 shots, but he was still able to score 26 points because he generated 11 free-throws. Brooklyn has to find a way to make the double-teams on Embiid and Harden more effective or think of a different defensive strategy.

Former Tulsa OL Jaden Muskrat receives Auburn offer

Could Muskrat join Dillon Wade in making the move from Tulsa to Auburn?

The spring window of the transfer portal officially opened on Saturday, and Auburn is already busy reaching out to potential suitors.

The day began with wide receiver [autotag]Tar’varish Dawson[/autotag] re-entering the transfer portal, becoming the second player to announce their intent to enter the portal, joining [autotag]Jeffrey M’Ba[/autotag].

On the flip side, a former Tulsa offensive lineman announced Saturday that he had received an offer from Auburn.

[autotag]Jaden Muskrat[/autotag], a rising junior from Bentonville, Arkansas, has received an offer from Auburn, becoming the second former Tulsa offensive lineman to hear from the Tigers. The first, [autotag]Dillon Wade[/autotag], followed his former head coach, [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag], to the Plains during the winter transfer portal window.

According to Pro Football Focus, Muskrat played 848 snaps last season primarily at right tackle, opposite Wade. He allowed just three sacks and four quarterback hits in 2022.

Auburn has added three talented, experienced linemen through the transfer portal in Wade, [autotag]Avery Jones[/autotag], and [autotag]Gunner Britton[/autotag]. If the Tigers were able to add Muskrat, it would allow for more opportunities for the offensive backfield to do damage this season.

Nets’ Mikal Bridges ‘just trying to win’ after Game 1 loss to the 76ers

Mikal Bridges says that he is ‘just trying to win’ after scoring 30 points in Saturday’s Game 1 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

PHILADELPHIA — Brooklyn Nets guard Mikal Bridges had a homecoming of sorts when he returned to Wells Fargo Center to face his hometown Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. While Bridges is from the Philadelphia area and was almost a 76er at the start of his career, since he is playing for the opponent, the fans welcomed him with boos. Even though it was good for Bridges to come home, all he wanted was something simple.

“I’m just more about trying to win,” Bridges said after scoring 30 points in Saturday’s 121-101 Game 1 loss to the 76ers. He ended the regular season having scored 30 points in 11 of his 27 games with Brooklyn. After Saturday’s loss, Bridges has now has had as many 30-point games as a Net (1) in the playoffs as he did in 35 such games during his time with the Phoenix Suns. “So, I think just got to rebound better and, you know, I think we had a lot of turnovers so just try to be together as a team and win,” Bridges continued.

The former Villanova Wildcat had 23 points in the first half on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, but he had just seven points after the half as he shot the ball just twice. The game started to get away from Brooklyn in the fourth quarter as Philadelphia turned a 12-point third quarter lead into a 18-point lead with five minutes left in the fourth. “It’s tough but it’s a series so we just got to watch film, get better, and do whatever we have to do to get ready for the next game. But, just learning right now, which I think we’ll be okay, just gonna get ready for next one,” Bridges explained.

Falcons would need ‘dream scenario’ to draft QB in top 10

According to an ESPN report, it would take a “dream scenario” for the Falcons to draft a QB in the top 10

When it comes to the NFL draft, every team has a dream scenario in which talent and need come together to create the perfect pick. Rarely do things work out that way, though.

The Falcons will go into the 2023 NFL draft with their third consecutive top-10 pick, but there are seven teams in front of them and it’s unclear which prospects will be available. This year’s class features four potential top-10 picks at the quarterback position.

Since Atlanta has a relatively unproven starter in Desmond Ridder, many draft experts think the team could take one of these four QB prospects. C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young are considered locks to go in the top five. That leaves Anthony Richardson and Will Levis, both of whom have top-30 draft visits with the Falcons.

However, just because the team is scouting Richardson and Levis doesn’t mean Atlanta would take either at No. 8 overall. According to ESPN’s Matt Miller, the Falcons are unlikely to pull the trigger on a QB unless Young or Stroud are on the board at pick No. 8:

According to the source, who has knowledge of their plans, the Falcons would need a “dream scenario” to take one of the quarterbacks in the top 10. My read on that is it would have to be Bryce Young (Alabama) or C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) being available. The source also mentioned wide receiver and safety as areas Atlanta will attack on Day 2 of the draft.

Something drastic would have to occur for either Young or Stroud to be available when Atlanta is on the clock, unless the team were to trade up into the top five.

The Falcons have aggressively addressed most of their needs going into the draft, freeing them up to target a variety of positions.

