Raiders sign grand nephew of legendary franchise player

Shedrick Jackson followed the footsteps of his great uncle Bo Jackson to Auburn and now he does the same by joining the Raiders.

Once a Raider, always a Raider really means something. So much so that it often extends to family of Raiders greats. Today, you can add another name to that list — Shedrick Jackson. Who the team added to the practice squad Wednesday.

Jackson is not just a former Auburn star receiver who played five games with the Bengals last season, he is the grand nephew of arguably the most legendary Raiders player of all time — Bo Jackson.

Jackson’s career in a Raiders uniform lasted just four seasons, but in that time he was one of the most famous and electric athletes in the world, spawning the Nike “Bo Knows” ad campaign for his two-sport prowess. And, of course, being absolutely unstoppable in Tecmo Bowl.

Shedrick followed Bo’s footsteps to Auburn, where he caught 66 passes for 864 yards and a touchdown. Now he follows in his footsteps to the Silver & Black.

He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent and appeared in five games as a rookie, mostly on special teams. He was brought back this season but was released in mid-September.

Welcome to the Silver & Black, Shedrick.

Raiders activate former 2nd round WR Week 11 vs Dolphins

For the first time since signing Terrace Marshall to the practice squad, he will be active Sunday vs the Dolphins.

For the first time since Terrace Marshall was signed to the Raiders practice squad three weeks ago, he’s getting called up to action.

The former round two pick by the Panthers in the 2021 draft played three seasons in Carolina, appearing in 36 games with 16 starts.

The 6-2, 200-pounder has 64 career catches for 767 yards and one touchdown. His best season was in 2022 when he caught 28 passes for 490 yards (17.5 yards per catch) and a touchdown.

But after a down year, he was released in the final roster cuts last August. He caught on with the 49ers on their practice squad but was released again last week and scooped up by the Raiders, who could certainly use some help at receiver.

With Davante Adams traded to New York, the Raiders have not been able to suitably fill his role in the offense. Jakobi Meyers has stepped up as the team’s top receiver, but in the five weeks since the trade, Tre Tucker has just nine catches for 85 yards.

Additionally, the Raiders activated C Will Putnam with Andre James OUT with an ankle injury and the offensive line depleted.

Raiders make 4 roster moves ahead of Week 5 vs Broncos

Among several roster moves for the Raiders, they signed former first round pick K’Lavon Chaisson to the active roster from the practice squad.

It didn’t take long for K’Lavon Chaisson to get the call up from the practice squad to the active roster. Two weeks ago the team signed the former first round pick to the practice squad due to the injury to Tyree Wilson. Then last week against the Browns, he was activated due in part to the ankle injury to Maxx Crosby that caused Crosby to miss the game. Now they’ve made it official.

With the team sending LB Luke Masterson to the injured reserve, the Raiders have signed Chaisson to the active roster just ahead of facing the rival Broncos in Denver.

Crosby is Questionable for the game, so Chaisson’s addition could be to once again add much needed depth at the position.

Chaissaon played 41 snaps (69%) last week in his debut with the Raiders, collecting four combined tackles in that time.

In addition, the Raiders elevated RB Sincer McCormick and WR Alex Bachman from the practice squad.

Raiders sign rookie tackle who Dane Brugler deemed mid-round draft worthy

Dane Brugler’s Scouting report put a mid-round draft grade on Gottlieb Ayedze. Now the Raiders get to see if he can live up to it.

This week the Raiders opened up a spot on the practice squad with the signing of CB Sam Webb. They have filled that spot with the addition of tackle Gottlieb Ayedze.

Ayedze was originally signed this offseason by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland. He landed on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) List heading into camp and never got a foothold before being waived at the final roster cutdown.

The 6-4, 308-pounder spent his first four college seasons as the full time starting left tackle at Frostburg State. He then transferred to Maryland as a fifth-year Senior and started nine games at right tackle for the Terrapins last season and was named Honorable Mention All BigTen.

