Florida football staff hits the road to evaluate recruiting targets

UF’s coaching staff is back on the road evaluating prospects as spring football kicks off in Florida.

Spring football has begun in the state of Florida and that means various Gators coaches are back on the road to see some of the top recruits on UF’s board in action.

[autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has done well to get several of the state’s top prospects on campus over the spring, and now he gets another chance to have his people evaluate those players. Napier has stressed the importance of his evaluation process from day one as the Gators’ head coach. Diagnosing the problem and finding the right tools to fix it is what he does best and it’s through a meticulous process.

Spring practices gave Napier and Co. a chance to see exactly what they had to work with, and it’s no secret that Florida lacks depth in various spots on the depth chart. Some of that will be addressed in the transfer portal but the long-term issues will need strong and focused recruiting to repair.

Here’s where some of the Florida football coaches are this Monday, according to 247Sports.

Michigan State football offers UM commit, 2023 4-star LB Raylen Wilson

Michigan State football is looking to poach an elite recruit from their top rival Michigan

Michigan State football is looking to poach an elite recruit from their top rival Michigan.

Raylen Wilson — a four-star linebacker in the 2023 class — announced on Friday that he’s received a scholarship offer from the Spartans. Wilson has been committed to the Wolverines since early December.

Wilson hails from Tallahassee, Fla. and is ranked as one of the top linebackers in the 2023 class. He is ranked as the No. 68 overall prospect and No. 7 linebacker in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the class.

Wilson holds offers from more than 30 schools so it’s not surprising to see Michigan State join the mix. However, it could be interesting and something to monitor should he decide to reopen his recruitment at some point.

4-star Michigan LB commit visiting Georgia this weekend

Georgia hosting a 4-star Michigan commit this weekend

The Georgia Bulldogs will be hosting a Michigan Wolverines commit this weekend.

4-star linebacker Raylen Wilson has been committed to the Michigan Wolverines since December of 2021.

He visited Georgia back in October, and according to his Twitter account he is set to make another visit again this weekend.

Wilson, out of Tallahassee, Florida, ranks as the nation’s No. 68 overall player in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports. He is the No. 7 ranked linebacker.

Last season at Lincoln High School, Wilson tallied 139 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles from his inside linebacker position.

His father, Robert Wilson, played wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints in the early 2000s.

Wilson visited the Florida Gators earlier in the week.

4-star Michigan commit says Gators are still in the picture following visit

A top-100 linebacker who is committed to Michigan was in Gainesville Tuesday and he says the Gators are still in play.

Four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson may be committed to the University of Michigan, but that isn’t stopping Billy Napier and the Florida Gators from trying to keep the Tallahassee recruit to stay in-state.

Wilson was one of the many recruits that visited the Swamp on Tuesday, March 15, and he came away impressed with the new staff and academic facilities, according to 247Sports. Inside linebackers coach Jay Bateman, defensive analyst Jamar Chaney and Napier were the main coaches involved in Wilson’s visit, but he spent time with most of the staff while on campus.

“When they were introducing themselves, it made me feel like they were genuine,” Wilson said. “(Their message) was they really don’t want me to go all the way to Michigan to play ball.”

After the Wolverines lost defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to the Baltimore Ravens, Wilson decided to take a look at his other options. He remains firm in his commitment to Michigan right now but says that Florida and Georgia are best positioned to land him if something changes.

“They are in the picture as of now,” he said. “If I was to de-commit from Michigan, or if anything happened with Michigan, they would definitely be in the race.”

A June visit to Ann Arbor should provide some clarity on Wilson’s position with UM. He’s since talked to the Wolverines’ new defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter, and been reassured that the scheme won’t be changing enough to affect his role on the team.

At Florida, Wilson knows that he would have a good chance to play early as Florida lacks a dominant third-down linebacker with enough versatility to be thrown anywhere on the field. He got a chance to see where he’d fit in with the defense as he sat in on a linebackers meeting before practice.