Atlanta added two potential starters over this past week alone, trading for cornerback Jeff Okudah and signing edge rusher Bud Dupree to a one-year deal.

Rich Rodriguez shares opinion on Hugh Freeze’s spring game idea

Jax State’s head coach loves Freeze’s proposed amendment, but would like to change one thing.

A handful of college football programs have wrapped up spring practice, while several others will conclude excercises over the next two weeks.

Spring practice has become the same song and dance for many seasons, as programs work to install new or improved systems while showcasing a small sample size of what’s to come in the fall in an open scrimmage for fans and media to attend.

In order to make spring practice worthwhile, and to provide a more entertaining product to fans, Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] recently suggested that he would be open to play in-state programs such as Troy or UAB for A-Day as opposed to playing the usual intrasquad scrimmage, with proceeds from the game going to a local charity.

Jon Sumrall of Troy and Trent Dilfer of UAB both have shared their desire to play Auburn or Alabama in a spring setting. Alabama’s Nick Saban is also open to the idea of playing an in-state team in the name of charity.

Earlier this week, another in-state head coach voiced his opinion on the matter.

Rich Rodriguez, the former West Virginia, Michigan, and Arizona head coach who is in his second season as the head coach at Jax State, says that he is willing to play Auburn or Alabama in the spring for the right price.

“Hell yeah, give me a million dollars, we’ll be down there (in Auburn or Tuscaloosa),” Rodriguez said in a recent interview with ABC 33/40.

Rodriguez went on to say that he likes the idea of charity being involved in the hypotheical plan, but has one stipulation. As the Gamecocks prepare to transition from FCS to FBS, Rodriguez would like to see some of the money earned from the game go back into his program.

“Tuscaloosa or Auburn, Alabama. I think it’s good for charity, too, but and you could control a little bit and it’d be fun, but I’d like to get a little cash for that,” Rodriguez said. “We got a lot of bills to pay. That new weight room and that new facility. Maybe even $500,000, we’ll go down there for that first spring game. We might get our brains beat in, but it doesn’t count, right? It doesn’t go on your record. If you want to get better as a football team, you play against the best. If you go down to Tuscaloosa, you’re gonna play against the best.”

On July 1, Jax State will officially become a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of Conference USA.

Auburn has played Jax State once in history, when the Gamecocks took Auburn to overtime on Sept. 12, 2015 before the Tigers prevailed, 27-20, at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Gamecocks have never played Alabama in football.

Atlanta Falcons draft two Georgia players in Mel Kiper’s NFL mock draft

Can you imagine???

ESPN’s Mel Kiper released his two-round NFL mock draft, which featured five Georgia Bulldogs going in the first two rounds.

In this mock draft, Kiper has the Atlanta Falcons drafting two Georgia Bulldogs – one in the first and one in the second round.

In 2021, Georgia set a school record when it had nine players selected in the draft. In 2022, the Bulldogs shattered that record, sending 15 players to the NFL, including five first-round picks from the defensive side of the ball.

Here is Kiper’s projection for the four Georgia Bulldogs in this first-round mock draft:

Four-star LB Joseph Phillips includes Auburn in top five

Auburn is currently the overwhelming favorite to land the Tuskegee product’s signature.

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and staff are looking to ride the momentum earned from the commitment of three-star tight end Martavious Collins by reeling in a local four-star linebacker for the 2024 recruiting cycle.

[autotag]Joseph Phillips[/autotag], a four-star linebacker from nearby Tuskegee, recently announced his top five college choices, and Auburn made the list. Phillips included Auburn in a list that features three other SEC programs in Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, with Clemson bringing up the rear.

Auburn is an overwhelming favorite to land Phillips, as the Tigers have one crystal ball prediction from 247Sports, and On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Auburn a 97.7% chance to earn his commitment. The coaching staff’s persistence has been vital in the Tigers becoming the favorite.

“I’d say (Auburn is) pushing pretty hard,” Phillips said in a recent interview with Auburn Undercover. “Any chance they get they want me to come up here, which is a good thing. I want to feel wanted, I say it all the time, it’s like having a girlfriend.”

Phillips is a four-star linebacker from Booker T. Washington High School in Tuskegee. According to 247Sports, Phillips is the No. 18 prospect from the state of Alabama for the 2024 class. The 6-3, 225-pound product recorded 75 tackles last season, with 19 being for loss.

According to Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover, Phillips will announce his commitment this summer after he takes his five unofficial visits.

Twitter reacts to Florida’s low-scoring spring game

Florida and SEC Twitter were not impressed with the Gators’ spring game performance.

