Packers OLB Rashan Gary fined almost $11K for facemask penalty in Week 9

OLB Rashan Gary incurred the sixth fine by a Packers player during the 2023 season.

Green Bay Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary was fined $10,927 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness during Week 9 of the 2023 season.

Gary was penalized 15 yards for a facemask on Los Angeles Rams quarterback Brett Rypien at the 5:22 mark in the first quarter of the Packers’ 20-3 win. The penalty falls under the league’s “gameday accountability” umbrella and was subject to a fine.

Gary grabbed Rypien’s facemask and twisted the quarterback’s head while attempting to make a sack.

The financial loss isn’t a significant one for Gary, who signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension with the Packers in October. The deal included a $35.7 million signing bonus, so the fine money represents a tiny fraction of the bonus.

Gary is the sixth Packers player to be fined this season. Kingsley Enagbare was fined for roughing the passer in Week 8.

The league is posting all fined penalties and actions from the previous week on Saturdays this season.

From the NFL: “Players subject to accountability measures receive a letter informing them of what they did, a video of the play in question, why they are being fined and how much it will cost them. They also receive information on how to appeal the fine. If they choose not to appeal, the fine is withheld from their next game check.”

All appeals are handled appeals officers James Thrash and Derrick Brooks, two former players appointed by the NFL and NFLPA. Fines are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation.

Packers Wire will track the on-field penalties and resulting fines in recurring posts each week.

Week 1: LB De’Vondre Campbell ($10,927), CB Rasul Douglas ($13,659)
Week 3: CB Rasul Douglas ($11,473), TE Ben Sims ($4,167)
Week 8: OLB Kingsley Enagbare ($5,170)
Week 9: OLB Rashan Gary ($10,927)

Josh Allen: ‘Of course’ I keep an eye on pass rusher contracts

Josh Allen is in line for a huge pay day soon, one way or another.

Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker Josh Allen is on a one-way track to a massive payday, one way or another.

After racking up nine sacks in the first eight games of the season, the 25-year-old pass rusher is set to become a free agent in 2024. There’s only three ways things can get resolved in the next four months:

  1. Allen signs a massive extension with the Jaguars.
  2. The Jaguars allow Allen to reach free agency where he’d potentially be the biggest prize on the market.
  3. Allen receives the always pricy franchise tag.

Regardless of how the situation plays out, Allen is in line to follow in the footsteps of the Chicago Bears’ Montez Sweat and Green Bay Packers’ Rashan Gary, who both signed contracts last week that average more than $24 million per season.

“Of course,” Allen said Wednesday when asked if he keeps an eye on the deals other pass rushers have recently received. “You always want to see where the market is at, especially at my position. Obviously, I see where those guys get paid and say ‘OK, that’s nice.'”

But Allen also made it clear that his focus is on his play and a season that could be special for both him and the Jaguars.

“For what I want to do this year, for what I want to achieve … don’t settle,” Allen said. “If I continue to find ways to be successful, then things might come. But obviously I’ve got goals and aspirations that I want to achieve this year — hell, I want to win a Super Bowl.

“If I can continue to play at a high level — motivate, elevate everybody else around us to get to that point, let’s do it.”

Allen compares favorably to Sweat and Gary, who both trail him in sacks and pressures this year.

Through four and a half seasons, Allen has 36.5 sacks, third most in franchise history and only one behind Yannick Ngakoue for second.

How Montez Sweat’s new 4-year, $98M deal with Bears will impact Haason Reddick

We’re looking at how Montez Sweat’s 4-year, $105M deal with the Chicago Bears impacts Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick

The Eagles retooled this offseason, signing All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts to a massive contract extension and adjusting after losing some big-name defenders in free agency.

If Philadelphia thought they had a problem after Rashan Gary agreed to a five-year, $107 million extension with Green Bay, wait until Howie Roseman sees Montez Sweat’s new deal.

According to Ian Rapoport, The Bears and new star pass-rusher Montez Sweat have agreed to terms on a 4-year that’s worth $72 million guaranteed.

The deal comes almost three months after Haason Reddick was asked about his salary and where it ranks among the NFL’s top pass rushers.

The $24.5 million per season puts Sweat ahead of Gary and on par with Myles Garrett, making him the 5th highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

GM Howie Roseman focused on adding younger talent in free agency this offseason, with the potential for impactful production on a cheap deal.

With Sweat’s new deal in place, here’s how it impacts the Eagles and Haason Reddick.

