Report: Saints ‘monitoring’ Davante Adams trade situation

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the New Orleans Saints are ‘monitoring’ the trade buzz surrounding Davante Adams:

Here’s the latest scoop on the Davante Adams front, courtesy of ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Trade rumors still surround the Las Vegas Raiders as they consider their options with the star wide receiver, who is currently dealing with a minor (and convenient) hamstring injury. And the New Orleans Saints have been linked to him.

While the widespread expectation is for Aaron Rodgers to push the New York Jets into pursuing Adams, Fowler reports that it’s no sure thing he’ll end up joining them. Other teams are in the mix, and, “I’m told the Saints are monitoring. You have the Derek Carr connection there.”

Fowler adds that the key issue will be Adams’ salary, and how much of it the Raiders are willing to pay to facilitate a trade. Teams running tight against the salary cap like the Saints are going to need that help, and it could spur  them into offering a sweeter deal than the Jets.

Let’s say the Jets offer a third-round pick while asking the Raiders to pay $5 million of Adams’ remaining salary. What if the Saints pony up a second rounder in exchange for Las Vegas covering $8 million? That’s what this could come down to, and it all hinges on how much urgency the Raiders feel to get Adams out of the building. But this is just speculation. The trade deadline is a month away on Nov. 5 and there’s plenty of time for this situation to develop further.

Saints’ surprise roster cut could may suggest a big pickup is on the way

The Saints just opened a spot in the receiving corps and made the No. 17 jersey available. Could it pave the way to a Davante Adams trade?

The New Orleans Saints stunned their fanbase by making the decision to  waive wide receiver A.T. Perry on Friday, but many fans’ firs thoughts turned to another wideout after the shock wore off: Davante Adams. The six-time Pro Bowler has requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, who this week began exploring their options.

Reports have had  the Saints near the top of Adams’ wishlist of destinations, and they could use more help at the position given their reliance on  youngsters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. There really isn’t a veteran presence at wide receiver in New Orleans, and Adams could add a lot to the offense given his strong resume and past experience with Derek Carr.

But while it’s fun to speculate about Perry’s departure paving the way to an Adams trade, that feels more like wishful thinking than real dot-connecting. It’s not like Perry was taking up a ton of salary cap space, and if anything the Raiders may have liked to have him thrown in to the package of assets they would be getting back for Adams.

So maybe don’t rush to any conclusions based off this roster move. Perry could sign with the practiice squad after clearing waivers and the Saints needed to open a roster spot for running back Kendre Miller if he’s coming off injured reserve this week.

Still, it’s a curiously-timed roster move. And Adams would be able to pick up his favored No. 17 jersey if he does move to New Orleans. Stay tuned.

Derek Carr has only beaten Patrick Mahomes once since the Chiefs drafted him

Former Raiders QB Derek Carr has only beaten Patrick Mahomes once since the Chiefs drafted him. The Saints can help rewrite that narrative:

The New Orleans Saints haven’t played the Kansas City Chiefs much in their history. The two teams have faced off only 12 times over the last 52 years. Saints’ quarterback Derek Carr on the other hand is extremely familiar with the Chiefs.

Familiarity isn’t always a good thing though. Carr began his career with the Las Vegas Raiders, so he shared a division with Kansas City and played them twice a year.  In that time frame, he has played the Chiefs more than the Saints have in their history.

The thing is, Carr has had minimal success. His record is 3-14, and the victories have obviously been sporadic. His last victory came in 2020, and it’s the only time Carr has defeated Patrick Mahomes.

Beyond wins and losses, Carr also averages an interception per contest and has thrown at least one in 7 of the last 8 games. Carr has thrown an interception in each of the Saints’ last 3 games as well.

History and trends do not appear to be on New Orleans’ side. The Saints, as an organization, have a losing record against the Chiefs as well. The record is much closer at 7-5, but it features three straight Chiefs victories.

Report: Davante Adams’ top trade target has emerged

The New Orleans Saints remain in the mix for Davante Adams, but the New York Jets have emerged as his top trade target:

When it was originally reported Davante Adams requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, it was said  he had two preferred destination — the New Orleans Saints or New York Jets. He would accept a trade to other destinations, but he would land on one of those two teams if he was given his pick.

The appeal for both destinations are similar, but per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets are at the top of Adams’ wish list. This doesn’t remove the Saints from the mix, but it does drop them down a level in the pecking order.

The Jets have Aaron Rodgers, his quarterback with the Green Bay Packers. The Saints have Derek Carr, Adams’ collegiate quarterback and the reason he went to Vegas. Both teams have young Ohio State wide receivers in Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, as well, who Adams could mentor.