In the leadup to the draft, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler put a mid-round grade on Ayedze. Here was his scouting report from his BEAST Draft Guide:

STRENGTHS: Offers functional size, strength and length for NFL trench play … doesn’t labor out of his stance and widens out mid-slide to help cut off cornering edge rushers … well-timed punch centers his target, but he can also recover and refit if his reach gets knocked away … has enough power in his upper half to turn and dump overeager blitzers, using their momentum against them … lateral quicks show on backside pulls and when working up on com bo blocks … shows adequate range when advancing on screens … keeps his head/eyes on a swivel to locate and react to extra pressures … a false start on t he Illinois tape was his only penalty in his lone FBS season…played primarily left tackle and right tackle over his career, but he also looked comfortable with his guard reps (19.3 percent of his 2023 offensive snaps came at right guard).

WEAKNESSES: More smooth than explosive as an athlete … needs to do a better job staying balanced in space to answer two -way rushers … improved sink at contact will help strengthen his anchor when responding to bull rushers … shows a little too much give when absorbing contact, allowing rushers to pry their way free … leans into his blocks in the run game but would like to see better leg drive and nastiness … core strength could use adjustments, s o he can better access power from different parts of his body … hand placement at the end of pulls tends to be inconsistent … only one season against top compe tition at the FBS level … missed the first two games of the 2023 season because of injury.

SUMMARY: A one-year starter at Maryland, Ayedze played predominantly right tackle in offensive coordinator Josh Gattis’ RPO-heavy, multiple-run scheme. Despite only playing football for six years (one year of high school, four in Division II and one season in the Big Ten), he played well with the Terps, and several NFL teams bumped his draft grade between the summer and end of the 2023 season. Although he can use improved hip roll in the run game t o create displacement, Ayedze is efficient out of his stance and on the move, staying patient in pass protection to mirror rushers in smaller spaces. He started only one game at guard in 2023, but it came against Illinois — and he more than held his own against potential first-rounder Jer’Zhan Newton. Overall, Ayedze doesn’t have overwhelming size and needs to prove himself against NFL power, but he plays with control and several baseline traits that will translate well. He projects as a developmental guard who can play tackle in a pinch.

GRADE: 5th-6th Round

Most likely the Raiders liked Ayedze coming out of the draft, but their board took them elsewhere. The Raiders had already added a guard and a tackle on day two and once the draft was over had hoped to get Ayedze as an undrafted free agent, but the Eagles got him instead.

Ayedze’s injury never really gave him a chance to prove he belonged. Now healthy again, the will have that chance with the Raiders.

Raiders sign CB Sam Webb to active roster off practice squad

Raiders sign CB Sam Webb to active roster off practice squad

After three weeks of practice squad elevations, the Raiders are making it official today. They are signing practice squad CB Sam Webb to the active roster according to a league source.

This is Webb’s third year with the Raiders. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western in 2022 and made the roster out of camp. He saw action in 17 games as a rookie, starting three.

Since then he’s spent most of his time on the practice squad, but, as with this season, gets activated on game days. He is considered valuable depth at cornerback and on special teams, so they keep him around.

They have needed him the first few weeks due to Brandon Facyson being on injured reserve and rookie DeCamerion Richardson being out with injury each week.

With Webb’s signing, the team will have to make a roster move. That could be a release of player sent to injured reserve. We will wait and see what that transaction will be.

Raiders activate CB Sam Webb from the practice squad to face Panthers

With depth still a concern at cornerback, Sam Webb gets called up from the practice squad for the third straight week.

Depth is still an issue for the Raiders. With Brandon Facyson on injured reserve and DeCamerion Richardson not expected to play again this week, the Raiders have once again elevated Sam Webb from the practice squad.

This makes all three games this season that Webb has been activated. In the first two games, he saw just one combined snap on defense and 19 snaps on special teams.

He is activated primarily in case there is an injury to one of the starters. And thus far, the trio of Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, and Jakorian Bennett have not missed any snaps.

The only other cornerback on the roster is Darnay Holmes, and he has seen even few snaps than Webb. He has not played a snap on defense with just 11 on special teams.

This is Webb’s third season with the Raiders. he originally signed with them as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western State. He appeared in all 17 games as a rookie in 2022, making three starts. He has appeared in just three games since then.

Raiders activate former 1st round pick days after signing him to practice squad

K’Lavon Chaisson gets the call up days after signing him to practice squad

You can’t have too many pass rushers. But you can have too few. And at present the Raiders are lacking in that department.