Napier has focused on in-state recruits early in the cycle. Wilson is one of the best in Florida. He’s ranked No. 13 in the state on the 247Sports composite and No. 68 overall. Stealing a top 100 recruit from a program that just made the College Football Playoff would be a very good look for the new staff.

Florida brings in impressive amount of recruits for first day of spring practice

Florida kicked off spring practice on Tuesday and a host of impressive recruits were in attendance.

Everyone is excited to see what Florida is like under new head coach Billy Napier. Fans and media members can only see snippets of what is going on in practices until the Orange and Blue game on April 16, but recruits can see whole practices when they visit the Swamp. On the first day of spring practice, Florida hosted over 15 prospects as it kicked things off on Tuesday.

Some of the elite names to stop by includes four-star linebacker Troy Bowles, four-star wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson, four-star pass-catcher Eugene Wilson III, four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons and four-star linebacker and Michigan commit Raylen Wilson.

Eugene and Rodgers sit pretty close to the top of Florida’s wide receiver board. This will be Eugene’s second visit to the Gators this month, naming the Orange and Blue his leader after his first visit. For Rodgers, this is his first visit under the new staff.

For Johnson and Simmons, it’s their first visit to see Florida under Napier too. Johnson’s name has soared up the Gators defensive blackboard after a strong performance at the Under Armour event in Miami last month. Also, Napier, Rob Sale and Darnell Stapleton have impressed Simmons so far and finally got him on campus.

Look for more prospects to visit throughout this week and then a flurry of them over the weekend.

4-star LB Raylen Wilson commits to Michigan over UGA

Four-star linebacker recruit Raylen Wilson has committed to the Michigan Wolverines over the Georgia Bulldogs.

Four-star linebacker recruit Raylen Wilson has committed to the Michigan Wolverines over the Georgia Bulldogs. Wilson, a member of the class of 2023, made his decision on Dec. 8.

The four-star linebacker’s decision comes several weeks before the two schools will face each other in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Raylen Wilson previously ruled out Penn State, Auburn and Oregon.

Wilson plays football for Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida. He is rated as the No. 6 linebacker in the country, the No. 14 recruit in the state of Florida, and the No. 74 recruit in the class of 2023.

The four-star linebacker has scholarship offers from top college football programs like Ohio State, Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, and more.

Wilson has a good frame at 6-foot-2 and weighs 215 pounds. Announced his commitment to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan via Twitter:

Raylen Wilson is an Under Armour All-American.Ā  He also runs track. Speed is coveted for modern linebackers in college football. In fact, Wilson even returns punts for Lincoln High School.

Dan Lanning and the Georgia defense really value speed and instincts at the linebacker position, but unfortunately, the Dawgs will have to look in another direction.

Raylen Wilson’s father, Robert Wilson, is a former Florida A&M and New Orleans Saints receiver.

Michigan football beats Georgia for elite 2023 recruit

HUGE recruiting win over ALL of the SEC powers that be!

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01eqbvp13nn1gy6hd4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Is this a sign of things to come on New Yearā€™s Eve? Regardless, Michigan football will take it.

One place that the Wolverines have not done a stellar job recruiting-wise is getting elite linebackers to come to Ann Arbor. Sure, theyā€™ve gotten players like Devin Bush and, more recently, Junior Colson. But itā€™s been few and far between. As of Wednesday, the narrative perhaps is changing.

Michigan and Georgia were the top two for 2023 Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson, who has 33 reported offers, including from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami (FL), Ohio State, and plenty others. Rated No. 62 overall by 247Sports, Wilson is the fourth-best linebacker in 2023 and the No. 14 player in the state of Florida.

However, on Wednesday, he spurned those other schools and committed to Michigan football. He made his announcement on CBS Sports HQ.

Watch his junior highlights:

George Helow was Wilsonā€™s primary recruiter for the Wolverines. According to 247Sports, he runs a blazing fast 11.19 100-meter dash.

On CBS Sports HQ, 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong said that Wilson wanted to commit now in order to be a leader and recruit other high-profile players to the school of his choice.