While the Saints may still be high on Adams’ list, there appears to be a separation from the Jets at the top and the rest of the pack. Originally, it seemed the Saints and Jets were evenly matched, and then this separation emerged.

On the bright side, teams tend to trade talented players like Adams out of the conference. And ultimately Adams won’t choose where he goes since he doesn’t have a no-trade clause or other leverage. The Raiders will take the best offer. That could give New Orleans an edge if they have to spend more to get some help maneuvering around the salary cap.

Saints starter reacts to Davante Adams trade rumors

Tyrann Mathieu reacted to the latest Davante Adams trade rumors during a live interview: ‘Nobody’s going to turn that down’

Could the New Orleans Saints trade for Davante Adams? The Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver has made it known he wants to reunite with one of his old quarterbacks — either Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets, or Derek Carr with the Saints. And that’s very intriguing. Tyrann Mathieu discussed the latest Adams trade rumors during a recent appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

While it’s not a topic Mathieu has discussed with Carr, it is something he’s seen going around on social media. He understands why Adams would want to catch passes from Carr again.

“And Davante’s a hell of a player, man,” Mathieu said. “Don’t get me wrong, I like the guys that we have, but like I said, Davante’s one of those guys. Nobody’s going to turn that down.”

Adams has a long-running relationship with Carr, and he made his sixth Pro Bowl the year the Raiders traded for him to get the pair back together. He’d bring a physicality and veteran presence the Saints haven’t really had at wide receiver since injuries piled up for Michael Thomas a couple of years ago.

Mathieu continued: “He’s a special player. Like the last ten years he’s been a top three, four receiver year in and year out. He’s highly competitive. I’ve had the chance to  really play against him a couple of times. He’s one of the best guys doing it, from just route running, and just his headiness. We talk about (Travis) Kelce being savvy, Davante has a lot of that in his game, too. And wherever he ends up he’s going to make that team better, too.”

Will the Saints be able to cut a deal? It won’t be easy, and ultimately it isn’t up to Adams. The Raiders will be able to take the best offer. Maybe it comes from New York. Maybe it comes from New Orleans. If Adams does end up with the Saints, it sure sounds like Mathieu would be one of the first in line to greet him.

Don’t expect 49ers to trade for Raiders superstar WR

A Davante Adams trade to the 49ers? Don’t count on it.

There was some speculation the San Francisco 49ers may want to get involved in the trade market for Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams when reports surfaced that Adams wanted out of Sin City.

Don’t expect such a blockbuster deal to happen.

While adding another offensive weapon is always enticing for teams looking to get over the hump and win a championship, it doesn’t appear Adams would be interested even if the 49ers wanted to make a deal.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported teams around the NFL believe Adams is determined to orchestrate a trade to the New York Jets to reunite with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets make a ton of sense as a trade destination for Adams. They need wide receiver help, and Rodgers needs a receiver he knows he can rely on. New York is 2-2, 21st in the NFL in scoring, and 18th in passing.

For the 49ers it’s not the end of the world that they’re not likely to acquire Adams. Offensive firepower isn’t their issue, particularly if/when All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey returns.

Some speculated the 49ers could deal the struggling Brandon Aiyuk to Vegas, but that would have come with a massive dead cap hit that might have derailed any financial plans the team laid out during a busy offseason that saw McCaffrey, Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams all get new, expensive contracts.

Aiyuk isn’t liable to go anywhere anytime soon, especially with one of the only players available who would be able to match his production now ostensibly off the table.

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers trade Russell Wilson for Davante Adams?

With the Pittsburgh Steelers apparent interest in trading for superstar wide receiver Davante Adams, could the trade package to do so involve Russell Wilson?

The trade market has never been hotter for the 2024 NFL season. Davante Adams has been the marquee name in recent days, with teams seeking to acquire the current Raider for a compensation package that meets the Las Vegas team’s demands.

It was reported that the Las Vegas Raiders would seek a second-round pick, as well as ‘additional compensation.’ Could the Steelers be one of the few teams capable of meeting these requirements, and does this involve sending Russell Wilson to Vegas?

Justin Fields should secure the starting quarterback position moving forward. Although the Steelers would appreciate the depth Wilson offers, he holds more value as trade compensation than sitting behind Fields for the rest of the season.

Wilson, along with a conditional third-round pick, should be more than enough to acquire the 31-year-old Adams.  The Raiders also have quarterback issues of their own, which Wilson could alleviate.

Pittsburgh has been down this road before with the Brandon Aiyuk drama earlier this season. If the Steelers went all in on Aiyuk, why not send your backup quarterback in a move for possibly the best wide receiver of the past decade, Davante Adams?

