Former Rutgers football recruit, New Jersey four-star R.J. Moten is in the transfer portal

R.J. Moten has entered the transfer portal.

R.J. Moten, who played some significant snaps as a starter for Michigan last season, has entered the transfer portal.

A former four-star recruit, Moten was a member of the 2020 recruiting class and a four-star recruit according to 247Sports. He played his high school football for Delran (Delran, N.J.) and was ranked as the fifth-best recruit in New Jersey as well as the No. 180 recruit in the nation.

He enters the transfer portal coming off last season as a sophomore, where he had 31 total tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass defended as a safety for Michigan.

The Wolverines won the Big Ten Championship Game and went on to compete in the College Football Playoff.

While Rutgers does not have a pressing need at safety, a talent like Moten is rare. Rutgers offered Moten out of high school at Delran.

Currently on the Rutgers roster is Aaron Lewis, who transferred to Rutgers in 2020 from Michigan. Lewis has thrived in the Scarlet Knights offense, finishing last season with 54 total tackles last year and 1.5 sacks.

Delran has a nice Rutgers connection in the current recruiting class. Three-star offensive lineman Kenny Jones committed to Rutgers football in November, becoming the first verbal in this recruiting class.

Michigan loses multiple players to transfer portal on Monday

What is going on in Ann Arbor? #GoBucks

The rivalry between [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and Michigan is alive and well. While we all keep an eye on what is happening in Buckeye Nation, there is a wandering eye on what is happening in Ann Arbor.

Today hasn’t been the best day for our rivals on the transfer portal front. Just this early afternoon, two contributors, one each on offense and defense, have entered the portal and will leave.

Both of them figure to leave the Wolverines with holes to fill at their respective positions. Find out below which two Michigan players have entered the portal and will move on along with the impact of their decisions.

Michigan has four prospects on PFF’s top 100 draft board for 2023

We expect more Wolverines to be on this list at the season’s end.

It’s not surprising that a team that made the College Football Playoff and won 12 games in 2021 would have some players being talked about early for the 2023 NFL draft. While Michigan has some players being discussed for next April’s draft, the Wolverines don’t have anyone being projected to be a top pick in the 2023 draft.

The Wolverines do return just about everyone from the offensive side of the ball and this is a big reason why Michigan is a preseason top 10 team for 2022. But the maize and blue did lose a chunk of their top 10 scoring defense from last season. Aidan Hutchinson and Daxton Hill were both first-round selections, and the Wolverines also lost David Ojabo, Josh Ross, and Brad Hawkins who were all major contributors.

Pro Football Focus came out with a preseason top 100 draft board for the 2023 NFL draft and four Wolverines cracked the list from PFF.

We can tell you that shockingly, none of Olu Oluwatimi, Erick All, or Ryan Hayes cracked the top 100.

Early playing time likely, Don Brown shares potential instant impact Michigan freshmen

With the likelihood that Michigan will have several play early, the Wolverines defensive coordinator breaks down the likely contributors.

[jwplayer Kh6kklUV-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — One of the big questions every year before the season begins is who of the first-year players will of the instant impact variety? Given the oddness of 2020 — the postponed start, a nine-game Big Ten schedule, and COVID-19 still being out there — we might be seeing some younger players on the field sooner-than-not.

On the defensive side of the ball, Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown says that he anticipates playing some younger players earlier, because you never know who will be needed should a player or handful of players test positive, thus meaning a 21-day period where those affected must sit out.

“Yes, I think we will (play younger players earlier),” Brown said. “Obviously, keeping your fingers crossed with this COVID issue as well, you just don’t know what’s gonna happen on a week-to-week basis in terms of your roster. So you’ve gotta be prepared. The one thing that Coach Harbaugh has stressed to all of us coaches is, ‘Coach everybody! Make sure everybody gets coached!’ And that has all got taken to heart. And we are coaching the first-day freshman and the senior that’s never got on the field, because you just don’t know who’s gonna end up playing for you on Saturday afternoon. So that’s been an important battle cry.

“If you ask me what’s been the biggest difference having this extended period: we’ve been able to teach the defense to every human being that’s in the unit. If you don’t know the defense, it’s your fault, because they’ve all had opportunity to practice, they’ve all had opportunity to run with upper-level units, and we’re making sure everybody gets coached.”

During his 40-plus minute media availability, Brown named several true freshmen who have stood out to him thus far. He mentioned William Mohan at VIPER, Jaylen Harrell at SAM linebacker, Nikhai Hill-Green at WILL linebacker and Eamonn Dennis at cornerback as potential contributors at one point or another.

But he also singled out an in-state early-enrollee who is all-but-ensured to see the field this season in some capacity.

“I’ll give you a name that I’m kind of excited about,” Brown said. “This Makari Paige is playing at a high level. And he’s a young man that we feel he can jump in there and help us at early stages, for sure. And you can never predict that until you’re out there on the practice field and guys are kinda going through the paces. He’s a safety all the way, tremendous length. I’m gonna be conservative and say he’s 6-foot-2 – I think he’s taller than that. He really plays well over the slot. But we have a number of guys playing pretty well over the slots, and the good thing is we have good, young receivers, so we’re getting challenged every day. It’s nice to be able to get a good look at our guys in terms of competitive situations.”