Wilson is the fourth commitment in the 2023 class for Michigan football, joining defensive tackle Joel Starlings, receiver Semaj Morgan, and kicker Adam Samaha. Heā€™s also the second commitment of the day for the Wolverines, with 2020 (yes, you read that right) four-star offensive tackle Andrew Gentry flipping to Michigan from Virginia.

Elite LB Raylen Wilson puts UGA in top 2 schools

Four-star linebacker recruit Raylen Wilson is nearing a college decision (commitment coming next week). He is considering UGA and Michigan.

Four-star linebacker recruit Raylen Wilson has named Georgia football to his top two schools. Wilson, a member of the class of 2023, is also considering Michigan.

The four-star linebacker plans to make his commitment to either UGA or Michigan on Dec. 8.

Raylen Wilson no longer has Penn State, Auburn and Oregon among his top schools.

Announced his final two schools via Twitter:

Raylen Wilson is an Under Armour All-American.Ā  He also runs track. Speed is coveted for modern linebackers in college football. In fact, Wilson even returns punts for Lincoln High School. Dan Lanning and the Georgia defense really value speed and instincts at the linebacker position.

Penn State football’s future looks great with the Class of 2022 and Class of 2023

Penn State is already off to a good start with the Class of 2023 after a stellar Class of 2022

As we all know, James Franklin has had a busy summer recruiting. Penn State still currently has the top recruiting class in 2022 with 14 four-stars and 10 three-stars.Ā

They have already begun bringing in talent for their 2023 class, with their first commit being an offensive lineman out of Ashburn, Virginia in Alex Birchmeier. Birchmeier was the number one ranked offensive lineman in the nation who had several offers across the NCAA, according to 247 Sports.Ā

Itā€™s early, but that one commit puts Penn State at 12th in the recruiting rankings for the class of 2023. Last season, the Nittany Lions started off to a disappointing 0-5 start, which was Franklinā€™s worst season since being hired as Penn Stateā€™s head coach in 2014.Ā

Penn Stateā€™s 2022 recruiting class is loaded. We talked about four-star quarterback Drew Allar last week during our countdown series, who is one of those guys that leads that class. One other player that Penn State scored big on earlier this summer was defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton. The 6-foot-5 and 250-pound recruit is very active with his hands and has good awareness as a defender. He will be an exciting guy to see the type of player he develops into.Ā

Another player to watch is a versatile athlete out of Argyle, Texas in Kristian Driver, son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver. Kristian Driver is a multi-talented player who brings a substantial amount of flexibility for the Nittany Lions. If thereā€™s anything we know about Franklin and his recruiting, itā€™s that he loves guys that can or are capable of playing multiple areas of the field.Ā

As we continue our recruiting watch throughout the season, there are two other players to keep an eye on.Ā

The first one is a 2023 four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson, who had Penn State in his top 12. There are no crystal ball predictions, but Wilson is still a player to monitor during the 2021 season.Ā

The other player to watch is a 2022 four-star wide receiver out of Richmond, Virginia in Andre Greene Jr. There arenā€™t any crystal ball predictions for this one either. However, Green Jr. has Penn State in his top 6, which is promising and worth keeping an eye on.Ā

Penn State has a very promising and exciting future ahead of them, but for now, itā€™s time to focus on their matchup this week in Madison, Wisconsin against the Badgers.Ā

Alabama recruiting: 2023 four-star LB Raylen Wilson trims list

Alabama makes top 12 for 2023 four-star LB Raylen Wilson.

Alabama’s 2022 class has a chance to finish as the top overall class and it looks as if it is well on the way to landing some of the top prospects from the 2023 class as well.

On Tuesday, 2023 four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson trimmed his list of schools to 12 via Hayes Fawcett of On3 Recruits.

The Tallahassee, Florida, native is a top-50 overall prospect and the third-ranked linebacker in the class.

Joining Alabama in Wilson’s top 12 are Michigan, Georgia, Penn State, Florida, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Clemson, South Carolina, Oregon and Notre Dame.
