Dolphins work out five, sign one to the practice squad on Monday

Miami had lost defensive line depth when Ben Stille signed with the Browns.

The Miami Dolphins had some room on their practice squad after defensive lineman Ben Stille was signed by the Cleveland Browns last week.

On Monday, Miami hosted five free agents for workouts – defensive lineman R.J. McIntosh, defensive end Ronald Blair, defensive tackle Viane Moala, offensive tackle Rashod Hill and offensive tackle Kendall Lamm.

McIntosh, a 26-year-old former Miami Hurricane, was the only player signed from the group. He was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft by the New York Giants, spending three seasons there before spending parts of the last years with the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts. In 18 career appearances, McIntosh has recorded 18 tackles and two sacks.

Blair, 29, was a fifth-round selection of the San Francisco 49ers back in 2016. He spent five years with the 49ers, totaling 116 tackles and 14.5 sacks.

Moala went undrafted this year after a collegiate career split between Hawaii and Utah.

Hill, 30, has been in the NFL since 2016 when he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the Minnesota Vikings. He appeared in 74 games (starting 22) over six seasons for the Vikings.

Lamm, 30, went undrafted in 2015 out of Appalachian State. He’s played in 86 games (starting 28) for the Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans.

While McIntosh was the only one signed, that doesn’t mean Miami can’t call these guys back if another hole opens up.

Report: Colts release DT R.J. McIntosh

The Colts are releasing DT R.J. McIntosh.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to release defensive tackle R.J. McIntosh ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

McIntosh joined the Colts early this offseason and was battling for one of the final roster spots in the defensive tackle room. He had some flashes throughout training camp, but it’s no surprise the Colts may favor their young draft picks in Curtis Brooks and Eric Johnson II.

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Defensive Tackle

DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart lead the DTs into Colts training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are just over a week away from the start of training camp at Westfield where the interior defensive line will boast some strong competition.

The starting spots will remain the same in Gus Bradley’s new defense. It’s the depth roles that will be the ones to watch when the team officially returns from summer break.

Not many additions were made to the interior defensive line outside of two intriguing Day 3 picks in the 2022 NFL draft, and this unit will have a lot of say in the type of production the entire defense has in 2022.

Be sure to check out the other position previews ahead of training camp:

As training camp is set to begin July 27, here’s a preview of the defensive tackles for the Colts:

Bleacher Report gives Giants C- in 2018 NFL draft re-grade

In a 2018 NFL draft re-grade, Bleacher Report gives the New York Giants a letter grade of C- and that’s being very generous.

Many pundits believe the New York Giants’ losing ways have been proliferated by poor drafting and point to the 2018 NFL draft as the linchpin of that argument.

The Giants held the second overall selection in the draft that year, which was being touted as having one of the best quarterback classes in years. The Giants kew that Eli Manning only had a year or two of productivity left and were in position to take Manning’s successor.

They did not.

The Cleveland Browns selected Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield — the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner — with the first pick. The Giants then grabbed Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second pick, passing on several quarterbacks, including USC’s Sam Darnold, Josh Allen of Wyoming, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Lamar Jackson of Louisville.

We now know how all of that worked out. Allen and Jackson are superstars while the others have bounced around the league. Barkley’s career has hit the skids due to injuries after a breakout rookie season.

Bleacher Report recently revised that draft and assigned Giants and then general manager Dave Gettleman a C- grade. Barkley is the only player from that draft class that is still the Giants.

“The idea of taking the best available player sounds good until it leads to taking a running back No. 2 overall when the team needs a quarterback,” writes BR’s Ian Wharton. “Imagine where the New York Giants could be today had they drafted and developed either Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson rather than Saquon Barkley.”

Water under the bridge. The Giants took a quarterback the next season in the first round, Duke’s Daniel Jones, who the jury is still out on. Had the Giants hit on Jones, few would be so critical of their 2018 draft performance.

The other players taken in 2018 are: UTEP OG Will Hernandez (No. 34 overall), Georgia LB Lorenzo Carter (No. 66 overall), NC State DT B.J. Hill (No. 69 overall), Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta (No. 108 overall), Miami DT R.J. McIntosh (No. 139 overall).

All five of these players are still in the league with other teams after up-and-down careers with the Giants. Wharton pretty much acknowledged that in his closing statement.

“We aren’t going to punish the Giants for their decision to draft Barkley at No. 2 since he was a star for two years. The rest of this draft class was a mediocre group who underachieved after a coaching change, though,” he wrote.

Colts sign R.J. McIntosh, Jake Verity to futures contracts

Colts signed DT R.J. McIntosh and K Jake Verity to futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive tackle R.J. McIntosh and kicker Jake Verity to reserve/futures contracts, the team announced Tuesday.

McIntosh was a fifth-round pick with the New York Giants in the 2018 NFL draft. He spent three seasons with the Giants (2018-2021) before spending time with the New Orleans Saints (2021) and Green Bay Packers (2021).

He has 2.0 sacks and two tackles for loss in 18 career games but hasn’t appeared in a game since 2019.