Rashan Gary signs enormous contract extension with Packers

He’s just so, so good! #GoBlue

Rashan Gary, the former top recruit nationally in the 2016 class, has made good on his first-round prowess. The Packers signed the star defender to a four-year extension on Monday morning. Gary is guaranteed $96 million, and can make up to $107 million if he hits all his incentive bonuses.

The Packers selected Gary with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, and he has more than lived up to the billing. Gary has 27 sacks thus far in his career with an additional 28 TFLs and 62 QB hits. Gary caught fire last season before a torn ligament ended his campaign early, but the pass rusher looks to have rebounded well this season. Gary has 4.5 sacks this season but was playing on a snap count early in the year and faces consistent double teams.

As his pay suggests, Gary has emerged as one of the league’s premier pass rushers. His freakish athleticism has been well-documented going back to high school, but Gary has always been a passionate player. His energy and charisma have been documented early in the season when Gary was mic’d up for a dominant performance in week three. Gary was moved to tears after a strong win in which he was awarded a game ball, showing exactly how much he cares about winning and his teammates.

Though this is great news for local Wolverine fans, this means that the Lions will continue to face Gary twice a year for the next four seasons. Darn.

How Rashan Gary’s new 4-year, $107M deal with Packers impacts Haason Reddick

We’re looking at hoow Rashan Gary’s new 4-year, $107M deal with the Green Bay Packers impacts Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick

The Eagles retooled this offseason, signing All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts to a massive contract extension and adjusting after losing some big-name defenders in free agency.

If Philadelphia thought they had a problem after Nick Bosa agreed to a five-year, $170 million extension with San Francisco, wait until Howie Roseman sees Rashan Gary’s new deal.

According to Ian Rapoport, The Packers and star pass-rusher Rashan Gary have agreed to terms on a 4-year, $96M extension in new money — $107,532,706 overall — with a signing bonus of $34,636,928.

The deal comes almost three months after Haason Reddick was asked about his salary and where it ranks among the NFL’s top pass rushers.

The $24 million per season puts Gary on par with Maxx Crosby as the sixth highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

GM Howie Roseman focused on adding younger talent in free agency this offseason, with the potential for impactful production on a cheap deal.

With Gary’s new deal in place, here’s how it impacts the Eagles and Haason Reddick.

Rashan Gary’s extension with Packers includes $35M signing bonus

The Packers gave OLB Rashan Gary a signing bonus of nearly $35 million in his new contract extension.

Green Bay Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary joined Nick Bosa, T.J. Watt, Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack as the fifth edge rusher in football to sign a contract featuring a signing bonus of at least $30 million.

Gary’s signing bonus in his new, four-year extension is $34,636,928. The bonus amount will be spread out on the salary cap in increments of around $7 million over the five total years of the contract, including 2023.

The signing bonus is the fourth highest among edge rushers. As the Packers often do with veteran contracts, a big signing bonus up front provides the player with immediate and guaranteed money while allowing the team to better spread out the yearly cap hits.

The extension will pay Gary a little over $96 million in new money. Adding in the $11 million from this year means Gary’s deal is worth around $107 million in total. In terms of new money, Gary’s extension ranks fifth among edge rushers per year.

Because Gary has already been paid over $4 million in base salary this season, the extension will actually reduce the Packers’ available cap space by a little under $1 million in 2023.

Roster bonuses due to be paid out in 2024 and 2025 account for $14.9 million of the contract. Base salaries of $18 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027, or the final two years of the deal, account for another $39 million total. The Packers also put in a $700,000 workout bonus per year from 2024-27 and $800,000 roster bonus ($800,000 total, paid out per game) every year from 2024-27.

Including the signing bonus, Gary will earn almost $40 million in 2023.

Here’s the contract structuring, via Ken Ingalls:

OLB Rashan Gary signs 4-year, $107 million contract extension with Packers

Packers OLB Rashan Gary announced the signing of a four-year, $107 million contract extension with Packers.

Edge rusher Rashan Gary announced the signing of a four-year, $107 million extension with the Green Bay Packers on Monday morning. Gary’s social media post showed a picture of him signing the new deal.

Gary, the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, was playing the 2023 season on the final year of his rookie deal. A four-year extension will keep Gary under contract in Green Bay through the 2027 season.

After tearing his ACL and missing the final eight games of last season, Gary returned to start the 2023 season and reasserted himself as a dominant player, even in a reduced role. He has 4.5 sacks, five tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits while playing just 40 percent of the defense’s overall snaps through seven games this season.

Entering Week 8, Gary had 26 total pressures and an NFL-best pass-rush win rate of 29.6 percent, per PFF.