ESPN: Saints are high on Davante Adams’ wishlist of trade destinations

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Saints are high on Davante Adams’ wishlist of trade destinations. He wants to catch passes from Derek Carr once again:

Davante Adams caught passes from Derek Carr on the Las Vegas Raiders and in college at Fresno State, and he wants to do it with the New Orleans Saints, too. That’s what ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday morning. Adams has requested a trade from the Raiders and Schefter says the Saints and New York Jets are on top of Adams’ wishlist.

It’s easy to see why. His old Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is with the Jets these days. And Carr is one of his closest friends going back to their college days (where, incidentally, Adams was recruited to Fresno State and coached by Keith Williams, the Saints’ new wide receivers coach). Adams wasn’t happy to see the Raiders bench and cut Carr after trading for him.

“I came here to play with Derek. I can’t say I would be here if he wasn’t here,” Adams told Rich Eisen last year, after Carr joined the Saints, “It definitely hurt not having him around, but after so long in the league you get used to it.”

So Adams is interested in the Saints for the same reason he was interested in the Raiders: Carr is their quarterback. But will that interest be reciprocated? It’s possible, seeing as Dennis Allen has been looking for more firepower outside guys like Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, Rashid Shaheed and Taysom Hill. Adams would certainly bring that. When he and Carr were together for 15 games in 2022 Adams totaled 88 receptions, 1,290 yards, and 12 touchdowns.

The Raiders have set their price for a potential Davante Adams trade

ESPN reports the Raiders have set their price for a potential Davante Adams trade. But should the Saints be willing to pay it? Can they even afford him?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Las Vegas Raiders have set their price for a potential Davante Adams trade. But should the New Orleans Saints be willing to pay it? Just what would it cost them, anyway?

Schefter says the Raiders have told other teams that serious offers would include a second-round draft pick plus “additional compensation,” which can mean different things for different suitors. Maybe a player already under contract gets the deal done. Or maybe the Raiders would settle for a late-round pick in 2025 or 2026.

Those are the details that must be hammered out in conversations between general managers. And it’s worth noting the Saints have three former GM’s advising Mickey Loomis these days. One of them, Dave Ziegler, was the last GM to trade for Adams when he sent a package of first- and second-round picks to the Green Bay Packers a few years ago. Another one, Randy Mueller, said earlier this year he wouldn’t trade a first rounder straight-up for Adams at his current age, but he’d support dealing a conditional second-round pick that could upgrade to a first if the receiver hits various incentives.

One complicating factor? The Saints’ stressful salary cap situation. They’re under the 2024 cap by about $2.7 million right now and would need $13.5 million to fit Adams on their books. They could convince the Raiders to pay part of that salary by trading a better pick than other teams, but that’s a risky strategy. And Loomis is known for taking more risks than his peers given his ironclad job security.

Either way this situation seems to be developing rapidly. Check back for more updates as more information becomes available.

Former Packers WR Davante Adams asks for trade from Raiders

Two years after being traded from the Green Bay Packers to Las Vegas Raiders, All-Pro receiver Davante Adams is once again hoping to be moved via trade

Two years after being traded from the Green Bay Packers to Las Vegas Raiders, All-Pro receiver Davante Adams is once again hoping to be moved via trade. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Adams informed the Raiders he would prefer to be traded.

Per reporting from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Raiders are willing to entertain offers for Adams that include a second-round pick and additional compensation.

Adams, who turns 32 in December, is under contract through the 2026 season, but the Raiders could (and likely would, barring a trade) get out of the deal as early as this upcoming offseason, making a trade increasingly possible.

The Packers rebuilt the receiver position via the draft and aren’t going to be trading for an aging wide receiver. So, where could Adams be traded? A reunion with Aaron Rodgers in New York is possible. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen could use receiver help. A potential nightmare landing spot for the Packers is in Detroit, where Adams would team with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and give the Lions a terrific trio of receivers.

Adams, a second-round pick of the Packers in the 2014 draft, caught 18 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown over the Raiders’ first three games of 2024. He missed Week 4 with a hamstring injury.

Adams has caught over 100 passes and gone over 1,000 receiving yards in four straight seasons and five of the last six. He led the NFL in touchdown catches with 14 during his first season with the Raiders in 2022.

The Packers traded Adams to the Raiders in March of 2022. Over eight seasons with the Packers, Adams caught 669 passes for 8,121 yards and 73 touchdowns. The Packers received a first- and second-round pick in return for Adams.

Adams is a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. He led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2020 and was an All-Pro in both 2020 and 2021 while with the Packers.