Verity signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL draft. He spent most of the 2021 season on the Ravens practice squad while working with Justin Tucker.

Packers hosting visits for veteran free agents Taco Charlton, R.J. McIntosh

The Packers held a visit for veteran free agents Taco Charlton and R.J. McIntosh.

The Green Bay Packers might be on the verge of adding some veteran help for the front of Joe Barry’s defense.

The team held official visits for free agents Taco Charlton and R.J. McIntosh on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Charlton was a first-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2017. He has produced 11 sacks, 20 quarterback hits and 12 tackles for losses while playing in 44 games for three teams (Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins) over the last four years.

McIntosh was a fifth-round pick of the New York Giants in 2018. He played in 18 games over his first two NFL seasons but hasn’t been in a regular-season game since 2019.

The Packers could be looking to upgrade the depth at edge rusher and the defensive line after a disappointing Week 1 effort. And edge rusher might be a priority after losing Za’Darius Smith (back) to injured reserve.

If the visits went well, a signing could be possible as soon as Tuesday. The Packers play the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field on Monday night.

The Packers also held tryouts for linebackers Peter Kalambayi, Shareef Miller and Tuzar Skipper. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported this weekend that the Packers were looking for linebacker help via trade.

Saints claim R.J. McIntosh off waivers from Giants

The New Orleans Saints have claimed DL R.J. McIntosh off of waivers from the New York Giants.

The New York Giants waived defensive lineman R.J. McIntosh earlier this week in a flurry of moves that turned over the bottom portion of their depth.

But it didn’t take McIntosh long to find a new home.

The New Orleans Saints swooped in and claimed McIntosh off of waivers from the Giants, adding him to their roster just days prior to the first round of cuts.

McIntosh was a fifth-round pick of the Giants out of Miami in the 2018 NFL draft. He started his NFL career on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition during the NFL combine.

In early November of 2018, McIntosh was activated from NFI and placed on the Giants’ active roster.

McIntosh has appeared in 18 career games, recording 18 tackles, three QB hits and two sacks. However, he has not played in a game since 2019 having been a healthy scratch for all 16 games a season ago.

Saints claim ex-Giants DL R.J. McIntosh, send WR Jalen McCleskey to injured reserve

Saints claim ex-Giants DL R.J. McIntosh off of waivers, send WR Jalen McCleskey to injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints filed a couple of roster moves on Thursday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, bringing in former New York Giants fifth round pick R.J. McIntosh off of waivers while designated wide receiver Jalen McCleskey to the injured reserve list.

ESPN’s Field Yates first reported that the Saints claimed McIntosh from the waiver wire. The Miami product has an interesting athletic profile at 6-foot-4 and 293 pounds, but with limited movement skills. His NFL career began on the non-football injury list due to a thyroid condition, and he was a healthy scratch last year for Big Blue. He’s bagged 18 tackles (plus two sacks and a couple of pressures) in exactly 18 games played.

As for McCleskey: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that the speedster is likely to receive an injury settlement after injuring his hamstring. The issue isn’t believed to be a long-term problem but it should still sideline him to start the season. Once he signs that settlement buyout, he’ll have an opportunity to try out for other teams or hope to land on New Orleans’ practice squad.

Losing McCleskey before the first preseason game is a major disappointment. He moved well in training camp practice and was the only receiver who could match Deonte Harris stride for stride deep downfield. Without him, look for players like Easop Winston Jr. to step into that role. Hopefully the Tulane grad can return sometime in the near future.

Giants sign DT Elijah Qualls, waive DT R.J. McIntosh

The New York Giants have signed veteran DT Elijah Qualls and waived DT R.J. McIntosh, a 2018 fifth-round pick.

The New York Giants announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed veteran defensive tackle Elijah Qualls.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 NFL draft, Qualls has also spent time with the Carolina Panthers (2018-2019), Baltimore Ravens (2019), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019) and DC Defenders of the XFL.

In six career games, Qualls has recorded four tackles and one QB hit.

The Giants also announced that they have waived defensive lineman R.J. McIntosh.

Finally, the Giants have waived wide receiver Derrick Dillon.

Giants roster outlook: Upgrades, downgrades or lateral moves on defense

Giants Wire examines the New York Giants defense and the changes made this offseason, offering a verdict on each unit.

The New York Giants went into the offseason knowing they had to make some changes on their 25th ranked defense.

General manager Dave Gettleman used his free agent money and seven of his 10 draft picks in an attempt to revamp and revive a group that simply allowed way too many easy scores to opponents in 2019.

Here is a quick rundown on each unit as training camp begins

Defensive line

Gained: Austin Johnson

Lost: Olsen Pierre

The Giants’ big move was made last October when they traded two draft choices to the Jets for Leonard Williams, an impending free agent. They could not come to an agreement this offseason, so they applied the franchise tag to retain Williams at a price of $16.1 million. He’ll be a starter along with Dalvin Tomlinson and Dexter Lawrence. B.J. Hill, R.J McIntosh and Chris Slayton are returning as well. Johnson will provide some veteran depth.

Verdict: Slight upgrade