The $96 million in new money equates to $24 million per year. The deal will place Gary slightly below Nick Bosa ($34 million per year), T.J. Watt ($28 million) and Joey Bosa ($27 million) as the highest-paid edge rushers per year.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Gary’s new deal includes a signing bonus of almost $35 million.

Packers Wire will have more on Gary’s new deal as details emerge on Monday.

ProBlue: Who showed out for Michigan on the big stage

Some really great showings from former #Michigan players this week! #GoBlue

NFL Week 5 has officially wrapped up, and it was chock-full of big performances from former Wolverines.

Sadly Nico Collins had a relatively quiet week and dropped out of the top five receiving yards total, but the defensive alum picked up the slack. Aidan Hutchinson was all over social media with his one-handed snag, Mike Danna iced the Chiefs victory with a sack — and plenty more!

Sack leaderboards:

T1: Aidan Hutchinson (4.5)

T1: Rashan Gary (4.5)

3: Mike Danna (3.5)

4: Kwity Paye (3)

5: Josh Uche (2)

Here are the top performances from former Michigan football players in Week 5:

Rashan Gary featured in NFL’s mic’d up video

Really cool stuff here! #GoBlue

This week’s NFL Mic’d Up video had familiar face, and voice, for Wolverine fans. Former Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary wore the wire in his first full game back from an ACL tear that sidelined him for the second half of last season.

Gary put up six sacks through 8.5 games in 2022, and was limited for the first two contests of 2023. Sunday’s full return was legendary, however.

Gary put up three sacks in a dominant performance that was recognized with a game ball in the locker room. Gary was understandably emotional after the win.

“All I’m saying — it’s an honor and privilege every Sunday to go to war with y’all,” Gary exclaimed through tears.

Gary’s portion of the video begins at 14:01.

Detroit Lions biggest key matchup vs. Green Bay Packers

Breaking down the Detroit Lions biggest key match-up vs. Green Bay Packers in Week 4

Coming off a big win against the Atlanta Falcons, the Detroit Lions travel to Lambeau Field to battle the Green Bay Packers on a short week. They’ve got a three-day turnaround to get right and be ready for Jordan Love and the Packers.

Fortunately, the Packers also have a short week and will have to be just as prepared as they’ve been all season. No doubt this is a pivotal match-up for both teams.

As the Lions prepare, they’ve got quite a few different players to focus on. For starters, rookie tight end Luke Musgrave has been a solid addition to the Packers passing attack. In Week 3, he had eight targets, and it turned into six receptions for 49 yards. So far this season, he has earned a 75-plus percent snap share each week, and he even had 29 snaps aligned in the slot last week.

Much of the production for Musgrave could be due to the fact that wide receiver Christian Watson has been out every game so far this season due to a hamstring injury. There’s speculation that Watson returns Thursday night against the Lions but that remains to be seen.

In addition to Musgrave, the Packers have started to see some efficient production from wide receiver Romeo Doubs. He’s the Packers highest rated wide receiver on PFF with a 74.7 receiving grade. So far this year, Doubs has 19 targets for 11 receptions and 129 yards. He’s also tallied three touchdowns and 9 first down receptions.

While it’s important to focus on the Packers offense, it’s important to note that it looks tough for them to get going if Jordan Love is off-the-mark on any drive. Meanwhile, this offense looks like it desperately needs running back Aaron Jones back into the starting lineup. Much like Watson, he’s also dealing with a hamstring injury.

As we wait for more updates on the health of the Packers offense, let’s focus on a player that is healthy for Green Bay. That’s edge rusher Rashan Gary. Through 3 games this season, Gary has 44 pas rushing snaps (per PFF) and it’s generated in one hit, 8 hurries and four sacks. According to their pass-rushing production metric, he’s the number one player right now.

If the Lions get left tackle Taylor Decker, that would be a huge plus as it looks like Gary is becoming the premier edge rusher he was expected to be coming out of Michigan.

Now, if Decker is out for Thursday night due to his ankle injury, I’d get ready to see Penei Sewell to stay busy with Gary for much of the night. Then again, the Packers could deploy Gary opposite of Sewell and have him match-up against fifth-round rookie Colby Sorsdal.

The simple move is for Decker to return and move back to left tackle so Sewell can play right tackle. If that doesn’t happen, it could be a long night for the rookie tackle out of William & Mary, who the Lions had been preparing to play guard. The Lions will need Sorsdal to step up and in at right tackle since Matt Nelson injured his ankle and it required surgery.

Whatever happens, will happen but look for Jared Goff to get rid of the ball quickly and for the rushing attack to run away from number 52 of the Packers defense on Thursday night.
