Watch: Saints captains Demario Davis, Cameron Jordan create Buccaneers turnovers

Watch: Saints captains Demario Davis, Cameron Jordan create Buccaneers turnovers in prime time

Nobody (or at least 92% of everybody) gave the New Orleans Saints a chance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, but if they’re going to steal a win it’ll be because of opportunistic plays by their defense.

And nothing encapsulates that better than Demario Davis intercepting Tom Brady late in the second quarter on an errant pass from Tom Brady. Well, actually, another play early in the third quarter might illustrate that better — Cameron Jordan hustled to punch the ball out of Rachaad White’s arms, leading to a a fumble recovery by Carl Granderson.

These are game-changing opportunities that are hard to come by. The Saints went into this game with just two interceptions on the season so far. Brady had only thrown two interceptions all year in his own right. They’ve struggled to replace the production lost by moving on from ballhawks like Marcus Williams and C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the offseason, but plays like this are big. They’ll need more of them to turn this season around.

Rachaad White could be the key in a Buccaneers win over the Saints on Monday night

Tampa has the worst rushing offense in the NFL.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t need a win in Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Even with a loss, they’d remain in first place in the NFC South and would very likely be favored to finish the year there.

But they could really use a win after dropping last week’s game to the Cleveland Browns to fall back to under .500.

It was a bad loss that saw the offense regress against a bad defense after seemingly taking strides in the previous weeks.

That’s what makes Monday night’s game so unpredictable. The Bucs are favored by three points, but the Saints typically give Tom Brady and the Tampa offense trouble — including Week 2 when the game was tied 3-3 entering the fourth quarter (Tampa won 20-10).

The best way to beat New Orleans is with a strong run game, which the Bucs absolutely don’t have. Or at least they didn’t until Rachaad White saw an increased workload over the last two weeks.

In that time, White has averaged 4.7 yards per carry on his way to 160 yards in place of the injured Leonard Fournette, who was averaging just 3.4 yards this season.

Tampa has desperately needed to lighten the burden on Brady, who is second in the NFL in pass attempts. And that’s especially the case against the Saints, who rank eighth against the pass but just 22nd against the run. White seems ready to help with that.

Though Fournette seems likely to return Monday after practicing all week, White should remain a part of the offense and give the Bucs another weapon to attack New Orleans. That could help open up the passing game against a secondary that could potentially be getting Marshon Lattimore back from injury. He’s officially listed as questionable to play.

Like Tampa, the Saints aren’t without motivation. Though they occupy last place in the South at 4-8, they can pull within a half game of the Bucs with a win. But their offense has also struggled, averaging less than 13 points in its last four games, including a 13-0 shut out against the Niners last week.

I have less optimism in their ability to turn things around, particularly against a top-five scoring defense like Tampa’s. That’s why I’m rolling with Brady and the Bucs to cover this spread, even if they don’t completely find a groove on offense.

Prince’s Pick: Bucs win 23-13

Anytime TD scorer: Chris Godwin (+700)

Fantasy football waiver wire: Week 13 free-agent forecast

Here’s a look at the top waiver-wire targets for fantasy football in Week 13.

As most trade deadlines have passed, the fantasy football playoff picture is beginning to come into sharper focus for the majority of leagues. That’s why keeping up with the waiver wire is a vital process at this point in the season.

After a week of no byes, there will be two teams getting some rest in Week 13. That would be the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers.

We’ll be taking a look at the top available players rostered in ESPN leagues, using the 75% rostered mark as the threshold. If you have any questions about prioritizing a certain player over another, don’t be afraid to hit me up on Twitter (@KevinHickey11). Your questions, comments, and roasts are always welcome!

We also will be taking a look at some deeper players to stash and the top streaming options for the upcoming week.

Fantasy football waiver wire recommendations refer to 12-team league formats, unless specifically stated.

Check back for any updates throughout Monday and Tuesday as more injury news becomes available.

Fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em: Week 12

Check out the starts and sits in fantasy football for Week 12.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, which means we were able to stuff our faces with food and show gratitude as we tilt our faces off with three games to begin the week. There’s no other way fantasy football managers would want it in Week 12.

Though no teams are on a bye, this week is a bit unique with the three games being played Thursday. Now, fantasy managers have the tough decisions to make with the remaining games left in Week 12.

