Motorsports continued to hold its own against the sports Goliath of college basketball last weekend, with NASCAR up from the week prior and Formula 1 realizing a year-on-year gain.

NASCAR’s Cup Series round from Atlanta led the way with a 1.95 Nielsen rating and 3.422 million household viewers Sunday on FOX, per numbers from ShowBuzzDaily.com. That was down from a 2.36/4.003m last year, but a slight uptick from the previous week’s Phoenix race (1.93/3.389m).

Formula 1, meanwhile, rebounded from its slight year-on-year decline for its season opener with a gain for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on ESPN, which averaged a 0.74/1.523m. That was up 5% over the ’22 race on ESPN (1.44m) and up 17% compared to last year’s F1 season average. It was also the weekend’s most-viewed telecast across ESPN platforms, according to the network, which reports that Buffalo was the top local market for the race, averaging a 2.4 rating. Time for a Buffalo GP, maybe? Last year on this date, ESPN carried the Bahrain GP, which averaged 0.75/1.353m.

Despite its smaller overall audience, F1 bested Cup in the 18-49 age range, averaging 681,000 in that demographic to Cup’s 608K.

NASCAR’s Xfinity Series race from Atlanta averaged 0.58/1.019m on FS1 Saturday afternoon, while the Camping World Truck Series race that preceded it on FS1 averaged 0.48/807,000. Last year these races averaged 0.66/1.123m and 0.51/841K, respectively.

While Saturday’s IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Sebring was live in its entirety on the Peacock streaming service, the portion airing on the USA network averaged 100,000 viewers.

March Madness is heating up, which means a lot more competition for sports fan’s eyeballs, but motorsports held its own.

The NASCAR Cup Series round from Phoenix last Sunday afternoon averaged a 1.93 Nielsen rating and 3.389 million household viewers on FOX, per numbers from ShowBuzzDaily.com. That was down from a 2.33/3.991m for this race last year, and from a 2.22/3.991m for the previous week’s race in Las Vegas.

NHRA’s Camping World Drag Racing Series launched its season at Gainesville on FOX, and averaged a 0.58 and 945,000 viewers. Additional coverage on FS1 bumped up the total race day audience to 1.12m, the highest ever for the Gatornationals during the FOX era, according to the sanctioning body. Last year’s finals were delayed on FS1 and averaged 0.28/458,000.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Phoenix on Saturday averaged a 0.60 and 1.025m viewers on FS1, down from 0.70/1.087 last year. The ARCA Menards Series race at Phoenix on Friday night averaged 0.12/172,000 on FS2.

Updated College Football Playoff ranking projections following Week 12

After 12 weeks, who do you think will ultimately head to the CFP?

Contrary to popular belief, a great week of college football doesn’t require a huge number of upsets. That was the case in Week 12. Three of the nation’s top-four rated teams were given huge tests that all overcame (in some cases thanks to officiating).

However, No. 5 Tennessee, which seemed primed for a College Football Playoff spot, was blasted at South Carolina, 63-38. Elsewhere, No. 7 USC overcame an early deficit and held off rival No. 16 UCLA.

How will the College Football Playoff rankings look when they’re updated on Tuesday night? Here is our best guess following Week 12’s action.

Notre Dame star highest graded Power Five offensive lineman per PFF

Is he the best offensive lineman in college football?

Notre Dame has a long history of being referred to as “O-Line U”.  Names like [autotag]Quenton Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ronnie Stanley[/autotag], and [autotag]Zach Martin[/autotag] are just some of the recent stars that have gone on to successful NFL careers after dominating with the Irish.  Notre Dame offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] gets well-deserved praise for helping develop talent at a truly elite level but Notre Dame’s offensive line successes predate his arrival.

For all you youngsters out there, look up the name Joe Moore.  Just know that all those run-heavy teams that thrived under Lou Holtz were guided by offensive lines coached by Moore.  He’s also the man that the team award for the best offensive line in college football goes to annually.

Enough with the history lesson for now and back to regularly scheduled programming.

Pro Football Focus released their top-five graded Power Five offensive linemen in 2022 through Week 10’s games.  If you’ve watched Notre Dame’s offensive line in 2022 you won’t be surprised to see who checked out first overall.