Beyond that, who else has been impressing Brown since arriving on campus?

He went deeper into some of the names that were already discussed as well as a few others who very well could see early playing time in 2020.

“It’s so hard when you start saying ‘this freshman’ and ‘that freshman’ and then you forget a guy,” Brown said. “I think the guys that have really stood out, starting with the linebacker position: Kalel Mullings – he’s 6-foot-2.5, he’s 241-pounds and he’s 17-years old playing the MIKE linebacker position. He can run now. Nikhai Hill-Green plays the WILL next door to him. They were both just in my office. They love football, they love being around it. I just see the sky’s the limit for those guys. Cornell Wheeler from West Bloom is another guy. Has lost some time but is back now. And obviously, we need to see more out of Cornell, but I think he’s got real ability as well. R.J. Moten at safety is gonna be a real good player. I’m not sure he’s in the right position exactly yet – we’re trying to figure that out. There’s really a lot of good players. Seldon is a good player – we’re playing him at nickel, but he missed a little bit of time as well.

“Those guys are good players, you know? Kris Jenkins is a defensive lineman from Good Counsel. His dad played in the NFL for a very long time. He’s got tremendous upside as well. We’re happy with him. I’m whipping around in my head here – I know I’m gonna miss some significant guys on you.

“But we’re very happy with that freshman class overall. High character. Really good football players and guys that can really help us.”

Jim Harbaugh likens 2020 DB haul to Daxton Hill with early playing ability

Why the defensive backs seem like players the Wolverines head coach could see hitting the field early.

[jwplayer 8xPQIEAt-XNcErKyb]

Jim Harbaugh doesn’t often like to compare players to each other as he says it diminishes one or the other. But what if he finds a comparison that’s all upside?

Such seems to be the case when it comes to the incoming defensive backs, as Harbaugh sees a group of signees that could come in and be early impact players for Michigan.

At least that’s what he told Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches podcast on Thursday.

“It’s a really, really good, really good athletic group,” Harbaugh said. “You saw Dax Hill come in and make a big impact as a freshman. There’s gonna be all four really with the license and ability to make the same kind of impact in our secondary. Very excited about that.”

Getting more specific — though he didn’t speak about safety Makari Paige from West Bloomfield (MI) — Harbaugh broke down what he likes about some of the incoming players, starting with Michigan’s first commit in the 2020 class.

Andre Seldon

Michigan signee Andre Seldon

“Andre is a tough competitor,” Harbaugh said. “Watched him over at camps, watched him over at Belleville. Watched him run track and lead his team. Those are the kinds of guys you want playing in your secondary.”

Jordan morant and R.J. Moten

Michigan signee Jordan Morant

“Jordan Morant – he’s a Dax Hill-type of safety. He’s got that kind of special ability,” Harbaugh noted, before moving on to Moten. “R.J. Moten’s another one. Big, strong athlete that – he’s even got the ability to be a corner. But he’s also got the strength and physicality to be a safety and cover people. It’s a really dynamic group.”

Eamonn dennis

The next player he touched on is one we project to wide receiver, but Harbaugh also says could play on the defensive side of the ball.

“Eamonn Dennis has the ability to be both a defensive player or an offensive player,” Harbaugh said. “Could be a corner or could be a receiver. Kind of like a Mike Sainristil – another really good Mike Sainristil.”

“Pretty simple – Eamonn Dennis is a really good receiver and he’s a really good defensive back. If you think Mike Sainristil, if you watched Eamonn’s tape, you’re gonna think of Mike Sainristil. That’s who I thought of when I first watched Eamonn Dennis play football. He could be a corner, he could be a slot receiver. He could be a return person.”

William Mohan

The final player he mentioned isn’t a defensive back, per se, in that he’s projected to VIPER, which is technically a linebacker position.

But Harbaugh raved about how versatile Brooklyn (NY) Erasmus Hall’s William Mohan is, and why he could be a guy you see all over the field once his time comes.

“The other person to mention is William Mohan, who is the type of athlete where he could be a corner, he could be a safety, he could be an outside linebacker,” Harbaugh said. “Sounds a lot like a VIPER, I know as I say it. He’s another youngster who is so versatile, so good and athletic. Really another youngster on this group that was recruited by everybody. He’s really gonna be fun to watch. The way he runs and hits, it’s special. It really pops off the screen.”

“Wiliam is a long, really athletic player that could cover,” Harbaugh later continued. “His ability to blitz off the edge is special. Track down ball carriers. He loves to hit. Take a look at some of his highlights of special teams or defense. He’s a very, very physical. Can get ‘em down and can also make a lot of big hits. We’ll see exactly what position when it says athlete, but that’s just really saying this guy has the ability to play corner, safety, VIPER, and that’s a good thing.”