The Florida Gators did not have the most entertaining spring game. Florida’s Orange team defeated the Blue team 10-7.

Spring games typically have some built-in advantages for the defense. The defense can sack quarterbacks more easily and the offensive scheme typically takes more practice to learn. However, quarterbacks don’t get hit in spring games.

Perhaps Florida will miss quarterback Anthony Richardson a great deal in 2023. The Gators face a tough slate in the fall, but have a considerable amount of talent.

Gerald McCoy announces retirement; Cowboys DL still in flux after brief 2020 tenure

Gerald McCoy’s time in a Cowboys uniform can be measured in minutes, but they’re still patching up the hole he left behind 3 years later. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The news crossed the wires Friday with relatively little fanfare. But reports that defensive tackle Gerald McCoy had announced his retirement from football were met by many a Cowboys fan with a knowing nod and a brief shake of the head about what might have been.

McCoy’s career wearing Cowboys gear can be measured in mere minutes, but the way it all went down has affected the team for years, and the hole that the six-time Pro Bowler left in the Dallas roster is one the front office is still trying to patch up.

The third overall pick in the 2010 draft, McCoy was a Week 1 starter in Tampa Bay as a rookie. Upper-body injuries plagued his first two seasons, though, causing him to miss 13 of 32 games in 2010 and 2011.

He came back on a mission the following year, earning the first of six straight Pro Bowl nods and starting a stretch of seven consecutive campaigns logging five or more sacks and averaging 36 tackles per season.

The Bucs released McCoy during the 2019 offseason; the Panthers signed him shortly thereafter. After one year in Carolina, the Oklahoma native joined the Cowboys in 2020, just as the Mike McCarthy era was beginning.

McCoy was to be a key piece of new coordinator Mike Nolan’s unit, with Maliek Collins suddenly gone, the Trysten Hill experiment just a year old, and third-round draft pick Neville Gallimore barely beginning his NFL adventure. The Cowboys even brought in McCoy’s former Carolina linemate Dontari Poe to beef up the new-look defensive front.

McCoy had signed a bargain of a contract to play for the Cowboys, and he further endeared himself to the fanbase during the COVID-wracked offseason in virtual interviews with his infectious personality and his willingness to speak up as a locker room leader during the tumultuous social upheaval that summer brought to both the country and the NFL. He even called out Cowboys owner Jerry Jones publicly in the wake of 2020’s equal-rights protests, beseeching the up-to-then silent billionaire to “say something… anything” on the occasion of Juneteenth, even before he himself had even suited up for the club.

It was a marriage with so much promise.

But on the very first day of padded practice with his new team, McCoy ruptured a quad tendon in one-on-one drills. He was done for the season. He was released via an injury clause in the contract he had just signed, to make room on the roster for another player, but the plan was for him to remain a part of the team, mentoring younger players as he worked to rehab his way back to the lineup.

“He expressed not only a desire to be here and be part of what we’ve started here,” McCarthy said at the time. “Obviously, he’s very comfortable, and this is where he wants to be. That’s exactly what he communicated to me.”

But his return to the Cowboys roster never happened. In fact, he couldn’t know it at the time, but his pro football carer had only a few more snaps in it.

McCoy was picked up by Las Vegas in August of 2021, almost a year to the day after his injury in Dallas. But during the Raiders’ overtime win over Baltimore in Week 1, McCoy’s left knee gave way and he had to be carted off the field after just nine defensive plays for the silver and black.

After not playing in the league in 2022, the 35-year-old McCoy retired Friday having never played in a postseason game.

Nevertheless, “I had a blast,” he said on The Carton Show.

The Cowboys’ interior defensive line has been in flux ever since McCoy went down that day at The Star. Poe and Everson Griffen were cut midseason. Nolan lost his DC job. Antwaun Woods left for Indianapolis. Carlos Watkins was brought in the next year; Osa Odighizuwa and Quinton Bohanna were drafted. Brent Urban came and went. John Ridgeway was drafted and then lost when the Cowboys tried to sneak him through waivers. Hill finally flamed out. Johnathan Hankins was acquired via trade and then re-signed to a new one-year deal. Watkins moved on in March.

Entering the 2023 draft, defensive tackle prospects like Michigan’s Mazi Smith, Pitt’s Calijah Kancey, and Wisconsin’s Keeanu Benton are ones that many think the Cowboys should be eyeing.

One can only wonder how much of that would have happened if McCoy had stayed healthy upon arriving in Dallas.

As it is, his brilliant pro career was cut short far too early and without many of the accolades that McCoy, by all rights, absolutely deserved.