Doing start/sit articles can be a little challenging. The players featured on the list below should not be taken as “must starts” or “must sits.” Instead, these are more suggestions on what we believe managers should do with fringe players heading into the weekend. The choice is ultimately up to the manager.

Just because a player is listed as a “start” doesn’t mean he should be put in the lineup over the secure, bona fide studs. Vice versa for the “sits.” If there’s no better option on the waiver wire or the bench, a manager shouldn’t automatically sit the player. That’s why these can be tricky waters to navigate.

Six points with David Dorey

Friday’s quick look at six fantasy items to know

We got past Thanksgiving with no upsets but closer than expected games.  The Lions are better than in recent seasons – no argument. And the Bills are no longer paving over every opponent. The Vikings got back on the Winning Wagon but not before the Patriots made them work for it. The Cowboys pulled away in the second half over the Giants, but it was close for a while.

Now we move into Week 12 weekend with fantasy playoffs looming and every game, and every fantasy point could be the difference in reaching the league playoffs or looking for something to worry about in December.

Six items for this weekend:

1.) Playoff Defenses – Unless you are in an 8-team league with rosters of just ten players, your waiver has to be little more than players that are either on injured reserve, the “not happenings”, or the hot starters that are back under a rock. But – defenses are still likely there since most fantasy teams will stick with one for the season. Do not do that for the playoffs, you always need options. Yes, entire defenses do not get injured, but enough of  their key players can make a difference, or their offense falls apart and the defense plays in less advantageous situations. Or maybe, you may have a really bad matchup in Weeks 15 to 17 worth covering.

This table shows the average of the strength of schedule (SOS) tool output for projected fantasy points using what opponents allow on average to opposing defenses for Weeks 15 to 17 and three-week sum of what defenses have been scoring. In essence, how good they are and how good their schedule is combined.

Check individual weekly matchups if you want to mix and match defenses, but the above shows which defenses are best situated to perform well in the playoff weeks.

2.)  Playoff kickers – Same deal as the defenses above, these are the kickers with the most favorable output combining their weekly average and what the strength of schedule (SOS) took says about what Weeks 15 to 17 average out to be for their unique schedule.

You should always carry two kickers into the playoffs, even if you never use the second kicker. The above kickers have the best outlook.

3.)  QB Mike White (NYJ) – The Jets opened the season with Joe Flacco for three weeks, and he never passed for fewer than 285 yards, totaled five touchdowns, used Elijah Moore for a dozen catches and let Garrett Wilson start his career with a bang. But when they finally decided that they had enough of Zach Wilson and the Yips, they opted to start former 2018 fifth-round pick Mike White instead of Flacco.

White has four career starts – all last year. He famously threw for 405 yards and three scores in an upset of the Bengals. His final start had him pass for 251 yards and four interceptions. Garrett Wilson impressed regardless of the quarterback, but he was far more consistently productive with Flacco than Wilson. And Elijah Moore started the year with some fantasy value that disappeared once Wilson took over this year. White isn’t guaranteed anything more than a chance to start this week. He realizes just how important this opportunity is.

4.) QB Kyle Allen (HOU) – The Texans have switched from the once-promising Davis Mills to Kyle Allen who will debut on Sunday at the Dolphins. Allen has appeared in 21 games and the bulk of his career work was in 2019, when he started 12 games for the Panthers and threw 17 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. That was the breakout year for Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore,  who broke 100 yards in four games and finished with 87 catches for 1,175 yards. He was much better with D.J. Moore than Mills has been with Brandin Cooks.

He’ll face the Dolphins, so chances are high that the Texans will fall behind and need to pass. And there could be plenty of trash time at the end of the game. Both Cooks and Nico Collins disappointed after much better production last season. Allen gets a chance to renew his career.

5.) QB Matt Stafford (LAR) –  He won a Super Bowl last year. Nine months later, Stafford is on his second concussion in three weeks and there is speculation that he may retire early. He’s 35 years old and may be at that point where future health outweighs everything. The Rams have lost Cooper Kupp, which guts the receivers. Bryce Perkins was expected to start this week against the Chiefs but Wolford  was estimated to have a full practice on Thursday and may be over his neck injury.

