Former Tennessee quarterback and assistant coach Randy Sanders will be inducted into the Greater Knoxville Area Sports Hall of Fame Thursday.

Sanders retired as East Tennessee State’s head coach following the 2021 season. He led the Buccaneers to an NCAA Division I FCS playoff appearance.

Sanders played for the Vols from 1984-88 under head coach Johnny Majors.

He later served as Majors’ quarterbacks coach and remained on the Vols’ coaching staff in various roles, including offensive coordinator, under head coach Phillip Fulmer.

In nearly two decades as a Tennessee coach, Sanders was part of the Vols’ 1998 national championship team.

During his tenure at Tennessee, the Vols won four SEC championships and four SEC East titles.

Sanders served as an assistant coach at Kentucky and Florida State.

He retired from East Tennessee State with a 26-16 record.

George Quarles hired as East Tennessee State’s head coach.

George Quarles is returning to Tennessee.

Quarles served as head coach at Maryville High School in Maryville, Tennessee from 1999-2016. He was named head coach at East Tennessee State Thursday.

Quarles replaces former Vol quarterback and assistant Randy Sanders. Sanders retired after guiding the Buccaneers to an 11-2 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs during the 2021 season.

Quarles comes to East Tennessee State after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Furman. He played at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, Tennessee.

Quarles guided Maryville to 11 state championships, compiling a 250-16 record and won 74 consecutive games during one stretch.

East Tennessee State head coach Randy Sanders announced his retirement from football on Monday.

Sanders served as East Tennessee State’s head coach from 2018-21, compiling a 26–16 record. He played quarterback at Tennessee and served as an assistant coach for the Vols from 1989-2005.

“I want to thank Dr. Brian Noland and Scott Carter for giving me the opportunity to lead the ETSU football program,” Sanders said. “This wasn’t an easy decision. I have been fortunate to coach football for over 30 years, and I’ve really enjoyed my time at ETSU, but I am ready for the next chapter.

“I am looking forward to spending time with my family and being around my grandchildren. I will forever be a Buccaneer and I am grateful for all the friendships I have made during my time at ETSU.”

A former Tennessee football assistant guided his team to an FCS playoff victory.

Randy Sanders, a former quarterback and assistant for the Volunteers, is in his fourth season as East Tennessee State’s head coach.

During the first round, East Tennessee State defeated Kennesaw State, 32-31, at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The Buccaneers (11-1) were the 2021 Southern Conference champions and Sanders was the Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

Tight end Nate Adkins recorded seven receptions for 94 yards in the game for East Tennessee State.

Sanders, a graduate of Morristown East High School, played for the Vols between 1984-88 under head coach Johnny Majors.

Sanders launched his coaching career in 1989 as the Vols’ quarterbacks coach.

He was a coach at Tennessee under Majors and Phillip Fulmer. Sanders held coaching positions overseeing quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers before becoming offensive coordinator for the Vols between 1998-2005.

Sanders is a two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year, winning the award during his first season, guiding the Buccaneers to a share of the league championship.

East Tennessee State will travel to play North Dakota State Saturday at noon EST in the second round. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Tennessee and Kentucky have one of the longest running rivalries in the Southeastern Conference and college football.

The Volunteers and Wildcats will renew acquaintances on the gridiron in Lexington on Saturday.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT at Kroger Field and the game will be televised by ESPN2.

The Tennessee-Kentucky series dates back to 1893 and Saturday’s meeting will mark the 117th time the two rivals have played. The Vols hold an 81-26-9 advantage in the series.

One current head coach, Randy Sanders, has deep ties to both schools.

A native of Morristown, Tennessee, Sanders was a quarterback for the Vols between 1984-88. He graduated from Morristown East High School and is now the head coach at East Tennessee State.

Under his guidance in 2021, the Buccaneers have a 7-1 record, including a 23-3 victory at Vanderbilt.

A backup at Tennessee, Sanders began his coaching career with the Vols in 1989 under head coach Johnny Majors.

Sanders, who has been ETSU’s head coach since 2018, coached at Tennessee between 1989-2005, serving as quarterbacks coach, wide receivers coach, running backs coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator.

He and Tennessee parted ways in 2005.

After his time at Tennessee, Sanders went to Kentucky, serving as quarterbacks coach between 2006-12. He was the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator between 2009-12.

Sanders coached at Florida State in 2013, serving as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator until 2017.

During his first year at ETSU, he guided the Buccaneers to an 8-4 record and a share of the Southern Conference championship. He has a 22-16 record as ETSU’s head coach.

East Tennessee State kicked off its spring season Saturday with a 24-17 victory over Samford.

After falling behind 14-0 entering the second quarter, ETSU outscored Samford 24-3 for the remainder of the contest.

Randy Sanders is in his third season as head coach for ETSU. He won the Southern Conference championship in his first season as the Buccaneers’ head coach during the 2018 campaign.

Sanders played quarterback at Tennessee (1984-88) and was a longtime assistant coach for the Vols (1989-2005).

Randy Sanders reflects on Johnny Majors, Miracle at South Bend.

No. 13 Tennessee defeated No. 5 Notre Dame, 35-34, on Nov. 9, 1991 at Notre Dame Stadium.

The Vols rallied to victory after trailing Notre Dame by 24 points. The comeback is known as the “Miracle at South Bend.”

Notre Dame led Tennessee, 21-0, after the first quarter, and 31-7 with less than a minute to play in the first half.

Current East Tennessee State head coach Randy Sanders served as Tennessee’s wide receivers coach in 1991.

Sanders joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” and discussed the Vols’ comeback win at Notre Dame. He also reflected on his time coaching and playing for former UT head coach Johnny Majors.
