10 historic heated Raiders rivalry matchups in 2023

10 teams Raiders face this season with whom they have serious historic beef

The NFL loves its history. The Raiders are a big part of that history, going back to the 60s and were mainstays in the playoffs for every decade from the 60s to the early 2000s. Making for a lot of matchups that have you looking back to when the two teams had a heated battle in the fight to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Naturally, the division games would all fall in there somewhere as at some point or another each has played a considerable factor in the Raiders’ standing. But there are a lot more teams who have had run-ins with the Raiders over their long history in the league.

There are a great many match-ups the Raiders have this season that carry historical significance. At least ten, in fact. Here they are.

5 observations about Raiders 2022 schedule

5 key observations about how the Raiders schedule plays out this season.

Even though we’ve known for months now who and where the Raiders would be playing this season, there are still some things that matter when the actual order of those games is revealed.

You can see the full schedule right here.

Here are five things of note.

1. Three early starts

Three games for the Raiders have a 10am Pacific time start — Week three at Tennessee, Week eight at New Orleans, and Week nine at Jacksonville. Yes, that means they will have two straight trips to the Eastern time zone.

2. One cold weather game

The Raiders get off easy here, with just one December game in a cold weather city. They head to Pittsburgh in week 16. Though you may be able to count their game in Denver on November 20th as a cold weather game as well.

3. One short week

Just one true short week on the season. It’s when they play on Thursday Night Football against the Rams in Week 14. And at least they won’t have to go far for the game.

4. Week six bye

Most teams would prefer a bye week later in the season. The Raiders bye week happens in week six. They will face the Texans in week seven coming out of the bye.

5. Three consecutive primetime games

Four total primetime games for the Raiders, with three of them coming in consecutive weeks later in the season. Those games are against the Chiefs (Week 5), Rams (Wk 14), Patriots (Wk 15, and Steelers (Wk 16).

You can read more about Raiders primetime games here.

Raiders to face Cardinals in Week 2 home opener

Raiders to face Cardinals in Week 2 home opener

The schedule has begun trickling out. Each team dropped their home opener simultaneously at 3pm Pacific (6pm ET). For the Raiders, after heading to Los Angeles to face the rival Chargers, the Raiders return to Allegiant for their own home opener versus the Arizona Cardinals on September 18.

This is the Raiders first meeting with the Cardinals since 2018, their first home meeting against them and their first ever meeting in Las Vegas.

They own the all time record between the two teams at 6-4.

With the Raiders in Vegas, they have become the closest NFL team to Arizona, with the border to the state just a few miles away. This in some ways makes them regional rivals as fans from either team can easily fill the opposing stadium should they not sell out with their own fans.

Just ask the Chargers about that when the Raiders make the short trip to SoCal and black out their stadium.

The remainder of the schedule is set for release at 5pm Pacific (8pm ET) tonight.

Chargers vs. Raiders flexed to ‘Sunday Night Football’

When the Chargers play the Raiders next Sunday with a chance to play in the playoffs, they will do so in prime time.

When the Chargers play the Raiders next Sunday with a chance to play in the playoffs, they will do so in prime time.

The Week 18 matchup has been flexed from 1:25 pm PT to a 5:20 pm kickoff on “Sunday Night Football,” the NFL announced.

If Los Angeles wins, it will advance to the postseason since 2018. If Las Vegas wins, it will be its first trip to the playoffs since 2016.

Whichever team comes out on top will capture the No. 7 seed and likely face the presumed No. 2 seeded Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in a wild card matchup the following weekend.

The last time these two teams met earlier this season, the Chargers beat the Raiders, 28-14. The game was also a primetime matchup on “Monday Night Football.”