Joel Klatt releases new college football rankings following crazy Saturday

How do you rank the top five or so after a downright wild college football weekend?

Week 10 of the college football season saw three teams in the top six of the College Football Playoff rankings fall while in total, nine teams in the top 25 were defeated.  What does it mean for the next batch of rankings?

Changes are certainly coming but just how extreme they end up remains to be seen.  Fox Sports lead college football analyst [autotag]Joel Klatt[/autotag] released his latest rankings on Saturday night after most of the action had concluded.  Normally Klatt puts out his top 10, but Saturday he instead gave out his top seven.

Here is how teams fell into Klatt’s latest rankings.

College football power ratings: Josh Pate’s latest top 20

Reminder: Ratings and rankings are not the same things.

If you’re a college football fan and are unfamiliar with the work of Josh Pate then do yourself an immediate favor and become familiar.  In a world of screaming, yelling, and forced debate, Pate is a breath of fresh air that can deliver a well-thought-out point without having to put on a sideshow in order to do so.

You can check out his YouTube page here as his regular podcast is the best of any national college football show/podcast I’ve heard and he just announced that he’s locked up a new deal with CBS/247Sports so that is good news for college football fans everywhere.

Pate releases his JP Poll each week which is done entirely by formula and not by the old “eye test” or anything of the sort.  That’s why sometimes teams with a few losses are ranked ahead of unbeaten squads and until these formulas can account for teams that just seemingly know how to execute late and those who don’t, I’ll have some reservations.

When looking at this look at with the question in mind “who would be favored if they met tomorrow?” they probably make a lot more sense.

With that in mind here are the top 20 in the JP Poll rankings this week.

Kirk Herbstreit releases college football top 6 team rankings following Week 4

Do you have the same top four?

Week 4 of college football has come and gone and with it goes FBS contests for the month of September.  What do we know a month into the 2022 season?  And what do we still have to find out?  It would appear plenty in both categories.

Week 4 saw No. 6 Oklahoma get knocked off at home as Adrian Martinez and Kansas State proved unstoppable for Brent Venables and company.  Elsewhere USC escaped Oregon State with a hard fought victory despite their offense having nowhere near their A-game.

AlabamaGeorgia, and Ohio State, cruised to victories while Michigan perhaps had more of a test than most would have thought against Maryland.

How did the weekend make Kirk Herbstreit feel about the College Football Playoff outlook?

Here is who Herbstreit ranked as his top-six college football teams on Sunday.

Josh Pate’s college football team ratings following week 1

Was Kirby Smart and @ugawire’s week 1 dominance over @duckswire enough to earn them the top spot?

If you’re a college football fan and are unfamiliar with the work of Josh Pate then do yourself an immediate favor and become familiar.  In a world of screaming, yelling, and forced debate, Pate is a breath of fresh air that can deliver a well thought-out point without having to put on a sideshow in order to do so.

Pate released his Week 2 JP Poll on Tuesday evening, as every FBS program has now played at least one game.  It’s important to remember this is a rating system, not a traditional ranking system.  With that in mind, here is how Pate’s top 20 looked following week 1.

Jared Goff rates near the bottom in NFL QB rankings

Lions quarterback Jared Goff rates near the bottom in NFL QB rankings from The Ringer

Lions quarterback Jared Goff has some work to do to restore his good name in 2022. After an underwhelming first season in Detroit following his unceremonious exile from the Los Angeles Rams, it’s clear the book on Goff is still not a positive one.

Look no further than the NFL quarterback rankings from The Ringer. Analyst Steven Ruiz ranked the Week 1 starting quarterbacks from 1 to 32 in advance of the start of the season.

It takes some scrolling well down the rankings before unearthing Goff. He’s No. 25 on the list, sandwiched between San Francisco’s Trey Lance and Daniel Jones of the New York Giants.

Labeled “A talented (but stationary) thrower,” Goff sits below unproven players like Lance, Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and even Seattle’s journeyman backup Geno Smith. His best attribute is listed as arm strength, while the biggest weakness cited is creativity.

No doubt the disappointing final season with the Rams and the miserable start to 2021 are difficult to ignore when evaluating Goff. But the improved finish, once Ben Johnson took over the Lions offense, as well as Goff’s two Pro Bowl nods in the last five years seems a little overlooked.