Wolford started in Week 10 covering for Stafford after his first concussion and his only notable connection was with Tyler Higbee (8-73). Regardless of  which quarterback starts, the Rams will need to throw the ball more  and more as the game progresses. There is still some fantasy value left behind after Cooper Kupp left. And with Stafford looking very questionable for the rest of the season, Wolford is the only most likely to direct the Rams offense. The rest of their season starts this week.

6.)  RB Rachaad White (TB) – The fantasy world (or, more appropriately, the Rachaad White fantasy owners) wants to see White get a chance to take away at least most of the work  from Leonard Fournette as he’s been more productive lately. Fournette injured his hip during the game in Munich, Germany after running for 57 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries by the middle of the third quarter. White went on to gain 105 yards on 22 carries but never had a target.

HC Todd Bowles said this week that the team would ride the hot hand between Fournette and White. If Fournette remains bothered by his hip, this could look great for White playing at the No. 31 defense versus running backs (Cleveland). It is worth tracking this week, and White could buy more use in later games with this soft matchup. But the Buccaneers have a lot of money invested in Fournette who has an inescapable cap hit of $8.5 million next year. “Riding the hot hand” this week alone likely won’t create any lasting effects if White excels, regardless of what Twitter fires it may start.

Fantasy football sleepers to play in Week 12

Check out these sleepers to play in fantasy football for Week 12.

The big week of games is here as fantasy football managers get a bye week from the bye weeks. That doesn’t really make sense, but you know what I’m trying to say.

While we have no teams on a bye in Week 12, it is Thanksgiving Week. That means six teams will play on Thursday night, so we’ll be working to get these sleepers out a day earlier for your lineups.

The Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings all play Thursday.

We will be using The Huddle’s weekly PPR projections and rankings as a reference to find some potential boom games this week.

Fantasy Football: 12 best waiver wire targets for NFL Week 12

Consider adding these players to your fantasy football team off the waiver wire this week.

With the fantasy football playoffs quickly approaching, it’s do-or-die time for managers currently on the bubble.

To help you make a late-season push, we’ve put together a list of the top-12 fantasy football waiver wire targets for Week 12, including options at quarterback, tight end, wide receiver and running back.

In Washington, the Commanders have said they plan to stick with QB Taylor Heinicke, who is 4-1 as a starter this season. Heinicke’s fantasy numbers haven’t stood out, but he has a good matchup against the Falcons this week.

Meanwhile, in New Orleans, TE Juwan Johnson scored again on Sunday, marking his fifth touchdown in his last five games. Ride the hot hand!

Over in Cincinnati, RB Joe Mixon suffered a head injury on Sunday, putting his status for Week 12 in doubt. That makes fellow RB Samaje Perine a top target on the waiver wire this week.

Here’s the full list of the best players to target on the fantasy football waiver wire this week.

Bucs RB Rachaad White building confidence, maximizing opportunities

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Rachaad White keeps building confidence as his role in the offense continues to grow

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent their third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft on Arizona State running back Rachaad White, the expectation was that he would give the Bucs a change-of-pace runner to help spell Leonard Fournette, particularly in the passing game.

As the Bucs come out of their bye week, the rookie might be in the process of taking the starting job altogether.

White helped lead the way for Tampa Bay’s 21-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Germany, carrying the ball 22 times for 104 yards. He provided the highlight of the day with an epic stiff-arm, and put the game away with two huge runs on the final drive.

As the season has progressed, White has clearly become more comfortable in the offense, and his confidence is through the roof after that impressive outing in Munich.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

“I’ll say I’m very comfortable,” White said Monday. “Obviously, my confidence is at an all-time high, but it just comes along with it. It’s more about doing your job [and] the coaches put me in a great position, teach me the game, Tom [Brady], a lot of guy – leaders on the team – teach me the game, so I just keep learning as I go. But, the things I can control is my attitude and effort. And when I play, that’s what I control.”

White is doing everything he can to maximize the opportunities he’s getting now as his role in the offense continues to grow.

“I’m just a big guy on opportunities, so that’s kind of what I focus on,” White said. “When opportunities come, I just have to make the best of them – that’s up to me to make them. I got a lot of great guys in my corner, my family and my friends and things like that and we all understand that life is about opportunities. Eventually everyone is going to get their shot and when you get your shot, it’s about what you make of it.”

White’s next opportunity will come on the road against the Browns on Sunday, as the Bucs might need to lean on the ground game once again, thanks to cold and rainy conditions that are currently forecast for Cleveland.
