No. 11 Tennessee kept its perfect record intact with a 4-1 victory over East Tennessee State Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Volunteers (7-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Trey Lipscomb hit a two-run home run against the Buccaneers (5-2).

East Tennessee State starting pitcher Landon Smiddy (0-2) surrendered the game’s first two runs.

The Buccaneers pulled to within 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Garett Wallace’s RBI double plated David Beam.

Tennessee extended its advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jared Dickey drew a bases loaded walk.

The Vols closed its scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Drew Gilbert.

Tennessee’s Camden Sewell pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, his second of the season. He surrendered three hits and struck out seven batters.

Redmond Walsh pitched one inning and had one strikeout en route to recording his first save during the season.

Zander Sechrist started for the Vols and recorded six strikeouts. He pitched 4.2 innings and surrendered  one earned run, two hits and one walk.

George Quarles hired as East Tennessee State’s head coach

George Quarles hired as East Tennessee State’s head coach.

George Quarles is returning to Tennessee.

Quarles served as head coach at Maryville High School in Maryville, Tennessee from 1999-2016. He was named head coach at East Tennessee State Thursday.

Quarles replaces former Vol quarterback and assistant Randy Sanders. Sanders retired after guiding the Buccaneers to an 11-2 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs during the 2021 season.

Quarles comes to East Tennessee State after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Furman. He played at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, Tennessee.

Quarles guided Maryville to 11 state championships, compiling a 250-16 record and won 74 consecutive games during one stretch.

Randy Sanders announces his retirement from football.

East Tennessee State head coach Randy Sanders announced his retirement from football on Monday.

Sanders served as East Tennessee State’s head coach from 2018-21, compiling a 26–16 record. He played quarterback at Tennessee and served as an assistant coach for the Vols from 1989-2005.

“I want to thank Dr. Brian Noland and Scott Carter for giving me the opportunity to lead the ETSU football program,” Sanders said. “This wasn’t an easy decision. I have been fortunate to coach football for over 30 years, and I’ve really enjoyed my time at ETSU, but I am ready for the next chapter.

“I am looking forward to spending time with my family and being around my grandchildren. I will forever be a Buccaneer and I am grateful for all the friendships I have made during my time at ETSU.”

Vols defeat East Tennessee State

The Vols defeat East Tennessee State.

The Vols (2-0) defeated East Tennessee State, 94-62, Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

No. 18 Tennessee had three players post double figures in the scoring column against the Buccaneers (0-2), who are coached by former UT assistant Desmond Oliver.

Olivier Nkamhoa scored a career-high 23 points and recorded eight rebounds for the Vols.

Freshman point guard Kennedy Chandler added 16 points, all in the first half. He also had six assists and five rebounds for Tennessee, which led 46-23 at halftime.

Justin Powell scored 11 points off the bench for the Vols. Josiah-Jordan James and Victor Bailey Jr. scored nine points, while Santiago Vescovi totaled seven.

Sixth-year senior forward John Fulkerson scored six points and recorded 10 rebounds in his season debut. He missed the Vols’ season-opening victory against UT Martin on Tuesday with a thumb injury.

Jordan King scored 22 points to lead the Buccaneers.

ETSU trio set for Knoxville homecoming

ETSU trio set for Knoxville homecoming.

East Tennessee State is slated to play the Lady Vols Saturday in the Tennessee Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The volleyball match (12:30 p.m. EDT) will mark a homecoming for three former Knoxville area high school players.

Sydney Cherney, Jenna Forster and Olivia Cunningham will return home for the Buccaneers.

Cherney, a junior libero, played for Farragut High School under head coach Susan Davidson.

As a sophomore for ETSU last spring, Cherney appeared in all 16 of her team’s matches and made 15 starts. She was a four-time All-Knoxville Interscholastic League standout and a three-time all-district player for the Lady Admirals.

Forster, a sophomore right side player, played her high school volleyball at William Blount. She totaled a record 1,000 career kills for the Lady Governors.

She started all 16 of ETSU’s matches as a freshman last spring.

Cunningham, a junior outside hitter for the Buccaneers, played at Knoxville Catholic High School.

With the Lady Irish, Cunningham played for head coach Brent Carter and appeared in the state tournament four times.

Cunningham started the first five matches for ETSU last season before suffering a season-ending injury.

Jordan Beck hits walk-off three-run homer against ETSU

Recapping UT’s victory over East Tennessee State Tuesday.

Jordan Beck’s big day at the plate helped Tennessee nab a walk-off extra-inning victory Tuesday night.

Beck, the Volunteers’ sophomore right fielder, clubbed two home runs, including a three-run shot in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift No. 10 UT to a 9-6 victory over East Tennessee State at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Beck went 3-for-6 with two homers, an RBI double and two runs. He drove in five runs for the Vols (15-3).

Beck started the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning.

Tennessee took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Drew Gilbert in the third.

After the Buccaneers (10-6) scored three runs in the fourth and tallied once in the fifth, the Vols answered with two runs in the sixth as Max Ferguson had an RBI triple and Liam Spence drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Beck’s RBI double plated Jake Rucker to give Tennessee a 5-4 lead in the seventh.

Sevier County graduate Noah Webb made it 5-5 when he drove in a run for the Buccaneers with a sacrifice fly before Halls High product Bryce Hodge gave ETSU a 6-5 lead with an RBI groundout.

Gilbert tied things with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth before Beck sealed the victory in the bottom of the extra frame.

ETSU brings 11 players with local baseball ties to Lindsey Nelson Stadium

Buccaneers have 11 players with Knoxville ties.

When East Tennessee State University makes a trip to Lindsey Nelson Stadium Tuesday night to take on No. 10 Tennessee, several Buccaneers will have a homecoming as they played their high school baseball in the Knoxville area.

ETSU (10-5) has 11 players with Knoxville ties on its 2021 roster.

They include: Hunter Loyd (a junior pitcher who played at Christian Academy of Knoxville under legendary coach Tommy Pharr); Austin King (a sophomore infielder from Farragut, where he played for the Admirals, who are always in contention for a Class AAA State Championship); David Beam (a senior outfielder and star at Bearden High School); Noah Webb (a sophomore catcher who played for Sevier County); Sean Kearney (a senior infielder who prepped at Knoxville Catholic); Landon Smiddy (a pitcher from Farragut); Bryce Hodge (who played at Halls High before beginning his collegiate career at Walters State Community College) and Walker Trusley (a pitcher who starred in both baseball and football at Powell High School).

Other players with ties to the area include Owen Kovacs and Adam Birkholz, who both pitched at Farragut, and Bubba Hubbard who played at Walters State.

First pitch for the game between Tennessee (17-3) and the Bucs is slated for 6:30 p.m. EDT.