They lost Malcolm Koonce to a knee injury just before the season opener, prompting them to sign Charles Snowden off the practice squad to the active roster. Then six snaps into that game, they lost Tyree Wilson to a knee injury.

Koonce’s injury had him placed on injured reserve. The Wilson knee injury is a sprain, which will have him out an unknown amount of time. To prepare for his absence, and to replace Snowden’s spot on the practice squad, they added K’Lavon Chaisson to the practice squad.

The former first round pick is still just 25 and therefore still carries that hope that he will live up to his potential. And with Wilson officially OUT this week, the Raiders are apparently ready to give him a shot already.

C/haisson has been activated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Baltimore along with CB Sam Webb who had been elevated for the season opener as well.

With Chaisson in the mix, the Raiders will go into the game with four edge rushers on the roster along with Maxx Crosby, Janarius Robinson, and Snowden.

Webb offers needed depth as well, giving them five active cornerbacks along with Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, Jakorian Bennett, and Darnay Holmes.

Raiders add former Bills 5th round TE to practice squad

Raiders add former Bills 5th round TE to practice squad

Thursday the Raiders filled one of their vacant practice squad spots with some potential. They added former Buffalo Bills fifth round tight end Justin Shorter..

The 6-5, 228-pound former wide receiver caught 110 passes for 1552 yards and eight touchdowns in his college career. Including 70 catches for over 1100 yards and five touchdowns in his final two seasons for the Florida Gators.

His strong finish to his college career had him selected by the Bills with the 150th overall pick in the 2023 draft. But it was an injury that upended his potential.

Shorter spent his rookie season on injured reserve and didn’t get back into his coaches’ good graces this year and was cut with just two catches on four targets for 15 yards.

Now the Raiders are hoping a change of scenery can revive the potential that made him a mid-round selection.

Currently the Raiders have just three tight ends on the active roster along with TE John Samuel Shenker on the practice squad.

Updated Raiders practice squad signing tracker

Tracking the Raiders 16-man practice squad signings as they come in.

It’s been nearly 24 hours since the Raiders made their cuts to get down to 53 players. That means it’s time to put together a practice squad.

They didn’t have any of their cut players claimed off waivers by other teams, so they should pretty much get their pick of any of their own camp players on the practice squad that they like.

Here is the Raiders practice squad by position:

Offense

QB Carter Bradley
RB Sincere McCormick
WR Kristian Wilkerson
WR Jalen Guyton
WR Alex Bachman
TE John Samuel Shenker
TE Justin Shorter
T Dalton Wagner
G Ben Brown
C Will Putnam

Defense

DT Matthew Butler
DE Charles Snowden
DE David Agoha (IPP)
CB Sam Webb
CB MJ Devonshire
S Phalen Sanford

This is 16 players, with an IPP exemption for David Agoha, which means the Raiders have room to add two more to this roster. They cut DT Byron Young and CB MJ Devonshire on Wednesday, making them prime candidates to fill those spots. Young was claimed by the Eagles while Devonshire cleared waivers as was re-signed to the practice squad.

Raiders plan to enter season with 2 QBs on roster and adding one to practice squad

Raiders plan to enter season with 2 QBs on roster and adding one to practice squad

Tuesday was the cutdown deadline for NFL teams to bring their rosters from 90 players down to 53. On the Raiders roster, they kept just two quarterbacks, while cutting veteran Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Carter Bradley.

I asked Raiders GM Tom Telesco what his plan was for the position going into the season.

“Things could always change, but right now we’re looking at probably two on the active roster and one on the practice squad,” said Telesco.

That means, barring any major surprises among the cuts out there, the Raiders will stand pat with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell as their two active roster quarterbacks.

What they do with the practice squad spot is what we should find out by tomorrow. Obviously, the most likely would be bringing back either Bradley or Peterman, but should there be someone out there who they think could be an upgrade, there could be some consideration there.

The one issue with that would be the better quarterbacks out there are likely to be claimed off waivers, which means they would go on the active roster of whatever team claims them. So, if that’s not the Raiders’ plan, they would need to wait to see who clears waivers before adding them to the practice squad.
